I prefer food just taken out from the freezer.Fruit, candies, nuts, chocolate, cake with buttercream frosting(糖霜 ), even peas, all of themtaste delicious when frozen. In fact, I often eat them that way.I was a kid when I picked up the habit. In my family, lots of things were thrown into the freezer— finally, two freezers — to prevent them from going bad. Among them were some of the candiesmy sisters and I had collected on Halloween. If we eat when they are still warm, we'll find ourselves taking the cookies more than we should. It's better if we can put them into the freezer and wait. That way we'll eat less and enjoy themmore because they are hard and chewing becomes a slower, more patient effort. That's the pointabout frozen buttercream frosting. Put it in your mouth at room temperature, and it's gone very quickly. But when it's frozen, you can enjoy the taste much longer as it melts(融化 ) in your mouth. The freezer treats a lot of fruit kindly. Take frozen grapes for example, I keep a bowl of grapes inmy freezer. They become a little icy, and somehow their sweetness is improved. They are perfectand healthy dessert(点心 ). This is the same with oranges, apples, bananas You might thinkbananas would get superhard- when frozen. Wrong! They become cool, creamy and sweet. If youhave wisely covered some or all of the bananas with melted chocolate before putting them intothe freeze, they will have a double taste. As long as you aren't eating anything that truly has to be hot, go ahead and experiment.A.Fruit should be frozen before one eats it.B.Frozen food is better than hot food.C.The author prefers frozen food.D.Hot food is not healthy.(2)The author began to enjoy frozen food when he _____________.A.was youngB.learned cookingC.got marriedD.got a fever(3)Why does the author NOT advise us to take hot cookies? ()A.The taste.B.Buttercream.C.The cookie.D.Frozen buttercream frosting.(二)Some people really don't like to be left alone with their thoughts. For example, some people takingpart in a new study preferred to receive an electric shock rather than spend 15 minutes alonein a room with nothing to do.“ The human mind wants to engage with the world, even, it appears, ifthat involves pain, ” Timothy Wilson concludes. He is a psychologist who works at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The brains of mammals evolved or changed slowly over generations to watch for dangers andopportunities.“ Only humans evolved the ability to think,” he says.“ Still, people can becuncomfortable controlling their own thoughts.” They maytoguidenotbethosable thoughts in apleasing or comforting direction. And that may help explain the popularity of meditation. It's aprocess in which people learn to control their thoughts and benefit from quiet contemplation沉(思 ).For its new study, Wilson's group recruited (招募 ) 146 college students. The researchers askedeach student to sit alone in a room at their lab without any devices, such as cellphones. Thissolitude lasted for 6 to 15 minutes. Most participants said they not only had trouble concentrating but also found the experience unpleasant. The researchers then asked 44 of these people to sit alone at home, too. Again, the students had the same reaction as they had in the lab. They found the experience very uncomfortable. But here's the shocker— quite literally. The scientists asked 18 men and 24 women to sit quietly and just think about anything. Their quiet, alone time lasted for entire 15 minutes. But in this experiment, the participants could give themselves a painful electric shock if they wished. That shock, though, would not make their participation in the experiment end any earlier. Still, 12 men and 6 women chose to receive a shock, rather than just continue to sit in silence. Psychologist Jonathan Schooler of the University of California, Santa Barbara, did not work on the new study. He says its findings point out how many people find it unpleasant to reflect on issues by themselves. They'd rather suffer pain than bear quiet time alone.(1)The author mentioned mammals in Paragraph 2 to show that __________.A.keeping control of thoughts is very difficultB.thinking is a kind of activity limited to humansC.mammals evolved much more slowly than humansD.mammals had poor awareness of dangers and opportunities(2)The underlined word “solitude” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by __________.A.disappointmentB.lonelinessC.emotionD.worry(3)According to the new study, it's proved that most people __________.A.had no trouble concentratingB.enjoyed the feeling of being busyC.didn't know how to enjoy their lifeD.didn't like being alone and doing nothing(4)How did the scientists like the results of the experiment?()A.Disappointed.B.Relieved.C.Surprised.D.Worried.(5)What's the main idea of the passage?()A.Scientists found humans were not afraid of pain.B.The brains of humans changed slowly over generations.C.Humans prefer spending time with others to staying alone.D.People would choose pain rather than bear quiet time alone.四、任务型阅读(共10 分)Nearly everyone has spent at least one night lying in bed wishing for sleep. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was avegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea.Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess (公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born.36.Which of the following is true of the introduction of tea into Britain?A. The Britons got expensive tea from India.B. Tea reached Britain from Holland.C.The Britons were the first people in Europe who drank tea.D.It was not until the 17th century that the Britons had tea.37.This passage mainly discusses_____________.A.the history of tea drinking in Britain B.how tea became a popular drink in Britain C.how the Britons got the habit of drinking tea D.how tea-time was born 38.Tea became a popular drink in Britain.A.in eighteenth century B.in sixteenth centuryC.in seventeenth century D.in the late seventeenth century 39.People in Europe began to drink tea with milk because.A.it tasted like milkB.it tasted more pleasantC.it became a popular drinkD.Madame de Sevinge was such a lady with great social influence that people tried to copy the