unveiled that the assembling structures less than one molecular layer was optimally driven by maximization of the dimeric hydrogen bonds.Trimesic acid (TMA)has three carboxyl groups (forming an angle of 120°with respect to each other)in the molecular plane of the benzyl core (Figure 1a).The carboxyl groups can form intermolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs)in either dimeric (Figure 1b)or trimeric (Figure 1c)form.TMA normally assembles into two typical porous networks,the “chicken wire”(Figure 2A and a)and the “flower”(Figure 2B and b)structures.1,2It can assemble at various substrates such as graphite,1-5Au,6-10Cu,11and Au/Si,12in liquid 2-9or ultrahigh vacuum (UHV)1,11,12environments.It can also co-assemble with other molecules to form different patterns.5,13,14Its carboxyl groups can deprotonate to coordinate metal atoms such as Cu 11,15and Fe.16,17Even more importantly,TMA can form various host -guest systems such as hydrogen-bonded cation -anion complexes with many amino acids.18Its flexible adaptability at different surfaces and abundant coordination capability make it one of the most extensively studied assembling molecules that form ordered two-dimensional monomolecular porous networks.Here we report that TMA actually forms much more assembling structures than previously reported and gives a unified model describing the whole family of its assembling structures.All experiments were carried out with a UHV system at a base pressure <6×10-11mbar.The Au(111)substrate was cleaned by successive cycles of Ar +ion sputtering and annealing at 953K.Prior to use,the TMA powder (Acros,98%in purity)was outgassed for 72h at 453K in high purity N 2.After heating overnight in UHV at 403K,TMA was then slowly deposited onto the Au(111)-(22× 3)substrate by sublimation from a Knudsen cell at 383K,during which the Au substrate was kept at room temperature (RT).All scanning tunneling microscopy(STM)images were collected at RT in constant-current mode using a Pt/Ir tip.The STM scanner was calibrated with Si(111)-(7×7).Above 0.30ML (1ML )1.34×1014TMA molecules/cm 2),TMA started to assemble into the chicken-wire structure on Au(111)-(22× 3)under UHV conditions.Its STM image and rhombus unit cell model are given in Figure 2A and a,respectively.Its half unit cell,an equilateral triangle,contains one TMA molecule in one row (Figure 3a).We term it as H TMA -1where H TMA stands for the hexagonal porous TMA network and the subscript number 1represents one row of the TMA molecule in the half unit cell.In this structure,all TMA molecules are interconnected to each other via dimeric HBs.An increase of the TMA coverage led to the appearance of the flower structure (Figure 2B and b),which we here denoted as H TMA -2because its half unit cell contains three TMA molecules in two rows (Figure 2b).The three TMA molecules inside its half unit cell are bonded by trimeric HBs,and all half unit cells are stitched to each other via dimeric HBs.Apparently,the H TMA -2structure can be envisioned as transformed from the H TMA -1structure by adding two more TMA molecules (one row)into its half unit cell.Further increase of the TMA coverage led to a novel hexagonal porous structure (Figure 2C).Its half unit cell contains six TMA molecules in three rows (Figure 2c).Hence,it is named H TMA -3.Continuous increase of the coverage resulted in a series of novel assembling structures:H TMA -4(Figure 2D and d),H TMA -5(Figure 2E and e),H TMA -6(Figure 2F and f),H TMA -7(Figure 2G and g)and H TMA -8(Figure 2H and h).Ultimately,a close-packed structure (Figure 2I and i,we name it as H TMA -∞because the half unit cell of the network would approach infinity)was produced at 1.0ML.Above 1.0ML appeared multilayered assemblies.In the bound together by trimeric HBs.This structure was predicted previously,but hardly observed.2,7A new unit cell,also a rhombus,can be identified for this close-packed structure.This new unit cell is ∼0.93nm in size and contains only one TMA molecule (Figure 2i).All H TMA -n (n )1,2,3,...,8)structures observed in this study had a rhombus unit cell (Figure 2a -h).Periodic arrange-ments of each unit cell can generate the hexagonal porous networks (Supporting Information).The pore diameter in all networks (Table 1)was measured to be ∼1.1nm,in good agreement with previous result,1but the interpore distance changed gradually from 1.6nm (Figure 2a)to 8.2nm (Figure 2h)at a step size of ∼0.93nm,being equal to the unit cell length of the H TMA -∞structure.This is rational because the transformation from H TMA -(n -1)to H TMA -n is actually the result of one more row of the TMA molecules added in the half unit cell of the H TMA -(n -1)structure.Accordingly,the interpore distance of the H TMA -n structure,d n ,can be described bywhere p )0.93nm,the unit cell length of the H TMA -∞structure,and q )1.65nm,the unit cell length of the H TMA -1structure.n is the number of TMA rows in the half unit cell.Therefore,the experimentally observed surface molecular density of the H TMA -n structure,σn ,can then be precisely written asAll measured interpore distances and the calculated ones were in excellent agreement (see Table 1),indicating that the interpore distance can be tuned stepwise over the nanometer range (1.6-8.2nm).According to the data for our observed structures (Table 1),it is obvious that the larger the n value,the denser the surface molecular density.As such,it is expected that any intermediate assembling structure in between the two extremes,H TMA -1and H TMA -∞,can be fabricated by careful control of the TMA coverage and the whole family of the assembling structures can therefore be described mathematically.In all assemblies,there are only two types of HBs,dimeric and/or trimeric ones.The bond length in a dimer is slightly shorter than that in a trimer.1Experimentally,the H TMA -1structure always appeared first.Both facts indicate that the dimeric HB is lower in energy than the trimeric one,and hence is more stable.Supposing that (1)all TMA molecules equally interact with the Au substrate and (2)the amount of irregular molecular connections at the domain boundaries are neglectable,we can write down the coverage,θn ,for the H TMA -n structure asBecause the molecular layer at surface may consist of various assembling structures,the total coverage,θ,can then be written aswhere n is the area occupancy (in percentage)of the H TMA -nstructure in all possible assembling structures.We denote the blank surface as the H TMA -0structure for the sake of con-sistency.Consequently,the number of the dimeric hydrogen bonds per unit area,N d ,iswhere σ∞)2 3/(3p 2)≈1.34×1014TMA molecules/cm 2,the molecular density of the close-packed H TMA -∞structure.If N d in eq 5is maximized,then the energy of the network is then minimized and,hence,the system is optimized.The calculated results are shown in Figure 3.It is obvious that at a given coverage an optimized TMA assembly should only be composed of two assembling structures,that is,the H TMA -n and H TMA -(n +1)structures.For Example,in regime I (0<θ<0.63)in Figure 3only the H TMA -1structure -2)+H TMA -(n -1)combination to the H TMA -n +H TMA -(n +1)combination becomes narrower as n increases.Therefore,the larger the TMA coverage,the more sensitive the assembling structure to the coverage change.As a result,with the increase of n ,two or more combinations could be observed at the surface due to local coverage fluctuation.Nonetheless,the observed assembling H TMA -n (n <8)structures in large areas were fairly stable at RT and stretched out across atomic steps without obvious structural deformation (see the Supporting Information).To summarize,we have shown that the self-assembly of trimesic acid on Au(111)-(22× 3)could be tuned by tweaking its surface coverage,leading to the variation of its interpore distance from 1.6to 8.2nm or even larger at a step size of ∼0.93nm while its pore size remained 1.1nm,and the hexagonal assembly pattern stayed.All observed assembling structures could be described by a unified model in whichallFigure 2.Coverage-induced evolution of TMA
