This is a good rule to follow when you try to judge the cleverness of others by their looks and performance. Some people have minds that shine only in certain situations. A young man with an unusual gift in novel writing may find himself speechless before a prettygirl. But don’t make the mistake of thinking he might not be that clever. With a pen and paper, he can tell what he thought very well.Other people may fool you into mistakenly thinking they are clever by putting up a good front.A student who listens carefully and takes notes in class is sure to make a good impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may get scores much lower than his classmates. We may conclude that: you can’t judge someone by appearances. The only way to tell whether a person is clever or not is to get to know him by observing(观察) how he reacts to different situations. With a bit of creativity, you can help your child enjoy reading more, and encourage him to do more!Buy or borrow a lot of “fun” books. Choose books that are slightly below his level of reading ability. Don’t for get what your child likes to do when choosing books for him. Don’t comment about the books. Simply leave the books lying on the table where your child is sure to see them. Computer games are not as harmful as most parents usually think them to be. Instead, you should take advantage of your child’s love of computer games to purchase those that require a lot of reading and avoid those that are simply computerized video games.Buy your child a bedside reading lamp, or a tiny book light. Tell him that from now on, he must be in bed by a specific time (say 8:30) and that he can either sleep or read. Most kids will do anything else rather than go to sleep, so there’s a chance you’ll create a new bedtime reading habit. Many children will read when they are sitting alone having a snack, or when they have a few minutes of unplanned free time. Put a box of books and magazines near thekitchen table so that reading material is accessible.Often, once children learn to read independently, parents stop reading to them. This change of routine causes great sadness to a child who has come to love falling asleep as you read. Even a teenager will enjoy being read to if you pick books that interest him. Select books together, and make sure they’re ones you enjoy as well, so your enjoyment will come through as you read to them.50. To make children become interested in reading, parents should _______.A. tell them what they can learn from these booksB. choose books based on their interestC. choose the easiest books for them to readD. always read books together with them51. The majority are from multi-million dollar companies. Do you really think these businesses achieved success with a one-time, fix-all diet plan? No, they count on having most people return on a recurring basis; hence the term "yo-yo dieting". A lot of diet plans can be very limiting. You are required to follow a certain meal plan, which may consist of certain foods. Some plans are more exact and restrictive than others. Some diet companies even supply you with the actual meals. This means even more revenue(收入) for these businesses.A well-balanced diet consists of carbohydrates that are low in sugar (they're sometimes referred to as "good carbs"), proteins, and fats. (Yes, fats are important, too.) Fortunately for you, a well-balanced diet is all that is needed to safely and effectively lose or maintain weight, depending upon your goals.By educating yourself and having the willpower and commitment to make the proper food choices, you'll be well on your way toward achieving your weight-loss goals. After all, in order for a diet to be really successful, it cannot be just a diet. You must develop and conform to(遵守) a lifestyle that revolves around smart food decisions. This doesn't mean that you can never enjoy certain things that you crave(渴望), at least from time to time. We can all enjoy such things, but moderation is the key. A week's worth of smart choices deserves a meal out at your favorite restaurant. It also gives you something to look forward to and enjoy when you are saying "no" to those office donuts all week long.Don't get me wrong. It isn't always going to be easy. But rarely does anything worth having come easily. Liking what you see in the mirror, and being fit and healthy are definitely worth working hard for. Anyone can achieve such goals. A week’s smart food choices itself, not a meal out, is a big reward for you.D. A week’s proper food at home is as attractive as a delicious meal outside.4.What’s the correct attitude towards the food you like?A. Have some whenever you like.B. In my opinion, nothing beats speaking to another person face to face. The first and most obvious advantage that a face communication has over a letter and e-mail is that there is the ability to interactively(相互作用地)converse. If the sender of a letter or an email does not write clearly, then much time must be spent to clear up the misunderstanding. In a face-to-face conversation, misunderstandings are easily dealt with because of the interactive nature of it.I would still argue that the face-to-face conversation is better because you can see the other person. Not all communication is verbal(口头的); the meaning of much of what we say depends on our body language and the tone of voice. Joking and irony are particularly difficult to express and enjoy without seeing the expression on someone’s face, or watching the movements of their body. Finally, if the goal of communication is to maintain or deepen the relationship(关系)with someone, the face-to-face communication offers the choice of communication by touch even if we could communicate by the video. Trust and respect between business partners can be established with a firm handshake. No amount of body language can convey the excitement of a high five between friends, and no number of words can communicate the comforting embrace of a loved one. Touch is the first basic method of our human relationships, before spoken language, and it is only available when people communicate face to face.54. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. How to communicate more effectively(有效率地)B. The importance of using body language in communicationC. The author’s attitude towards forms of communication is .A. Modern forms of communication like phone calls and e-mail are extremely convenient.B. These days everyone is worried about the size of their carbon footprint. In order to reduce global warming we need to make our carbon footprints smaller. But how much CO2 are we responsible for?But all of this can help us decide which beer to drink. From Berners-Lee’s calculations, it’s clear that a pint 〔568ml〕 of locally-brewed beer has a smaller carbon footprint than a bottle of imported beer. This is because the imported beer has been transported from far away, and it uses more packaging. The local beer only produces 300g of CO2, but the imported beer produces 900g! So, one pint of local beer is better for the environment than three cans of cheap foreign lager 〔淡啤酒〕 from the supermarket.Berners-Lee has even calculated the carbon footprint of cycling to work.Nothing is more environmentally-friendly than riding a bike, surely? Well, it depends on what you’ve had to eat before. To ride a bike we need energy and for energy we need food.So if we eat a banana and then ride a kilometer and a half, our footprint is 65g of CO2.However, if we eat bacon before the bike ride, it’s 200g.In fact, bananas are good in general because they don’t need packaging, they can be transported by boat and they grow in natural sunlight.5.According to Berners-Lee, which of the following produces the most carbon dioxide?A.A pint of local beer we drink.B.A pint of imported beer we drink.C.A banana we eat before a bike ride.D.The bacon we eat before a bike ride.6.Why are bananas good in general?A.They grow naturally.B.They produces less CO2.C.They don’t need packaging.D.They provide energy for cycling.7.The underlined word “brewery〞in Paragraph 3 most probably means “___________〞.A.a factory where beer is madeB.a machine which makes beerC.a container where beer is storedD.one of the things from which beer is made8.To make our carbon footprints smaller, we should often ___________.A.cycle to workB.drink more local beerC.cal culate the amount of CO2D.buy cheap things from the supermarkets9.What’s the most suitable title for the passage?A.Bikes, Beer and BananasB.Starting to Make ChangesC.How Big Is Your Carbon Footprint?D.The Carbon Footprint of Everything参考答案〔B〕 BBAACWhat’s clea r is that, whether we like it or not, the Internet is an ever growing part of our lives and there is no turning back.“The Internet is just 20% invented,〞says cyber pioneer Jake Winebaum.“The last 80% is happening now.〞10.What can we learn from the Micros oft’s remark?A.Today’s cars a nd airplanes are extremely overpriced.B.Information technology is developing at an amazing speedC.Information technology has reached the point where improvement is difficult.11.According to the author, the biggest benefit of the Internet is that___.B.it speeds up profit making]C.it brings people incredible convenienceD.it provides easy access to informationA.there are some genius ideas on the InternetB.almost anything is available on the InternetC.people can find good bargains on the InternetD.some websites provide novel services to increase hits13.What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?D.The U.S.will stay ahead in the information technology in years.14.Which sentence has the phrase that possesses the same meaning as the one underlined in the fifth paragraph?B.Think nothing of it.It was my pleasure.C.He thinks nothing of staying up all night in the Café bar.D.He thinks nothing of the pain in his back for the moment.15.What is the message the author intends to convey?A.The Internet is going to get firm hold of our lives some day.B.The Internet is going to influence our lives even more greatly.C.We should have a positive attitude towards the changes the Internet brings. Some of the things you see give off light of their own. The sun, the stars, a lighted lamp are examples that can be seen by their own light. Such things are luminous. Most of the things you see are not giving off light of their own. They are simply reflecting light that falls on them from the sun or some other luminous bodies. The moon, for example, does not give off any light of its own. It is non-luminous. You see it because sunlight falls on it and some of it reflects in our direction. So moon light is only second hand sunlight. When you look at a book, it sends to your eyes some of the light which falls on it, and you see the book. If light could be kept out from where you are so that there would be no light for the book to reflect, then you could not see the book even with your eyes wide open.1. You can see the book because_______.A. your eyes are close to itB. it reflects some of the sunlightC. it has light of its ownD. your eyesight can get to it2. 2014高考英语阅读理解精英定时练习题(16)及答案阅读理解------A 篇Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea.People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some ofthem were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea.Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thoughtthey must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.At firs t, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening No one ever thought of drinking teain the afternoon until a duchess (公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it.She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born.46.Which of the following is true of the introduction of tea into Britain?A. But there is another factor that can cause yourheart problems more immediately: the air you breathe.Previous studies have linked high exposure(暴露) to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke (中风) within as little asa few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants (污染)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure.A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers to be of "moderate" (良好) quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as muchas 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure. The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such assmoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of thesedangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestylechoices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect publichealth.53. 