新概念英语第三册(共60课Lesson1 A puma at largePumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar. The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered(adj. The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging to bushes. Several people complained of 'cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from ? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.

Lesson 41 - A very dear catIn this lesson, we are introduced to a heartwarming story about a cat and the special bond it shares with its owner. Through the narrative, we learn about the cat's loyalty, intelligence, and how it becomes an invaluable part of the family. Let us delve into the story of the very dear cat.The story takes place in a small village where a lady named Mrs. James owns a cat named Tiddles. Tiddles is no ordinary cat; he is exceptionally intelligent and devoted to his owner. Mrs. James had raised Tiddles since he was a kitten and had grown fond of his affectionate nature. One day, Mrs. James falls ill and is confined to her bed for several weeks. During this time, Tiddles becomes her constant companion, never leaving her side. He is attuned to her needs and provides her with comfort and solace during her illness. This display of loyalty and understanding is truly remarkable.Tiddles' intelligence is further revealed when Mrs. James's daughter, Betty, gives birth to a son. Mrs. James insists on having the baby baptized in their home. However, they encounter a dilemma as they lack a basin large enough for the ceremony. Remarkably, Tiddles solves the problem by bringing a deep plate filled with water from the kitchen. This unexpected act demonstrates Tiddles' ability to think and solve problems, leaving the family astounded. As time passes, Tiddles' bond with the family deepens, and he becomes an integral part of their lives. He shows his affection in various ways, suchas sitting on Mr. James' shoulder during dinner or sleeping at the foot of Mrs. James' bed every night. Tiddles' dedication and love brighten the family's days and provide them with a sense of comfort and companionship.Tragically, one evening, Tiddles is run over by a car. The family is devastated by the loss, and Mrs. James is particularly heartbroken. She decides to bury Tiddles in the garden and plants flowers over his grave as a way to remember him.In the end, the story beautifully captures the emotional connection between humans and their pets. Illusions of pastoral peaceThe quiet life of the country has never appealed to me. City born and city bred. appeal[ə'pil]vi. appeal的基本意思是强烈的请求他人注意某事或希望他人认真考虑自己的请求,即“呼吁”“恳求”呼吁;有吸引力;求助;诉请;appeal to sb.(吸引某人)appeal to the court (向法院上诉),appeal to history (弓|证历史),appeal to the public (向大众呼吁),appeal to patriotism (引起爱国心),appeal to force (求助于武力)breed[brid]vi.
I have always regarded the country as something you look at through a train window, or something you occasional visit during the weekend.regard[rɪ'ɡɑrd]n. 注意,注重;注视regard sth. as sth.
Most of my friends live in the city, yet they always go into raptures at the mere mention of the country.rapture['ræptʃɚ]n. 提及,说起at the mere mention of sth.
效果很好!)The quiet life of the country has never appealed to me(第一句清楚的称述自己的观点,但是没有用模版式的agree or disagree或者I like, I do not like之类的). City born and city bred(经典句子,作文的highlight,在别的地方同样可以移植类似的结构), I have always regarded(避免了使用think这样的词汇,以后大家要写t hink的时候,就用regard as) the country as something you look at through a tra in window(细节的具象化,ETS不喜欢那些抽象的大道理却偏好这些很具体的小细节,这也就是为什么所有的Topic里边都有一个specific 的原因了), or somethi ng you occasionally(副词的使用充分的表达作者的感情和限定成分,同时避免了s ometimes这种相对常见的使用) visit during the weekend. Most of my friends l ive in the city, yet they always go into raptures at the mere mention of the c ountry(超强的句子!go into rapture,这里用一个很动感的短语表现了friend的狂喜,同时使用了always和mere两个词构成鲜明的对比,表达很生动!). Though they e xtol the virtues(赞美的高级说法,用一个3词的短语替代一个干瘪的praise,不仅在字数上多了,而且表达更好)of the peaceful life, only one of hem has ever gon e to live in the country and he was back in town within(within虽然不是什么高级的东西,但是大家常常忘记用,或者根本没有用within的意识) six months. E ven he still lives under the illusion(under the illusion活在幻想之下,这个短语本身就很好,同时,大家在写作时也可以用:a multitude of people live under the illu sion that A is superior to B, however, from my perspective…)that country lif e is somehowsuperior to town life(somehow也是好词!