本门课虽然是一门选修课程，但是，它对学生进一步学习和掌握英美文学有着重要的辅助作用。
因此，要求学生在培养自己学习兴趣同时，增加短篇小说理论知识，更重要的是，加强学生对短篇小说理解及分析能力。

2. 一般了解：作者的生平，所选短篇小说涉及的与英国和美国文化相关的背景知识。
三、课程内容与学时分配第一讲英美短篇小说简介（4学时）1. 重点：短篇小说的概念、短篇小说的基本要素、Rip Van Winkle和The Minister's Black Veil的基本要素及主旨内涵。