way she drank tea40.We may infer from the passage that the habit of drinking tea in Britain was mostly due to the influence of________.A.a famous French lady B.the ancient ChineseC.the upper social class D.people in HollandBIt is natural that children are curious (好奇的) about the world around them. For example, they want to know how their hearts beat. They want to know why the ocean water tastes salty. As children grow up, they become curious about different kinds of things. When they are babies, they are interested in the parts of their bodies and in the smiles of their mothers. They become interested in the physical world around them: the plants, the animals, the sky. Later, they become interested in the things that people have made: wheels, bicycles, cars. And when they are adults, their curiosity continues. Sometimes this curiosity leads to a career (生涯、职业) in science.Scientists spend their lives trying to find out about the world. Those who work with the earth sciences study the earth, the oceans, and the skies. Other scientists who study living things work with the biological sciences. A third group of scientists study the physical sciences, e. g. physics, chemistry .These scientists have already discovered a lot about our world. For example, they tell us why your heart beats fast when you run. They say that when you are quiet, your heart normally beats sixty-five or seventy-five times a minute. Your heart is a pump (泵) that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The blood carries oxygen and nutrition. When you run, your muscles work very hard and use the nutrition that the blood carries to them. The muscles need oxygen, too . So your brain sends a signal to the heart. The signal means that the muscles need more nutrition and oxygen. Then the heart beats fast and sends blood quickly to the muscles. It may beat 90 to 140 times a minute.Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why does the ocean water taste salty” scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into th e ocean. But then we ask , “What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get saltier every year.” Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question. We know a lot about our world, but there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious.41.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A.People are curious in the same way.B.People in different countries are interested in different things.C.Men and women are curious about different things.D.People of different ages are interested in different things42.Scientists who work with the biological sciences study____.A.the earth , the oceans and the sky B.man-made thingsC.plants and animals D.ocean water43.When you run, your muscles need ____.A.more nutrition and oxygen B.more signals C.more salt D.water 44.A rock cracks _____.A.in wet regions B.in dry regionsC.at very high or very low temperatures D.when salty water falls in 45.People are always curious because ____.A.they cannot explain many things B.they know nothing about the worldC.they know little about the world D.they want to be scientists第Ⅱ卷(写作)I. 单词拼写:根据句意及首字母,写出各句中所缺单词的正确形式。

AThe first time I questioned the traditional wisdom on the nature of a healthy diet, it was 40 years ago, and the subject was salt. Researchers found that salt supplementation(补充) was unnecessary after exercise, and this advice was passed on by health reporters. I recalled high school football practices in hot days. Without salt pills, I couldn’t make it through a two-hour practice.Although sports nutritionists have recommended consuming more salt when we sweat hard in physical activity, the message that we should avoid salt at all other times remains strong. And salt is still considered deadly. So why have we been told that salt is so deadly? The advice has always sounded reasonable: Eat more salt, and your body keeps water to maintain a stable concentration of sodium (钠) in your blood. This is why salty food might make us thirsty: We drink more; we keep water. The result can be a temporary increase in blood pressure. The scientific question is whether this temporary phenomenon leads to permanent problems: If we eat too much salt for years, does it cause high blood pressure, and then kill us? It makes sense, but it’s only a hypothesis(假设), which hasn’t been proved but unfortunately accepted as a fact.In reality, eating less salt can worsen health. Decades ago, Italian researchers’ study reported that reducing salt consumption increased the risk of dying early and that reducing sodium to agovernment-recommended “safe upper limit” is actually harmful.Supporters of the eat-less-salt campaign(运动) tend to deal with this opposing evidence (证据) by implying that anyone raising it is a shill(同谋) for the food industry (widely criticized for adding salt to processed foods to improver taste). When several government agencies held a hearing last November to discuss how to ensure Americans eat less salt, anti-salt supporters argued that the latest reports suggesting damage from lower-salt diets should simply be ignored. This attitude, which lacks respect for science, has been held for the anti-salt campaign for decades. Maybe now is the time for it to change.1. The underlined phrase in paragraph 1 refers to the belief that_________.A. people should take in salt after exerciseB. salt intake was needless after physical activityC. salt pills were helpful during football practicesD. a healthy diet does not necessarily include enough salt2. What does the Italian researchers’ study show?A. Eating less salt can harm our health.B. Eating too much salt raises blood pressure.C. We should try to avoid salt on a daily basis.D. We should follow the recommended “safe upper limit”.3. What do the eat-less-salt campaigners do with the opposing evidence?A. They treat it with some respect.B. They report it to the government agencies.C. They do scientific experiments to support it.D. They suggest that the food industry is behind it.BPhysical education, or PE, isn't required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn't offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly "yes".Today many people don't do sports. But as is known to all. doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.High school isn't that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student's studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school. The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity(肥胖). