Lenin and his wife Krupskaya translated a long English book into Russian. But when they went to England in 1902, English people couldn’t understand a word they said and they couldn’t understand what was said to them. These days more and more foreigner s are coming to China and more Chinese are going out to foreign countries to work or study. So the spoken language is becoming more and more important.Speaking, of course, can’t go without listening. If you want to pronounce a word correctly, first you must hear it correctly. Thy sounds of the Chinese and English languages are not exactly the same. If you don’t listen carefully, you’ll find it difficult or even impossible to understand the native speakers.Well, what about writing? Like speaking, it’s to exchange ideas. People generally use shorter words and shorter sentences in their writing. The important thing is to make your idea clear in your head and then to write it in clear lively language.Chinese students read far too slowly. If you read fast, you understand better. If you read too slowly, by the time you have reached the end of a page you have forgotten what the beginning is about. When you meet with new words, don’t look them up in the dictionary. Guess the meaning from the context. Y ou may not guess quite correctly the first time, but as new words come up again and again in different contexts, their meaning will become clearer and clearer. If you look up every word, you’ll never finish a book.Students of a foreign language need a particular knowledge, the knowledge of the life, history and geography of the people whose language they are studying. They should study these subjects in the foreign language, not only in translation. In this way one can kill two birds with one stone: learn a foreign language and get some knowledge of the foreign country at the same time.1. How many points are there in the passage?A. TwoB. ThreeC. FourD. Five2. In his first point the writer told us ____________.A. how to speak EnglishB. how to read and writeC. why spoken English is importantD. why English people couldn’t understand Lenin3. In his last point the writer advised us ____________.A. to kill two birds with one stoneB. to learn two languages at a timeC. to study all the subjects in a foreign languageD. to get some knowledge of the foreign country whose language you are studying4. In the fourth paragraph the writer gave some advice on ___________.A. how to read fasterB. how to guess the meaning from the contextC. how to look up new words in the dictionaryD. how to grasp the general meaning of a passage5. “To kill two birds with one stone” means ___________.A. to get some particular knowledgeB. to get more than what one paysC. the stone is too bigD. the birds are blind enough(7)February 14th, V alentine’s Day, is a complicated but interesting occasion. First of all, V alentine’s Day is not a holiday from work. No one gets a day off. In many countries it is observed by sending cards to your friends and candy or flowers to your husband or wife if you’re married, or to your boy friend or girl friend if you’re not married. In Japan, some girls even give their fathers chocolates. Why is this holiday for people in love called V alentine’s Day?One explanation comes from a Christian man whose name was something like“V alentine”. He lived at a time when the Roman Emperor refused to allow any Roman soldiers to get married for any reason. Many couples came to V alentine to be married. So he would secretly marry them in a Christian ceremony. He was discovered and put in prison by the Emperor. One tradition says that he wrote notes to his friends by marking on leaves and then throwing them out of the window of his prison. The leaves were shaped like a heart. V alentine was killed on February 14th and V alentine’s Day recalls his tragic death. On V alentine’s Day, American elementary school children make or buy V alentine cards, write the name of a classmate on them, and take them to school and put them in a special V alentine’s Day box. And then on that day the box is opened, the cards are taken out and given out.1. Which of the following is true about V alentine’s Day?A. It is observed by sending flowers to one’s husband or wife.B. Children in Japan give their fathers chocolates.C. It is a legal holiday in many countries.D. People send candy to each other.2. The man called V alentine was put in prison because ________.A. American school children don’t _______ on V alentine’s Day.A. buy V alentine cardsB. make cards for their teachersC. give each other V alentine cardsD. put their cards in a V alentine’s Day box(8)Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, politics, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Y et, no one can learn everything from school.A teacher, no matter how much he knows, can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves. It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula. It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a math problem. Great scientists befor e us didn’t get everything from school. Their teachers only showed them the way. Edison didn’t even finish primary school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They would ask many questions as they read. They did thousands of experiments. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. Above all, they knew how to use their brain.1. People go to school to _________.A. learn several subjectsB. make a livingC. get an educationD. learn from teachers2. According to the passage, the most important thing a teacher should do is _________.A. to teacher his students everything he knowsB. to know everythingC. to teach the students how to thinkD. to teach the students how to study by themselves3. To work out a math problem, you need to know _________.A. only a certain formulaB. more than one formulaC. some factsD. the method to solve it4. Why were many scientists so successful?A. They received good education.B. They were very clever.C. They knew how to learn.D. They learned lots of facts and formulas.5. How did great scientists study?A. They read a lot of books and asked many questions while reading.B. They did thousands of experiments.C. They always worked hard and never wasted time.D. All of the above.(9)The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied them. It often discomforts me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I don’t want to, because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at a n American’s dinner party, he very often refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in china, but it is not in the West at all. In the US it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on him accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say “No, thanks”. When an American is fed with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks, I’ll ta ke some Diet. Pepsy–cola if you have it.