AWhen you are learning a foreign language, one of the hardest things to grasp is how and when to use colloquial idioms (口语习语) and expressions. Often used in both spoken and written la nguage, these idioms are very important. Using one of these phrases correctly when speaking or writing to an English spea ker is very impressive. Here are some wonderful British idiom s. Use them wisely!1. When pigs fly! This expression is one of my favorites and I use it all the time. For example, “I will forgive him when pigs fly!”“When do you think you will get a gym me mbership, Louise?”“When pigs fly!”2. A penny for your thoughts? This question is used in a situation where someone appears t houghtful or is very quiet seeming lost in thought. It’s the bee’s knees. This expression means that something is of excellence or of v ery high quality. For example, “Try this chocolate. It’s the bee’s knees.”4. To feel a bit under the weather.I use this expression in many different situations but most use it to refer to feeling ill, or unwell. You would not use this phras e if you were feeling extremely unwell. It is only for those time s when you are feeling a little ill, or suffering from something slightly like a cold or a cough. So far Izzard has raised more than £200,000.Fighting blisters (水疱) that have caused the nails on his smaller toes to fall off, he ran up The Mall and into Trafalgar Square, where he had started 7.5 weeks ago. In finishing he proved what many thought was an impossible task: that a 47-year-old comedian with no sporting experience could do something a top athlete might find difficult.4 / 11After only six weeks’ training he started out on a journey that would take him to every corner of the British Isles. “The first three weeks were the hardest,” he said. Someone with so little training. I find it extraordinary that he has done it.”Asked what he had gained, Izzard said “I know now I can do that. Sport is one of those words that stopped being part of my life when I was about 14. (共20小题,每小题2 分,共40分)ATraveling without a map in different countries, I find out about different ways of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”Foreign tourists are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don’t have name signs. In Japan, people use landmarks (地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”People in Los Angeles, the US, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure distance by time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?”you ask. “Oh,”they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.”You don’t understand completely, “Yes, but how many miles away is it, please?”To this question you won’t get an answer, becaus e most probably they don’t know it themselves.People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language. Instead, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.”Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happens in the situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.”But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.”People there believe that “I don’t”is impolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan! However, one thing will help you everywhere in the world. It’s body language.1. Which of the following is probably an example of Japanese directions?A.“The post office is at Street Kamira.”B.“Turn right at the hospital and go past a school.”C.“The post office is about five minutes from here.”D.“Go south two miles. Turn west and then go another mile.”2. Why don’t people in Los Angeles give directions in miles?A.They prefer to lead you the way.B.They prefer to use body language.C.They often have no idea of distance measured by miles.D.They use landmarks in their directions instead of distance.3 .How do Greeks give directions?ing street names.ing landmarks.C.Leading people the way.D.Giving people a wrong direction.4. According to the last paragraph, we can learn that_____________________.A.people in Yucatan always give wrong directionsB.people in Mexico know streets’name wellC.body language makes you get lost in YucatanD.people in Mexico prefer to use body languageBThere are many useful suggestions that can help one to improve English. Here are some of them to increase one’s English language vocabulary.Learning English vocabulary is about much more than just learning the right words. It is based on understanding important words and expressions.Learning a word will not help very much if you quickly forget it. Researches show that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions(重复) to really make a word part of your vocabulary. Since most words are learned from how they are used in context (上下文), the more words one is shown, the better vocabulary one will have. Keep a piece of paper close to you. When you read, pay close attention to the word you do not know, write the word down and try to understand its meaning from the context. Then look up the word in a dictionary.Remember that if you do not use English words that you have just learned in conversation or writing, you will forget them very quickly. So the best way to learn new words effectively is just by trying to use them in conversation and writing. Remember also that practice is the key to fluent spoken English.Building vocabulary is a life-long task. But Venice is such a city.Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn’t built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands. Seawater is everywhere around the city.Even so, travel isn’t difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go. People in Venice move from place to place by boat.Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem. Sometimes tourists will have such strange experiences. One moment they walk across the Rialto Bridge, and there’s nothing special. But when they come back to the bridge an hour later, it’s underwater and everyone is wearing rain shoes.Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) melt (融化). Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower. The Italian government has asked some of Italy’s biggest companies to build the MOST project, which was planned to be build under the seawater to stop the rising water. Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for oneshort period about eight hours later. In many parts of the world, people take naps (小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about mak ing the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.13.Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon?A.Because it’s hot in summer.B.Because you eat too much for lunch.C.Because you didn’t have a good sleep last night.D.Because your body temperature goes down at that time.14.What can we learn about “naps”accordin g to the last paragraph?A.All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.B.Doctors need to take naps while employe rs don’t.C.Taking naps regularly is beneficial to people’s health.D.If you take naps every day, you’ll never suffer from heart disease.15. When do you usually feel sleepy after getting up?A.Five hours later.B.Six hours later.C.Seven hours later.D.Eight hours later.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Even before I opened my mouth, he was shaking his head.It was September 1957, and my family had just arrived in California. My father only got work two or three days a week. Our poor savings were gone, and as the eldest boy of the family, I was the only one able to help.“let me work the rest of the week, and if you don’t like the way I do the job, don’t pay me.”I said. The tall man stared at me, then nodded. At Mort’s, I worked very hard. Near the end of the day he called me up to him. “How much did that card at school say this job paid? "he asked. “One dollar an hour. " I whispered. Actually I was willing to take less.“That’s not enough for someone who works as hard as you, "Mort said. “You start at £ 1.25.”Over the next few weeks I learned a lot about Mort. Our store was closed on Sundays, so every Saturday evening Mort urged me to take home the leftover soup. It was a meal in itself, a treat for my struggling family. One Saturday after work. I was about to step in my house when I saw a large man in my father's chair. He was swearing at my father. I quietly walked into the kitchen and listened through the door. The man wanted to take our car. Dad offered to make the three payments that were due, but the man demanded the entire sum---£325---or the car. I slipped out of the door, thinking: Who might have £ 325? Who would even consider lending me so much money? The only person I could think of was Mort. I ran back to his deli and told him my tale. “So, could you possi bly lend my father £325?"I finished, realizing how absurd it sounded. Although Mort’s eye bored(挖) holes in my face, he gave me £ 325, saying,“I 'll take back half your wages until it's repaid.”That night I was a hero to my family, But the real hero was Mort Rubin, who quietly raised my salary every month afterwards. He made the world a better place.4. Why does the author talk about his family in Paragraph 2?A. To show his strong desire for a job.B. To reflect his poor living conditions.C. To stress the heavy burden on his father.D. To prove high living costs in California.5. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence?A. The meal was cheap but very deliciousB. The soup was fuel in snowy weather.C. The soup was more than the family could eat.D. The soup was a basic solution to the problem of the author’s family.6. Why did Mort give the author £ 325?A. Because the author wanted to buy a car.B. Because the three payments of the author’s family were due.C. Because he thought it absurd not to lend the author the money.D. Because the author wanted to pay off all the debts for his family.7. Which words can be used to describe Mort Rubin?A. Cold but flexible.B. Patient and hard-working.C. Kind and helpful.D. Strict and calculating.CResearch finds that children who play violent games or watch violent TV can become violent themselves, but what drives this change? Are the kids simply copy what they see on the screen, or could gaming have a more profound effect on their brains, affecting behavior? To explore that question, Dr. Vincent Matthews and his colleagues at Indiana University, who have long studied media violence, looked at what happened in the brains in 28 students who were randomly assigned to play either a violent, first-person shooter game or a non-violent one every day for a week. None of the participants had much previous gaming experience. At the start of the study, researchers used functional MRI to scan brain activity in the participants, all young adult men, while they completed lab-based tasks involving either emotional or non-emotional content. The participants were then scanned again while they repeated the same tasks after a week of playing the video