The channels that run alongside the street are called by this name as it was the philosopher Hobson who provided money to a 17th-century scheme to bring fresh water to Cambridge this way.The scale of Cambridge's history is often brought home to you in a way that can make you only shake your head in wonder. Hobson's Conduit runs outside the entrance to Pembroke College that was founded in 1347, and so was almost 400 years old by the time the Conduit was built. The gatehouse that leads into the first courtyard is the oldest one in Cambridge; to the right, and at the end of a passage is the entrance to Pembroke Chapel (彭布罗克礼拜堂). Built in 1663--1665, this was the first classical style building in Cambridge and the first major architectural work by SirChristopher Wren, who went on to design many public buildings in London.Cambridge's first college was Peterhouse (彼得豪斯学院), founded in 1284 and located almost opposite Pembroke. One student who moved from Peterhouse to Pembroke was the poet Thomas Gray (托马斯·格雷), best known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (《写于乡间墓地的挽歌》). He regarded most of the other students there as drunks and had a rope fitted outside the window of his rooms, which he believed to be at risk from fire. His fellow students would shout “Fire!” so often outside his window that he eventually moved across the road to Pembroke. In 1757, he refused the invitation to become the official poet of England, but stayed in Cambridge to become a professor of history and modern languages in 1768.Peterhouse Chapel (彼得豪斯礼拜堂) has an interesting history. It was built in 1628 but then seriously damaged by Cromwell's (克伦威尔) troops in the 1650's, during their fight to eliminate the King and form a republic. Its stained glass of east window was hidden to protect it from Cromwell's soldiers, but was put back in 1660 after a new king came to power. It survives in one piece, over 300 years later.A curious comparison is with the fate of Oliver Cromwell's head, over the same 300 years. Cromwell died in 1658; after his death the new king had Cromwell dug up, hung and beheaded. The king was obviously taking no chances on him coming back. His body was buried again and his head hung on a pole, where it stayed for the next twenty years. It blew off in a storm and a man took it home; one can only imagine the state of this "treasure". The head proceeded to pass through various hands until in 1960, exactly 300 years later, the head was secretly buried somewhere in Sidney Sussex College (西德尼·萨赛克斯学院), on Sidney Street (西德尼大街), which Oliver Cromwell had attended. The secrecy was necessary as it was felt that modern defenders of the crown might still try to steal the head and destroy it. A sign outside the entrance to the chapel bears witness to the event.After such a violent tale you may want to retire to the more peaceful retreat of one of the college gardens, such as at Christ's College (基督学院). Pass through the gateway and look to the left to see the entrance to the rooms in which John Milton (约翰·弥尔顿) stayed when he was a student here in the early 17th century, while in the middle of the wall on the right are the stairs which lead to the rooms occupied by Charles Darwin 200 years later.