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don't get teens to move around, such as computer games, means many teens don't get their required exercise. PE classes act as a public health measure(措施)to encourage physical activities and help teens have healthy weights. Not doing sports increases teens' hazard of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be prevented by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.According to the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition(PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activities each week improved their academic(学业的)performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.4. According to the PCFSN, doing sportA. means making students choose between sports and studiesB. helps students make good use of all their timeC. means students adjust to their studies betterD. helps students do better in their studies7. What is the text mainly about?A. Why high school students should receive physical education.B. Why some schools consider physical education important.C. How schools can help students love doing sports.D. How high school students can live a better life.CSonja Yokum and Eric Stice, psychologists at Oregon Research Institute in Eugene, recently did a study on eating and enjoyment. They recruited (招募) 135 high school students and calculated each person’s body mass index, or BMI. All participants had healthy BMIs when the study began. The researchers showed pictures of different types of food to the teens as their brains were scanned. Meanwhile, as the teens viewed pictures of a glass of water, they’d get a taste of water. When the milkshake appeared, they got a taste of milkshake. All the while, the scanner kept mapping how their brains responded.Yokum and Stice repeated the tests with the same teens one, two and three years after the first scan. They then focused on two groups of these students. One group had put on weight. Their BMIs increased by at least ten percent from year one to year three. The other had BMIs that changed by two percent or less over that time. The researchers then looked for differences in the brain scans between the two groups. Changes emerged in two areas of the brain. One region processes taste. The other is known as the reward center. At first, the taste center responded strongly in teens who went on to gain weight. That was especially true when they tasted the high-fat milkshakes. But three years later, scans showed the taste center of the brain responded less in these teens. Brains of teens with steady BMIs started off less responsive to fat. But over time they got better at detecting it.Changes emerged in the teens’ reward centers, too. Those whose BMIs later rose started off the study with a strong reward response to tasting high-fat milkshakes. In contrast, teens who maintained a steady BMI throughout initially enjoyed the fattier drinks less. By year three of the study, higher-BMI teens enjoyed the fattier milkshakes much less, while those with steady BMIs enjoyed them far more. The study suggests that the loss of enjoyment might drive people to overeat particularly tasty,high-energy foods to get the same rewarding “kick”, which may contribute to unhealthy eating habits and unhealthy weight gain.8. What were the participants asked to do during the study?A. Look at food pictures and taste the food.B. Select among different types of food.C. Receive three times of brain scans.D. Report their BMIs every month.9. Based on what were the two groups divided?A. The activity of their brains.B. The level of weight gain.C. The state of their health.D. Their eating habits.10. What did the study find out about teens with steady BMIs?A. Their taste centers responded less to fat over time.B. Their taste centers responded strongly to fat at first.C. Their reward centers had a strong response to fat at first.D. Their reward centers got more responsive to fat over time.11. What conclusion can be made from the study?A. The brain’s reward system may be related to unhealthy eating.B. Highly rewarding food is irresistible to most people.C. Lack of satisfaction can result in low BMIs.D. High BMIs always indicate overweight.DIf you have trouble falling asleep, listen up. You might fall asleep 15 minutes earlier and wake up far less during the night if you put on a pair of socks at bedtime. To understand why, you first need to grasp the relationship between core body temperature and sleep. During daylight hours, the human body has an average temperature of 37℃. But your core body temperature drops as much as 1.2℃ over one night's sleep. This gradual decrease is a key part of how we sleep. Put simply, the faster you can lower your core body temperature, the faster you will fall asleep. One way that your body controls its temperature is through blood vessels (血管) in the skin. If your body is too hot, your blood vessels widen, pushing the warmer blood nearer the skin's surface, helping it to cool. If your body is too cold, the opposite happens. Your blood vessels narrow, restricting the flow of blood to the surface. The palms of your feet are one of your body's most efficient heat exchangers, since they are hairless and less protected than other skin surfaces. Researchers have shown that warming the feet before going to sleep using a warm foot bath or by wearing socks promotes blood vessel widening, which in turn lowers the body's core temperature faster than going to sleep with cold, bare feet.Scientists suspect that socked feet have a sleep-benefiting effect on the brain as well. The warm-sensitive neurons (神经元) in the brain become more active when there's a temperature difference between the body's core and the feet. Researchers have found that these neurons become more active as we get sleepy and slow down as we wake up, so that warming up the feet before bedtime may give them an extra drive, making you feel