THE POMEGRANATE TREE
When Hassan and Amir were at the tree, it was the only place that they could be seen as equals with each other.
The tree was a symbol for their friendship:
The tree was always there, even 20-30 years later. Although it had deteriorated, it was still there just like their friendship.
“There was a pomegranate tree near the entrance to the cemetery. One summer day, I used one of Ali‟s kitchen knives to carve our names in it: …Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul.‟ Those words made it for mal: the tree was ours” (Hosseini 27).
The bear that Baba fought
Throughout the book Amir can never live up to his father‟s expectations.
The bear is a symbol for Amir not following in his father‟s footsteps. His father is strong and tough just like the bear, but Amir can never live up to these standards his father has.
“Lore has it my father once wrestled a black bear…with his bare hands…I have imagined Baba’s wrestling match countless time, even dreamed about it. And in those dreams, I can never tell Baba from the bear”(Hosseini 12).
The Sheep
During Dhul-hijjah they have to slaughter a pure sheep for Eid-e-Qorban. This is similar to when Hassan, a “pure boy,” is raped by Assef.
The sheep is a symbol for the rape of Hassan because just like the sheep he was “slain”
because somebody wanted something from him.
“It was the look of the lamb…look of acceptance in the animal’s eyes”(Hosseini 76).
THE slingshot
•The slingshot is the weapon that both Hassan and Sohrab saved Amir with.
•The slingshot is a symbol of the devotion that Hassan has towards Amir.
•It is also a symbol of hope for the less powerful. A slingshot is not a big weapon, just like the Hazaras are not an important group in Afghanistan; however, they both defeated a bigger villain.
“The slingshot made a thwiiiiit sound when Sohrab released the cup. Then Assef was screaming”(Hosseini 291).
The Kite
The kite is a symbol for Hassan‟s undying loyalty to Amir, even in the face of danger, he held onto it.
The blue kite is a constant reminder to Amir of the night in the alley that he is forever tied to.
No matter what Amir does for the next 20 years of his life he is constantly
reminded of what he saw that night in the alley. “I knew all about regret” (Hosseini 180).。