games.Researchers found that those who played the violent video games showed less activity in areas that involved emotions, attention and inhibition(抑制) of our impulses(冲动). “Behavioral studies have shown an increase in aggressive behavior after violent video games, and what we show is the psychological explanation for what the behavioral studies are showing,”say Matthews. “We’re showing that there are changes in brain function that are likely related to that behavior.”It’s not clear how long-lasting the changes may be. When Matthews brought the participants back after a week of not playing video games, their brain activity had changed again, recovering to more normal reactions, but their brain functions still weren’t quite the same as before they were exposed to the violent games.8. What do we know about the participants?A. Both teenagers and adults were chosen.B. The participants had never played any computer games before.C. 28 participants were all young adult men.D. The participants were carefully divided into two groups.9. After playing a violent video game, a person is more likely to be ______.A. concentrativeB. impulsiveC. calmD. tired10. What does the underlined part “more profound”in Paragraph I most probably mean?A. Greater.B. Shorter.C. negativeD. positive.11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. What Causes Children to Be ViolentB. How Matthews Carried Out His StudyC. Say “No” to Computer GamesD. How Playing Violent Video Games May Change the BrainDWhen a laptop or smart phone battery starts losing its power, the only options are to buy an expensive replacement, or just keep it plugged in all the time. But one woman may have found the answer to this problem.Mya Le Thai is a scientist studying at the University of California. She recently discovered a process that may lead to batteries that last forever.Thai said she had been frustrated that the batteries for her wireless devices degraded over time, until they failed to charge fully. Thai did not like having to keep her laptop connected to an electrical outlet(电源插座) to keep it powered on. So, she decided to do something about that problem. At first, she and her team at UC Irvine thought about inventing a new battery. But as they experimented, Thai discovered something that might permit lithium-ion(锂离子) batteries to last forever.Lithium-ion batteries power most wireless devices. Over time, the batteries lose the ability to hold a charge. Most of these batteries have a life span of about 7,000 charging cycles before they die. One of the reasons lithium-ion batteries degrade is their use of nanowires to carry electricity. Nanowires are extremely thin, A human hair is thousands of times thicker, for example. Nanowires are extremely efficient carriers of electricity, which makes them useful in batteries. But Thai said their thinness also makes them weak. "Nanowires break and fracture over time,” she said. “That's why they lose capacity.”But, Thai had a theory --- the nanowires might last longer if covered with a gel(凝胶). She and her team tested this theory.“ It was a long process and a lot of work, "Thai said. The team tried many coverings for the wires. PMMA, a type of plastic, was one of them. The nanowires were coated with PMMA and cycled through charges 200,000 times. The PMMA-coated nanowires showed no evidence of damage. The results suggest that batteries could last forever, without losing charging ability. Thai said 200,000 cycles amount to about three months on just one device. Thai hopes to continue her research to understand why this gel works so well and to see if any other gel could create better results.12. What caused Thai to work on lithium-ion batteries?A. She found that batteries can’t be powered fully.B. She disliked the batteries for her laptop.C. She thought batteries were too expensive.D. She and her team were assigned to invent a new battery.13. Which of the following sentences is TRUE about nanowires?A. They are too weak to carry electricity.B. They last only 7,000 charging cycles.C.They are the main cause of battery degrading.D. They are not suitable to use in batteries.14. The breakthrough may most probably lie in____________.A. a new kind of batteryB. new materials for batteriesC. coating nanowires in gelD. a new way of charging batteries15. Education is indanger of becoming a branch of the entertainment industry. Although education should indeed be entertaining where possible, it cannot always be fun. Often, it needs the "hard yards".Some educationalists feel that if something causes worry it should be avoided at all costs. I would disagree. Facing up to challenges helps develop children. Avoiding challenges can severely limit their potential. Tougher children are able to try and fail. The less tough may simply fail to try anything new.I'm not advocating putting children under pressure. The real debate is perhaps what pressures are unavoidable. It's not about "throwing children into the deep end", but rather encouraging them to put their foot in the water and giving them the skills to float. This latter approach (方法)is basically the work I and my team do at the University of Hull. So, for example, many children will say: "What happens if it goes wrong? " We work hard to change this so that the sentence reads: "What happens if it goes right? " One word difference, but a world away when thinking about challenges. We try to help children deal more effectively with life