The Aims of Education: some areas of controversy教育的目的薛莲重庆工商大学国际合作与交流处4000671. IntroductionEducation is a highly complicated process which is connected with families, schools and society throughout one‟s whole life. Harry Chester‟s Schools for Childr en and Institutes for Adults (1860) says, … Education is the development and training of the human being in all his capacities, spiritual, intellectual and physical; and in National Education we ought to have no less grand an object than to develop to the greatest possible extent, and to direct to the best possible aims, the spiritual, intellectual, and physical capacities of all the individuals who compose the nation…‟ (Dyson and Lovelock, 1975:161).So should there be any aim of Education? In Peters‟ view, … there is no end beyond education itself.‟(Peters, 1973:27) What we could achieve from the debate on“ aims of education”? Sidney Hook raised questions,… Can we educate for “ intellect” or “ mind” in a desirable way without educating for much else? Can we educate “ the whole man” without educating a certain kind of man whose integral wholeness will differ from that of his neighbour?‟(Hook, 1963:26) We can see that to identify“ intrinsic”and “ extrinsic” aims is not the key point, while how to realize the se … good‟ aims in our educational pratice is more worthwhile thinking. In this article, I will bring some controversies on“ aims of education” together and try to drag out some of my own ideas. There will be six parts altogether: the first part is Introduction; second is Definition of Terms; t h e n “Should there be” aims of education‟”; following serious debate on“ intrinsic aims” or “ extrinsic aims”; then my main concern about “ how the aims affect education”; the last part is Conclusion.2. Definitions of Terms… If we do not know precisely the meaning of the words we use, we cannot discuss anything profitably. Most of the futile arguments on which we all waste time are largely due to the fact that we each have our own vague meanings for the words we use and assume that our opponents are using them in the same senses. If we defined our terms to start with, we could have far more profitable discussions.‟(Crossman, 1963) As Crossman thinks, there should be clear definitions of the terms we use in our discussions. Following are different definitions of “ aim”,“ education”, “ educated”, which is the original problem of the debate on “ aims of education”.What I found in Longman are: AIM is what you are hoping to achieve by a plan, action, or activity (it s eems to be the“ end” of some organized activities); EDUCATION is a. the process by which your mind develops through learning at a school, college, or university, b. the knowledge and skills that you gain from being taught, c. the general area of work or study connected with teaching ( these definitions are simply connected with schooling); EDUCATED is a. intelligent because you have been taught or trained somewhere, b. having a high standard of judgement about art, literature… ( these definitions are equal to something like “ skillful”,“ specific in some field”. Otherwise, an … intelligent‟ person is not always… educated‟.) Meanwhile, there are some general ideas about the definitions in “ aims of education”: AIM is to initiate man into a reflective form of life and realize self-improvement; EDUCA TION is teaching, training of the mind and character; EDUCA TED is knowledgeable, capable, not narrowly specialized and not only skilled.3. Should there be“ Aims of Education”?In Aristotle‟s view,… every art and eve ry inquiry, and similarly every action and pursuit, is thought to aim at some good; and for this reason the good has rightly been declared to be that at which all things aim.‟ (Aristotle, 1941) Before we discuss what are the aims of education, we have to solve the question: are there any aims of education? Dewey says,… it is nonsense to talk about the aim of education--- or any other undertaking--- where conditions do not permit of foresight of results, and do not stimulate a person to look ahead to see what the outcome of a given activity is to be.‟(Dewey, 1916:119)However, White thinks, … It may seem selfevident that educators need aims. Educating is surely an intentional, purposeful enterprise--- how could it be otherwise?‟ (White, 1982:6) From his words, we could conclude that the … aims‟ are aims of educators, not aims of education. Also, Peters asks… Must an educator have an aim?‟ (Peters, 1959) The answer would be… What was taught was taught on authority, and the pupils were expected to accept it on a uthority.‟ (Kilpatrick, 1937:28) Here, I want to ask,… is the authority the educator?