ATapestries (挂毯) enjoy a long tradition. Basically, a tapestry is a large piece of cloth with pictures woven into it. The ancient Egyptians and the Ancient Incas covered their dead with clothing woven with tapestries. The Greek Empire made use of tapestries in their buildings. However, we are most familiar with the brand of tapestry that began in the Middle Ages.Perhaps one of the most famous tapestries is the Bayeux Tapestry. This tapestry was commissioned (委托制作)sometime between 1070 and 1080 by the half-brother of William the Conqueror. The pictures on the tapestry show the battle between the Norman William and the Saxon Harold in 1066. Even though it is called a tapestry, though, the Bayeux Tapestry is technically no such thing. The pictures are not woven into the tapestry, but rather embroidered(刺绣)on.The Catholic Church was one of the biggest promoters of tapestry. Because most of the ordinary church members were unable to read or write, the church leaders recognized the importance of using tapestries to tell Bible stories. Consequently, church walls were hung with the representations, and the masses could see the pictures of important Biblical events. Tapestries were often made in sets, and the oldest existing set was woven between 1375 and 1379.Tapestries were not only used for religious purposes. During the Middle Ages, the nobility (贵族)counted it a privilege and honor to have a tapestry. Traveling nobility took their tapestries with them to increase their comfort and to show their social position. The making of tapestries fell out of favor during the Renaissance, and were no longer original works of art. Today, most tapestries are made industrially, and are copies of famous tapestries and paintings.1. 高考真题周周练〔16〕阅读理解AWhen milk arrived on the doorstepWhen I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn't take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note —“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery〞—and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear. All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery. There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊). Every so often my son's friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.21. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer ______.A. to show his magical powerB. to pay for the deliveryC. to satisfy his curiosityD. to please his mother22. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy's house?A. He wanted to have tea there.B. He was a respectable person.C. He was treated as a family member.D. He was fully trusted by the family.23. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now.B. It has been driven out of the market.C. Its service is getting poor.D. It is forbidden by law.24. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?A. He missed the good old days.B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.C. He needed it for his milk bottles.D. He planted flowers in it.BWhile small may be beautiful, tall is just plain uncomfortable it seems, particularly when it comes to staying in hotels and eating in restaurants. The Tall Persons Club Great Britain (TPCGB), which was formed six months ago to campaign for the needs of the tall, has turned its attention to hotels and restaurants. Beds that are too small, shower heads that are too low, and restaurant tables with hardly any leg-room all make life difficult for those of above average height, it says. But it is not just the extra-tall whose needs are not being met. The average height of the population has been increasing yet the standard size of beds, doorways, and chairs has remained unchanged.“The bedding industry says a bed should be six inches larger than the person using it, so even a king-size bed at 6′6″ (6 feet and 6 inches) is falling short for 25% of men, while the standard 6′3″ bed caters for less than half of the male population,〞 said TPCGB president Phil Heinricy, “seven-foot beds would work fine.〞Similarly, restaurant tables can cause no end of problems. Small tables, which mean the long-legged have to sit a foot or so away from them, are enough to make tall customers go elsewhere. Some have already taken note, however. At Queens Moat Houses' Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh,6′6″ beds are now put in as standard after requests for longer beds from taller visitors, particularly Americans.25. What is the purpose of the TPCGB campaign?A. To provide better services.B. To rebuild hotels and restaurants.C. To draw public attention to the needs of the tall.D. To attract more people to become its members.26. Which of the following might be a bed of proper length according to Phil Heinricy?A. 7′2″.B. 7′.C. 6′6″.D. 6′3″.27.What may happen to restaurants with small tables?A. They may lose some customers.B. They may start businesses elsewhere.C. They have to find easy chairs to match the tables.D. They have to provide enough space for the long-legged.28. What change has already been made in a hotel in Edinburgh?A. Tall people pay more for larger beds.B. 6′6″ beds have taken the place of 6′3″ beds.C. Special rooms are kept for Americans.D. Guest rooms are standardized.广东语法填空阅读下面短文,按照句子结构的语法性和上下文连贯的要求,在空格处填入一个适当的词或使用括号中词语的正确形式填空。

