Learning English is by no means easy. It takes great diligence and prolonged effort.Nevertheless, while you cannot expect to gain a good command of English without sustained hard work, there are various helpful learning strategies you can employ to make the task easier. Here are some of them.1. Do not treat all new words in exactly the same way. Have you ever complained about your memory because you find it simply impossible to memorize all the new words you are learning? But, in fact, it is not your memory that is at fault. If you cram your head with too many new words at a time, some of them are bound to be crowded out. What you need to do is to deal with new words in different ways according to how frequently they occur in everyday use. While active words demand constant practice and useful word must be committed to memory, words that do not often occur in everyday situations require just a nodding acquaintance. You will find concentrating on active and useful words the most effective route to enlarging your vocabulary.2. Watch out for idiomatic ways of saying things. Have you ever wondered why we say, "I am interested in English", but "I am good at French"? And have you ever asked yourself why native English speakers say, "learning the news or secret", but "learn of someone’s success or arrival"? These are all examples of idiomatic usage. In learning English, you must pay attention not only to the meaning of a word, but also to the way native speakers use it in their daily lives.3. Listen to English every day. Listen to English on a regular basis will not only improve your ear, but will also help you build your speaking skills. In addition to language tapes especially prepared for your course, you can also listen to English radio broadcasts, watch English TV, and see English movies. The first time you listen to a taped conversation or passage in English, you may not be able to catch a great deal .Try to get its general meaning first and listen to it over and over again. You will find that with each repetition you will get something more. Before he sailed round the world single-handed, Francis Chichester had already surprised his friends several times. He had tried to fly round the world but failed. That was in 1931.The years passed. He gave up flying and began sailing. He enjoyed it greatly. Chichester was already 58 years old when he won the first solo transatlantic sailing race. His old dream of going round the world came back, but this time he would sail. His friends and doctors did not think he could do it, as he had lung cancer. But Chichester was determined to carry out his plan. In August, 1966, at the age of nearly sixty-five, an age when many men retire, he began the greatest voyage of his life. Soon, he was away in his new 16-metre boat, Gipsy Moth.Chichester followed the route of the great nineteenth century clipper ships. But the clippers had had plenty of crew. Chichester did it all by himself, even after the main steering device had been damaged by gales. Chichester covered 14,100 miles before stopping in Sydney, Australia. This was more than twice the distance anyone had previously sailed alone. He arrived in Australia on 12 December, just 107 days out from England. He received a warm welcome from the Australians and from his family who had flown there to meet him. On shore, Chichester could not walk without help. Everybody said the same thing: he had done enough; he must not go any further. But he did not listen.Unit 3Some one said to a man, “Travel and see the world.” He answered, “Why should I? People are the same everywhere. They are born. They are babies. They are children. They are adults. They grow old. They die. While they are alive, they have the same emotions. They feel love and hate, happiness and sadness, security and fear, pride and shame, comfort and discomfort. That is why I do not want to travel. I can learn everything here. I’m going to stay home.”The man was right. He was also wrong. People are the same, but people are also different. They all have the same pattern of life—birth, youth, old age, death. Butthese stages of life have different values in different cultures. Also, while all people have the same emotions, the causes of these emotions are different. A situation that may bring happiness in one place may not bring happiness in another place.Unit 4I would like to propose that for sixty to ninety minutes each evening, right after the early evening news, all television broadcasting in the United States be prohibited by law.Let us take a serious, reasonable look at what the results might be if such a proposal were accepted. Families might use the time for a real family hour. Without the distraction of TV, they might sit around together after dinner and actually talk to one another. It is well known that many of our problems — everything, in fact, from the generation gap to the high divorce rate to some forms of mental illness —are caused at least in part by failure to communicate. We do not tell each other what is disturbing us. The result is emotional difficulty of one kind or another. By using the quiet family hour to discuss our problems, we might get to know each other better, and to like each other better. On evenings when such talk is unnecessary, families could rediscover more active pastimes. Freed from TV, forced