Summary of Text A, Unit 1During a visit to China for studying arts education, the writer got in the difference between Chinese and American ideas of education through an interesting phenomenon. When the writer’s son Benjamin was trying to place the key into the narrow slot, the writer was happy to see his exploratory behavior, while the nearby Chinese staff would come to his rescue, so called “ba zhe shou jiao”. The key-slot anecdote caused the writer to discuss with Chinese educators. According to the writer, American ideas attach more attention to innovation and self-reliance, emphasize the ability of solving problems on his own, and encourage children to boldly try new and challenging things. To some extent, they don’t care the initial success, instead, they care the fostering of children’s creativity. For Chinese, adults want to mold and shape children’s performance to master as many basic skills with extreme facility as possible. Summary of Text A of Unit 1There are some stumbling blocks in intercultural communication.The first block is the assumption of similarity. that is : people naively assume that people around the world have similar ways to exchange information and express themselves. However, people from different culture are not all alike.The second one is language difference. A word may has numerous meanings in different context, the learners’ tenacity with “one word, one meaning” is worse than trying to understand the meaning of the new word.The third one is nonverbal misunderstanding. people from different cultures have different perception on life, and they usually fit or interpret other cultures through their own culture. It is even harder to understand the unspoken codes than observed signs and symbols.The fifth one is the presence of preconceptions and stereotypes .Preconception leads to misunderstandings and stereotypes are not easy to change even when the reality is against the imagination because it is deeply rooted in one’s culture.The sixth one is the high anxiety.It is common in intercultural communication that people are anxious about uncertainties.
