Now let us begin a journey to the spectacular three gorges.Qutang gorgeThe first gorge of the three gorges is called Qutang Gorge, which is also named the Kui Gorge. The Yangtze River suddenly narrows here and is only 100 meters wide in one place. There is Kui Gate(the entrance to the Qutang Gorge) at the Gorge;people said that the world's most majestic place is Kui Gate. The Qutang Gorge is only 8 km long and is the mostdangerous of the Three Gorges. The current velocity of the river here is 8 meters per second, 20 kilometers per hour. Fengjie has been the political, military, economic and cultural center of East Sichuan. Here are the first territories of the ancient Ba and Yong Kingdoms. Yufu County was established here some 2,300 years ago during the Zhou Dynasty, making it one of the first counties established in China. In 222 Liu Bei retreated from Yiling ( now Yichang) to Baidicheng, where he renarued Yufu County as Yongan County. In the 32nd year of the Tang Emperor Zhenguan's reign (649 A.D.)， the emperor in order to commend Zhuge Liang for his patriotism and loyalty, gave this place its current name¨Fengjie“. It is said the warlord Gongsun Shu built it in order to resist Eastern Han Dynasty Emperor Guangwu Liu Xiu. Baidicheng is surrounded on three sides by water and on one side by a steep hill. It is the best place to see Qutang Gorge. A winding trail passes through the hill gate, and the color statues of Li Bei, Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are displayed in the temple. The Qutang Gorge gap originally had a huge reef in the middle of the Yangtze River by Baidicheng, which was called the Yanyu heap. Navigating this part of the gorge was especially difficult, as the slightest deviation from course could cause the boat to run over the reef am sink. Some 208 burial graves were found and more than l,200 pieces of precious relics were unearthed. The history of these graves and objects stretches back about five thousand years and provide an invaluable record of the social and economic development of upper reaches of the Yangtze River during Neolithic period.Wu GorgeWell, now we are at Wu Gorge. It is known as the Grand Canyon Gorge, for both its relatively along length and beautiful tranquil scenery. During the boat trip, the mountains sometimes suddenly appear and block your view. And the winding river and its beautiful scenery constantly, make you as if you were in a coiling gallery.Wushan Ancient CityWushan ancient city is located in the mouth of Daning river in the Wu Gorge and has a long history. As early as the Qin and Han dynasties, Wushan County was named Wu County, and this name was permanently adopted from Sui Dynasty onward. It is said that in ancient Yao Shun period, there is a royal doctor called Wu who died here, afterward this place was named wushan. There was another saying: the Nanling Hill faced wushan and took a shape like the Chinese character “巫” ( pinyin:wu ) , SO it got The name Wushan( Wu Hill)。