to find their own activities, they might take a ride together to watch the sunset. Or they might take a walk together (remember feet?) and see the neighborhood with fresh, new eyes.Unit 6If you ask my mother how I happened to become an industrial engineer, she'll tell you that I have always been one.She means that I have always wanted everything to be well organized and neat. When I was still in elementary school, I liked to keep my socks in the upper left-hand drawer of my bureau, my underwear in the upper right drawer, shirts in the middle drawer, and pants, neatly folded, in the bottom drawer. In fact, I was the efficiency expert for the whole family. I used to organize myfather's tools, my mother's kitchen utensils, my sister's boyfriends.I needed to be efficient. I wanted to be well organized. For me, there was a place for everything and everything was always in its place. These qualities gave me a good foundation for a career in industrial engineering.Unfortunately, I was also a bit bossy and I wasn't a very good listener. You'll see what I mean when I tell you about the first project I ever did after I finished my bachelor's degree at the university. After graduation I returned home to my small town in Indiana. I didn't have a job yet. Mr. Hobbs, a friend of my father's, owned a small shirt factory in town. Within the past five years it had grown from twenty to eighty workers. Mr. Hobbs was worried that his plant was getting too big and inefficient, so he asked me to come in on a short-term basis as a consultant.Unit 7She was still speaking when an elderly gentleman limped up to the counter and began looking closely at the row of puddings with great interest.“Why, that’s the very gentleman I’ve been telling you about,” whispered the shop girl. “Just watch him now.” And then turning to him: “Would you like to sample them, sir? Here’s a spoon for you to use.”The elderly gentleman, who was poorly but neatly dressed, accepted the spoon and began eagerly to sample one after another of the puddings, only breaking off occasionally to wipe his red eyes with a large torn handkerchief.“This is quite good.”“This is not bad either, but a little too heavy.”All the time it was quite evident that he sincerely believed that he might eventually buy one of these puddings, and I am positive that he did not for a moment feel that he was in any way cheating the store. Poor old chap! Probably he had come down in the world and this sampling was all that was left him from the time when he could afford to come and select his favorite pudding.。

A Strong Body and MindKnowledge is power. But we must remember that a strong mind needs a strong body in order to make it most effective. There are many good exercises to make your body strong. Any exercise that allows maximum use of different body movements is good. Outdoor sports are the best because of fresh air, but indoor sports can be effective also. Our bodies can get more oxygen by doing exercise. The more exercises you do, the healthier you’ll become. Don’t neglect your body. It is as important as your mind. Take ActionSuccessful people are intensely action-oriented. They seem to move faster than unsuccessful people. They are busier. They try more, and they try harder. They start a little earlier and they stay a little later. They are in constant motion. Unsuccessful people, on the other hand, start at the last moment necessary and quit at the first moment possible. They are fastidious about taking every minute of coffee breaks, lunch hours, sick leave, and vacations. They sometimes brag, “When I am not at work, Inever even think about it.” FriendsEveryone needs friends to talk with, laugh, feel closeness, and do things with. There are times when we need to be alone, though. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend. No two people are the same. Sometimes f riends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away and we miss them. Maybe we will never see them again. Luckily, we can call them and write to them.Tod ay’s technology allows us to have more friends in more places than ever before.I'd like to talk about books. A good book is like a good friend. You should read as many books as you possibly can. You shouldn't just take a quick look at a book. You should read it carefully again and again. There is a famous quote. A man who doesn't read books is far worse off than a man who can read books. Make books your friends and let books take you aroud the world. Get a book now and dive into it. Let the wisdom contained in books guide you through your life.I want to tell you something very important today. I want to tell you the life about choices. You can choose to be miserable or you canchoose to enjoy your life. You can choose to improve your health or you can choose to destroy it. I hope you'll make correct choices. I hope you'll choose to enjoy your family, enjoy your friends, enjoy your work, and enjoy your everyday life. Life is a gift, and we really should enjoy every minute of it. Join the group of people who make good choices and enjoy your life. Have fun learning EnglishBefore you begin studying English, ask yourself one question: Why do I want to study English Is it because you want to, or because someone else wants you to Like every decision in life, studying English must be something you want to do.