using a three-step approach. Firstly, it is important to set realistic and achievable goals. Then it is a matter of finding out what factors (因素) are helping children to achieve these goals and what factors are working against this. The final step is to discover which of these factors can be controlled, or at least influenced, and what factors the child is in reality stuck with. Redirecting children's energies to movable obstacles (障碍) can produce huge life changes. However, I think that for most of us we have become stress (压力)averse (反对的)and overreact (反应过激)to it. It has always been there, and it has always been the case that some people enjoy it, some need help to deal with it and some people's lives are ruined by it.Showing our children that stress can be faced with and beaten offers them a way forward. The more a fear is avoided, the bigger it gets. From the passage, we know the writer believes .education should always be funchildren should avoid facing challengeseducation needs challengesthe more challenges, the better for the childrenThe writer disagreed with some educationalists because .some children are less toughsome challenges do good to childrensome pressures are avoidablesome children are unaware of their potentialWhat do the writer and his team do at the University of Hull?Give the children challenges and suggest suitable approaches.Put the children under pressure by giving them challenges.Make the children tougher mentally and physically.Record what the children do in stressful situations. What is the correct attitude towards stress according to the writer? We should experience stress and learn skills to deal with it.We should put ourselves to the test in stressful situations. We should love stress because stress is unavoidable.D.We should try our best to avoid stress.6. But it's the parents' job to serve a variety offoods and expose their children to healthy dieting habits. Some simple strategies (策略)can help even the pickiest eater learn to like a more varied diet. First of all, you don't have to send children out of the kitchen. With hot stones, boiling water and sharp knives at hand, it is understandable that parents don't want children in the kitchen when they're making dinner. But studies suggest that involving children in meal preparation is an important first step in getting them to try new foods. In one study, nearly 600children from kindergarten to sixth grade took part in a nutrition curriculum (课程)intended to get them to eat more vegetables and whole grains. The researchers found that children who had cooked their own foods were more likely to eat those foods in the cafeteria than children who had not. Kids don't usually like radishes, but if kids cut them up and put them in the salad, they will love the dish.Another strategy is not to diet in front of your children. Kids are tuned into their parents'eating preferences and are far more likely to try foods if they see their mother or father eating them. Given this powerful effect, parents who are trying to lose weight should be careful of how their dieting habits can influence a child's perceptions about food and healthful eating. In one study of 5-year-old girls about dieting, one child noted that dieting involved drinking chocolate milkshakes, because her mother was using Slim-Fast drinks. Another child said dieting meant "you fix food but you don't eat it." By exposing young children to erratic dieting habits, parents may be putting them at risk for eating disorders. What is the main purpose of this article? To explain what causes children's eating disorder. To teach children about the meal preparation process. To advocate the importance of vegetables and whole grains. To inform parents how they can help their children like varied foods.Which of the following groups will eat more balanced meals? The children who help cook food. The children whose parents are on a diet. The children who do not love radishes. The children whose parents work in a cafeteria."Radish" in the second paragraph might be a kind of ?A.meatB.fruitC.vegetableD.jamA.ObviousB.HealthfulC.DishonestD.Inappropriate(4)A.It is children's favorite foodB.It looks like a chocolate milkshake.C.It contains a variety of vegetables.D.It is intended for slim, fast people(5)What does "erratic" in the last sentence imply?Which of the following is true about Slim-Fast?四、七选五(共5题,每题2.5分,共12.5分)7. A.B.Is Online School for You?Have you ever wished you didn't have to wake up early and go all the way to school? For 700, 000 American kids, this wish comes true. 1 This kind of learning has different names:online learning or distance learning. Regardless of what it is called, this idea may create an impression of a lonely kid reading pages of information on a computer screen rather than from a book or an image of another kid spending the day playing video games instead of learning mathematics or reading a book. Where online education is concerned, both of these are false!Actually, online learning simply means learning differently.2 Flexibility (灵活性)is the main advantage. Students can attend school wherever and whenever they desire. Homework can be turned in from anywhere the student has Internet access. Additionally, many online schools will allow students to work at their own pace.Another advantage of online schooling is with the variety of courses. Most online schools teach the same basic classes like English, math, science, and history. 