Evolution of Confucianism and its influence
Confucianism, which dominated Chinese culture over 2000 years, has distinct characters that influenced Chinese science and economic development profoundly in two stages. It is helpful to learn Chinese culture through those characters.
The first stage is among BC 3rd to AC 12th. In this period, the Confucian scholars make numerous efforts to propagate the Confucian sprits which advocate benevolence and righteousness. Government didn’t forced people to believe Confucian. Its binding force comes from moral power rather than ruling power. Scientists and businessmen have freedom to pursue technology and wealth that was significant in the development of science and economic. Benevolence and righteousness, which advocated by Confucianism, structured a moral system to prevent excessive greed and violence in academia and business. Confucianism is a key factor that leaded to the prosperity of Chinese science and economic during the period.
Confucianism turned to the second stage when the development of economic had threatened the domination of Confucianism in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). The Confucian scholars gradually accepted the Neo-Confucianism submitted by a famous Confucian scholar Zhu xi, which focused on perishing normal desire and called on people to loyal to emperor. Government took Neo-Confucianism as “Bible” .Penalty would be given when anyone disobeyed the doctrine of Neo-Confucianism. Pursuing technology and wealth would be seem as greed and would be prohibited in the doctrine of Neo-Confucianism. Since then, Confucianism has become the shackles of Chinese people and lead to the depression of economic and science.。
