To Dominate the OceanBritain, as a modern and develop country with a long history, just has an alternative name, Empire that sun never set. It means when the sun goes down in some territories of Britain, the sun is still shining in some other territories of it. What a domineering speech and what a great empire! All of these owe to its greatly superior naval strength which offers protection for the development of maritime trade and the establishment of colonies.British Empire’s history is full of fire and blood. It sets up three signposts: start by pirate, open a way by wars and develop by the industrial revolution. In fact, Spain and Holland expanded naval forces and began their colonization initially. And Britain just began to participate in the colonization and plundering until the end of the sixteenth century. But once as it tasted some sweetness, the British authorities, represented by Queen Elizabeth, decided to develop marine trade and strengthened the naval power. As an island country, Britain has great talents in navigation. In 1580, Captain Drake finished the first around-the-world voyage of Britain and brought back 163 thousands pound for the Queen Elizabeth and he was knighted as an incentive. In that time, marine trade and exploration on the sea was inseparable from piracy. The merchant ships were also the warships. In1587, Captain Drake was ordered to attack a fleet of Spanish ships and intercepted some secret papers about Indian trade and this made merchants in London to found the English East India Company in 1600 , which was granted the patent right for15 years to do the trade with Eastern countries by Queen Elizabeth. This is the origin of the famous English East India Company. We can vaguely saw its strength from Pirates of the Caribbean even if it’s just a film. Accompanied by colonial expansion, the contradiction and dispute among colonial powers was becoming increasingly acute. Britain had the war with Spain, Holland and France successively and the victory in these wars established its marine hegemonic position finally. The rise of the British mentioned above just shows us that the conquest of the ocean makes Europe ahead of the world, especially Britain. However, as early as the 14th century, Zheng He has steered his treasure boat, which was the largest one in the world at that time, sailed as far as Africa. And not only that, but Chinese people just have a better dietary habits than Europeans. As we know once the early European voyages sailed for a long time, scurvy would break out and caused the excessive reduction in sailors. Actually, the outbreak of the terrible disease, someone call it the Black Death on the sea, is not caused by epidemic but because of the lack of vitamin C, which derived from fruits and veggies in general that can’t store for a long time in navigation. This determined the nautical distance of European. However, it is just a non-issue for Chinese people. This benefited from the tea-drinking habit of Chinese people and fortunately, tea just contains vitamin C and is easy to carry. It can be said that China just has the best chance to achieve the first maritime hegemony owing to the good eating habits and advanced shipbuilding technology.Disappointed, this has not happened. If we want to explore the reasons, we should go back and analysis the original intention of the development of maritime trade. Maritime trade aims to exchange goods with other countries which can provide huge profits for merchants. So firstly, let’s look at what Europeans have done to maximize the benefit. As previous mentioned, Europeans can’t take a long-distance voyage so that they can only make maritime trade along the Mediterranean. The problem is the goods they demanded a lot, just like tea, china, silk from China and ivory, gold from Africa, couldn’t get easily unless be changed hands many times by Arab, Jews, north African, Roman and so on. So the Mediterranean route is just an obstacle for Europeans to make profit so they had to shift to the Atlantic to seek a chance. What about China? As the largest supplier of luxuries, the demand for the west was far less than the demand for China. This just caused an imbalanced trade and made China to be in the vantage point. In addition, the traditional self-sufficient economy has long made Chinese people to trade little. All of these gave rise to that China just had no need to sail out and wasn’t conscious of the significance of sea power as well without doubt. So whether a country could become a maritime hegemony, just have nothing to do with the navigational abilities, but determine by the trading in luxury goods. In nowadays, with the development of navigational technology, the trading on sea is no longer the most important issue. The ocean, which has abundant living resources and mineral resources, has tremendous potential in the economic area. The importance of oceans has already been recognized by people. Someone just said that the 21th century is ocean century and various countries have formulated the sea development strategy separately to compete for marine resources. At this time, china has already lagged behind the European countries at the starting line. But it is never too late to strengthen the sense of ocean and maintain maritime interests. The rise of the British can’t be replicated. Nevertheless, times are changing and new opportunities are keeping springing up. The ocean is a mysterious region and still has a great deal of mysteries that aren’t within our grasp. China just missed an opportunity to be a maritime hegemony and we have no reason to miss again. In this new age, there should be a sense of that, “to dominate the ocean, you can dominate the world”.。