sleepier. In a small study, researchers found that wearing a pair of special “sleeping socks” not only sped up the coming of sleep, but increased overall sleep time by an average of 30 minutes and cut nighttime wakingepisodes in half. If you're worried about becoming too warm, look for socks made of natural fibers.12. In which section of a newspaper can we find this text?A. Lifestyle.B. Trend.C. Opinion.D. Advertisement.13. What change does warm feet bring to the body?A. Slowed brain reaction.B. Narrowed blood vessels.C. Decreased blood pressure.D. Reduced core body temperature.14. How might the brain's warm-sensitive neurons help sleep?A. To help to warm up the feet.B. To speed up temperature growth.C. To bring on sleepiness when activated.D. To slow down the brain's blood flow.15. What is the finding of the small study mentioned in the last paragraph?A. The warmth of socks depends on their material.B. People wearing socks fall asleep 50 percent faster.C. Special socks increase temperature more effectively.D. Sock wearing helps people sleep longer and wake less.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

A trip to Peru had been on my wish list for quite a while. It was finally time for me to visit the country. My first day started in Lima, the capital of Peru. I met with the G Adventures representative(代表)of the tour here. G Adventures is an organization that helps you to connect with other like⁃minded people in small group⁃based travel adventures. They played a big part in helping to make Peru an unforgettable experience for me! In Lima, my representative discussed the plan for my tour, and I also had the chance to explore Lima in my own time, with many activities, including a city tour, show, biking tour, and more.Day two had me taking a flight from Lima to Cusco. Many people visit Cusco for shopping but for me, the main reason for spending a day or two in Cusco was to adapt to the altitude(海拔). As I'd decided to reach the wonder of Machu Picchu, adaptation had become important to avoiding altitude sickness. I was happy to spend a day exploring Cusco. Cusco was once the capital of the Inca Empire. Today, it's famous for its artists, paintings, clothing and traditional instruments. There's something for everyone in this city. The day finally came! Day three had me enjoying a lovely guided visit to Machu Picchu at sunrise. I had free time to explore the city on my own as well as with my guide. There was a lot to take in! I had to stop for a moment and felt the energy of such an ancient city. The history here is unbelievable and I will never forget my time here for as long as I live!is the author's attitude to G Adventures?.. ..did the author stay in Cusco?go shopping. find a local guide.get used to the high altitude. do research on the Inca Empire.did the author feel when traveling around Machu Picchu?of excitement. of luck.in doubt. in regret.is the best title for the text?love of traveling wonderful trip to Peru: the “land of the Incas”: the future of PeruCEvery experience makes us grow—nowhere is this truer than at North Country School (NCS). The NCS experience includes both classroom and experiential learning. Their courses help every child unlock their hidden potential and passions.NCS was eye⁃opening for Sam Shi. He discovered his passion for biology as he learned about the wildlife and ecosystems(生态系统) in the Adirondacks. “The hands⁃on, place⁃based teaching styles were extremely interesting,” he says. “A whole new type of appreciation occurs when you learn about living things while actually being surrounded by them.”NCS students grow and learn effectively thanks to the direct experience they get. Led by talented teachers, they aren't just learning by doing—they're knowing by doing.Shi got a taste of this as early as his first day in the Design and Build class with Larry Robjent. “No NCS class works like your standard, textbook classes,” he says. “Larry laid out our year⁃long project of deconstructing an on⁃campus bridge and building a new one. In this year⁃long project, we actually got to work outside, and with our hands, build something practical. No chance you'd find that anywhere else.”Shi described everything about that class as “special”. He got to be creative. Most importantly, he studied physics and engineering in practical ways. “In the end I got to stand alongside my classmates and admire the product of our efforts, something that would remain a piece of NCS for many years to come,” he shares.Such breakthroughs happen daily at NCS. “The journey of discovering how to trust my abilities is a life lesson that has remained with me and likely alway s will,” says Shi. “The teachers always encouraged me to try new things and to trust myself.”With such courses, it is no wonder NCS students gain confidence, creativity and knowledge. Shi says, “I had no idea how cool this place would be, and certainly di dn't expect my study there to impact my life as obviously as it did and continues to do.”are the courses like at North Country School according to the passage?only focus on experiential learning.can help inspire students' personal growth.are mainly for gifted students.attract many talented teachers.does the underlined word mean in the fourth paragraph?.. apart.up.10.According to Shi, what is the life lesson he has learned from the NCS experience?A.A passion for biology.B.A knowledge of building a bridge.C.A curiosity about new things.D.A sense of self⁃confidence.11.What can we infer from Shi's words in the last paragraph?feels grateful to his school.wouldn't have become what he is now without being educated at NCS.he has learned at NCS will affect him all through his life.time he spent at NCS is worth remembering.DWhen you're sitting in class or behind your desk waiting for the clock to strike a time when you can go home, it is natural that the mind should wander(走神) a bit. It is common for your mind to wander to a holiday destination and even travel the world. What if there is a way that you can travel the world without having to pay any money?A person that managed to make it around the world without spending much was Shantanu Starick. How did he trade off his service?Starick realized that as a