Topic 1:Understanding Chinese Culture and TraditionWhat is a Confucian lifestyle? What can people of other cultures learn from it?Confucian lifestyle is regarded as a lifestyle to become a good and responsible person. Usually, it means that we should be more focused on education, more respectful of old people, better able to subordinate private needs to public good, more responsible to the needs of family, more polite in our daily lives, and more hardworking. No matter where you are from, you can learn a lot from Confucian lifestyle. Initially, its focus is on the world itself, as a place where ultimate meaning is found. It can help people find the sacred in the relationships of ordinary life, such as in preparing and sharing meals with family and friends, in harmonious and respectful relations in the workplace. Then, Confucian lifestyle gives people a chance to learn to become virtuous by seeing others and by being inspired by their example, which can help people all over the world grow in the arts of becoming good people. What’s more,Confucianism is a leaning toward harmony as life’s highest ideal. The harmony has a democratic spirit, respectful of the voices of individuals as well as groups. Therefore, living in a Confucian lifestyle can help people of other cultures have a better understanding of harmony and enrich the practice of other cultures.Topic 2:Gaining a Foothold in the Business WorldWhat is more important for an enterprise in order to be successful, linear thinking or lateral thinking?Lateral thinking is more suitable for people with a short attention span while linear thinking is preferred by people who can stay focused. For different stages of an enterprise, linear thinking and lateral thinking have different importance. In a start-up, lateral thinking is more important. Lateral thinking calls for solving problems with indirect and creative approaches, and always calls for expanding possibilities, which is quite necessary in a start-up. In a start-up, the entrepreneur is constantly being pulled off course when plans don’t go as planned. Lateral thinking will help entrepreneurs come up with appropriate measures to deal with difficulties. In mature companies, linear thinking is more important. Linear thinking is based on logic, rules and rationality. It follows step-by-step patterns, which makes it possible for people to stick to the plan as required. Therefore, linear thinking is required in more mature companies where getting several hundred or several thousand people to stick to a plan is absolutely necessary to get anything done. Lateral thinking and linear thinking are of different importance in different stages of an enterprise. However, only an enterprise has both can it be successful and develop.Topic 3:Smart Technology, Smart LifeWhat benefits can we enjoy from technological innovations? What challenges have been brought about by evolving technologies? With the development of society, technological innovations have become inevitable. Technological innovations also bring us many benefits. First of all, technological innovations facilitate our lives. We can enjoy all kinds of movies on TV and keep in touch with our family with mobile phones. The Internet connects people all over the world. Secondly, technological innovations promote enterprises to improve efficiency to meet the requirements of economic development. They can improve the economic benefits of enterprises, reduce costs and open up markets. In addition, technological innovations are important forces to promote the development of society, which promote the rapid increase of social wealth and the fundamental improvement of people's lives. However, evolving technologies also brought a lot of challenges. Initially, although evolving technologies facilitate our lives, they make people lazier. When doing some things, people often choose technologies instead of doing it by themselves. Then, one of the most serious problems about evolving technologies is the shortage of outstanding people. Without talents, the huge manpower and resources of technology can’t promote scientific advances. Besides, innovation is still the biggest challenge. Only scientific and technological innovation can fundamentally cause revolutions again and again, thus promoting the development of science and technology.Topic 4: Great Men, Great MindsWhy is Du Fu called one of China’s greatest poets? What can we still learn from Du Fu’ poetry nowadays? The Tang Dynasty is regarded as a golden age of classic Chinese poetry, with thousands of poets producing an incredible quantity of works.Du Fu is called one of China’s greatest poets. I think there are three reasons. First of all, Du Fu is highly accomplished in poetry. No matter from themes or expression skills, Du Fu brought advantages of the predecessors into full play. He not only inherited the advantages of his predecessors, but also created something new in the summary. Secondly, Du Fu's poems are epic poems, which record the situation of the Tang Dynasty's prosperity and decline period for us. His poems combined personal experience with the times and made his life a reflection of history. Finally,Du Fu is a poet who cares about the country and the people. Du Fu used his poems to reflect the sufferings of the people, care about social problems and express his feelings. From Du Fu's poems, the most intuitive thing is to know the history of the Tang Dynasty. His poems widely reflected the social reality. Then, reading Du Fu's poems can make us feel a patriotic heart. We should learn to love our motherland. Moreover, Du Fu learned from predecessors, summed up his literary and artistic experience, and formed his own unique poetic style and artistic features. We should also learn from others like Du Fu to sum up and improve ourselves.Topic 5: Studying AbroadWhat are the benefits and drawbacks of studying abroad? What should be taken into consideration when you plan to study abroad? With the development of society, more people choose to study abroad in order to gain better education, which has become an increasingly prevalent trend. It’s generally accepted that studying abroad has many advantages over studying at home. Initially, there is no doubt that our foreign languages and communication skills will improve rapidly. Furthermore, students can expand their knowledge and gain qualifications that open the door to better job opportunities. Additionally, there are more choices to understand various cultures and customs, which will broaden our horizons. Nevertheless, some drawbacks should be paid attention. Above all, finance is the most difficult part for