The Multidisciplinary Test Engineer – Is That a Future Necessity?
Alon Linetzki, Principal Consultant & Test Expert, Best-TestAbstract Why do we face such increasing demands on the knowledge and high skills of test engineers? Where is this trend going? How should we be prepared for it? These are questions many test managers are asking themselves while hiring new test engineers, and taking care of their team's professional development looking on future challenges. We are facing many events in the business arena that influence development of new products, among them the evolving of new and integrated technologies in Mobility, Cloud, Big-Data, Cyber and new development models (Agile) alongside with them. All of these are influencing the roles and responsibilities of the future test engineer. In the presentation I would like to discuss the Multidisciplinary aspects in the knowledge and skills of the test engineer and from which challenges they are derived from. Key questions that are in the core of our discussion: What are the areas in which test engineers should evolve in? Which test engineers should we look for or develop facing future challenges? Multidisciplinary people can face multi-subjects and inter-subjects better, Contribution of such people skills to the overall time to market and ROI Areas of expertise, multidisciplinary people know such as: testing methodology, testing tools, but also development languages, development tools/environments, supporting tools and products (DBs, Utilities, etc'). Why should we also be knowledgeable in product management definition, product requirements definition, and maintenance aspects? What about non-analytical topics like: marketing, sales, negotiation, presentation, communication - all human area skills and know-how, which we do not train our people enough in – even though every manager today will tell you that these affect the quality of their product, TTM, and implementation vastly How to track the knowledge and skills evolvement in our people? – Excel Tool will be provided. I will analyze the need for a change in our focus as professionals, training the next generation of test engineers, present topics in which we can see evolvement of the skills for our engineers in future years, and connect these skills to the new roles and responsibilities presented to us already, but not adopted yet.