photographer he had a service that people would usually be willing to pay money for, but he would instead offer his photography service to anyone who could provide him with food, shelter and transportation. Starick has been traveling for surprising 30 months and has visited countries ranging from the United States to Ecuador. In English⁃speaking countries, trading off service and communicating aren't difficult for Starick. However, in farther areas where there isn't an English⁃speaking person in sight it can be quite difficult. More than anything, locals appreciate(欣赏) the effort behind trying to speak their languages, even if he doesn't exactly sound like a native speaker. You can do it too!Honestly, with a bit of confidence, drive and a skill you can trade, you'll be able to do exactly the same as Starick.Start thinking about what you can do to get around the world without paying money. With our social networks and the connectivity our world has, you can easily connect with and market yourself to people across the world without any effort.12.What is the author's purpose in writing the first paragraph?introduce the topic. describe students in class.give an example for the text. show people's state of mind.13.What does the underlined part “trade off” in Paragraph 2 refer to?.. ..14.In locals' opinion, which of the following is the key for the traveler?skill in trading. confidence in success.determination to travel. effort to speak the local languages.15.What do we know about Shantanu Starick?is a professional traveler.is too poor to afford the travels.has a skill in traveling without paying much money.doesn't speak other languages except English.第二节(共5小题;每小题分,满分分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

ADiet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet... We are surrounded by the word "diet" everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brains to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, and unhealthy food. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale(秤)instead. All we have to do is to recognize and swallow the word "diet" on food labels. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don't have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that the gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggles. The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients. Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and thus prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.1.The first paragraph mainly tells us __________.A.diet products can bring out people's potentialB.people have difficulty in choosing diet productsC.diet products are misleading peopleD.people are fed up with diet products2.One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to __________.A.resist a variety of diet foodsB.hesitate before they enjoy diet foodsC.pay attention to their own eating habitsD.watch their weight rather than their diet3.The purpose of writing this passage is _________.A.to warn people of the side effect of diet productsB.to tell people how to lose weightC.to advise people to eat diet productsD.to introduce some diet productsBFifty-five years ago, I got into my fathers lime-green 1960 Rambler American--a car to take my driver’s exam in Lindenhurst. I crossed my fingers to pray that the start button would work. It did, and my father and I got to the test site on time. The streets seemed quite narrow to me. Although nervous, I was determined to do my best. Parallel-parking was my flaw, and I hoped that my tires would not hit thecurb(路边线).When I was practicing for the test, my father, far from being the best teacher, was rather unpleased with my parallel-parking. His fearful cries could be heard along the streets of Woodward Parkway in South Farmingdale, my hometown, or in the large empty parking lots where I first put my foot to the gas pedal. I felt embarrassed when he said, "Step on the gas! Check your rear-view mirror! Step on the brake!" I was convinced that no one could do all those things at the same time. I had seen the driver’s education films showing bodies were cut off in accidents and came away fairly frighteningly.During my test, I drove cautiously, probably a little too slow, without the benefit of power steering or electronic helpmates. I kept my hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel( 方向盘), checked my mirrors, stopped at stop signs and signaled for turns. I was satisfied with my performance up to that point, but then it was time to parallel-park.Fortunately, the parking area had no curb, just something like a mound of dirt at the edge. I pulled up next to a car, checked my rear-view mirror and began to back inward. Somehow, I nailed it on my first try, lining up right behind the car in front of me. Minutes later, the tester announced I had passed. I knew that my life had changed. I had earned freedom of movement and felt a sense of maturity.1.Which can best replace the underlined word “flaw” in paragraph 1?A.FavouriteB.HabitC.AdvantageD.Weakness2.What can be learned from paragraph 2?A.A terrible accident happened during the practice.B.A quarrel between the author and his father broke out.C.The author was doubtful about his father's direction.D.The author was touched by his father's consideration.3.Where did the author park his car during his test at last?A.Behind a car in lineB.On a mound of dirtC.Over a curb.D.In the street of Woodward Parkway.4.