牛津市长Robert John Price在中国高级公务员访问团欢迎会上的演讲
Distinguished friends of the Chinese Senior Civil Servants Delegation, can I welcome you to
Oxford Town Hall? It’s a great privilege to have you here this afternoon. The Town Hall was built
in 1897, but it stands on the site where there has been a building for our city since the 16th
century. And my office, the Mayor of Oxford was established in 1070, so nearly a thousand years
of there being a city council for Oxford. // The city used to be an important port on River Thames, which can be reflected by its name Oxon-Fordion, two Latin words meaning ‘ox’ and ‘port’. All the
cattle here were slaughtered and shipped down the river on barges. // Oxford is now widely
known over the world for its university and for the very beautiful buildings, which we have in the
city, but it’s also a very important centre for industry. For the second time, in the last decade, our
county has been the fastest growing economy in Britain, fastest growing part of the UK economy. // We have a very large number of companies in biotechnology, in information technology, in
medical sciences, and in publishing. Of course, the BMW car plant is located here. We in the next
few years plan to have many more industries which are created from our university base. Our
university has a very strong research record and is increasingly spinning out new companies,
employing new people in this area. //
For those of you who are interested in the problems of the future rather than the past, we are
very aware of the difficulties of climate change here, and as a city, we are seeking to make our
contribution to cleaning the problems of pollution and reducing the volume of traffic in the country. // Next April, a conference, international conference will be hosted in this Town Hall of
“Solar City”. The Mayor of Beijing will be one of the people who would be here as part of the
delegation. // To conclude, I hope that your time here will be interesting, that you learn about
British governmental system, and that you will actually take back with you some good memories
of Oxford as a city to visit. And we hope you come back in the future. We just had the first tour from Chinese tourists to this country. Of course we would like to have many more to come as well.
Thank you very much!//