2014高考英语阅读理解精英定时练习题(2)及答案阅读理解(每题2分,共40分)AEveryone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with. Sure, there are times when we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend. No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad. We miss them very much. But we can call them and write to them. Maybe we wound never see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named in this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places. There is more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those people who don’t have friends. Why? One billion people are learning it and it is said that by 2050, half of the world’s population will be using it. What are we talking about? That is the global language—English. The English language started in Britain in the 5th century. It is a mixed language. It was built up when German. Scandinavian and French invaders settled in England and created a common language for communication.Today it is the official language of the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Ireland as well as many islands in the Caribbean. Many other countries and regions use it for politics and business, for example, India. Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines. Norway参考答案----------------41—45 CAABD阅读理解------A篇In a society such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious and cultural differences, people highly value individualism--the differences among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize all possible basic knowledge. Instead, they work individually and find answers by themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions. In most Asia societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the orient reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. There are advantages and disadvantages of both systems of education. For exam ple, one advantage of the system in Japan is that students there learn much more about math, physics, biology and chemistry than American students by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized. The advantage of the educational system in North America, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values cre ative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from school, they haven’t memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.46.The writer’s purpose of writing this passage is_________.A.to sha re his idea with others in a new wayB.to introduce two different systems of education through contrastC.to criticize the society that values memorizationD.to prepare students for society47.Which is NOT true according to the passage?A.The system of education in the West is more creative than that in the EastB.Japanese students learn much more about science than American students.C.Canadian students are more individual than Korean students.D.Students in North America are not so friendly as those in Asia.48.From the facts, we can infer that .A.Asian students are more likely to do better in teamwork than American students B.Chinese students are more hard-working in their studies than Mexican studentsC.the Western educational system is much better than the Eastern educational system.D.the Eastern educational system is as difficult as the Western educational system.49.What is the best title for the passage?A.Advantages and Disadvantages of Educational System.B.The Value of Individualism.C.Educational System---an Obvious Difference between the East and the West. D.Memorization----an Important Learning Method.参考答案46—49、BDAC阅读理解------B篇In recent years, advances in medical technology have made it possible for people to live longer than in the past. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50. When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting. The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have at least a little of the local currency(货币) with you when you arrive in a country. This can be necessary if you are flying to a place few tourists normally visit. A few years ago I was sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma. I flew there from London via(经由)Dallas, with very little time to change planes in between. I arrived there at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead.“Listen! I only take real money!” the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was embarrassing (令人难堪的).The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destinationbefore you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suit and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.46. According to the passage, it’s obvious that______A. The author learns some rules of traveling from his own experience.B. The author doesn’t plan his trips or journeys carefully.C. Englishmen like to wear heavy suits wherever they travelD. The America taxi driver never travels to England.47. What should you make sure first before setting off?A. When you will leave.B. Where you will go.C. How you will travelD. Whom you will go with.48. According to the passage, the driver was angry because_______A. the author gave him false moneyB. the author did not give him the local currencyC. the author did not give him moneyD. the author had no enough change49. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The author tells people to choose warm places as their travel destinations.B. You don’t have to take credit cards when traveling.C. You should know more abou t the weather of the place you’ll visit.D. You should take enough change when you travel to other countries.50. What is the main idea of the passage?A. A few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.[B. Always check and double-check departure time.C. It is important to have the local currency with you when you arrive in a country.D. To find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave.参考答案----------46—50 AABCASurfing the Internet for fun will make you a better employee, according to an Australian study. The University of Melbourne study shows that people who use the Internet for their own reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive than those who do not. Study author Brent Coker said, “Surfing the Internet at times helps increase an employee’s attention.”“People need to relax for a bit to get back their attention,” Coker said on the university’s website. “Having a sho rt break, such as a quick surfing of the Internet, helps the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total Internet attention for a day’s work, and as a result, increases productivity(生产效率),”he said.According to the study of 300 workers, 70 percent of people who use the Internet at work surf the Internet for their own reasons during office hours. Among the most popular surfing activities are searching for information about products, reading online news, playing online games and watching videos. “Firms spend a lot of money on software to block their employees from watching video, using social networking sites or shopping online,” said Coker. “That’s not always a good idea.”However, Coker said the study looked at people who surfed the Internet in moderation (适度), or were on the Internet for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office. “Those who spend too much time surfing the Internet will have a lower productivity than those without,” he said.51. 2014高考英语阅读理解精英定时训练题(11)及答案【甘肃省天水一中2013模试】DWhen a dirty and untidy orange cat showed up in the prison yard,I was one of the first to go out there and pet it.I hadn’t touched a cat or a dog in over 20 years.I spent at least 20 minutes, knelt down behind the kitchen as the cat rolled around, relaxed. What he was expressing outwardly, I was feeling inwardly. It was an amazing bit of grace to feel him under my hand and note that I was reaching a life or another creature with something as simple as my care.Over the next few days, there were other prisoners responding to the cat.Every yard period,a group of prisoners gathered there. They stood around talking and taking turns petting the cat. These were guys you wouldn’t usually find talking to each other.Several times I saw an officer in the group, not chasing people away, but just watching and seeming to enjoy along with the prisoners.Bowls of milk and water appeared along with bread, wisely placed under the edge of the dustbin to keep the birds from getting it.The cat was obviously homeless and in pretty bad shape.People said that the cat came to the right place. He's getting treated like a king. This was true.but as 1 watched 1 was also thinking about what the cat was doing for us.There was a lot of talk about what's wrong with prisons in America. We need more programs. We need more psychologists(心理学家) or treatment of various kinds. Some may even talk about making prisons more kind. But I think what we really need is a chance to practise our own kindness. Not receive it,but give it.After more than two decades here,I know kindness is not a value that's encouraged. It's often seen as a weakness.Instead, the culture encourages keeping your head down, minding your own business, and never letting yourself be weak. The cat did my heart good to see the effect he had on me and the men here.By simply saying,“I need some help here ”,he did something important for us.He needed us.And we needed to be needed.I believe we all do.46.From the passage,we can learn that the author was .A.an animal protector B.the cat owner C.a prison officer D.a prisoner 47.Which of the following statements is true?A.The cat was dirty because it was kept in prison.B.The officer in the prison enjoyed petting the cat.C.The prisoners prepared food for both the cat and birds.D.The author realized the importance of practising kindness.48.We can infer from the third paragraph that .A.showing love to others can make prisoners strongB.the American prison culture will be improvedC.the author is not content with the prison cultureD.caring for others is encouraged in American prisons49.What is the best title for the passage?A.Caring Makes Us Human.B.Prison Culture is Important.C.Animals Need Care.D.Everyone Needs to be Cared for.50. sorts of flowers grew there, blooming in their proper order as the months went by, one flower taking another flower’s place, so that there were always beautiful things to see, and pleasant odors to smell.Hans had many friends, the most devoted being the Miller. So devoted was the rich Miller to Hans that he’d never go by his garden w ithout plucking a large bunch of flowers or a handful ofsweet herbs, or filling his pockets with fruits. The Miller used to talk about noble ideas, and Hans nodded and smiled, feeling proud of having such a friend. The neighbors thought it strange that the rich Miller never gave Hans anything in return, though he had hundreds of sacks of flour, many cows and sheep, but Hans never troubled his head about these, and nothing gave him greater pleasure than to listen to all the wonderful things about the unselfishness of true friendship. In spring, summer, and autumn Hans was very happy, but when winter came, and he had no fruit or flowers to sell, he suffered from cold and hunger.Though extremely lonely, the Miller never came to see him then.“There’s no good in going to see H ans while the snow lasts.” The Miller said to his wife, “When people are in trouble they shouldn’t be bothered. So I’ll wait till the spring comes when he’s happy to give me flowers.”“You’re certainly very thoughtful,” answered his wife, “It’s quite a treat to hear you talk about friendship.”“Couldn’t we ask Hans up here?” said their son.“I’ll give him half my meal, and show him my white rabbits.”“How silly you are!” cried the Miller.“I really don’t know what’s the use of sending you to school. If Hans came up here, and saw our warm fire, our good supper, and our red wine, he might get envious, and envy is a most terrible thing, and would spoil anybody’s nature.I am his best friend, and I’ll always watch over him, and see that he’s not led into any temptation.Besides, if Hans came here, he might ask me for some flour.Flour is one thing, and friendship is another, and they shouldn’t be confused. The words are spelt differently, and mean quite different things.Everybody can see that.” He looked ser iously at his son, who felt so ashamed that he hung his head down, and grew quite scared, and began to cry into his tea.Spring coming, the Miller went down to see Hans.Again he talked about friendship.