当你要说有的人荒谬的观点时,就可以说:why some deem A as the optimal choice and somehow super ior to B is really beyond me.). He is forever talking(be forever doing,当强调一个动作的时候,这是很好的,be doing比一个单一的do来的强烈得多) about the friendly people, the clean atmosphere(atmosphere的使用避免的用俗了的enviro nment), the closeness to nature and the gentle pace(gentle pace, gentle完美的形容了乡村生活,准确而生动的形容词使用) of living. Nothing can be compared (又学到了,无与伦比的说法,在表达自己肯定的观点的时候可以使用), he maintai ns, with the first cockcrow, the twittering of birds at dawn, the sight of the ri sing sun glinting on the trees and pastures. This idyllic pastoral scene is only part of the picture(only part of the picture,仅仅是问题的一个方面,这个短语是很常用的!).My friend fails to mention(这里用fail to do替代了does not do,因为does not do实在太低级了,而fail to do则是好很多) the long and friendless (漂亮的使用)winter evenings in front of the TV(又是一个具体的细节,很符合ETS的口味)-- virtually (在写作中actually这个概念是很容易出现了,这里使用了virtually替换,避免了撞车)the only form(看来唯一的方式不仅仅只是the only way, 这里又用了一个替换,避免了过于普遍的用词) of entertainment. He says nothing(ATTENTION:作者一直没有用does not,却两次表达了否定,say nothing肯定比does not say来得好)about the poor selection of goods in the shops, or about those unfortunate people who have to travel from the country to the city every day to get to work. Why people are prepared to tolerate a four-hour jou rney each day for the dubious privilege of living in the country is beyond me (注意这里的why…beyond me这种用法,在你要反驳一种观点的时候是很有用的). They could be saved so much misery and expense if theychose to live in th e city where they rightly belong(其实这是一个作文结尾的不错模版,可以避免单一乏味的重复).If you can do without(do without,把… If you can do without the dubious merits of A, you wi ll swiftly find B…)the few pastoral pleasures of the coun try, you will find the city can provide you with the best that life can offer. Y ou never have to travel miles to see your friends. They invariably(invariably是我强烈推荐的always的替换,这个词是人家很常用的) lie nearby and are always available for an informal chat or an evening's entertainment. Some of my acq uaintances(避免了friends的重复)in the country come up to town once or twic e a year(具体的次数其实就是details,大家记住o nce or twice绝对比several time s好很多,这样才可以体现出你文章的specific,不要认为这些小的地方可以忽视,其实在文章中注意细节,是可以make a difference的!) to visit the theatre as a s pecial treat(特殊待遇). For them this is a major operation which involves(invol ve这个词大家都知道,却不常用) considerable(elaborate也不错)planning. As the play draws to its close(draw to its close,接近的意思,避免了过于大众的come t o the end), they wonder(wonder也是一个建议多用的词汇)whether they will e ver catch that last train home. The city dweller never experiences(experience, u ndergo和suffer两个词汇最好是有机会就用,没有机会创造机会用,ATTENTION: undergo, suffer是经历不好的事)anxieties of this sort(没有出现kind). The lates t exhibitions, films, or plays are only a short bus ride away(a short bus ride a way,用具体的描写替代了nearby这个概念,这是大家应该学习的,以后形容近就可以说:A is only a couple of minutes walk away). Shopping, too, is always a pl easure. There is so much variety that you never have to make do with(make d o with,相信这是大家几乎没有听说过的用法,就是凑合着用的意思,和有用的用法,你可以写:Viathe help of B, one will never have to make do with XXX) seco nd best. Country people run wild(run wild是使用避免了crazily这个干瘪的词,如果你能够用frantically当然也很好)when they go shopping in the city and stagger home loaded with as many of the exotic items as they can carry(OMG,这个句子很具体的写出了乡村人的不幸,作者用了stagger蹒跚,loaded with装载,as many as they can多, exotic ite ms外来物品,4个概念组成了一幅农民进城的生动画面,阅卷人就喜欢这样的有d etails)句子,以后大家想要形象的描写一个东西就可以按照这个句子的模式来些). Nor is the c ity without its moments of beauty(双重否定表肯定,用这样的句子就可以显示出你的语言功底,同时要提醒的是moments of xxx这个用法是要一有机会就用的,比如你先说B有什么不好,再说A很好,你就说Nor is A without its moments of XXX). There is something comforting about the warm glow shed by advertisements on cold wet winter nights. Few things could be more impressive than th e peace that descends on deserted city streets at weekends when the thousands that travel to work every day are tucked away in their homes in the country (这个句子你很可能一掠而过,但是这里的结构同样是值得学习的: Few things co uld be more impressive than A其实就是A is more impressive than many thing s,但是这里一个小小的替换就避免了简单的称述句,这是那些句子很单一的同学们应该好好学习的). It has always been a mystery to me who city dwellers, w ho appreciate all these things, obstinately pretend that they would prefer to liv e in the country(漂亮的收尾,没有反对的词汇,却表示出了反对的意思,这也是结尾的一个很好的模版).。

Lesson41 Illusions of Pastoral peaceThe quiet life of the country has never appealed to me. City born and city bred, I have always regarded the country as something you look at through a train window, or something you occasionally visit during the week-end. Most of my friends live in the city, yet they always go into raptures at the mere mention of the country. Though they extol the virtues of the peaceful life, only one of them has ever gone to live in the country and he was back in town within six months. Evenhe still lives under the illusion that country life is somehow superior to town life. He is forever talking about the friendly people, the clean atmosphere, the closeness to nature and the gentle pace of living. Nothing can be compared, he maintains, with the first cock crow, the twittering of birds at dawn, the sight of the rising sun glinting on the trees and pastures. This idyllic pastoral scene isonly part of the picture. My friend fails to mention the long and friendless winter evenings which are interrupted only by an occasional visit to the local cinema-virtually the only form of