China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to beriding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite istrue. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapestway to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.

It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even onsidewalks(⼈⾏道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.

Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied(陪伴) my greatbuy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.

My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets camerunning swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully. Crossing the streets was thebiggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, socrossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.

I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair waswonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.

It was Mother’s Day morning last year and I was doing my shopping at our local supermarket with my five-year-old son,Tenyson. As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and hadhit her head on the concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassedand clearly in shock.

Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum,it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.”

At the front of the supermarket, a charity(慈善) group had set up a stand selling cooked sausages and flowers to raisefunds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It will make her feel better,” he said. I was amazed that he’dcome up with this sweet idea. By now paramedics(急救⼈员) had arrived, and were attending to the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my sonbecame intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared to go up to her.

Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to giveher this flower to make her feel better.”

At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. Happy Mother’s Day toyou.”