many families. What’s worse, no one knows whether overseas students will adapt to the local environment and blend into the local crowd. When I plan to study abroad, I will take a lot into consideration. For example, which university is best for my development and career planning, how can I adjust my habits to the life abroad, whether I can communicate with others in English fluently, how should I plan my spending and whether my family can afford it. Only taking into consideration my actual situation can I make the right choice.Topic 6: Experiencing the Charm of NatureWhat is the importance of coexistence of humans and nature? What should we do to maintain this coexistence? As we all know, coexistence of humans and nature is very important. For humans, it is of great importance to the survival of human beings and providing a livable environment for human beings. In the ecological environment of nature, all kinds of creatures are interdependent. If the nature is damaged, the balance of the whole natural ecological chain will be threatened, and the survival of human beings will be threatened. At the same time, excessive damage to nature will increase the pollution of human living environment. For the nature, coexistence of humans and nature is the most powerful measure to protect nature. With the development of society, human factor is the main factor of destroying the environment. If human beings live in harmony with nature, it will minimize the damage to nature and other creatures. In my opinion, we should maintain the coexistence from three aspects. Firstly, we should establish the concept of respecting and protecting nature. Nature provides us with many conveniences for our daily necessities, such as food, cloth and house. Secondly,it is necessary to love other creatures because the earth is the home of human and other creatures. Thirdly,we should protect the environment from everyday things to reduce pollution. For example, don’t litter. Only each of us can achieve these points can we truly live in harmony with nature.。

As a freshman in university, I have encountered various challenges and changes compared to my previous high school life. Firstly, the academic workload has increased significantly. The professors assign more readings, assignments, and projects, requiring me to spend more time studying and completing them. This workload demands a higher level of discipline and time management skills.Secondly, the pace of learning is much faster. The professors cover more content in a shorter period of time, which means I need to be prepared and keep up with the class material. This has pushed me to develop effective note-taking and studying strategies to ensure I understand the concepts and can apply them in assignments and exams.Another significant difference is the level of independence expected from me. In university, I amresponsible for managing my own time and setting priorities for my studies. This has required me to develop strongself-discipline and organizational abilities. I have also learned to seek help from professors, teaching assistants, and classmates when needed, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Moreover, university life has exposed me to a diverse range of perspectives and ideas. The student body comes from different backgrounds and has different experiences, which has broadened my worldview and challenged my own beliefs. Engaging in discussions with classmates and participating in group projects has helped me develop critical thinking skills and the ability to articulate my own ideas clearly and respectfully. Finally, campus life has provided me with opportunities to explore my interests and develop new skills. I have joined clubs and organizations that align with my passions, such as the debate team and the music club. Theseactivities have not only enriched my university experience but have also helped me develop leadership qualities andinterpersonal skills.

(examples).but why can’t we absorb the meaningful western holidays and culture.there are obvious reasons why some western holidays are so popular in china. on the one hand, some of the western holidays which we chinese don’t have are reasonable and meaningful, such as father’s day and april fool’s day etc. on the other hand, the prevalence of globalization enables western culture to prevail in china. overwhelmed by such atrend, chinese unconsiciously get involved in western holidays and culture.with the further development of the whole world, the cultural communication between different countries and nations becomes faster and more and more important. we are indeed from different nations, but we are the citizens of the same world, so the outstanding culture of different nations is the commom wealth of everyone on the only way for us to protect our traditional culture is to reject the foreign culture? the answer is definitely no. what we ought to do is to spare no effort to educate chinese to get to know and treasure our splendid traditions instead of rejecting foreign culture. only by educating can we set our confidence and belief towards our culture. only by educating can we preserve and promote the wealth that our ancesters left for us.at last i’d like to share a famouse saying of gandhi with all of you ,that is:if you want to change the world, then you must change yourself first.” 3the most important event in my life(口语考试的演讲稿)good morning,everyone!it\'s a great pleasure to stand here to share my own story with you.what\'s the most important event in your life?different people may have different i have gotten my answer these days----that is coming to wuyi university where my life has great changes,in other words, the university life has brought many “first times” to me----the new experience.when i was at high school,i was told that the university life was wonderful, full of freedom and chanllenges,so i was really looking forward to my own life in university, dreaming of the beautiful campus, interesting courses and all kinds of activities.however, when it really came to me,it\'s a different story at the took my first step into the campus with disappointment, beacause the buildings look too old and still remember the day when daddy drove me here and i was unwiling to get out of the car and say goodbye to the way to jiangmen,i hope if only the car slowed down or the road was longer.there\'s no doubt that as a freshman i couldn\'t adapt myself to the new life here due to the differences between university life and high school life,in particular the one dependent like i was at a boarding school, however, living in the university is not the same as before, you