entertainment. He says nothing about the poor selection of goods in the shops, or about those unfortunate people who have to travel from the country to the city every day to get to work. Why people are prepared to tolerate a four hour journey each day for the dubious privilege of living in the country is beyond my ken. They could be saved so much misery and expense if they chose to live in the city where they rightly belong. If you can do without the few pastoral pleasures of the country, you will find the city can provide you with the best that life can offer. You never have to travel miles to see your friends. They invariably live nearby and are always available for an informal chat or an evening's entertainment. Some of my acquaintances in the country come up to town once or twice a year to visit the theatre as a special treat. For them this is a major operation which involves considerable planning. As the play draws to its close, they wonder whether they will ever catch that last train home. The city dweller never experiences anxieties of this sort. The latest exhibitions, films, or plays are only a short bus ride away. Shopping, too, is always a pleasure. There is so much variety that you never have to make do with second best. Country people run wild when they go shopping in the city and stagger home loaded with as many of the necessities of life as they can carry. Nor is the city without its moments of beauty. There is something comforting about the warm glow shed by advertisements on cold wet winter nights. Few things could be more impressive than the peace that descends on deserted city streets at week-ends when the thousands that travel to work everyday are tucked a way in their homes in the country. It has always been a mystery to me why city dwellers, who appreciate all these things, obstinately pretend that they would prefer to live in the country.
Lesson42 Modern CavemenCave exploration, or potholing, as it has come to be known, is a relatively new sport. Perhaps it is the desire for solitude or the chance of making an unexpected discovery that lures men down to the depths of the earth. It is impossible to give a satisfactory explanation for a pot-holer's motives. For him, caves have the same peculiar fascination which high mountains have for the climber. They arouse instincts which can only be dimly understood. Exploring really deep caves is not a task for the Sunday afternoon rambler. Such undertakings require the precise planning and foresight of military operations. It can take as long as eight days to rig up rope ladders and to establish supply bases before a descent can be made into a very deep cave. Precautions of this sort are necessary, for it is impossible to foretell the exact nature of the difficulties which will confront the potholer. The deepest known cave in the world is the Gouffre Berger near Grenoble. It extends to a depth of 3723 feet. This immense chasm has been formed by an underground stream which has tunnelled a course through a flaw in the rocks. The entrance to the cave is on a plateau in the Dauphine Alps. As it is only six feet across, it is barely noticeable. The cave might never have been discovered had not the entrance been spotted by the distinguished French potholer, Berger. Since its discovery, it has become a sort of potholers' Everest. Though a number of descents have been made, much of it still remains to be explored.A team of potholers recently went down the Gouffre Berger. After entering the narrow gap on the plateau, they climbed down the steep sides of the cave until they came to a narrow corridor. They had to edge their way along this, sometimes wading across shallow streams, or swimming across deep pools. Suddenly they came to a waterfall which dropped into an underground lake at the bottom of the cave. They plunged into the lake, and after loading their gear on an inflatable rubber dinghy, let the current carry them to the other side. To protect themselves from the icy water, they had to wear special rubber suits. At the far end of the lake, they came to huge piles of rubble which had been washed up by the water. In this part of the cave, they could hear an insistent booming sound which they found was caused by a small water-spout shooting down into a pool from the roof of the cave. Squeezing through a cleft in the rocks, the potholers arrived at an enormous cavern, the size of a huge concert hall. After switching on powerful arc lights, they saw great stalagmites—some of them over forty feet high--rising up like tree-trunks to meet the stalactites suspended from the roof. Round about, piles of lime-stone glistened in allthe colours of the rainbow. In the eerie silence of the cavern, the only sound that could be heard was made by water which dripped continuously from the high dome above them.
