I spent a long time brainstorming ideas and finally settled on talking about my love of art, reading, and my silly pet bunny Fluffkins. Once I had outlined what I wanted to say, the actual writing part was really difficult for me. I'm much better at telling stories out loud thanputting thoughts into words on paper. I must have rewritten my speech like a million times before I felt ready to start practicing!The next big challenge was the rehearsal process. I'm the type of person who gets really nervous speaking in front of others, even my own family. My palms get all sweaty, my stomach feels queasy, and I stumble over my words. Practicing in front of my parents was so embarrassing at first! But they were super supportive and gave me tips like maintaining eye contact, speaking slowly and clearly, and using hand motions to engage the audience. Little by little, I got more comfortable delivering my speech out loud.Finally, the day of the contest arrived! I woke up that morning feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. When I got to school, some of the other contestants looked so calm and confident. A part of me wanted to back out, but I remembered how hard I had worked and decided to see it through to the end.The contest kicked off after lunch in our school auditorium. There were even real judges from the community that would be scoring each speech! As the first few kids went up, I felt my heart pounding harder and harder. Before I knew it, Mrs. Robinson was calling my name to come up to the stage. With shaky legs, I walked up to the microphone and looked out at the sea of facesstaring back at me. I took a deep breath and reminded myself of my parents' advice to imagine I was just talking to them.In that moment, all my practice paid off. The words I had memorized started flowing smoothly and I was able to get through my speech without any major slip-ups! I even remembered to make eye contact, gesture with my hands, and smile. When I finished, the audience burst into applause which made me beam with pride. What a rush!Although I didn't end up winning one of the top prizes, I walked away from that experience feeling like a champion. Sure, public speaking is still a little scary for me. But now I know that with good preparation and a positive mindset, I can conquer just about any challenge. I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone in a supportive environment.Since the speech contest, I've noticed feeling more confident when it comes to raising my hand in class, introducing myself to new people, or speaking up in group settings. It's like a little voice inside me says "you've got this!" instead of the old shy, hesitant voice I used to hear. I know the skills I've developed will benefit me for many years to come in all kinds of situations.My advice to anyone feeling apprehensive about public speaking or trying something new? Don't let fear hold you back!Start small by practicing in front of a mirror or close friends and family. It's okay if you feel nervous, that's totally normal. But remind yourself that feeling prepared and believing in your abilities is half the battle. If an opportunity comes your way to push yourself, take it! You may surprise yourself by how capable and brave you can be. I just had the most amazing experience that I can't wait to tell you all about.A few weeks ago, my teacher Mrs. Henderson announced that our class would be having a self-introduction speech contest. Atfirst, I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it because speaking in front of a big audience seemed really scary. But my best friend Samantha said she was going to enter, so I decided to give it a try too!The first thing we had to do was write a speech introducing ourselves. Mrs. Henderson said it could be about anything we wanted, as long as it helped the audience get to know us better. I thought really hard about what to talk about. I loved playing sports, especially basketball and soccer. I'm also really into reading fantasy books and playing video games. Oh, and I have the cutest puppy named Rufus!After a few days of brainstorming, I finally decided my speech would be about my monster truck collection and how it got started. I have over 100 monster trucks of all different sizes, colors and designs. My oldest one is from when I was just a baby!I spent a few days writing my speech, making sure to describe my favorite trucks in lots of detail. I even brought in a couple to show during my speech.Once our speeches were written, it was time to start practicing. Mrs. Henderson had us all practice in front of the class a few times to get used to speaking in front of people. Samantha and I also practiced at home together which made it less scary.Finally, the day of the big speech contest arrived! The whole school gathered in the auditorium and there was even a panel of judges - the principal, a teacher from another class, and a parent volunteer. When it was my turn, I took a deep breath, walked up to the microphone, and launched into my speech about my beloved monster truck collection. About halfway through, I was able to relax and just have fun with it. I made sure to show my trucks to the audience and even did a little monster truck race sound effect!When I was done, everyone clapped and cheered. The judges had smiles on their faces, so I felt like my speech went really well. After all the speeches were finished, the judges huddled together to decide on the winners. I didn't really care if I won or not at that point - I was just proud that I did it! As I munched on my pepperoni pizza, I thought about everything I had gained from this experience. First of all, I conquered my fear of public speaking - something that will really help me in the future. I also learned how to organize my thoughts and put together a good speech. If I can get up on stage in front of so many people and crush that speech, I realized I can do anything I set my mind to!The next day at school, Samantha and I were little celebrities. If you have a message in your heart that you feel needs to be shared with the world, you owe it to yourself to find the courage and take that leap. Because when you do, incredible things can happen!That speech contest was one of the most challenging, rewarding, and joyful adventures I've ever been on.
