Next Year Marks the EU's 50th Anniversary of the TreatyA. After a period of introversion and stunned self-disbelief, continental European governments will recover their enthusiasm for pan-Europeaninstitution-building in 2007. Whether the European public will welcome a return to what voters in two countries had rejected so short a time before is another matter.B. There are several reasons for Europe’s recovering self-confidence. For years European economies had been lagging dismally behind America (to say nothing of Asia), but in 2006 the large continental economies had one of their best years for a decade, briefly outstripping America in terms of growth. Since politics often reacts to economic change with a lag, 2006’s improvement in economic growth will have its impact in 2007, though the recovery may be ebbing by then.C. The coming year also marks a particular point in a political cycle so regular that it almost seems to amount to a natural law. Every four or five years,European countries take a large stride towards further integration by signing a new treaty: the Maastricht treaty in 1992, the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1997, the Treaty of Nice in 2001. And in 2005 they were supposed to ratify a European constitution, laying the ground for yet more integration—until the calm rhythm was rudely shattered by French and Dutch voters. But the political impetus to sign something every four or five years has only been interrupted, not immobilised, by this setback.D. In 2007 the European Union marks the 50th anniversary of another treaty —the Treaty of Rome, its founding charter. Government leaders have already agreed to celebrate it ceremoniously, restating their commitment to “ever closer union”and the basic ideals of European unity. By itself, and in normal circumstances, the EU’s 50th-birthday greeting to itself would be fairly meaningless, a routine expression of European good fellowship. But it does not take a Machiavelli to spot that once governments have signed the declaration (and it seems unlikely anyone would be so uncollegiate as to veto it) they will already be halfway towards committing themselves to a new treaty. All that will be necessary will be to incorporate the 50th-anniversary declaration into a new treaty containing a number of institutionaland other reforms extracted from the failed attempt at constitution-building and —hey presto—a new quasi-constitution will be ready.E. According to the German government—which holds the EU’s agenda-setting presidency during the first half of 2007—there will be a new draft of a slimmed-down constitution ready by the middle of the year, perhaps to put to voters, perhaps not. There would then be a couple of years in which it will be discussed, approved by parliaments and, perhaps, put to voters if that is deemed unavoidable. Then, according to bureaucratic planners in Brussels and Berlin, blithely ignoring the possibility of public rejection, the whole thing will be signed, sealed and a new constitution delivered in 2009-10. Europe will be nicely back on schedule. Its four-to-five-year cycle of integration will have missed only one beat.F. The resurrection of the European constitution will be made more likely in 2007 because of what is happening in national capitals. The European Union is not really an autonomous organisation. If it functions, it is because the leaders of the big continental countries want it to, reckoning that an active European policy will help them get done what they want to do in their own countries.G. That did not happen in 2005-06. Defensive, cynical and self-destructive,the leaders of the three largest euro-zone countries—France, Italy and Germany —were stumbling towards their unlamented ends. They saw no reason to pursue any sort of European policy and the EU, as a result, barely functioned. But by the middle of 2007 all three will have gone, and this fact alone will transform the European political landscape.H. The upshot is that the politics of the three large continental countries, bureaucratic momentum and the economics of recovery will all be aligned to give a push towards integration in 2007. That does not mean the momentum will be irresistible or even popular. The British government, for one, will almost certainly not want to go with the flow, beginning yet another chapter in the long history of confrontation between Britain and the rest of Europe. More important, the voters will want a say. They rejected the constitution in 2005. It would befoolish to assume they will accept it after 2007 just as a result of an artful bit of tinkering.Questions 1-6 Do the following statemets reflect the claims of the writer in Reading Passage 1?Write your answer in Boxes 1-6 on your answer sheet.TRUE if the statemenht reflets the claims of the writerFALSE if the statement contradicts the claims of the writerNOT GIVEN if it is possbile to say what the writer thinks about this1.After years’ introspection and mistrust, continental European governments will resurrect their enthusiasm for more integration in 2007.2. Sleep medication linked to bizarre behaviourNew evidence has linked a commonly prescribed sleep medication with bizarre behaviours, including a case in which a woman painted her front door in her sleep.UK and Australian health agencies have released information about 240 cases of odd occurrences, including sleepwalking, amnesia and hallucinations among people taking the drug zolpidem. While doctors say that zolpidem can offer much-needed relief for people with sleep disorders, they caution that these newly reported cases should prompt a closer look at its