‟ Then,… In any case such“ aims” limit intelligence;…They limit intelligence because, given readymade, they must be imposed by some authority external to intelligence, leaving to the latter nothing but a mechanical choice of means.‟(Dewey, 1916:122)4. Should Education Aims be Intrinsic or Extrinsic?… It may seem obvious to some that one can not say what the aims of education should be until one has worked out what education itself is.‟ (White, 1982) Again, what is“ education”?… A generalized view of education, consistent with the assumption that … education‟ was derived from the Latin… e d u c e r e ‟, m e a n i n g … t o l e a d o u t ‟,developed.‟ (Hirst and Peters, 1970:30) Following, they concluded, … The aim of education was thought of as … growth‟ or the development of individual potentialities.‟ … The development of individual potentialities‟ would be replaced by… the cultivation of instincts‟.(Russell, 1926:125)Dewey holds the … intrinsic‟ view, … An educational aim must be founded upon the intrinsic activities and needs (including original instincts and acquired habits) of the given individual to be educated.‟ (Dewey, 1916:126)Why “ an educational aim must be f ounded upon the intrinsic activities and needs”? Because… to educate is to help the development or growth of mind… Educating… would seem to be concerned with the development of such mental qualities which constitute the life of the mind.‟(Pring, 1976:7) S o Dewey claimed,… Education for him has no aims outside itself: growth is an intrinsic aim.‟ (Dewey, 1916:50)However, Roussell would suggest teachers:… Your greatest care ought to be to keep away from your pupil‟s mind all notions of social relations which are not within his reach. But when the chain of knowledge forces you to show him the mutual dependence of men, instead of showing it to him from the moral side, turn all his attention at first towards industry and mechanical arts which make men useful to one another.‟ (Roussell, 1911:185) He is keeping rejecting the social influence. What‟s more,… education is the means used by society… to ensure that new generations will maintain it both practically and ideologically.‟ (Ashton et al, 1975:11) To some degree, it is true.… For in that case, some portions of the whole social group will find their aims determined by an external dictation, their aims will not arise from the free growth of their own experience, and their nominal aims will be means to more ulterior ends of others rather than truly their own.‟(Dewey, 1916:117) However, we should consider whether such a view is too extreme. After all, education is not created for the authority originally.5. How do “ Aims of Education” Affect Education?Although there are different definitions of “ aims”, “ education” and “ educated”, the debate onwhether there should be “ aims of education”, and the fight between“ intrinsic aims” and “ extrinsic aims”, all the people are showing serious concern about“ education”. It is easy to see that quarrel is not their “ aim”, and that what interests them is the practice in education. … To have a mind to do a thing is to foresee a future possibility; it is to have a plan for its accomplishment; it is to note the means which make the plan capable of execution and the obstructions in the way, ---or, if it is really a mind to do the thing and not a vague aspiration--- it is to have a plan which takes account of resources and difficulties.‟ (Dewey, 1916:120)6. ConclusionWhat is an aim? Dewey‟ s answer is … an aim implies an orderly and ordered activity, one in which the order consists in the progressive completing of a process.‟ (Dewey, 1916) In his opinion, education is not a specific activity, but… an abstract process‟ (Dewey, 1916). Therefore,it is not necessary to talk about “ aims of education”, and it is … nonsense‟. (Dewey, 1916) However, Wilson would say, … aims are general statements that provide direction or intent to educational action.‟(Wilson, 2002) Due to different de finitions of terms, the question of “ should there be aims of education” couldn‟t be solved. Because everyone uses his own measure, the targets won‟t meet together.Furthermore, people arouse hot discussion on“ intrinsic or extrinsic” issue. What we should spend more time and energy is the education process itself.… If the essence of human nature is in the life of meaning, then the proper aim of education is to promote the growth of meaning. To fulfil this aim, the educator needs to understand the kinds of meaning that have proven effective in the development of civilization and to construct the curriculum of studies on the basis of these meanings.‟(Bailey, 1984:84)。
