AOwl City isn’t a place. It’s a band, but a band with only one member named Adam Young. The 29-year-old American singer & songwriter rose to global fame in 2009 with just one dreamy and happy song, Fireflies, which paints a picture of “getting 1,000 hugs from 10,000 lightning bugs (虫子)”. Next month, Young is singing his songs to fans across China, with one show in Beijing on May 14, 2015, another in Guangzhou on May 19.Adam describes himself as somewhat of a loner. It’s true, considering that he mostly does interviews via e-mail. While in high school, Young neither had a large network of friends nor participated in a lot of after-class activities, so music became important to him. After school, Young would spend hours alone in the basement of his parents’ late-Victorian farmhouse. The windowless place eventually became the base for all of his musical creations, which were otherwise light and optimistic.Even after he went on to college, it remained a place where he could work out the ideas that had been in his head all day during his schoolwork and his job with Coca-Cola. He spent two years packing and loading trucks in their storehouses. In the summer of 2007, Young completed the recording of seven tracks. Adopting the name Owl City, he uploaded his music to the social networking site MySpace, and the response was unbelievable. One thing led to another and he was offered a deal.Owl City’s songs have always had a lot of imagery (意象) in them, and his first full-length album Ocean Eyes has good examples. Young’s music style basically came from his imagination in the basement. “I would just imagine and daydream, blocking everythin g out,” he told Relevant magazine.21. What if she has a point?Steve Siebold, author of “How Rich People Think,” spent nearly three decades interviewing millionaires around the world to find out what separates them from everyone else. It had little to do with money itself, he told Business Insider. It was about their mentality.Average people think money is the root of all evil (罪恶). Rich people believe poverty is the root of all evil. “The average person has been brainwashed to believe rich people are lucky or dishonest,” Siebold writes. Rich people believe you have to be something to get rich. “While the masses are attached to the doing and the immediate results of their actions, the great ones are learning and growing from every experience, whether it’s a success or a failure, knowing their true reward is becoming a human success machine that eventually produces outstanding results,” he writes.Average people would rather be entertained than educated. Rich people would rather be educated than entertained. The rich don’t think it a must to earn their wealth through formal education, and they appreciate the power of learning long after college is over, Siebold says. “Walk into a wealthy person’s home and you often see many books used to educate themselves on how to become more successful,” he writes. “The middle class reads novels, tabloids (小报) and entertainment magazines.”28. Indoor air pollution results from the use of dangerous fuels and cook-stoves in the home.WHO officials say nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating and lighting. 高中英语真题:某中学2015届高三下学期第三次模拟考试试卷试题.doc一、阅读理解(共5题)1.On August 16, 1977, Elvis Presley saved me.The previous afternoon, I played with my six-year-old peers in Heather Peter s’ backyard. I was enjoying my cake, when Heather asked me where my sleeping bag was. Only then did I know this party was a sleepover. The word “sleep-over” to a six-year-old bed-wetter is like what “cancer” means to an adult. But what if I told them I was a bed-wetter? At least with cancer, people gather at your bedside instead of running from it.I thought of a way to escape. I would explain that I needed my mother's permission to spend the nights. But as I called my Mom, Heather stood beside me to listen. She granted permission! Then I would be sleeping in the same living room as the other girls. I didn't bring my own pajamas (睡衣),so Mrs. Peters offered me Heather's pajamas. As the other girls drifted into their sweet dreams, I tried to stay awake. “Do I need to go again? I'll stay up to go one more time.. .”.Of course , I finally fell asleep. The next morning , I was the first to wake up. I was warm! I lay in panic for what seemed like hours before the other girls started to wake up. I did the only thing I could do —I pretended that the bed-wetting didn't happen. I got up, took off Heather's pajamas and changed into my clothes like the other girls.Mrs. Peters walked into the room, and before she could say anything, she stepped right onto the pile of my wet pajamas. My heart stopped as I watched her face burn red. “WHO DID THIS?” She screamed, with a look so frightening. Should I answer? And that was when it happened — Mr. Peters came in and grabbed his wife , ‘‘Elvis Presley died!”The news of the King's death overtook Mrs. Peters, and I ,was spared. Students with talent in sports and students who are from ethnic groups can also benefit from this policy. The extra credits have increased these students' chances of being admitted by famous universities. Some parents were found to have helped their children fabricate(伪造)award experiences or falsify qualifications to get extra credits.“It has harmed education equality,” the ministry said.Xiong Bingqi, vice-chief of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, said the policy is designed to help students who have special talents but may be weak in academic performance to have a chance to receive higher education. It will still be needed but it is time to make the rules fairer," he said. The ministry said it will reduce the range of competitions whose winners can get extra credits, and limit the winners, privileges. The new policy will apply to students who begin high school in 2011, it said.Chen Lei, a mother of a 10-year-old girl, said she welcomed the ministry's policy adjustment as she does not want her daughter to become an Olympic competition geek. But not all the Chinese pare nts welcomed the new policy. “It is like a thunderbolt for me. My 13-year-old son has spent so much time studying Olympic math, and participated in so many technological competitionsduring vacations. It is useless now,” said Dong Wen, a 43-year-old mother.A student said, “Many students have