possible side effects.Zolpidem, sold under the brand names Ambien, Stilnoct and Stilnox, is widely prescribed to treat insomnia and other disorders such as sleep apnea. Various forms of the drug, made by French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis, were prescribed 674,500 times in 2005 in the UK.A newly published report from Australia’s Federal Health Department describes 104 cases of hallucinations and 62 cases of amnesia experienced by people taking zolpidem since marketing of the drug began there in 2000. The health department report also mentioned 16 cases of strangesleepwalking by people taking the medication.Midnight snackIn one of these sleepwalking cases a patient woke with a paintbrush in her hand after painting the front door to her house. Another case involved a woman who gained 23 kilograms over seven months while taking zolpidem. “It was only when she was discovered in front of an open refrigerator while asleep that the problem was resolved,” according to the report. The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, meanwhile, has recorded 68 cases of adverse reactions to zolpidem from 2001 to 2005.The newly reported cases in the UK and Australia add to a growing list of bizarre sleepwalking episodes linked to the drug in other countries, including reports of people sleep-driving while on the medication. In one case, a transatlantic flight had to be diverted after a passenger caused havoc after taking zolpidem.Hypnotic effectsThere is no biological pathway that has been proven to connect zolpidem with these behaviours. The drug is a benzodiazepine-like hypnotic that promotes deep sleep by interacting with brain receptors for a chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid. While parts of the brain become less active during deep sleep, the body can still move, making sleepwalking a possibility. The product information for prescribers advises that psychiatric adverse effects, including hallucinations, sleepwalking and nightmares, are more likely in the elderly, and treatment should be stopped if they occur.Patient advocacy groups say they would like government health agencies and drug companies to take a closer look at the possible risks associated with sleep medicines. They stress that strange sleepwalking and sleep-driving behaviours can have risky consequences.“When people do something in which they’re not in full control it’s always a danger,” says Vera Sharav of the New York-based Alliance for Human Research Protection, a US network that advocates responsible and ethical medical research practices.Tried and tested“The more reports that come out about the potential side effects of the drug, the more research needs to be done to understand if these are real side effects,”says sleep researcher Kenneth Wright at the University of Colorado in Boulder, US.Millions of people have taken the drug without experiencing any strange side effects, points out Richard Millman at Brown Medical School, director of the SleepDisorders Center of Lifespan Hospitals in Providence, Rhode Island, US. He says that unlike older types of sleep medications, zolpidem does not carry as great a risk of addiction. And Wright notes that some of the reports of “sleep-driving” linked to zolpidem can be easily explained: some patients have wrongly taken the drug right before leaving work in hopes that the medicine will kick in by the time they reach home. Doctors stress that the medication should be taken just before going to bed.The US Food & Drug Administration says it is continuing to "actively investigate" and collect information about cases linking zolpidem to unusual side effects. The Ambien label currently lists strange behaviour as a “special concern” for people taking the drug. “It’s a possible rare adverse event,” says Sanofi-Aventis spokesperson Melissa Feltmann, adding that the strange sleepwalking behaviours “may not necessarily be caused by the drug” but instead result from an underlying disorder. She says that “the safety profile [of zolpidem] is well established”. The drug received approval in the US in 1993.Questions 1-6 Do the following statements agree with the information given in the reading passage? In boxes 1-6 on your answer sheet writeTRUE if the statement is true according to the passageFALSE if the statement is false according to the passageNOT GIVEN if the information is not given in the passage1. I. Listening Comprehension (…)II. Grammar and VocabularySection A(A)When I settled in Chicago,my new city seemed so big and unfriendly. Then I had a physical problem and had to go to hospital for (25) __________ thorough examination. It seemed a small challenge (26) __________ (compare) to the one I was about to face, but things started to go wrong right from the beginning. Not having a car or knowing the city, I was depending on a couple of buses (27) __________ (get) me from A to B. (28) __________ I’d left myself plenty of time, soon it was obvious that I was going to be late, as I had mistakenly boarded a bus that was taking me in the opposite direction.I got off the bus and stood on the pavement, not knowing what to do. I looked into the eyes of a stranger who was trying to get past me. Surprisingly, instead of moving on, she stopped to ask if I was OK. After I explained my situation to her, she pointed to a bus stop across the street, (29) __________ a bus would take me back into the city to my appointment. (30) __________ (sit) there waiting, I felt grateful that someone had been willing to help. Then, hearing a horn nearby, I looked up to see a car with my new friend waving at me to get in. She (31) __________ (return) to offer me a lift to the hospital.Such unexpected kindness (32) __________ a passer-by was a lovely gift to receive. As I climbed out of the car at the hospital and turned to thank her, she smiled and told me not to lose faith, for all things are possible. (B)Most parents, I suppose, have had the experience of reading a bedtime story to their children. And they (33) __________ have realized how difficult it is to write a good children’s book. Either the author has aimed too much, (34) __________ children can’t follow wh at is in his (or more often, her ) story, or the story seems to be talking to the readers. The best children’s books are neither very difficult (35) __________ very simple, and satisfy the child who hears the story and the adult who reads it. Unfortunately, there are in fact few books like this, so the problem of finding the right bedtime story is not easy to solve. This may be why many of the books regarded as works of children’s literature (36) __________ (write) for grownups in fact “Alice in Wonderland” is perhaps the most obvious of this.Children, left for (37) __________, often show the worst possible interest in literature. Just leave a child in a bookshop or a library and he will (38) __________ (willingly) choose the books written in an unimaginative way, or have a look at the most children’s comics, full of the stories and jokes which are the rejections of teachers and righting-thinking parents.Perhaps we parents should stop trying to brainwash children into (39) __________ (accept) our taste in literature. After all, children and adults are so different that we parents should not expect (40) __________ they will enjoy the same books. So I suppose we’ll just have to compromise(妥协)over the bedtime story.insights, findings, and wisdom of the human race. The enormous success of science has led to the general belief that scientists have developed and are (42) __________ a "method" — a method that is extremely effective in gaining, organizing, and applying new knowledge. Although this method has a certain appeal, it has not been the key to most of the (43) __________ in science. Regular research, experimentation without guessing, and other methods account for much of the progress in science.Rather than a particular method, the success of science has more to do with an attitude common to scientists. This attitude is essentially one of (44) __________ before the facts. In the scientific spirit, Scientists must accept facts even when they would like them to be different, regardless of their reputation or the number of (45) __________. They must strive to distinguish between what they see and what they wish to see. People have traditionally tended to adopt general rules, beliefs, creeds, theories, and ideas without (46) __________ questioning their validity. The most widespread assumptions are the least questioned. Most often, when an idea is adopted, particular attention is given to cases that seem to support it, while cases refuting it are ignored. In this sense, scientists must be truly expert at (47) __________ their minds, because science seeks not to defend our beliefs but to improve them.Away from their profession, scientists are no more honest than other people. But in their profession they work in an area that (48) __________ honesty. To reduce the likelihood of error, scientists should accept the words only of those whose ideas, theories, and findings are (49) __________— at least in principle. Sooner or later, mistake are bound to be found out and wishful thinking to be exposed. The honesty so (50) __________ to the progress of science thus becomes a matter of self-interest to scientists.III. The final required section of a research report is a discussion of the results obtained and a statement of any conclusions drawn from them. Of primary importance is the conclusion for future decision making. 63 , the discussion section must access the research results fully: were they validly obtained, are they complete or limited, are they 64 over a wide range of circumstances? Warmer air rises, while cooler air falls. These movements create a difference in atmospheric pressure. If the pressure changes over a large area, winds start to blow in a huge circle. High-pressure air is pulled toward a low-pressure center. Thick clouds form and heavy rains fall as the storm gains speed and moves over the ocean. Storms can get stronger as they move over warm ocean waters. The strongest, fastest winds of a hurricane blow in the area known as the eye wall. It surrounds the center, or eye, of the storm. The eye itself is calm by comparison.Wind speeds in the most severe ocean storms can reach more than 250 kilometers an hour. Up to 50 centimeters of rain can fall. Some storms have produced more than 150 centimeters of rain. These storms also cause high waves and ocean surges. A surge is a continuous movement of water that may reach as high as six meters or more. The water strikes low coastal areas. Surges are commonly responsible for about 90 percent of all deaths from ocean storms. The National Hurricane Center in Miami keeps close watch on severe storms. It works with government officials and with radio and television stations to keep people informed. Experts believe this early warning system has helped reduce deaths from ocean storms in recent years.Studies have found that some people do not leave a storm-threatened area because they have no transportation or money for transportation. Another reason is that they fear their property will be damaged by other people, if not by the storm. Yet another reason is that people do not want