know,it\'s the first time for me to be so far away from felt homesick and even a little afraid, and i phoned mummy and daddy almost every \'s more,at home mummy and daddy do everything for me,because i am a child forever in their eyes,so they always protect me from being now i have to learn to be independent and do everything by myself.as time goes by,i have met new friends who make me feel at ease on have managed to adjust myself to the life here,furthermore,i\'ve learnt a lot from university far away from home,i get to realize how deeply i love my family and how deeply they love though they\'re not around me here in jiangmen,i was able to take good care of myself;i can wash my clothes by my own hands;i can put away my things by myself;i can go shopping with my roommates.now i am a member of the environmental protection association of wuyi university,wherei\'ve gotten a lot of opportunities to train myself and broaden my mind, such as working out the function plan and giving others a lesson on environnmental protection, and all of these are i make every effort to work on one thing, finally i make it,and the feeling is really got my first part-time job last can imagine how exciting i was when i got my paid after hours\' i understand the old saying\'\'no pain,no y ou think you can,you can!“大学英语口语话题范文篇4Pet topic: do you agree or disagree with the following statement AAA supports your answer with specific reasons and details: A is better than B you agree or disagree with this statement support your point of view with specific reasons AB disagree the undeniable fact is (if aperson should / if is right) is a hot topic many people are talking about, but people all over the world / in modern times The undeniable fact in society is that (if one should / if one is right) is a hot topic for a long time (because it affects everyone\'s daily life, so the undeniable fact is that (if a person should / if he is right) is a basic (moral / philosophical) problem that no one can avoid, because of the view on it If (there is news that a new cinema may be built, I will not be surprised to see (whether the plan is for or against) become a popular topic. Before expressing my opinion, I think it is necessary to take a look at the views of both sides. Should Free Music Download Be Banned? With the development of technology, more and more people are making use of the Internet and enjoying downloading all types of materials. Some are especially fond of downloading free music. They argue that free music downloads not only enrich our life, but also are good for the music industry because they help increase the popularity of music. However, from my point of view, it is not advisable to allow free music downloads. For one thing, they violate the intellectual property rights of musicians. For another, they have a negative impact on the sales of musical products such as CDs, which may do harm to the whole music industry. Without good returns, who would like to invest in the music industry? In order that the music industry can develop healthily, we had better ban free music downloads. Let’s all start to do so with ourselves. On TV ShowsNowadays, TV shows are very popular. TV programs like Super Girls and Dreams in China have attracted thousands of people to participate, and many more wait to watch them when they are on show. Why are so many people interested in such programs? Advocates say that these programs provide excellent opportunities for young people to express themselves and to show their specialty. They help improve the self-confidence and can add to their courage to face all kinds of challenges. However, some people criticize the programs, arguing that they are not only a waste of energy, money and time, but also a revelation of social vanity. In my opinion, we need not be too critical about such TV programs. If they can bring happiness to those who participate in them as well as to the audience, they are justifiably entitled to prosper. On Students Dealing in StocksWhen many people make a fortune in the stock market, a great number of university students follow their steps and get involved in dealing in stocks too. They deal in stocks in their free time, trying to earn some money and gain some experience in managing properties. SayMost people accept this understandingly. They say dealing in stocks provides the students an opportunity to combine what they have learned in school with practice. However, there are also people who take a negative view on this. They argue that dealing in stocks will not only take much of the students’ energy and time, but it will also make huge economic risks. When huge losses occur, they may lead to disastrous results. As for me, I think university students must be discouraged to deal in stocks, since campus life is not yet ready for the turbulent stock market. On Students Quitting SchoolMany college students have quit school in recent years. They do it for different reasons. Some students quit school because of their poor health. A serious disease or a traffic accident may have made it impossible for them to continue their schooling. Other students may be forced to do it because their family couldn’t afford the tuition. However, there are some students who quit school out of their own choice. Some embrace a good job offer and leave school. Others may find that they cannot afford to lose the good opportunity to start their own business, so they quit school to start their career just like Bill Gates.Whatever the reason, I think college students should think twice before deciding to quit school. After all, graduates are normally better prepared for their future than those who quit school. College education pays off in the long run.A Letter to the University PresidentDear Mr. President,I’m a sophomore majoring in law. I’m writing to make suggestions on improving the education quality of our university.First, I think there is still much room for improvement concerning our classroom education. Some teachers just recite textbooks and their courses are boring. It’s not very helpful for us. We need more interaction and communication in the classes, and we welcome more lively and practical courses.Secondly, we students need help to develop our initiative in our study. I hope our university can invite some famous people to deliver lectures to us on how to study. Finally, in order to get all students involved in our studies, I suggest some contests be held in the university. For example, the Department of Law can have legal knowledge contests.Thank you for reading my letter. I hope my suggestions will be seriously looked to.Yours sincerely,Li Ming。
