Unit2 Language points
Teaching procedure:
Step 1 Greetings
Greet the class as usual.
Step 2 Revision and lead-in
Revise the passage by asking the Ss some questions. Let them retell the similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympics.
Step 3 Explain learning aims
Then tell the Ss we are going to learn some important words and expressions in the Reading Part. We need to master the meanings and how to use them.
Step 4 Cooperation discussion
T gives each group definite task of presentation and asks them to have a deep discussion

At the same time , the teacher walks in the classroom to give help or control if necessary.
Step 4 Presentation and comments
Get different Groups to write down what they have known about the words or expressions on the blackboards (3-5m’)
And then each group has a student to explain it.
While the class are going through all the language points, some other volunteers from other groups can add sth.more . And the teacher should give necessary comments to the active groups.

1. compete vi.
compete in 参加……比赛;
compete with/against 与……竞争;
compete for 为……争取……而比赛;
compete with 与……媲美;比得上
2. take part in
take an active part in
join/join in/attend/take part in/participate in
3. stand for
1) be the sign or short word for sth. 代表;代替;象征
The sign X stands for an unknown number.
What does “VIP”stand for?
2) endure 容忍;忍受
I’m not going to stand for that kind of behavior.
4. every four years
every + 基数词+ n (复数) every two days
every + 序数词+ n (单数) every second day
every + other + n (单数) every other day
every + few + n. (复数) every few days
5 admit vt.& vi. 容许;承认;接纳;容纳
be admitted as
be admitted to
admit sb. to/into
admit + n./doing(having done)/that-clause
admit sb./sth. to be
She admitted having broken the window/breaking the window/that she had broken the window. This hall can admit 800 people.
Study hard and you will be admitted to Beijing University.
6. as well 也;还,常放在句子末尾,作为副词短语使用
I’m going to London and my sister’s going as well.
He is a scientist, but he is a poet as well.
As well as 既……又;也;还,连接两个并列成分。
注意:连接两个并列主语时,谓语应与前面的主语保持人称和数的一致。
Many students as well as Tom were present at the meeting.
may/might as well 不妨;还是……的好
7. replace vt.取代;替换;代替
replace(= take the place of) sb./sth.
replace sth. with / by sth.
in place of = in one’s place
take one’s place = take the place of
He will replace the broken window with a new one.
The surprise on her face was replaced by joy.
8. in charge 主管;看管(P12,learning about language)
in one’s charge = in the charge of sb. 由某人管理
in charge of 负责;管理
take charge of

be charged with

1. I lived in what you call “Ancient Greece”.
what 引导的从句作介词in 的宾语,是个宾语从句。
相当于the place that you call “Ancient Greece”.
Finally we arrived in what is called “Tibet”.
The teacher was satisfied with what we had done.
They set up a school in what used to be a temple.
2. No other countries could join in, nor could slaves or wome n﹗
1)“nor/neither + 系动词/助动词/情态动词+ 另一个主语”用于否定陈述句之后,表示“也不”。
I have never been abroad, neither has he.
2)“so +系动词/助动词/情态动词+ 另一个主语”用于肯定陈述句之后,表示前句所说的情况也适合于另一个人或物。
You can ride a bike, so can I.
3) “so it is/was (the same) with + 另一个主语”主要用于以下情况:①上下文有两个分句
②上下文有两个不同谓语③上下文既有肯定也有否定。
--- Tom studies hard and is a good student.
--- So it is the same with Jack.
4)“so + 主语+ 系动词/助动词/情态动词”表示说话者赞同前句所提到的情况或事实。
--- She speaks French well.
--- So she does.

Record after teaching:。