3 However, traditional schools are often unable to offer these types of classes if there are not enough students.Online schools also have different types of learning tools for kids to use. For example, many online schools have special Web sites where only students registered (注册)in online classes can watch videos, see lessons presented, or chat with teachers and other students. Some online schools have live class times where students can call and talk with the teacher directly. 4Computer technology is amazing, and we use computers for chatting with our friends, listening to music, and playing games. 5 Since 2006, at least 38 states either have their own online schools or made rules for students attending them. It looks like online schools are here to stay, but only you can decide if this type of learning is right for you.Almost every part of our lives is affected by it, and school is no exception.Of course, there are some drawbacks of going to school online.C. D. E. F.G.Online schools offer many benefits for the learners.Other online schools even have online clubs where kids can talk about their hobbies. They attend school over the Internet using ordinary home or library computers. For some students, online school may be ideal but for others, traditional school may better meet their needs. Some online schools also offer specialized classes in subjects such as space science, French, or zoology.五、补全句子(共10题,每题2.5分,共25分)8.我知道你们中许多人在生活中面临着各种各样的问题,很难把精力集中在专心读书上。

This is the simple village people of Malaysia.I was moved.I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I sighed and sat down to read my 21st Century Teens. It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back. From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time. The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watchand was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. To be fair, this observation is also frequently made of Canada and Canadians, and should best be considered North American. There are, of course, exceptions. Small-minded officials, rude waiters, and ill-mannered taxi drivers are hardly unknown in the US. Yet it is an observation made so frequently that it deserves comment. For a long period of time and in many parts of the country, a traveler was a welcome break in an otherwise dull existence. Dullness and loneliness were common problems of the families who generally lived distant from one another. Strangers and travelers were welcome sources of distraction, and brought news of the outside world. The tough realities of the border also shaped this tradition of hospitality. Someone traveling alone, if hungry, injured, or ill, often had nowhere to turn except to the nearest settler agent. It was not a matter of choice for the traveler or merely a charitable impulse on the part of the settlers. It reflected the hardship of daily life: if you didn't take in the stranger and take care of him, there was no one else who would. And someday, remember, you might be in the same situation.Today there are many charitable organizations which specialize in helping the exhausted traveler. Yet, the old tradition of hospitality to strangers is still very strong in the US, especially in the smaller cities and towns away from the busy tourist routes. “I was just traveling through, got talking with this American, and pretty soon he invited me home for dinner —amazing.” Such observations reported by visitors to the US are not uncommon, but are not always understood properly. The casual friendliness of many Americans should be interpreted neither as superficial nor as artificial, but as the result of a historically developed cultural tradition. As is true of any developed society, in America a complex set of cultural signals and customs is the basis of all social interrelationships. And, of course, speaking a language does not necessarily mean that someone understands social and cultural patterns. Visitors who fail to “translate”cultural meanings properly often draw wrong conclusions. For example, when an American uses the word “friend”, the cultural meanings of the word may be quite different from those it has in the visitor's language and culture. It takes more than a brief encounter on a bus to tell polite customs from individual interest. Yet, being friendly is a virtue that many Americans value highly and expect from both neighbors and strangers.32.In the eyes of visitors from the outside world, ________.A. rude taxi drivers are rarely seen in the USB. small-minded officials deserve a serious commentC. Canadians are not so friendly as their neighborsD. most Americans are ready to offer help33.It could be inferred from the last paragraph that _______.A. culture has an influence over social inter-relationshipB. polite customs and individual interest are inter-relatedC. various virtues shows themselves only among friendsD. social inter-relationships equal the complex set of cultural customs34.Families in border settlements used to entertain strangers _______.A. to improve their hard lifeB. in view of their long-distance travelC. to add some flavor to their own daily lifeD. out of a charitable impulse 35.The tradition of hospitality to strangers _______.A. tends to be superficial and artificialB. is generally well kept up in the UnitedStatesC. is always understood properlyD. has something to do with the busy tourist route 第二节阅读下列表述,若与Wonder内容相符请在机读卡对应位置将A选项涂黑,不符请涂B。
