Chinese banquets are an important part of business and social life in China. They are often held
to celebrate important events, build relationships, or seal business deals. Proper etiquette is
essential at these formal occasions.
Seating is arranged by seniority and importance, with the host and most honored guest seated in
the center facing the entrance. Food is served on a large Lazy Susan in the middle of each round
table. Many dishes are presented.
To begin, the host will give a short welcoming speech and make a toast. Guests raise their glasses
and say "ganbei" which means "dry your cup". It's polite to stand and toast the host and other
guests.
While eating, you should sample each dish but pace yourself as many courses will be served. Use
serving chopsticks to take food, not your own chopsticks. Never stick your chopsticks upright in
your rice bowl as this symbolizes death.
Tea is served throughout the meal. When your cup is refilled, tap two fingers on the table and say
"xiexie" to express thanks. At the end of the meal, it is polite to leave some food in your bowl to
show the host's generosity.
Follow the host's lead on when to start and finish the meal. Offer to reciprocate the invitation
and thank them sincerely. Chinese banquets are a delicate dance of ritual and etiquette.
Following these guidelines will help you make a good impression.