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the US, you had better remember the famous saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”.1. From the passage, we know that the Chinese are usually _______ to the guests.A. eager to give all they haveB. politeC. impoliteD. cold2. When a foreigner has dinner with a Chinese host, he often feels _________.A. pleasantB. uncomfortableC. satisfiedD. happy3. It is only when we can not see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.People who are farsighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts(白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them. When night falls, colours become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the sides of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you can see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they can’t see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive in daylight, is not as sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark.1. We don’t know that our eyes are of great importance until ___.A. we think about our eyesB. we cannot see clearlyC. we wear glassesD. we have to do much reading2. People who are farsighted _________.A. cannot do a lot of close work without glassesB. can only see things that are very close to their eyesC. have difficulty reading a book if they hold it at arm’s lengthD. have the same problem as the nearsighted people5. To see a small thing at night, it is better to look _________.A. with wide open eyesB. with half-shut or narrow eyesC. straight at itD. in a slightly different direction(11)Hi, dear boys and girls!

40 Years ago the idea of disabled people doing sport was never heard of.But when the annual games for the disabled were started at Stoke Mandeville,England in 1984 by Sir Ludwig Guttmann, the situation began to change.Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who had been driven to England in 1939 from Nazi Gernamy, had been asked by the British government to set up an injuries centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital near London. His ideas about treating injuries included sport for the disabled. In the first games just tow teams of injured soldiers took part. The next year,1949,five teams took part. From those beginnings, things have developed fast.T eams now come from abroad to Stoke Mandeville every year.In 1960 the first Olympics for the Disabled were held in Rome,in the same place as the normal Olympic ,but let it pass instead .You know that to commit the action is wrong in some way and that otherpeople will not accept your behavior .Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of taboo behavior is how can change over the years within the same society ,how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectly acceptable and natural at another point in time .T opics such as death, for example, were once considered so upsettting and unpleasant that it was a taboo to even talk about them. Now with the publication of important books such as On Death and Dying and Learning to Say Goodbye ,people have become more aware of the importance of expressing feelings about death and ,as a result ,are more willing to talk about this taboo subject. One of the newest taboos in American society is the topic of fat. Unlike manty other taboos, fat is a topic that americans talk about constantly. It's not taboo to talk about fat ;it's taboo to be fat. The "in " look is thin ,not fat .In the work world ,most companies prefer youthful-looking ,trim executives to sell their image as well as their products to the public. The thin look is associated with youth, vigor, and success. The fat person, on the other hand ,is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy ,self-discipline ,and self-respect. After all ,people think ,how can people who care about themselves ,and therefore the way they look, permit themselves to become fat ? In an image-conscious society like the U.S.,thin is "in" ,fat is "out".It's not surprising ,then ,that millions of americans have become obsessed withstaying slim and "in shape ". The pursuit of a youthful physical appearance in not ,however ,the sole reason for american's obsession with diet and exercise .Recent research has shown the critical importance of diet and exercise for personal health .As in most technologically developed nations ,the life-style of north americans has changed dramatically during the course of the last century. Modern machines do all the physical labor that people were once forced to do by hand .Cars and buses transport us quickly from point to point. As a result of inactivity and disuse ,people's bodies can easily become weak and vulnerable to disease. In an effort to avoid such a fate, millions of americans are spending more of their time exercising .The effect of this new appreciation of the importance of exercise is evident: parks are filled with joggers and bicyclists, physical education programs are enjoying a newly found prestige ,and many companies are providing special exercise facilities for their employees to use during the work day.1.Form the passage we can infer taboo is _____.a. a strong desire to do something strange or terribleb. a crime committed on impulsec. behaviour considered unacceptable in society 's eyesd. an unfavourable impression left on other society's people2.Based on the ideas presented in the passage we can concluded "being fat" _____ in american society.a. will always remain a taboob. is not considered a taboo by most peoplec. has long been a tabood. may no longer be a taboo some day3.The topic of fat is _____ many other taboo subjects .a. the same asb. different formc. more popluar thand. less often talked about than4.In the U. S. ,thin is "in " ,fat is "out ",this means ______.a. thin si inside ,fat is outsideb. thin is diligent ,fat is lazyc. thin is youthful ,fat is spiritlessd. thin is fashionable ,fat is unfashionable5.Apart from this new understanding of th correlation between health and exercise ,the main reason the passage gives for why so many americands are exercising regularly is _____.a. their changed life-styleb. their eagerness to stay thin and youthfulc. their appreciation of the importance of exercised. the encouragement they have received from their companiesPassage 1The Causes of ConflictThe evidence taken from the observation of the behavior of apes and children