By using , which is being added to a number of university computers across the UK, students can raise money every time they search, but it won’t cost them a penny.Research shows that students are extremely passionate about supporting charity — 88% of full time students have used the Internet to give to charity. This age group is often the least likely to have their own income. 19% of 22 to 24 year olds have short-term debts of more than £5,000. With rising personal debt levels in this age group, due to university tuition fees or personal loans and a lack of long-term savings, traditional methods of donating to charity are often not appealing or possible.Beth Truman, a 21 year old recent university graduate, has used to donate to her chosen charity, the RSPCA, for two years and has seen the “wugging” movement grow in popularity with students. “When you’re at university you become more socially aware, but it’ssometimes hard to give to others when you have little money yourself,” says Beth. “Wugging is great for people in this age group as it allows them to use the technology on a daily basis to give to charity, without costing them a single penny.”Wugging is perfect for people who want to be more socially aware and supportive but don’t feel they have the means to do so. Students using the web can raise money for causes they care about without costing them anything in terms of time or money, and charities get a valuable source of funding. works like any other search engine, allowing users to search for information, news and images bu t users can decide which of the UK’s 170,000 charities they would like to support through their clicks. then makes monthly payments to every registered charity. Complete the diagram / Fill in the numbered blanks byusing the information for the passage.Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answerHow can we get rid of garbage? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that men might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest using garbage as an energy source. For a long time people buried garbage or dumped it on empty land. Now, empty land is scarce. But more and more garbage is produced each year. But garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look like coal, petroleum, or natural gas; but they are chemically similar to these fossil fuels. As we use up our fossil-fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as an energy source.Burning garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States have been burning garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby buildings. In Paris, France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the city's garbage each year. The amount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil!But there are problems in using garbage as a fuel. Garbage that burns easily, such as food scraps and paper, must be separated from metals, glass, and other materials that do not burn easily. This separation process is normally costly.Another problem is that burning garbage can pollute the air.Our fossil fuel supplies are limited. Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage piling up on the earth.Title: 41Ⅰ42 :●the shortage of 43●the shortage of 44 for holding garbageⅡ45 :●used to boil water●used to 46●used to 47 nearby buildings hotⅢ48 :●49 separation process●50Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.Different cultures emphasize the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in "small talk", usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job.In many European countries -- like the UK or France -- people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.51. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything y et.I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend’s mother passed away unexpectedly. Another friend with me then said, “Just go. Just be there.” I did, and I will never regret it.Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS-related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others’ presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. But before you hide your running shoes, it might be worth giving that crazy idea a go.According to The Huffington Post, an outdoor run in winter, as opposed to one on a treadmill (跑步机), burns more calories because the body is working hard to regulate(调节)its core temperature. Furthermore, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures --- and quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in the summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. It adjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel alive.Of course, the threat of smog in some built-up areas is a further hurdle to winter exercise. Heart attacks, stroke, lung cancer and asthma are all dangers of running in smog. The combination of air pollution and exercise increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid car exhaust(尾气), and go early in the morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.32.How does cold weather benefit runners, compared with warm weather?A. They can run more slowly.B. Some soils aren’t good for planting some trees. 37 It’ll help you determine the kind of fertilizers necessary for the tree.Digging too deep or too narrow a hole is also a mistake we tend to make while planting a tree. If the hole is dug too deep, the roots don’t get enough oxygen supply, resulting in improper growth of the tree. Besides, a narrow hole won’t allow the roots to expand and support the tree firmly.38 Ideally, the planting hole for a tree should be twice as wide and deep as the root ball.To protect the roots of a tree, we need to put a mulch (护根) on them. First of all, it’s really important to select the right type of mulch. 