1. Introduction

In the afternoon, I watched the film Forrest Gump. It is an American movie inspired by a

novel of the same name. The author of this novel is Winston Gram. The film is awarded Oscar. I

can't help retelling the whole story. This is a powerful yet charming movie; fun for its special

effects and profound in how it keeps you thinking long after it are over. Like others, I've seen this

movie more than once. One comment I've never heard is that Forrest's simplicity is almost

Zen-like. I should read the novel to get the author's intention. But rather than an implication that

you should do what you're supposed to do and believe in God and you'll win in the end, I see it as

Zen-like, i.e., living in the moment and not having expectations or particular cravings .So he ends

up just stumbling into all the major historical events of the time. Granted, he achieves this only

because he doesn't have the brains to think otherwise and actually have expectations, but so many

of our problems are because we do have higher intellect and desires, which ironically makes us

unhappy because we know what we are missing. [1] We love our cats and dogs for the same

simplicity and always being in the moment. There's a line in the movie wondering if everything is

predestined or happens randomly or it's a combination of both. It is something to mull over for a

long time.

2. Plot summary

Forrest Gump was born in southern Alabama, a small city, and his mother. His leg was

his life, causing the audience. [2]

3. Culture

3.1 The behavior features of Gump

From the above discussion, the readers can find that Forrest is a person whose intelligence is

lower than average. His vocabulary is limited and he always uses simple and even mistaken words.

In spite of these shortcomings, he lived a successful life. Once he did something, he would try his

best to finish it. He knew he was not smart, but he cherished self-respect, loyalty, discipline, and

long-term dedication as his principles towards life. [3]

3.1.1 Running

As the story opened, Forrest was being fitted to fix a back that’s “as crooked as a politician”. But

Gump ran right out of those braces and once he started running, he never stopped. He ran far away

from the bullies. He ran through college on a football scholarship. He ran through the flame and

smoke of war in Vietnam and was awarded a congressional medal of honor. He even ran across

country to become a folk hero. Also he ran to meet Jenny and won her heart at last. Forrest ran