suggests that there are three clearly separable groups of simple causes for the outbreak of fighting and the exhibition of aggressiveness by individuals. One of the most common causes of fighting among both children and apes was over the possession of external objects. The disputed ownership of any desired object—food, clothes, toys, females, and the affection of others—was sufficient ground for an appeal to force. On Monkey Hill disputes over females were responsible for the death of thirty out of thirty-three females. Two points are of particular interest to notice about these fights for possession. In the first place they are often carried to such an extreme that they end in the complete destruction of the objects of common desire. Toys are torn to pieces.Females are literally torn limb from limb. So overriding is the aggression once it has begun that it not only overflows all reasonable boundaries of selfishness but utterly destroys the object for which the struggle began and even the self for whose advantage the struggle was undertaken. In the second place it is observable, at least in children, that the object for whose possession aggression is started may sometimes be desired by one person only or merely because it is desired by someone else. There were many cases observed by Dr Isaacs where toys and other objects which had been discarded as useless were violently defended by their owners when they became the object of some other child's desire. The grounds of possessiveness may, therefore, be irrational in the sense that they are derived from inconsistent judgments of value. Whether sensible or irrational, contests over possession are commonly the occasion for the most ruthless(残忍的) use of force among children and apes. One of the commonest kinds of object arousing possessive desire is the notice, good will, affection, and service of other members of the group. Among children one of the commonest causes of quarreling was "jealousy"—the desire for the exclusive possession of the interest and affection of someone else, particularly the adults in charge of the children. This form of behavior is sometimes classified as a separate cause of conflict under the name of "rivalry" or a "jealousy". But, in point of fact, it seems to us that it is only one variety of possessiveness. The object ofdesire is not a material object—that is the only difference. The object is the interest and affection of other persons. What is wanted, however, is the exclusive right to that interest and affection—a property in emotions instead of in things. As subjective emotions and as causes of conflict, jealousy and rivalry are fundamentally similar to the desire for the uninterrupted possession of toys or food. Indeed, very often the persons, property which is desired, are the sources of toys and food.Possessiveness is, then, in all its forms a common cause of fighting. If we are to look behind the mere facts of behavior for an explanation of this phenomenon, a teleological ( 目的论的) cause is not far to seek. The exclusive right to objects of desire is a clear and simple advantage to the possessor of it. It carries with it the certainty and continuity of satisfaction. Where there is only one claimant to a good, frustration and the possibility of loss is reduced to a minimum. It is, therefore, obvious that, if the ends of the self are the only recognized ends, the whole powers of the agent, including the fullest use of his available force, will be used to establish and defend exclusive rights to possession.Another cause of aggression closely allied to possessiveness is the tendency for children and apes greatly to resent the intrusion of a stranger into their group. A new child in the class may be laughed at, isolated, and disliked and even set upon and pinched and bullied. A new monkey may be poked and bitten to death. It isinteresting to note that it is only strangeness within a similarity of species that is resented. Monkeys do not mind being joined by a goat or a rat. Children do not object when animals are introduced to the group. Indeed, such novelties are often welcomed. But when monkeys meet a new monkey or children a strange child, aggression often occurs. This suggests strongly that the reason for the aggression is fundamentally possessiveness. The competition of the newcomers is feared. The present members of the group feel that there will be more rivals for the food or the attention of the adults. Finally, another common source of fighting among children is a failure or frustration in their own activity. A child will be prevented either by natural causes such as bad weather or illness or by the opposition of some adult from doing something he wishes to do at a given moment—sail his boat or ride the bicycle. The child may also frustrate itself by failing, through lack of skill or strength, to complete successfully some desired activity. Such a child will then in the ordinary sense become "naughty". He will be in a bad or surly temper. And,94what is of interest from our point of view, the child will indulge in aggression—attacking and fighting other children or adults. Sometimes the object of aggression will simply be the cause of frustration, a straightforward reaction. The child will kickor hit the nurse who forbids the sailing of his boat. But sometimes—indeed, frequently—the person or thing that suffers the aggression is quite irrelevant and innocent of offense. The angry child will stamp the ground or box the ears of another child when neither the ground nor the child attacked is even remotely connected with the irritation or frustration.Of course, this kind of behavior is so common that everyone feels it to be obvious and to constitute no serious scientific problem. That a small boy should pull his sister's hair because it is raining does not appear to the ordinary unreflecting person to be an occasion for solemn scientific inquiry. He is, as we should all say, "in a bad temper". Yet it is not, in fact, really obvious either why revenge should be taken on entirely innocent objects, since no good to the aggressor can come of it, or why children being miserable should seek to make others miserable also. It is just a fact of human behavior that cannot really be deduced from any general principle of reason. But it is, as we shall see, of very great importance for our purpose. It shows how it is possible, at the simplest and most primitive level, for aggression and fighting to spring from an entirely irrelevant and partially hidden cause. Fighting to possess a desired object is straightforward and rational, however disastrous its consequences, compared with