和古人寻求永恒与不朽相反，聪慧的现代人寻求相对与新变。世界属于流动，唯“一切皆变”的规律才能永恒。就中国诗歌而论，从《诗经》而《楚辞》，从律绝而曲令，从旧体诗而新诗，留下的正是流动的轨迹。任何一个时代的中国诗歌总是在对自己时代新的审美精神的最大适应中获得出世权，中国新诗亦如此。

新诗是“五四”新文化运动的产物，又是“诗体大解放”的产物。郭沫若的自由诗宣告了“诗体大解放”的最初胜利。“诗体大解放”的倡导者们虽然激烈地反传统，其实，传统的诗学范畴仍潜在地给他们以影响。胡适就自称《尝试集》的“尝试”二字也是从古诗那里取用的。

传统是具有神圣性、社会性、广泛性、相对稳定性的文化现象。任何民族的诗歌都不可能完全推开传统而另谋生路。推掉几千年的诗歌积蓄去“解放”，只能使新诗成为轻飘、轻薄的无本之木。

诗，总是具有诗之作为诗的共有品格。然而，作为文化现象，不同民族的文化又会造成诗的差异。大而言之，以古希腊为代表的西方文化和以中国为代表的东方文化，在天人关系、对人的看法、对自然的看法、对历史发展的看法上从来不同。因此，西方诗与东方诗也有很大不同。

把话说得更远一点，西方诗学和东方诗学也有颇大差异，无论是二者的诗学观念、诗学形态，还是二者的发展之路。西方诗学推崇戏剧，东方诗学以抒情诗为本；西方诗学注重分析性、抽象性、系统性，东方诗学注重领悟性、整体性、经验性；西方诗学运用纯概念，东方诗学运用类概念；西方诗学滔滔，东方诗学沉静等等。

My greatest regret in life is that I failed to tell my superb teachers how much they

contributed to my early education.

Ruth Hammerman taught English to the eighth-graders. She was the first to show me the

rules of what Evelyn Waugh called our “rich and delicate language.” She was a no-nonsense

instructor. Unlike common teachers, she diagramed (用图表展示) sentences so we could

know the grammar rules. She never seemed to be tired of the simple pleasures of sharing her

learning.

Under her influence, I had the strong belief that language needs to be well-spoken and

Yesterday was awful. We had what they’re calling a “weather event” here, and it poured about 14 inches of

rain in a day, causing by far the worst flash flooding I’ve seen in the 13 years in the place where we’ve lived. The

kids and I ended up being trapped in our car in rapidly rising flood waters. The engine had stopped and couldn’t

start again; the kids were terrified and I didn’t know what to do. Then a man in a 4WD pulled up beside us and

offered to pull us out of the water.

When he got us to higher ground he asked where our home was. We lived about 2km down the road, so he

pulled us all the way back to our street before going off to look for more people in trouble.

I don’t know this man and I ‘ll probably never see him again, but the kids and I owe him a huge debt of
