We’ll be hiring two people. You’ll hear from us sometime next month. Good luck! And thanks for coming in today.Text 10M: Well, I’d love to share with you my personal opinions on city life and life in small towns. I grew up in a small town until I was 18 and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. I n ever thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I can’t imagine ever living ina small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a smalltown, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can’t get around without one because there isn’t any kind of public transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you have a choic e of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, if you don’t have a car, you’d better live in the city. I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. How ever, these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. However, you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of course, safety should be considered, and that’s one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more careful and live i n a large city than to feel safe but dull.。

ATen years ago, Morgan Zuch, a two-year-old girl from Long Island, New York, was diagnosed with leukemia (白血病). Morgan’s father, Rod, made a promise, "If my daughter gets better, I will devote the rest of my life to helping out others who are in the same condition."Fortunately, Morgan recovered gradually, and since then, Rod and his wife, Nancy, have been helping other families with cancer-stricken children through the Morgan Center. It is the country’s first preschool (幼儿园) for children with cancer.Because of the risk of germs (细菌), children with cancer are usually forbidden from playing with other kids. They must spend their days in hospital rooms or lying in bed at home. The Zuchs believed that children with cancer should have the opportunity to play, too.The center offers the kids and their families a safe place to connect with others who are dealing with the same problem. To minimize (使……最小化) the risk of infections, the center’s staff wash their own and the children’s hands frequently, and provide each child with their own toys and supplies."You feel like you’re not the 'sick kid’s mom,’" said one child’s mother, Maura Lewinger."It is nice because none of parents at the center are alienated."The Zuchs run the center as a non-profit organisation and it’s free for any of the families who bring their children to the center. Nancy Zuch works as the head teacher —with a little help from her daughter Morgan, now 12 years old. Today, Morgan is strong and healthy, and loves to help the children who are going through the difficult time that she once went through. There are, of course, numerous methods that can help you relax, but only a few of them give you a good night’s sleep. One of them is soothing (舒缓的)music for sleep.Sleep music is not just for promoting relaxation, it also can be used for various situations. Want to have a relaxing evening by yourself? Practice yoga in a comfortable environment? Think over something important? Then put on your favorite sleep music. Sleep music is not only suited for adults, but has also been known to be beneficial for children. Soothing music helps your children go to sleep more easily.Massage therapists (按摩治疗师)can also benefit from using soothing music for sleep in their clinics. This allows clients to benefit more from the session. For example, massage therapists can provide the relaxation of the body through their techniques, and the music helps clients ease their minds, helping them to relax deeper and feel more refreshed after the session. You’ll never run out as there are numerous artists and companies that make sleep music. Choosing the right music is important as well. Like most music that you can find and buy in stores, sleep music has different styles, sounds, and themes. There are those that are specifically targeted for relaxation, while some are intended to help you go to sleep. The gre at thing about sleep music is that it will be something you’ll be using for months, even years to come. If you want a deeper relaxation and better sleep, give some soothing music for sleep a try.25. In fact, half of the 6,000-7,000 languages spoken around the world today will be likely to die out by the next century, according the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars from a number of organizations----UNESCO and National Geographic among them----have for many years been documenting dying languages and the cultures they reflect.Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Center, Y ale University, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he is not content to simply record these voices before they disappear without record. At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials----including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes----which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection. Now, through the two organizations that he has founded----the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project----Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, found in libraries and stores around the world, available not just to schools but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.29.Many scholars are making efforts to .A.promote global languagesB. rescue disappearing languagesC.search for languages communitiesD. set up language research organizations30.What does “that tradition”in Paragraph 3 refer to .A. having detailed records of the languagesB. writing books on language usersC. telling stories about language speakersD. living with the native speakers31. Despite the benefits of cloning, however, certain ethical (道德的) questions concerning the possible abuse (滥用) of cloning have been raised. At the heart of these questions is the idea of humans influencing life in a way that could harm society, either morally or in a real physical sense. Some people object to cloning because it allows scientists to "act like God" in the handling of living organisms. The cloning of Dolly raised the debate over this practice to a whole new level. It has become obvious that the technology for cloning Dolly could also be used to clone humans. A person could choose to make two or ten or a hundred copies of himself or herself by the same techniques used with Dolly. An active debate about the morality of cloning humans arises. Some people see benefits from the practice, such as providing a way for parents to produce a new child to replace one dying of a fatal disease. Other people worry about humans taking into their own hands the future of the human race.At the beginning of the twenty-first century, many scientists say the controversy over the ethics of cloning humans is overstressed because of the unpredictability (不可预测性) ofcloning in general. While scientists have cloned animals such as sheep, mice, cows, pigs, and goats, fewer than 3 percent of all those cloning efforts have succeeded. The animal clones that have been produced often have health problems. Scientists believe the rapid reprogramming in cloning can introduce random (任意的) errors into a clone’s DNA. Those errors have altered individual genes in minor ways, and the genetic defects (缺陷) have led to the development of major medical problems. Some scientists say this should make human cloning out of the question, but others argue that cloning humans may actually be easier and safer than cloning animals. Whatever, I agree that further research in the field of cloning is needed.33. Some people are against cloning of humans because they think _________.A. the practice takes too much time and moneyB. the cloning technology is still not matureC. humans control the future of the human raceD. the population in the world will be too large34. What’s the author’s attitude towards clon ing?A. Uninterested.B. Doubtful.C. Objective.D. Supportive.35. Some scientists think the debate over ethics of cloning humans is overstressed because ______.A. cloning of human beings is completely impossibleB. the result of cloning can’t be predicted in generalC. cloning of animals is a failureD. there are big errors in a clone’s DNA第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