to leave their farm animals or pets.Weather experts use computer programs to create models that show where a storm might go. Scientists collect the information with satellites, weather balloons and devices floating in the oceans. They use the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale to measure the intensity of storms based on wind speed. This provides an idea of the amount of coastal flooding and property damage that might be expected.66. Which of the following is not the contributor to ocean storms’ formation?A. movements of warm and cold airB. different atmospheric pressureC. winds blowing in a huge circleD. thick clouds and heavy rains67. It can be inferred from the passage that __________.A. the strongest, fastest winds of a hurricane blow is the storm eyeB. people died from ocean storms mainly because of surgesC. some storms cause high waves but not ocean surgesD. ocean storms have nothing to do with atmospheric pressure68. Which of the following may not be the reason why people do not . Sleave a storm-threatened area?A. They haven’t been warned at all.B. They have no access to vehicles.C. They are concerned about their possessions.D. They can’t bear deserting the domestic animals.69. Scientists use the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale mainly to __________.A. show where the storm might goB. measure the property damageC. know how strong the storm isD. control the costal flooding(B)Mobile Phone Sterilizer ManualAbout Mobile Phone Sterilizer:Do you know bacteria on the phone is more than that on the toilet seat cover, toilet door handle, sole and shopping malls counters? The passage is probably __________.A. an advertisementB. a newspaper articleC. a science reportD. an instruction for a product(C)Economic globalization may have various strong impacts on different world cultures. Populations may mimic the international flow of capital and labor markets in the form of immigration and the merger of cultures. Foreign resources and economic measures may impact different native cultures and may cause assimilation of a native people.Researchers are now studying the effects of economic globalization on the youth in various world populations such as Arab, South American, South East-Asian, Caribbean, and African populations. As these populations are exposed to the English language, computers, western music, and North American culture, changes are being noted in shrinking family size, immigration to larger cities, more casual dating practices, and gender roles are transformed.Yu Xintian wrote in a cultural impact study that there were two contrary trends in culture due to economic globalization. Xintian argues that culture and industry not only flows from the west while affecting people, but he says there is also a cultural nationalization or an effect of localization that wishes to promote and protect individual cultures. He also points out that economic globalization began after WWII, whereas internationalization began over a century ago and is something completely different.George Ritzer wrote about the McDonaldization of society and how fast food businesses spread throughout the United States and the rest of the world, forcing world populations to adopt fast food culture. In this book, Ritzer also writes about how other businesses have copied the McDonalds Corporation's business model for expansion and influence. In 2006, 233 of 280 or over 80% of the new McDonalds opened were overseas. In 2007, Japan had 2,828 McDonalds locations and serves as just one example of the globalized effect of international corporations. The Body Shop, a British ecologically conscious cosmetic company, represents the process of McDonaldization working in all directions. Various countries export their own versions of McDonaldization but have the same influences in standardizing world culture.Global media news companies export information through news, radio, and internet. This creates a mostly one-way flow of information, and exposure of mostly western products and values. Companies like CNN, Reuters, and the BBC dominate the global airwaves while having a particular western point of view. Other media news companies such as Al Jazeera may offer a different point of view, but have a far smaller audience and thus effect fewer people in influence.74. In paragraph 1, the underlined word “mimic” probably means __________.A. impactB. imitateC. changeD. represent75. According to paragraph 2 and paragraph 3, it can be inferred that __________.A. McDonald’s business models has influenced other businessesB. internationalization followed economic globalizationC. economic globalization promotes and protects individual culturesD. the Body Shop differs from McDonald’s in standardizing world culture76. Which of the following can be concluded from the passage?A. The youth in Arab, South America tend to have bigger family size.B. Al Jazeera is one of the companies that dominate the global airwaves.C. Economic globalization has strong impacts on Global media news.D. Al Jazeera may have a particular western point of view.77. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. Effects of Cultural InternationalizationB. Effects of Global Media News CompaniesC. Impact of McDonaldization on World EconomyD. Impact of Economic Globalization on World EconomySection CThe purpose of ecotourism is to engage tourists in low impact, non-consumptive environments in order to maintain species, habitats and cultures as well as further the local economy. While some ecotourism projects can support such claims, many have failed to achieve the intended goals. It is sometimes overlooked that although ecotourism is meant for small groups, even a modest increase in population, however temporary, puts extra pressure on the local environment. Although ecotourists claim to be environmentally concerned, they rarely acknowledge how their routine life like eating, drinking or even toilet using are all part of threats to local ecological systems.” Nor do ecotourists recognize even harmless-sounding activities such as nature hikes can be ecologically destructive. In the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, ecotourists have worn down the marked trails and created alternate routes, contributing to soil erosion, and plant damage. In some cases, local people contribute to the environmental degradation. Since most forms of ecotourism are owned by foreign investors and corporations, few benefits are provided to local communities, and only a limited number of local people are employed in the economy. The lack of economic opportunities for local people obliges them to degrade the environment as a means of life earning. The presence of ecotourists, thus, encourages the development of destructive markets in wildlife souvenirs, such as the sale of coral trinkets on tropical islands and animal products in Asia.Generally, ecotourism has been developed with virtually no controls. While governments are typically entrusted with the administration and enforcement of environmental protection, they often lack the capability to manage ecotourism sites effectively. The regulations may be vaguely defined, hard to enforce, and uncertain in effectiveness. Management by private ecotourism companies offers an alternative, but it is believed that such companies have more desire for self-interests, which indicates this practice is not economically feasible. When will the trend of ecotourism towards commercialization end?(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 10 WORDS)78. Ecotourism hasn’t achieved satisfactory results because many projects can’t reach the intended goal of _______________.79. Ecotourists may not realize their problem because it is _______________ that potentially cause damage to the local ecological environment.80. How do some local people in ecotourist areas earn their living?81. In what aspects should governments improve their management to bring ecotourism under control?Translation1. 旅游业的激烈竞争使得去海南旅游的游客数量逐年下降。

Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.Text 1Nisaburo and Hiroko Ohata are unlike most Japanese couples their age.Sure,Hiroko,58,is worried about her husband’s high blood pressure, while Nisaburo,60,promises his wife that if she loses 18 pounds they’ll take a trip abroad. What, makes the Ohatas different is how they met, through a matchmaking organization for single seniors. “On the second date, he asked if I wanted to meet his family, ”says Hiroko.”I took that as a proposal.”A little rushed, perhaps, but 17 years after his wife’s death, Nisaburo knew he’d found a new wife. The couple just celebrated four years of marital happiness last month. In the past, people like Nisaburo and Hiroko might have chosen to live out their lives alone. But as Japan’s society ages, attitudes about love and remarriage late in life are changing. In 2006, According to government data, three times more men and nearly five times more women in their 60s and 70s married for at least the second time, compared with 20 years before.Granted, change is slow. For this silver-haired population, the concept of “dating”is still masked by the term ocha nomi tomodachi (friends having tea together). And older people often need help meeting prospective mates. That’s where specialized matchmaking services such as Ai Senior –“Love Senior”—come in. When Shunichi Ikeda started the online service three years ago, he was surprised by how many visits he was getting from people in their 60s.Ikeda says that his clients have an “American perspective” about the dating scene. And their children are often very supportive, sometimes being the ones to register parents.”More older people are realizing that life is supposed to be enjoyable—not lonely,” says Ikeda. About 17% of the matchmaking clients in Japan are over 50 years old, according to Ai Senior, and seniors ‘ market share has more than doubled over the past three years.“For older, single men, even doing laundry or cooking is difficult, “say Ikeda.”They want to live with a woman. Likewise, is can be boring for women living alone. They want to provide for someone.”46. Live a longer lifeB. solve financial problemsC. make their life enjoyableD. support their children togetherText 2When you become a parent, much of your focus shifts from your own future to your kids’future. But one of the most effective way to help your children learn to dream big is to ensure that your own dreams don’t get pushed aside by everyday demands. Our everyday experiences provide learning opportunities. When you tap into them, you create a lifelong learning habit that will always keep you growing. Even your most disappointing experiences can be turned into breakthroughs.Every dream begins in the imagination, Take a few minutes to sit down with a notebook and think about where you would like to be in 20 years. Write down details about all aspects of your ideal life. Feel free to imagine. Don’t worry about whether you know how to get there now—you have 20 years to figure that out. You can also start by picking a year in the future and making a collection of things you’d like in your life by then. Check in on it from time to time to see where you’ve made progress. We’re often encouraged to work on our weaknesses, but