“Hans, friendship never forgets.I’m afraid you don’t understand the poetry of life.See, how lovely your roses are!”Hans said he wanted to sell them in the market to buy back his things which were sold during the hard time of the winter.“I’ll give you many good things.I think being generous is the base of friendship.” said theMiller.“And now, as I’ll give you many good things, I’m sure you’d like to give me some flowers in return. Here’s the basket, and fill it quite full.”Poor Hans was afraid to say anything. He ran and plucked all his pretty roses, and filled the Miller’s basket, imagining the many good things promised by the Miller. The next day he heard the Miller calling: “Hans, would you mind carrying this sack of flour for me to market?”“I’m sorry, but I am really very busy toda y.”“Well,” said the Miller, “considering that I’m going to give you my things, it’s rather unfriendly of you to refuse.Upon my word, you mustn’t mind my speaking quite plainly to you.”Poor Hans was driven by his friendship theory to work hard for his best friend, leaving his garden dry and wasted. One evening Hans was sitting by fire when the Miller came.“Hans,” cried the Miller, “My little boy has fallen off a ladder and hurt himself, and I’m going for the Doctor. But he lives so far away, and it’s such a bad windy night. It has just occurred to me that you can go instead of me.You know I’m going to give you my good things, so you should do something for me in return.”“Certainly,” cried Hans.He struggled into the stormy night, and got the doctor to ride a horse to the Miller’s house in time to save the boy. However, Hans got lost in the darkness, and wandered off into a deep pool, drowned. At Hans’ funeral, the Miller said, “I was his best friend.I should walk at the head of the procession.” Every now and then he wiped his eyes with a Madrid, Paris, Vienna, and Stockholm without going to Europe? The answer is in the state of Maine!Throughout the United States there are many towns and cities that have been named after not only European cities but other countries as well, such as China, Poland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Just how many New World place names are recycled from the Old World names has never been tallied, but one researcher found forty-one Londons, fifty-six Berlins, twenty-four Dublins, thirty-two Athenses, and twenty-seven Moscows, among others!Reasons for European place names differ. Within hours of arriving in Angola, television screens around the world were filled with images of her comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines. “I knew the statistics,” she said. “But putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me; like when I met Sandra, a 13- year-old girl who had lost her leg, and people like her.”The Princess concluded with a simple message: “We must stop landmines”. And she used every opportunity during her visit to repeat this message. But, back in London, her views were not shared by some members of the British government, which refused to support a ban on these weapons. Angry politicians launched an attack o n the Princess in the press. They described her as “very ill-informed” and a “loosecannon”. (乱放炮的人)The Princess responded by brushing aside the criti cisms: “This is a distraction (干扰) we do not need. All I’m trying to do is help.”Opposition parties, the media and the public immediately voiced their support for the Princess. To make matters worse for the government, it soon emerged that the Princess’s trip had been approved by the Foreign Office, and that she was in fact very well-info rmed about both the situation in Angola and the British government’s policy regarding landmines. The result was a severe embarrassment for the government. To try and limit the damage, the Foreign Secretary, Malcolm Rifkidnd, claimed that the Princess’s views on landmines were not very different from government policy, and that it was “working towards" a worldwide ban. The Defence Secretary, Michael Portillo, claimed the ma tter was “a misinterpretation or misunderstanding.”For the Princess, the trip to this war-torn countrywas an excellent opportunity to use her popularity to show the world how much destruction and suffering landmines can cause. When it was introduced, most peo ple did not like it as well as “regular” coffee, and it took several years to gain general acceptance (introduction stage). At one point, though, instant coffee grew rapidly in popularity, and many brands were introduced (stage of rapid growth). After a while, people became attached to one brand and sales leveled off (stage of maturity). Sales went into a slight decline when freeze-dried coffees were introduced (stage of decline). The importance of the product life cycle to marketers is this: Different stages in the product life cycle call for different strategies. The goal is to extend product life so that sales and profits do not decline. One strategy is called market modification. It means that marketing managers look for new users and market sections. Did you know, for example, that the backpacks that so many students carry today were originally designed for the military?Market modification also means searching for increased usage among present customers or going for a different market, such as senior citizens. A marketer may re-position the product to appeal to new market sections.Another product extension strategy is called product modification. It involves changing product quality, features, or style to attract new users or more usage from present users. American auto manufacturers are using quality improvement as one way to recapture world markets. Note, also, how auto manufacturers once changed styles dramatically from year to year to keep demand from falling.45.
