b is Italcementi’s new Research andInnovation Center. Designed by Americanarchitect Richard Meier and located withinthe Kilometro Rosso Science & TechnologyPark near Bergamo, the building covers asurface area of 23,000 m2with 7,500 m2exclusively dedicated to research activities. The innovative aspects of the project combined to the building’s sus tainability and the excellence of the construction methods used make b a landmark of contemporary architecture and a sign of solid commitment to a better quality of life and cleaner environment. b was built using innovative alternative materials in compliance with the requirements of LEED certification, the world’s most popular and authoritative system for rating environmental sustainability. The outer cladding of the structure is made of TX Active®, Italcementi’s “smog-eating” cement that reduces pollutants in the air. A number of walls are made of i.light® “transparent” cement developed by Italcementi laboratories and used for the first time for the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Thermal solar panels, photovoltaic panels for generating clean energy and geothermal climate control ensure energy savings exceeding 60 percent of the current regulatory requirements.b staff will include people from CTG’s Research & Development Management and Laboratories Management as well as people from Italcementi’s Innovation.b, the heart of Italcementi Research and InnovationTHE ARCHITECTRichard MeierRichard Meier is one of the great masters of contemporary architecture. Among his best-known projects are the High Museum in Atlanta (1983), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona (1997), the Getty Center in Los Angeles (1997) and the Dives in Misericordia church in Rome, for which Italcementi served as technical partner. “The new Italcementi Research Center will not only be an iconic building expressing the Group’s reputation for technical expertise; it will be a benchmark for sustainable design in Europe,” says Richard Meier.THE STRUCTUREArchitectural shapeThe building, designed on the basis of a structural grid of 7.5x7.5-m modules, follows and reinforces the V-shape of the site. The two wings facing a central courtyard seem to accentuate the building’s closure towards the highway and its opening towards the surrounding green area. The main entrance, around the northeast corner of the building, is further marked by an approx. 20-m cantilevered and floating roof and the concrete curtain wall that contributes to reinforcing the mainly horizontal development of the entire building. The impressive canopy that lies above the main entrance creates a two-storey generous covered public plaza that leads to a sky-lit atrium from which the two wings of the building depart. Both wings surround a central courtyard from which the research labs located in the basement can be easily reached, also by heavy vehicles. The atrium leads to the staircases and lifts, which perform as vertical connections, flanked by a dramatic ramp offering breathtaking views of Bergamo Alta’s High Town. The first wing, which runs parallel to the highway, house labs, offices and a huge library with 10,000+ books. The library is set to become an international reference for project engineers and technicians addressing cement and concrete-related issues. The second wing, running perpendicularly to the first wing, houses a cafeteria and a large conference room on the ground floor, and formal corporate offices on the second floor.Pagina 2The two-storey multipurpose conference room, with possible seating for up to 240 people, has huge glass windows looking out on the internal courtyard and a gallery forming an internal street on the second floor. A second smaller room floats this space on the second floor and provides a perfect venue for both formal and business meetings.INNOVATIVE MATERIALSTX Active® for bThe b building is covered with cement containing TX Active®, the photocatalytic “smog-eating” active principle that has already been used by Richard Meier on the Dives in Misericordia church project in Rome. b’s structural elements made of white concre te –columns and roofing shells –required development of high-strength white concrete capable of complying with stringent technical, durability and unalterability specifications. The TX Active®-based cement has proven capable of meeting all such structural and aesthetic requirements in addition to eliminating pollution with its photocatalytic action. Using TX Active®on a project contributes one credit in LEED’s “Innovation in Design” category.i.light®“transparent” cementSome walls in the b building are made of i.light®, the new “transparent”cement developed by Italcementi laboratories and used for the first time on the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai.i.light® is a precast cement-based element capable of letting light filter through walls while guaranteeing the solidity of high performance concrete. It is obtained by combining a special polymer, more transparent than plastic, to a brand-newly developed mortar.Innovative concretesb is built out of both prefabricated and cast-in-place high fluidity white and gray concrete. The most valuable structures – those of the laboratories – have been built with high performance cast-in-place gray concrete. The round columns, with diameters of 650 and 800 millimeters, have been poured into metal frame formwork, adequately foamed at the base, to prevent material from spilling. All types of concrete used in the project featurePagina 3innovative high strength properties and have been developed and tested in Italcementi’s laboratories.Alternative materialsAlternative materials have been used to build b as specified under the LEED certification system (usage of products coming from recycled materials and/or produced locally). Concrete containing recycled aggregates from construction & demolition or blast furnace slag, recovered within 800 km of the project site, was used to build the floor screeds, the foundations and the outer walls. Other portions of the building were constructed with recycled slag-containing cement as well as other materials obtained entirely from industrial process waste. The geothermal energy systemb is equipped with a geothermal energy system ensuring effective winter warming and summer cooling for the building. Fifty-one wells serving the building were dug as far down as 100 m from road level to guarantee thermal exchange with the subsoil. The system consists of three loops and three heat pumps and contributes to winter heating and summer cooling, with energy savings of up to 50% and 25% respectively, thus reducing overall CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. The photovoltaic and solar heating panel systemsThe new structure houses 420 solar panels with an installed peak power capacity of 90 kW. Total electricity produced on a yearly basis is estimated at about 96,000 kWh, corresponding to an overall CO2emission reduction of 52 tons per year. Fifty square meters of solar heating panels help meet 65% of the building’s yearly demand for hot water. The adoption of solar and photovoltaic panels reduces the consumption of conventional energy sources and related CO2emission into the atmosphere, thus contributing to safeguarding the environment.ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATIONS AND AWARDSLEED Leadership in Energy and Environmental DesignPagina 4b is designed and built to conform to LEED standards, the most authoritative and widely used rating system for assessing the environmental sustainability of buildings. The system specifies the requirements for designing, constructing and managing buildings in an optimal and eco-compatible manner. The final rating is assigned based on a definite set of pre-requisit es and “credits” such as sustainable site; indoor environmental quality; innovation in design; water, energy, materials and resource management; regional priority.b aims to achieve LEED Platinum certification, the highest rating available.b: An award-winning centerThe Italcementi’s Research and Innovation Cent er has already earned important international recognition. In 2009, it was honored with the Green Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. In May 2010, the European Commission awarded b the European GreenBuilding Award as the best new building in Italy for energy efficiency in the “Best New Building” category. The structure is capable of saving 60% more energy than required by current legislation thanks to the construction methods and materials used in the building’s cladding and use of renewable energy sources.THE LOCATIONb at Kilometro Rossob is located in the Kilometro Rosso Science and Technology Park on the outskirts of Bergamo. The Park site already hosts renowned research centers and the laboratories of prominent high-tech enterprises and scientific institutes. Around 3,000 people will play an active role in this place of aggregation, fulfilling its mission of fostering cooperative projects and synergies in support of research and technological innovation.b will host engineers, technicians and researchers developing technological, functional and stylistic innovations for new construction materials.Pagina 5。