working on your strengths is easier and creates better results. For help of identifying them, ask some friends, or colleagues to write down what they most appreciate about you. They‘ll enjoy doing this, and you’ll feel great when you read the responses. Once you know your strengths, you can put them to work to help you achieve your dreams.Confidence is the foundation for all your other abilities.”Progress, not perfection” is a great saying to keep your confidence high. Every night, write down five achievements that happened that day. Big or small, it doesn’t matter. If proper, add ideas for further progress and actions you can take to get started.Find ways to add what you love to do to your life now. This will give you more energy and keep you connected with your bigger dreams. Making a list of old hobbies is a great way to restore your old passions. The writer thinks that one can hold fast to his dream by ___________A. listing the details of his ideal lifeB. improving some of his old hobbiesC. adding new ideas to his old dreamsD. energizing himself with old passionsText 3Commercial classical music radio in North America has changed, dramatically over the past decade. The number of stations has shrunk very rapidly -----many operators dropped the format in favor of something more profitable. Like pop or rock, with their crazy youthful audience. But the availability of satellite radio, Internet streaming and digital technologies has introduced new options for classical fans.In the city of Toronto, a familiar media player entered the tray last year: Moses Znaimer, 65, the famous brave television pioneer who was the driving force behind Toronto’s CITY-TV. Eleven months ago, he took ownership of Classical 96.3 FM, Canada’s first and largest commercial classical station, which “re-launched”this month with some new on-air hosts, a totally new schedule, and more attention to singing art and less to full-length symphonies. The popular station airs selections (usually no more than 10 to 15 minutes long) of greatest hits classical works,24 hours a day. This usually means single movements of larger works and other pieces with commercial ads in between. The station may never be the preferred destination of highbrow classical fans, who seek full-length symphonies and operas. But this doesn’t seem to trouble Znaimer , who says of his main competitor, CBC Radio Two:”They play classical, and they do it well when they do it, but they don’t do it all the time, and they’re doing it less and less. ”Marilyn Gilbert, a Toronto artist manager, also makes a comparison to Canada’s national broadcaster when she praises Znaimer’s station:”Classical 96.3 FM is very important for the community and the country, especially in view of the changes that are going on at CBC”Znaimer is best known for his influential work in television, but he was also one of the creators of Cross Country Checkup, the longest-running show on CBC Radio. Today he calls Classical 96.3 FM “arguably the most successful of all classical music stations on the continent. At about 800,000 listeners per week, we are larger even than the New York Times classical station [WQXR-FM]”And under his excellent and creative leadership, the sound of the station has become livelier.56. Many operators have dropped commercial classical radio in order to__________.A. make more profitsB. promote pop musicC. use new technologyD. attracts classical fans57. From the text we learn that Moses Znaimer wanted to __________.A. consolidate his position at Classical 96.3 FMB. acquaint classical fans with some new radio stationsC. helps expand Toronto’s CITY-TV into a bigger businessD. makes Classical 96.3 FM more satisfying to classical fans58. It can be inferred that Classical 96.3 FM makes money by _________.A. attracting and broadcasting commercialsB. showing carefully selected programsC. competing with CBC Radio TwoD. pleasing highbrow classical fans59. Marilyn Gilbert believes Classical 96.3 FM__________.A. encourages people to learn classical musicB. introduces a new idea to broadcasting reformc. matters a lot to the community and the countryD. causes CBC to change its way of program arrangement60. The success of Classical 96.3 FM lies in the fact that____________A. it has reformed its traditional program styleB. it is more diverse than WQXR-FM in New YorkC. it has attracted audiences of different age groupsD. it is the biggest broadcasting station on the continentPart BRead the texts from a magazine in which five people voice their different opinions responding to an article on the issue of social networking. For questions 61 to 65,match the name of each person(61 to 65)to one of the statements (A to G)given below. Mark your answers on your NNSWER SHEET.Laura:I think that I have to agree with you. The idea to surround yourself with good and successful people still rings true. The electronic age may aid contact and communication .However, it does not substitute for looking someone in the eye. One has to have that person-to-person feel to instinctively grasp inner character. I’m sure that a combination of the two types of interaction will lend flavor to the future.Mike:I naturally tend to prefer face-to-face relationship building. However, having friends and business acquaintances all over the world, I find that tools such as LinkedIn are quite useful. Both enable me to maintain old connections and make new connections with people I find I have something in common with. Learning how to use these vehicles is the key. I think we are presently in the process of doing just that.Nick:Just like what you have already mentioned, there is obviously