39 In addition, we must use a proper amount of mulching. Over mulching may cause damage to the roots, while inadequate mulching may result in dryness around the roots.40 Walk around the trees to recognize the problems that have appeared, and fix them before they go out of control.A. Different species require different planting places.B. Most newly planted trees die because of too much water.C. However, there are some mistakes we often make while planting trees.D. We should make our choice based on the plant species and the type of soil.E. So have a soil test before deciding on the planting place would be wiser.F. The most important thing is to monitor the growth of the tree on a regular basis.G. This means the grains will have more starch while the root will exude less nutrients that will later be turned into methane by microbes (微生物) in the soil, Sun, who works with Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, told Xinhua.“It solves two major problems mankind faces at one time: environmental degradation and the need for increased grain output,〞 Wang Feng, another scientist, said, adding that the rice can cut methane discharge by more than 90 percent during summer and more than half during autumn, as “the rice displays a greater emission reduction effect in high temperatures.〞 Meanwhile, small-scale trials have also suggested an increased output: a single plant of the new breed has 300 more grains with a starch content 10 percent higher. Wang said the team is working on applications for the rice in different areas, seasons and using different farming techniques. “It’s still far away from mass application, but at least we see the light of hope.〞Human-induced methane, though less abundant than carbon dioxide in the air, is responsible for 20 percent of the global warming effect. Rice paddies are the largest single source of methane linked to human activity. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, China produces 209 million tons of rice in 2014, or 28 percent of the world’s total of 734 million.25.SUSIBA2 Rice will be a major breakthrough because______.A.it tastes with a barley flavor.B.it well balances environmental protection and grains increase.C.it contains more starch than the ordinary rice.D.it gives off less methane in summer than in winter.26.What can we learn from the text?A.Scientists will soon grow the new rice in large areas.B.Human-related methane contributes most to global warming.C.China may contribute greatly to global warming reduction.D.Rice fields will be reduced all over the world.27.The purpose of this writing is to________.A.ask people to cut down on their dependence on rice consumption.B.draw people’s attention to the serious consequences of global warming. 位敦市安定阳光实验学校中学高2014级暑期加课英语练习题一成绩:第一节:阅读理解(4*8=32分)AThis Monday, the nation will start to celebrate Presidents’ Day, just seven days before George Washington’s birthday. Everyone agrees that day is a holiday, but is it just to celebrate George Washington’s Birthday? What about Abraham Lincoln? Some government offices call it Presidents’ Day. Others say the holiday is officially Washington’s Birthday. Confused yet?George Washington was elected the country’s first Preside nt on April 30, 1789. Soon after, Americans began publicly celebrating his birthday. Presidential historians say the actual date of George Washington’s birth is February 11, 1732. But a change in the calendar system 20 years later shifted all dates, making Washington’s birthday February 22, which is now well accepted. In 1879. Congress made Washington’s birthday an official federal holiday. It was the first federal holiday to celebrate an individual’s birthday. In 1968, Congress passed the Monday Holidays Act,which moved the holiday to the third Monday in February. The new law did not change the holiday’s name.It was still called Washington’s Birthday, even though some lawmakers wanted to call it Presidents’ Day to include Abraham Lincoln, whose actual birthday is February 12.Many people argue that the holiday should celebrate all past Presidents. They feel Lincoln should be honored for his role in preserving the nation during the Civil War and helping to free slaves. Others feel the holiday should only honor Washington, the country’s first President. They say shifting the focus away from Washington would mean future generations of kids would not know about the Father of Our Country.Laws have been introduced in Congress over the years to require use of the term "George Washington’s Birthday."but none of those laws have been passed. Meanwhile, many state governments and school districts now use the term "Presidents’ Day."Many stoles also use it to promote holiday sales.Should the holiday honor Washington, Washington and Lincoln, or all past Presidents? One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled(翻耕的)soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground. As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden, I remember Dad pushing the tiller(耕作机)ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow com, and our favorite ― red tomatoes. As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. As Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden. But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of multicolored vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed them, he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes. For the first few years after he died, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone's garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up a fair amount of soil, something caught the comer of my eye and I had to smile, It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.5.
