The Scarlet Letter
Not only is The Scarlet Letter is most successful representative work of Horthon,
American novelist, but also one of the most prestigious works in the field of American
romanticism novels.
The story was set Boston in the middle 17th century when people were brutally
persecuted by the authority both mentally and physically. The whole shadow and
cloudiness was embodied vividly under the writer’s depict, and it makes me retrospect
a lot after reading it.
Heist, a young, beautiful woman, suffered the adversity of marriage, whereas
unfortunately married to a Warlock who is handicapped and sickish and with whom
she has nothing in common. Subsequently, the man got lost during a voyage and
disappeared ever since, leaving endless pain and woe to the young woman. But
exactly during this tough time suddenly breaks in a man with whom she gradually fell
in love with, and has leaded a pleasant and unforgettable the time with each other. But
the satisfying time always fries quickly, it was not long before the poor young woman
was arrested in the name of adultery because the fact of pregnancy was exposed to
public.
According to doctrine at that time, she could be assoiled only under the condition of
making it clear the name of the man who was in relation of adultery, otherwise, she
would be bearing all the punishment of it. Dramatically, the man who was in charge of
the interrogation is her lover. For the sake of the beloved one, she would like to
swallow all the agony and insult, burying their love deeply in her heart instead of
making any subtle gloom to him.
Through the story, there were massive usages of symbolization. The roses were used
to represent beauty and kindness while prison symbolizes the death, and the love
between the two young people is symbolized by a gleam of light or a bird, all of these
images added luster to the work, making it absorbing and enchanting one. What’s
particular, in the end of this story, it turned out that the gravestone is written that
“there was a bloody A in the field of graveyard”, which is profound to be thought
about concerning to the social background.
The woman, strong-minded and perseverant to love, though convicted by the
governing authorities, remained pure and innocent, and consequently considered as
the embodiment of truthfulness, benevolence, and beauty whose undertaking is the
certification of the love under the oppression of feudal power together with the magisterium.