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?A.To show off his achievement with good luck.B.To share his experience of taking his driving test.C.To thank his beloved father for his help.D.To accept the constant changes in his life.CMost of us struggle through the time it takes to get a cup of coffee to our lips once our alarms go off. Luckily, this coffee-making alarm clock could make those few struggling minutes practically disappear. An alarm clock that makes a pot of fresh coffee as soon as you wake up actually exists, and you can buy it right now. Thanks to the Barisieur, your morning time will never be the same. Here's how it works: Before you go to bed, fill the glass container with water and pour ground coffee into the(过滤器). Not a black coffee drinker? Not to worry—special drawers keep your cream cold and store your sugar, too. Then, just set your alarm and go to sleep. This machine will take care of the rest.A few minutes before your alarm goes off next morning, the Barisieur will begin to brew(冲泡) your coffee. And voila! A cup of hot coffee is waiting for you when your alarm rings and you open your eyes. You won't even have to leave your bed.London designer Joshua Renouf designed this invention himself, raising over $ 500, 000 through donations on the Internet. Coffee lovers should act fast and put in a pre-order on the website now, paying just $ 300. Otherwise, you will have to wait until it hits stores and pay $ 420.Owning one of these clocks will be totally worth it. Nothing says "seize the day" quite like waking up to a pot of freshly brewed coffee, after all. Also, the machine isn't limited to making coffee only in the morning. You can go out and return home with a cup of hot coffee waiting for you.1.Why does the author mention the struggle?A.To show making coffee is challenging.B.To show coffee can make us feel better.C.To show the coffee-brewing alarm clock is great.D.To show it is difficult to get up early in the morning.2.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.The Barisieur.B.The morning time.C.A hot cup of coffee.D.The glass container.3.What's the benefit of pre-ordering the clock on the website now?A.You can get one much earlier.B.You can get one at a great discount.C.You can get donations from its designer.D.You may have a chance to meet Joshua Renouf.4.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A.To tell us how to make coffee easily.B.To advertise a new product in a store.C.To recommend a special kind of alarm clock.D.To compare traditional alarm clocks and new ones.DWhen "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was first shown to the public last month, a group of excited animal activists gathered on Hollywood Boulevard. But they weren't there to throw red paint on fur-coat-wearing film stars. Instead, one activist, dressed in a full-body monkey suit, had arrived with a sign praising the filmmakers: "Thanks for not using real(猿)!"The creative team behind "Apes" used motion-capture(动作捕捉)technology to create digitalized animals, spending tens of millions of dollars on technology that records an actor's performance and later processes it with computer graphics to create a final image(图像). In this case, one of a realistic-looking ape.Yet "Apes" is more exception than the rule. In fact, Hollywood has been hot on live animals lately. One nonprofit organization, which monitors the treatment of animals in filmed entertainment, is keeping tabson more than 2,000 productions this year. Already, a number of films, including "Water for Elephants," "The Hangover Part Ⅱ" and "Zookeeper," have drawn the anger of activists who say the creatures actingin them haven't been treated properly. In some cases, it's not so much the treatment of the animals on set in the studio that has activists worried; it's the off-set training and living conditions that are raising concerns. And there are questions about the films made outside the States, which sometimes are not monitored as closely as productions filmed in the States.1.Why did the animal activists gather on Hollywood Boulevard?A.To see famous film stars.B.To oppose wearing fur coats.C.To raise money for animal protection.D.To express thanks to some filmmakers.2.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A.The cost of making "Apes."B.The creation of digitalized apes.C.The publicity about "Apes."D.The performance of real apes.3.What does the underlined phrase "keeping tabs on" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A.Listing completely.B.Directing professionally.C.Promoting successfully.D.Watching carefully.4.What can we infer from the last paragraph about animal actors?A.They may be badly treated.B.They should take further training.C.They could be traded illegally.D.They would lose popularity.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

But she di dn’t stay for a long time. A little before 10 am, she walked over to a van (有篷货车), pulling the doors open and looking at those black boxes, which were the reason why she was there: the dogs. Nina didn’t have dogs growing up. She had a rabbit for a short ti me, but that was all her family had room for in their small apartment in Germany. It wasn’t until she moved to New York City that the wish for raising a dog took root. She visited the adoption (收养) website every day after work, looking for a right dog. And soon she adopted a cute one.Hurricane Sandy hit. Well, a 20-year-old blind skateboarder has demonstrated it is wrong.Known as The Blind Rider, Marcelo Lusardi lost his sight completely two years ago because of his serious illness. He was sad as he couldn’t imagine living without sight. Luckily, his father pushed him harder instead of giving up on him. Finally, Marcelo decided to go to the skate park where he used to play with his friends, and try out new tricks. Only this time, he had to use a cane (手杖) just to find his way to the park, so he thought it was impossible to skate again. After a reunion with his skateboarding friends, with their encouragement Marcelo found the courage to skate again, but learning to skate blind was completely different. He must get used to his environment before skating or performing a trick, and sound helps him a lot as well. With the help of his friends and after learning to use his other senses, Marcelo not only learned to ride the skateboard again but also perform tricks that not many people with perfect sight can do.Marcelo said, “People sometimes have problems and th ink that it is the end of the world, but in the end you can solve these problems. Everything has a solution in life. Look at me. I was skating, and then I went blind. Now I’m skating again — not as well as before, obviously, but I can still do it and leave people with their mouths open.”Marcelo still hopes that one day someone will invent medicine for his illness, and he will get his sight again, but in the meantime, he is making the best of his situation and encouraging people at the same