外研版高考英语选修6Module5《Cloning》word教案【美文阅读】The term cloning describes a number of different processes that can be used to produce genetically identical copies of a biological entity(实体;实际存在物). The copied material, which has the same genetic makeup as the original, is referred to as a clone.Researchers have cloned a wide range of biological materials, including genes,_cells,_tissues and even entire organisms, such as a sheep.Over the last 50 years, scientists have conducted cloning experiments in a wide range of animals using a variety of techniques. In 1979, researchers produced the first genetically identical mice by splitting mouse embryos in the test tube and then implanting the resulting embryos into the wombs of adult female mice. Shortly after that, researchers produced the first genetically identical cows, sheep and chickens by transferring(使转移;使调动) the nucleus of a cell taken from an early embryo into an egg that had been emptied of its nucleus. It was not until 1996, however, that researchers succeeded in cloning the first mammal from a mature (somatic) cell taken from an adult animal. After 276 attempts, Scottish researchers finally produced Dolly, the lamb from the udder(牛、羊等的)乳房) cell of a 6yearold she ep. Two years later, researchers in Japan cloned eight calves from a single cow, but only four survived.Besides cattle and sheep, other mammals that have been cloned from somatic cells include: cat, deer, dog, horse, mule, ox, rabbit and rat. In addition, a rhesus monkey has been cloned by embryo splitting.【诱思导学】1.What is cloning?________________________________________________________________________ 2.When was the mammal cloned?________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 1.The term cloning describes a number of different processes that can be used to produce genetically identical copies of a biological entity. Module 5 Cloning Section Ⅰ Introduction &Reading-Pre-readingAmong all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people. The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy aswell. In addition, human lifespan (寿命) can be prolonged.Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial (皇帝的) family being a good example, have hereditary (遗传的) diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it and ahealthy child will be born. Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep; therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology.Section_ⅠIntroduction_&_Reading_—_Prereading[原文呈现][读文清障]Frankenstein's Monster Part 1The story of FrankensteinFrankenstein is the name of a young scientist from Geneva, in Switzerland. Is it necessary or not? Let’s see how the kids think of this requirement.Lea Mouallem, Marymount High SchoolI believe that saying the Pledge of Allegiance is a way of reminding our country that on matter what happens, we are united. I don’t think our president wants us to go and join the army now, but he wants to tell us that we will be able to overcome the disaster (灾难) as a whole nation that is working together.Harry Chin, 15, Culver City High SchoolI am not for the Pledge of Allegiance and I am not against the Pledge of Allegiance because I just say it so many times that is loses meaning. I say it every day at school in the second period. It doesn’t mean anything any more.David Tran, 15, Warren High SchoolThe Pledge of Allegiance is another sign of c ountry. We should have some respect to it. In many school, we don’t say the Pledge every morning—we just stand up and let the National anthem ring through the silence. We said the Pledge of Allegiance on Sept.12.Danny Maryanor, 16, Santa Monica High SchoolI wonder why we were suddenly asked to recite pledge when many of us stopped after elementary school; and the pledge was recited before the play of “Ode to Joy” (欢乐颂) with recorders. This was not to express patriotism (爱国主义), or even to remember those who lost their lives on Sept.11.I feel I cannot support a nation that in this time of crisis looks outward for revenge (报复) instead of inward fo r peace. Perhaps we should think more about our problems.1.Saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag fist appeared in American schools .A. after Sept. 11, 2000B. before Sept. 11, 2001C. on Sept. 11, 2001D. after Sept. 11, 20012.