a big difference between how people meet and interact on the net and in real world. What the network world offers is a more relaxed, fun, expressive place to be. I like social networking particularly because it offers me a chance to make a lot of friends. That social networking sites do not build long-lasting relationships is just a misconception.Linda:It is all about a combination of various networking sites, and, if you want to do business, just a few e-mail exchanges. That’s how I get to know my clients. Face-to-face networking is not always possible for me. I have clients around the globe, 99% of whom I’ve never met in person. People who oppose social-networking sites don’t understand the real changes that have taken place in the last decade.Helen:Sure enough, social networks are used to reconnect with friends. But they are also a tool for getting your business recognized. They are great places to place ads or comments about your business, because they are open to the public to view. It can be used as a way to network with would be consumers. It is a perfect way to promote your business to the widest range of people globally. Now match the name of each person (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement.Note: there are two extra statements.Statements61. Laura A. I do not think that online friendships are short-lived.62. Mike B. Networking can make your companies better known63. Nick C. I doubt if people could use networking vehicles properly64. Linda D. To benefit from networking, you should learn how to use it65. Helen E. To understand people better, you have to meet them in person.F. Social networking reflects the new demands of the changing timeG. In my opinion, networking has more disadvantages than advantages. Writting。
Time to cool it1 REFRIGERATORS are the epitome of clunky technology: solid, reliable and justa little bit dull. They have not changed much over the past century, but then they have not needed to. They are based on a robust and effective idea--draw heat from the thing you want to cool by evaporating a liquid next to it, and then dump that heat by pumping the vapour elsewhere and condensing it. This method of pumping heat from one place to another served mankind well when refrigerators' main jobs were preserving food and, as air conditioners, cooling buildings. Today's high-tech world, however, demands high-tech refrigeration. Heat pumps are no longer up to the job. The search is on for something to replace them.2 One set of candidates are known as paraelectric materials. These act like batteries when they undergo a temperature change: attach electrodes to them and they generate a current. This effect is used in infra-red cameras. An array of tiny pieces of paraelectric material can sense the heat radiated by, for example, a person, and the pattern of the array's electrical outputs can then be used to construct an image. But until recently no one had bothered much with the inverse of this process. That inverse exists, however. Apply an appropriate current to a paraelectric material and it will cool down.3 Someone who is looking at this inverse effect is Alex Mischenko, of Cambridge University. Using commercially available paraelectric film, he and his colleagues have generated temperature drops five times bigger than any previously recorded. That may be enough to change the phenomenon from a laboratory curiosity to something with commercial applications.4 As to what those applications might be, Dr Mischenko is still a little hazy. He has, nevertheless, set up a company to pursue them. He foresees putting his discovery to use in more efficient domestic fridges and air conditioners. The real money, though, may be in cooling computers.5 Gadgets containing microprocessors have been getting hotter for a long time. One consequence of Moore's Law, which describes the doubling of the number oftransistors on a chip every 18 months, is that the amount of heat produced doubles as well. In fact, it more than doubles, because besides increasing in number, the components are getting faster. Heat is released every time a logical operation is performed inside a microprocessor, so the faster the processor is, the more heat it generates. Doubling the frequency quadruples the heat output. And the frequency has doubled a lot. The first Pentium chips sold by Dr Moore's company,Intel, in 1993, ran at 60m cycles a second. The Pentium 4--the last "single-core" desktop processor--clocked up 3.2 billion cycles a second.6 Disposing of this heat is a big obstruction to further miniaturisation and higher speeds. The innards of a desktop computer commonly hit 80℃. At 85℃, they stop working. Tweaking the processor's heat sinks (copper or aluminium boxes designed to radiate heat away) has reached its limit. So has tweaking the fans that circulate air over those heat sinks. And the idea of shifting from single-core processors to systems that divided processing power between first two, and then four, subunits, in order to spread the thermal load, also seems to have the end of the road in sight.7 One way out of this may be a second curious physical phenomenon, the thermoelectric effect. Like paraelectric materials, this generates electricity from a heat source and produces cooling from an electrical source. Unlike paraelectrics, a significant body of researchers is already working on it.8 The trick to a good thermoelectric material is a crystal structure in which electrons can flow freely, but the path of phonons--heat-carrying vibrations that are larger than electrons--is constantly interrupted. In practice, this trick is hard to pull off, and