changed the current study plan, and they can abandon the competition. I will be interested in learning the courses which can improve my abilities.”Yuan Guiren, minister of education, told China Daily that the reform is an attempt to consider the overall quality of an applicant. “But the country will not stop the national college entrance examination as it is still the most objective way to evaluate talent in China,” he said.25. On behalf of the for side, I think that we needn’t be over worried.Firstly, it does not necessarily ruin Chinese culture. Actually, most Chinese have not ignored their native festivals. Traditional Chinese festivals still see larger population than western festivals. Secondly, it is a part of global cultural communication. While we are absorbing advanced science and technology from foreign countries, we are also taking in different cultures. Thirdly, most Chinese, especially the youth, celebrate western festivals merely out of the wish to connect with friends and create an entertaining atmosphere. In a word, while we attach importance to the protection of traditional Chinese culture, we needn’t worry too much about the celebration of western festivals.听力原文第一节Text 1W: Excuse me, do you know how to get to the library?M: You see that teaching building ahead? Hofman has “thrown” the Rubber Duck into some harbor cities. Last May his giant yellow duck received a warm welcome in Hong Kong. Millions of visitors from across Asia went to Victoria Harbor to see the duck and take pictures. Hong Kong business created duck-inspired products and dishes in honor of their yellow duck. And when Rubber Duck was ready to leave, thousands crowded at Victoria Harbor to wave a teary-eyed goodbye. In reality, there’s more than one Rubber Duck. Hofman uses local teams to build local models of the duck because he believes it makes repairs easier. Last fall one model was on a river in Pittsburgh while another one was in Kaohsiung! The Pittsburgh model was 12 meters, but the Kaohsiung one stands 18 meters tall. Most of Hofman’s other works are big, too, like Fat Monkey, about 15-meter-long. In addition, Steelman is an 11-meter-tall bear sculpture to inspire the area’s youth to be tough like bears!Hofman’s work appeals to all ages. Regarding Rubber Duck, Hofman believes it can help adults reduce anxiety. As he says, “The rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages!”。

While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It‟s the least I could do. Please, I insist.” Jimmy agreed.Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the intervie wer‟s office with disappointed looks on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy‟s heart sank.“With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” He thought to himself. Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy‟s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company.“Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into this office. I'm not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is.However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in additional to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things, it'll require even more time, time that most people won't put in.This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.Whatever you do , if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won't guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.25. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ______.A. the reasons for success.B. the meaning of successC. the standards of success.D. the importance of success26. In Paragraph 2, the underlined word "that" refers to _______.A. being good at something.B. setting a practical goal.C. putting in more time.D. succeeding in life27. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A. Successful people like to show their great skills.B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life.D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.28. What is the main theme of the passage?A. Having a goal is vital to success.B. Being good is different from being great.C. One cannot succeed without time and practice.D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.C.Interested in sharing your views in the Campus Link? The answer is easy. There are so many kinds of cold viruses that there isn’t a cure for each one. When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood rushes to your nose and you can’t breathe well, but your body is actually eating the virus. Your temperature rises and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a running nose to stop the virus from getting to your cells. You may feel miserable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold. Different people have different methods to feel better. Americans might eat chicken soup to feel better. Germans take hot baths and drink warm liquids. Other people take medicine to relieve various symptoms of colds. There's one interesting thing to note. Some scientists say taking medicine when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn’t develo p a way to fight it and kill it.。

AOwl city isn’t a place. It’s a band, but a band with only one member named Adam Young. The 29-year -old American singer and songwriter rose to global fame in 2009 with just one dreamy and happy song, Fireflies, which paints a picture of “getting 1,000 bugs from 10,000 lightning bugs(虫子)”. Next month, Young is singing his songs to fans across China, with one show in Beijing on May 14,2015, another in Guangzhou on May 19.Adam describes himself as somewhat of a loner. It’s true, considering that he mostly does interviews via e-mail. While in high school, Young neither had a large network of friends nor participated in a lot of after-classactivities, so music became important to him. In the summer of 2007, Young completed the recording of several tracks. Adopting the name Owl City, he uploaded his music to the social networking site MySpace, and the response was unbelievable. One thing led to another and he was offered a deal.Owl City’s songs have always had a lot of imagery(意象)in them, and his first full-length album Ocean Eyes has good examples. Indoor air pollution results from the use of dangerous fuels and cook-stoves in the home.WHO officials say nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating and lighting.
