Afternoon Tea of UK
Good morning! My name is Zxxxx Qxxxxxxxx, and my major is Instrumentations Science and Technology. In my presentation today, I’m going to share the afternoon tea of UK with you.
My presentation will be in four main parts. In the first part I will give you the origin of British afternoon tea. Secondly, I’ll show you the basic rites. Then, I’ll display some fine tea ware for you. Lastly, I’ll share the low tea with you.
Ok, Let us begin from the history of low tea. Vitoria times 1840, British Bei Dove Duchess Anna invited a few intimate friends with tea and dim sum to share the relaxing afternoon time. Unexpectedly, soon the behavior becomes a fad in aristocratic social circle, a preference for ladies. Now, it has been to create as a comfortable elegance of afternoon tea culture and also become the orthodox "tea culture", which is also called the "Vitoria tea", “afternoon tea” or “low tea”.
Now, let’s learn the basic rites of the traditional low tea. Traditional low tea is typically held between 4pm and 5pm. In the Victorian era, upper-class men would wear a tuxedo, while women would change into long gowns for their afternoon tea. Usually, the hostess will wear formal dresses and offer a personal service for the guests. And they are not willing to ask for the help from their maid. They think this is respect for their guests.
“Three - layer” tea, I believe, is one bright spot of the traditional British low tea. For formal low tea, the snacks are in a three layers plate. The first is tea sandwich; the second is traditional dessert scones; the third is cake and fruit tart. We should eat them from bottom to top. For scone, we should spread jelly first and then butter before each bite. The etiquettes for eating snacks should comply with the order: from light to heavy and from salty to sweet.
Drinking tea do the main character in low tea. In general, a special English afternoon tea with Keemun black tea, India Darjeeling black tea, Earl Grey tea, and Highlands of
Ceylon tea. Traditionally, loose tea is brewed in a teapot and served with milk and sugar. For milk tea, it is adding milk first and then tea.
Besides, the delicious snake and the mellowness tea, the fine tea ware is the important part of British low tea. They like to enjoy variety of tea during low tea. And ceramic tea ware is the most common.
So, as we have seen in this presentation today, Victoria afternoon tea is a comprehensive art, simple but not shabby, gorgeous but not vulgar…Although the time for tea and the pure English dessert is one of the most important part of the orthodox British afternoon tea, a good tea, porcelain, music, good mood are more important than them.
Thank you for your attention, and if there are any questions, I’d be happy to answer them. Thank you.。
