Lesson 1: Greetings and Introductions
Aim: To introduce common greetings and expressions for
introducing oneself and others.
Objective:
- Students will be able to understand and use basic greetings in
social situations.
- Students will be able to introduce themselves and others using
simple phrases.
- Students will develop listening and speaking skills through
practice activities.
Time: 45 minutes
Materials:
- Flashcards or pictures of greetings and expressions (e.g., Hello,
Hi, How are you?, etc.)
- Small slips of paper with names of students or fictional people
Warm-up:
1. Greet the students as they enter the classroom and model
different greetings (e.g., Hi, Good morning, etc.).
2. Ask students to greet each other using different expressions.
3. Lead a short discussion about the importance of greetings in
different cultures.
Presentation:
1. Show flashcards or pictures of greetings and expressions one by one.
2. Pronounce each expression clearly and have the students repeat
after you.
3. Practice pronunciation and intonation by drilling the expressions
with the whole class.
Example dialogue:
Teacher: Hello, class!
Students: Hello, teacher!
Teacher: Hi, Sarah!
Sarah: Hi, teacher!
4. Introduce simple phrases for introducing oneself and others,
such as "My name is..." and "This is..."
Example dialogue:
Teacher: My name is Miss Johnson. What's your name?
Student: My name is Kevin.
Teacher: Nice to meet you, Kevin. This is Sarah.
Practice:
1. Divide the class into pairs or small groups.
2. Distribute slips of paper with names of students or fictional
people.
3. In their groups, students take turns introducing themselves and
the person on their slip of paper to each other.
Example dialogue:
Student A: Hi, my name is Peter. What's your name?
Student B: My name is Lisa. Nice to meet you, Peter! Student A: Nice to meet you too, Lisa. This is Mark.
4. Monitor the groups and provide assistance as needed.
5. Have some students share their introductions with the whole
class.
Wrap-up:
1. Ask some students to share their experiences from the activity.
2. Recap the key expressions and phrases learned in the lesson.
3. Assign exercises or homework to reinforce the materials covered.
Extension (for fast finishers or extra time):
- Students can create a short skit using the greetings and
introductions learned in class.
- Students can write a short paragraph introducing themselves and
their classmates.