thermoelectric materials are thus less efficient than paraelectric ones (or, at least, than those examined by Dr Mischenko). Nevertheless,Rama Venkatasubramanian, of Nextreme Thermal Solutions in North Carolina, claims to have made thermoelectric refrigerators that can sit on the back of computer chips and cool hotspots by 10℃. Ali Shakouri, of the University of California, Santa Cruz, says his are even smaller--so small that they can go inside the chip.9 The last word in computer cooling, though, may go to a system even less techy than a heat pump--a miniature version of a car radiator. Last year Apple launched a personal computer that is cooled by liquid that is pumped through little channels in the processor, and thence to a radiator, where it gives up its heat to the atmosphere. To improve on this, IBM's research laboratory in Zurich is experimenting with tiny jets that stir the liquid up and thus make sure all of it eventually touches the outside of the channel--the part where the heat exchange takes place. In the future, therefore, a combination of microchannels and either thermoelectrics or paraelectrics might cool computers. The old, as it were, hand in hand with the new.Questions 1-5 Complete each of the following statements with the scientist or company name from the box below.Write the appropriate letters A-F in boxes 1-5 on your answer sheet.A. Paraelectric materials can generate a current when electrodes are attached to them.7. Dr. Mischenko has successfully applied his laboratory discovery to manufacturing more efficient referigerators.8. Doubling the frequency of logical operations inside a microprocessor doubles the heat output.9. IBM will achieve better computer cooling by combining microchannels with paraelectrics.Question 10 Choose the appropriate letters A-D and write them in box 10 on your answer sheet.10. Which method of disposing heat in computers may have a bright prospect?A. Tweaking the processors?heat sinks.B. Tweaking the fans that circulate air over the processor抯 heat sinks.C. Shifting from single-core processors to systems of subunits.D. None of the above.Questions 11-14 Complete the notes below.Choose one suitable word from the Reading Passage above for each answer.Write your answers in boxes 11-14 on your answer sheet.Traditional refrigerators use...11...pumps to drop temperature. At present, scientists are searching for other methods to produce refrigeration, especially in computer microprocessors....12...materials have been tried to generate temperature drops five times bigger than any previously recorded. ...13...effect has also been adopted by many researchers to cool hotspots in computers. A miniature version of a car ...14... may also be a system to realize ideal computer cooling in the future.Key and Explanations:1. DSee Paragraph 3: ...Alex Mischenko, of Cambridge University. Using commercially available paraelectric film, he and his colleagues have generated temperature drops...2. CSee Paragraph 5: The first Pentium chips sold by Dr Moore's company, Intel,in 1993, ran at 60m cycles a second.3. FSee Paragraph 8: ...Rama Venkatasubramanian, of Nextreme Thermal Solutions in North Carolina, claims to have made thermoelectric refrigerators that can sit on the back of computer chips and cool hotspots by 10℃.See Paragraph 8: Ali Shakouri, of the University of California, Santa Cruz, says his are even smaller梥o small that they can go inside the chip.5. BSee Paragraph 9: To improve on this, IBM's research laboratory in Zurich is experimenting with tiny jets that stir the liquid up and thus make sure all of it eventually touches the outside of the channel--the part where the heat exchange takes place.6. TRUESee Paragraph 2: ...paraelectric materials. These act like batteries when they undergo a temperature change: attach electrodes to them and they generate a current.7. FALSESee Paragraph 3 (That may be enough to change the phenomenon from a laboratory curiosity to something with commercial applications. ) and Paragraph 4 (As to what those applications might be, Dr Mischenko is still a little hazy. He has, nevertheless, set up a company to pursue them. He foresees putting his discovery to use in more efficient domestic fridges?8. FALSESee Paragraph 5: Heat is released every time a logical operation is performed inside a microprocessor, so the faster the processor is, the more heat it generates. Doubling the frequency quadruples the heat output.9. NOT GIVENSee Paragraph 9: In the future, therefore, a combination of microchannels and either thermoelectrics or paraelectrics might cool computers.See Paragraph 6: Tweaking the processor's heat sinks ?has reached its limit. So has tweaking the fans that circulate air over those heat sinks. And the idea of shifting from single-core processors to systems?also seems to have the end of the road in sight.11. heatSee Paragraph 1: Today's high-tech world, however, demands high-tech refrigeration. Heat pumps are no longer up to the job. The search is on for something to replace them.12. paraelectricSee Paragraph 3: Using commercially available paraelectric film, he and his colleagues have generated temperature drops five times bigger than any previously recorded.13. thermoelectricSee Paragraph 7: ...the thermoelectric effect. Like paraelectric materials, this generates electricity from a heat source and produces cooling from an electrical source. Unlike paraelectrics, a significant body of researchers is already working on it.14. radiatorSee Paragraph 9: The last word in computer cooling, though, may go to a system even less techy than a heat pump--a miniature version of a car radiator.。