fighting that occurs because, in a different and unrelated activity, some frustration has barred the road to pleasure. The importance of this possibility for an understanding of group conflict must already be obvious.1. The observation of apes leads to aggressive activities in the group.2. The passage mainly describes 3 separable groups of causes of conflict.3. Intrusion by a strange animal is certain to result in a fighting among children for survival.4. In order to win parents' affection, children may fight with each other.5. Children are likely to fight for the possession of a certain object.6. It is possible that one gets addicted to aggression to punish the sources of frustration.7. People take aggressive actions so as to climb up the social ladder.8. Fighting occurs because frustration has______to pleasure.9. It seems that jealousy is only one variety of______.1.0. The exclusive right to objects of desire is accompanied by the______ofsatisfaction.Passage 2Women are also underrepresented in the administration and this is because there are so few women 11 professors. In 1985, Regent Beryl Milburn produced a report blasting the University of Texas System administration for not 12 women. The University was rated among the lowest for the system. In a 1587 update, Milburn 13 and praised the progress that was made and called for even more 14One of the positive results from her study was a system-wide program to inform women of available administrative jobs.College of Communication Associate Dean, Patricia Witherspoon, said it is important that woman be 15 when it comes to relocating if they want to 16 in the ranks.Although a woman may face a chilly 17 on campus, many times in order for her to succeed, she must rise above the problems around her and concentrate on her work.Until women make up a greater 18 of the senior positions in the University and all academia, inequalities will exist."Women need to spend their energies and time doing scholarly activities that are important here at the University. Their values—this can't be repeated too often—are notnecessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone in bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car, it needs more mechanical maintenance as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results. And at what point should you cease to treat the old body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by pursuing the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate(激活) the old body, knowing that it is designed to die? You cannot ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel bound to give them a try, on the principle that while there's life, there's hope. When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.21. However, chances are that you don't act on your impulse, but let it pass instead. You know that to commit the action is wrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior.Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of taboo(禁忌的) behavior is how it can change over the years within the same society, how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectly acceptable and natural at another point in time. Topics such as death, for example, were onceconsidered so upsetting and unpleasant that it was a taboo to even talk about them. Now with the publication of important books such as On Death and Dying and Learning to Say Goodbye, people have become more aware of the importance of expressing feelings about death and, as a result, are more willing to talk about this taboo subject. One of the newest taboos in American society is the topic of fat. Unlike many other taboos, fat is a topic that Americans talk about constantly. It's not taboo to talk about fat; it's taboo to be fat. The "in" look is thin, not fat. In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking, trim executives to sell their image as well as their products to the public. The thin look is associated with youth, vigor, and success. The fat person, on the other hand, is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy, self-discipline, and self-respect. In an image-conscious society like the U. S. , thin is "in", fat is "out".It's not surprising, then, that millions of Americans have become obsessed (着迷) with staying slim and "in shape". The pursuit of a youthful physical appearance is not, however, the sole reason for America's obsession with diet and exercise. Recent research has shown the critical importance of diet and exercise for personal health. As in most technologically developed nations, the life-style of North Americans has changed dramatically during the course of the last century. Modern machines do all the physical labor that people were once forced to do by hand. Cars and busestransport us quickly from point to point. As a result of inactivity and disuse, people's bodies can easily become weak and vulnerable to disease. In an effort to avoid such a fate, millions of Americans are spending more of their time exercising every day.26. The tenements, four to six stories high, crowded along alleys, which served as air-shafts. Only a few of the rooms faced the alley; the majority of the rooms had access to neither light nor air. There was little or no inside plumbing, and frequentlythere was but a single sink with running water for an entire tenement. There were no playgrounds, no parks, and few schoolhouses in such areas. There were saloons(公共大厅) ; there was plenty of vice and crime; andthere was disease. On New York's East Side, the death rate for children in 1888 was 140 per 1000. Today it is about 7 per 1000. Contagious diseases such as typhoid fever, smallpox, diphtheria, scarlet fever, and tuberculosis took a frightful toll every year. In the 1890's, Jacob Riis, a Danish immigrant, began writing stories about the conditions among the poor who lived in Murderers' Alley, Hell's Kitchen, Poverty Gap, the Lung Blocks, and the Bowery. His book, How the Other Half Lives, stirred the conscience of the nation. People on other parts of the country began to see that the conditions in New York which he so vividly described might also exist in the cities where they lived. In rural districts the poor found life equally hard. Hamlin Garland, novelist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wrote graphically(生动地) of the hardships of life on the Middle Border. He described the hard work on the farm. There was no romance in getting up at five o'clock in the morning with the temperature thirty degrees below zero. "It required military discipline to get us out of bed in a chamber warmed only by the stovepipe, to draw on icy socks and frosty。
