What is the Purpose of Education?
Imagine a group of uneducated men and women living on the planet. You might describe this group of people using following words: primitive, cruel, lacking in knowledge etc... Then you can see what the one of the basic purpose of education and how important education is. Next, you can picture a civilization without education. You might think such a civilization cannot exist for a long time, or they even cannot exist. And the other one, a child learned stealing from his/her parents, he then becomes a thief. Therefore, the purposes of education are making people civilized, keeping cultures and traditions and building one’s characters.
First of all, education, in human world, can make people more civilized. The educators now usually teach kids with goodness and positive things, instead of bad and negative things. The reason, obviously, is that goodness and positive things can make the society in order, referring to be civilized. Otherwise, the world would be chaos and human would not survive in disorder, meaning being not civilized. For instance, a feral girl called Genie, isolated from human by his father and cannot get educated. Never being educated during her childhood, Genie has no social experiences then she is absolutely not civilized. In addition, goodness are good for children's mental development. In the other hand, learning about bad things took place in the past will make us prevent such things happened in the future, which also can make people more civilized. Next, another purpose is to keep cultures and traditions. In the ancient time, when people started grow crops and go hunting to survive, the elders already began teaching their children how to live in different ways under different conditions. Because of the variety of environment, the ways people live are various, which can develop to diverse cultures. Then nowadays, how can we keep our cultures in the future? Just get children educated, using everything we know about our cultures and traditions! Besides, we have to pick up the best parts from different culture and mix them in order to unite the whole human race, which could make human more enlightened too.
Finally, in a personal view, the main purpose of education is to build one’s personality. According to an Indian saying: Plant a thought, harvest an act, plant an act, harvest a habit, plant a habit, harvest a character, plant a character, harvest a destiny. We can know how “planting” thoughts is so important that can order a man’s destiny. Since we know that education is basically to “plant” thoughts, then we get education plans people’s kinds of destinations. As me an example, my father’s career is all about information technology, so he usually talk about it to me, planting a thought, then I became very interested in technology and now I am planning to take a computer science course in university.
As result, the purposes of education mentioned above are making people civilized, keeping cultures and traditions and building o ne’s characters, which are very elementary needs for us. And archiving these purposes is not only important for personal reason, but also are more important for the society and nationals’ destinies.。
