rather than 意为"而不是",在句子中常用于平行结构中,即前后的词性、句子成分要相同。如:
I think I’ll have a cold drink rather than hot water.
I’d prefer to go in summer rather than in winter.
I decided to write rather than (to) telephone.

此外,还用注意以下结构:
1) prefer to do ... rather than do ... 如:
I prefer to get up early rather than go to school without breakfast.
2) would do ... rather than do 或would rather do sth. than do ... 如:
I would die rather than disgrace myself.
Harry would rather paint the house on his own than have the painter do it.

make up 在课文中意为"编造"。如:
He made up some excuses for his being late.

make up的其它含义:
1) 补上(失去的东西),作出补偿。如:
Can I leave early this afternoon and make up the time tomorrow?
2) 化装,打扮。如:
Her mother made herself up carefully in the morning.
3) make up for sth(用其他的方式)弥补,使其平衡。如:
Do you think her beauty could make up for her stupidity?
4) 铺床,临时搭床(为特殊需要而准备的)。如:
They made up a bed for the unexpected guest.

【名师点拨】
此句中的get in touch with 意思为"与……取得联系"。如:
I’ll try to get in touch with Tom. Do you have his number?
此短语是强调动作的,不能和表示一段时间的状语连用。如不能说:How long
have you got in touch with him? 但可以用be / keep in touch with ... 来表示动作的延续。如:
Are you still in touch with your friends from college?
【知识拓展】
be / keep in touch with sth 还可表示"了解某课题或领域的情况"。如:
It is important to keep in touch with the latest research.
注意以下几个短语:be out of touch with sb 失去联系be out of touch with sth