time.8. And it’s true: The country of just 10 million people sends less than 1 percent of its waste to areas of land where waste is buried under the earth. The waste is burned to create electricity and energy to heat homes.Recycling is such a part of the culture that there’s even a shopping centre — the ReTuna — that has only upcycled (升级改造的) and repaired things. The shopping centre lies about 60 miles outside Stockholm in the town of Eskilstuna. There are 14 stores, a restaurant and also a program where interested Swedes can learn how to recycle even more. The shopping centre was created as part of the local recycling center andincludes a drop-off center, so locals can drop off things they no longer need or which need fixing, and pick up things they need — all without ever buying new things. Not only are the people of Eskilstuna recycling more and wasting fewer materials, the center has offered the types of jobs including repair work, management of the shopping centre, retail work in the shops, as well as roles for artists, and teachers (for the classes in repair and upcycling). Looking at t his project, we can start to see how waste doesn’t have to be a trouble or something we pay to deal with. Instead, we can use circular-economy (循环经济) thinking to deal with waste. Rather than the model of take-use-throwaway, the circular-economy model is one where everything we make is part of a circle of resources and energy, just like how the natural world works. There’s great value in our garbage, if only we choose to see it that way. The shopping centre of Eskilstuna already does.12. Why is Sweden mentioned in the first paragraphA. To show it is not a large country.B. To show it buries most of its waste.C. To show it uses electricity to heat home.D. To show it is good at dealing with waste.13. What do we know about the ReTunaA. It creates many job chances.B. It offers the old goods for free.C. It is well-known for its good service.D. It takes up a large space in Eskilstuna.14. What does the author want to tell us in the last but one paragraphA. People can save much by recycling.B. The take-use-throwaway is common in our life.C. Dealing with garbage is a huge problem nowadays.D. The ReTuna is an example of circular-economy model.15. Which of the following could be the best title for the textA. A shopping centre that only sells recycled goodsB. Swedish ways of dealing with daily wasteC. Swedish circular-economy thinkingD. More than 165 people have been killed, while dozens of others remain missing after a record rainfall caused dams(堤坝)to burst and rivers to overflow into towns and streets across western Germany, Belgium, as well as parts of the Netherlands, Switzerland and northern France. In Liège, Belgium’s third-largest city, water from the Meuse River overflowed Thursday evening into parts of the city center, so city officials had to call for the people to move out of the area or go to higher ground.“I’ve never seen anything like this in my 81 years,” said Pierre Fouillen, an old lady who came to her home Friday morning to check the damage. “This may be the worst flooding disaster our country has ever known. ”Dutch soldiers are sent to the southern city of Limburg as rivers are expected to burst their banks. After more than two months’ worth of rain in just 24 hours, officials are preparing for more rain Thursday, but dryer weather is expected by the weekend. In western Germany, the number of deaths rose to 143. They are thought of as “zombie (僵尸) fires”.“Zombie fires” usually sleep underground in winter. Covered by snow, they smoke through the cold. Fueled by carbon-rich peat (泥炭) and soil in the North, most of these hidden fires spread slowly for less than 500 meters during the winter. When spring comes, the flames (火焰) of the fires appear near sites that they burned in winter, and they turn to burning fresh fuels around. This may happen well before the traditional fire season in the far North.“Zombie fires” had been known mostly from firefighters’ stories. Few scientists studied them until details in some satellite images attracted one research team.Rebecca Scholten, a member of the team, studies earth systems at Vrije University Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Her team noticed an unusual thing. “New fires have been starting very close to the former years’ fires in recent years, and we wonder how often the fires might survive the winter,” Scholten explains. These “zombie fires” are rarely seen before, according to a new study from Nature. But in recent years, they are becoming more common, the study warns. It is believed that the “zombie fires” are even on the road of being a threat. Forests in the far North are warming faster than the globe’s average (平均数). Scholten says, “We’re seeing more hot summers and more large fires and strong burning. That could set the stage for the fires to become a bigger problem,” she worries. And the region’s soils hold a lot of carbon—maybe twice as much as earth’s atmosphere. More fires here could give off huge amounts of greenhouse gases. That would drive a cycle of more warming and even higher risk of fires.8.What do we know about the “zombies fires” in the far North?A.They will completely die out in winter.B.Carbon-rich peat helps them burn slowly in winter.C.They often happen after the traditional fire season.D.Their flames can only appear in spring.9.What can we infer from Scholten’s words in paragraph 3?A.“Zombie fires” appear earlier than the years before.B.“Zombie fires” happen far from former years’ fires.C.“Zombie fires” happen more frequently than before.D.“Zombie fires” appear in different shapes every year.10.What was a cause of being a threat for the “zombie fires”?A.The global warming is slowing down.B.The hot summers are less and less seen.C.The area’s soils are short of carbon.D.More greenhouse gases are given off.11.What can be the best title for the text?A.Where Are “Zombie Fires” From?B.Are “Zombie Fires” Frightening?C.Pay Attention To “Zombie Fires”!D.