On a bright, warm July after noon, Mac Holla n, a primary school teacher, was

cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to

make a bicycle repair, but they had en couraged Mac to carry on, and they would

catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled( 骑行)along alone, he thought fon dly of

his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful

place someday.

Then Mac heard q uick and loud breathing behind him. Man, that 'a big dog! ”

he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it was not a dog at

all, but a wolf, quickly catchi ng up with him.

Mac s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the

bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud env eloped the ani mal, and to

Mac s relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side aga

in. Then it attacked the back of Mac s bike, teari ng ope n his tent bag. He fired at

the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase.

Mac was pedali ng hard now. He waved and yelled at pass ing cars but was

careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he d be easy caught up and the wolf 'teeth would be tearing into

his flesh.

At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska.

They did not think much of it when they saw two cyclist repairing their bike on the

side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running

alon gside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a

wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle beh ind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was

catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Seeing the car stop, Mac jumped off

his bicycle immediately and rushed to the door of the car. So frighte ned was he that

he hardly said a whole senten ce, but stammered, “ the

wolf ....... , please let me in. ” Seeing the wolf running towards the car, Paul

opened the door without any hesitation, pulling Mac into the car. Three men in the car

were staring out of the window and saw the wolf standing there, thinking how to fight

back the wolf.

A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. About a hundred meters

away, the two men stopped and realized what had happe ned to their frie nd. Bei ng

aware of the wolf s cruelty and not to startle the wolf, they were determined to stay

where they were and attempted to think out an idea. Sudde nly, one of the cyclists

touched the food bad which they brought. A good idea occurred to him that they could

lead the wolf to the forest by throwing their beef and pock away. Smelling the flavor of

the meat, the wolf turned around and ran alon gside the meat. The two cyclists u-tur

ned in a crossroads. What comforted the two cyclists was that Mac did not get injured.

“Thankyou for stopp ing to save me, said Mac to Paul a nd Becky. Mac and his two frie nds decided to go back home in case they would run into the wolf aga in.