“Zombie Fires” Are Caused By Humans!D(2022·江西·临川一中高一阶段练习)Check out our tsunami facts and learn some interesting information related to these great walls of water that can cause so much destruction. Find out what causes tsunamis and read about some notable recent examples of tsunamis that have occurred around the globe.Tsunamis are huge waves of water that are usually caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. As a tsunami approaches the shore, water may move back from the coast. If it is shallow enough, the water may be pulled back hundreds of meters. If you are in the area, observing this is a good indication that a tsunami is on the way.Regions in tsunami danger zones often have warning systems in place to give people as much time to evacuate as possible. When tsunamis hit shallow water (often near the coast), they slow down but increase in height. An earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia in December 2004 caused a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people in 14 countries. In March 2011, the Tohoku earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan caused a tsunami that was a major factor in the death of over 15,000 people. The tsunami waves created by the Tohoku earthquake reached heights of over 40 metres (131 feet) in mine areas, wiping out coastal towns and causing a number of nuclear accidents. The Japanese word “tsunami” literally means “harbour wave”. Tsunamis are sometimes referred to as tidal waves but this term has fallen out of favour because tsunamis are not related to tides.12.Which of the following shows a tsunami is coming soon?A.The water near the shore is pulled back.B.The water marches towards the coast.C.An earthquake takes place.D.The water near the shore is very shallow.13.In the Tohoku earthquake, over 15,000 people died mainly because of ________. For example, the tomato is a kind of very delicious vegetable. It is one of useful plants that can be prepared in many ways. It has rich nutrition and vitamin in it. But in the 18th century, Americans never ate tomatoes. They grew them in their gardens because tomato plants are so pretty. But they thought the vegetable was poisonous (有毒的). They called tomatoes “poison apples.”President Thomas Jefferson, however, knew that tomatoes were good to eat. He was a learned man. He had been to Paris, where he learned to love the taste of tomatoes. He grew many kinds of tomatoes in his garden. The President taught his cook a way for a cream of tomato soup. This beautiful pink soup was served at the President’s party. The guests thought the soup tasted really good. They never thought their president would serve his honored guests poison apples. Jefferson never spoke to his honored (忠实的) guests about the fact.1. After you read the passage, which of the following do you think is trueA. All of the guests thought the soup which was prepared by the President’s cook was nice.C. All of the guests thought the taste of the beautiful pink soup was nice.D. None of the guests knew that their president would serve his honored guests poison apples.BIn modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity, others say that competition is bad, that it sets one person against another and that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winners and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost , that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(缓解) can we discover a new meaning in c ompetition.6. What does this passage mainly talk aboutA. Competition helps to set up self-respect.B. Opinions about competition are different among people.》C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.7. Why do some people favor competition according to the passageA. It pushes society forward.B. It builds up a sense of duty.C. It improves personal abilities.D. It encourages individual efforts.8. The underlined phrase “ the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means ______.A. those who try their best to winB. those who value competition most highlyC. those who are against competition most stronglyD. those who rely on others most for success9. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to failA. One’s worth l ies in his performance compared with others.B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts.C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.:10. Which point of view may the author agree toA. Every effort should be paid back.B. Competition should be encouraged.C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.CDo you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self-respect The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as “honor” help you creat e this life of good feelings. Here’s an example to show how honorable actions creat e happiness.Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk’s mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul. Then, what is it to do with our sense of happinessIn the first case, where we don’t te ll the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk’s attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.【There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable thoughts that lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it’s easy to think and act honorably again when we’re happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it’s started, it’s easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.11. According to the passage, the po sitive action in the example contributes to our _____.A. self-respectB. financial rewardsC. advertising abilityD. friendly relationship12. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to _____.A. lyingB. stealingC. cheatingD. advertising13. The phrase “bringing the error to the clerk’s attention” (in ) means ______.A. telling the truth to the clerkB. offering advice to the clerkC. asking the clerk to be more attentiveD. reminding the clerk of the charged item14. How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake|A. We’ll be very excitedB. We’ll feel unfortunate.C. We’ll have a sense of honorD. We’ll feel sorry for the clerk15. Which of the following can be the best title of this passageA. How to Live TruthfullyB. Importance of PeacefulnessC. Ways of Gaining Self-respectD. Happiness through Honorable Actions.八、书面表达(满分15 分)一家叫People’s Health Paper 的报纸来信约你撰写一篇有关健康的文章准备刊登在该报纸上,内容可以涉及健康与饮食习惯、食品、生活习惯的关系等。
