However, when my mom told me that I had to live with my grandfather for six weeks, Icomplained. A voice inside me said that it would be miserable to live with mygrandpa, which meant no afternoon baseball games with my neighborhoodfriends. The first week with Grandpa was fine. We went out for dinner and watched TV together. One day, Grandpa was sitting at the table reading the newspaper. I sat on the couch and flipped (快速翻动)through my baseball card collection. "Wish I had a Hank Aaron card," I said to myself. When Grandpa heard me, he said in surprise, "I didn't know you liked baseball, Susan." I explained that it was my favorite sport and I usually played it all summer with my friends. Grandpa stood up shakily and walked to the door. "Let's go, " he said, with excitement. "I want to show you something. "We drove for quite a while, and when Grandpa finally stopped the car, we were in front of some old houses. A sign on each house said "Land Will Be Sold. Call For Details." I noticed that Grandpa had a faraway look in his eyes. "I haven't been here for decades,” he whispered. "Probably twenty or thirty years." We walked there and he pointed down the street and said, "That's the field where I used to play baseball every summer." Then I realized where we were: This was the house where Grandpa grew up! We looked inside a window and saw a big mess. No one had lived here for a long time.On the ride home, Grandpa was very quiet. I thought about how he must miss his old home and the friends he grew up with. If he could just go back in time for a few minutes, he would feel very happy and less lonely. Then I realized that six weeks away from home was not too bad, especially with Grandpa around.22. The development of self-control begins at birth and continuesthroughout our lives. As babies, we have little or no control over ourbehaviors and emotions, but as we get older, with the help of parents or caregivers, we learn how to take turns, how to pay attention in class, stick to a challenging task, and restrain (制止)from hitting another child. These abilities continue to develop in our childhood and then youthhood. Also, it is clear that being impulsive (易冲动的)can have bad effects on children, causing interpersonal problems, poor physical health, and psychiatric disorders. Therefore, by learning self-control, children can make right decisions and respond to situations in positive ways. One of the effective strategies, when helping children develop self-control abilities, is to select developmentally proper tasks. Try setting up simple goals first, where success is expected, before moving onto the next goal. For preschoolers, goals might include not interrupting or not fighting on the playground. For early elementary school students, right goals might be following bedtime rules. However, it's not enough to set up simple goals, because for children of the same age, there are still some differences in the development of self-control abilities. Some general strategies often help them learn right self-control behaviors.•Take a breakEncourage children to take a break or "time in” whenever they feel down, annoyed or angry. Stepping away from an upsetting situation can help a child calm down.•Teach and provide attentionPaying attention is a skill that can be taught. Encourage children to resist interrupting by learning to observe others without talking, so they can join in easily. Make sure to provide children with attention at times so they don't feel ignored and therefore are unlikely to interrupt.•Use proper rewards (奖励)In order to develop positive behaviors, children need frequently positive feedback. Praise and consistent feedback can be highly rewarding for young children. It is important to let a child know what a desired behavior is.•Use activities designed to teach self-regulation (自我管理)Using specific activities can help teach young children skills that improve self-control. Some of these skills include dealing with "wanting something I can't have", understanding feelings, and controlling anger.25. What can we learn from Paragraph 1 ?A. As people get older, their attention will improve naturally.B. Being impulsive can often cause bad results in children's grades.C. Children can learn how to control themselves with the help of parents.D. Self-control development begins at birth and keeps growing till youthhood.26. What can teachers do when students feel very disappointed?A. Teach and provide attention.B. Give rewards and suggestions.C. Teach skills to regulate themselves.D. Encourage them to take a break.27. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Time Waits for No Man—The Development of Self-ControlB. Have Power over Your Mind—Tips on Developing Self-ControlC. Prevention Is Better than Cure—Rules of Self-Control BehaviorsD. Think Twice Before You Act—The Importance of Self-Control SkillsDTechnology ProgressOn June 22, 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew into Dayton, Ohio, for dinner atOrville Wright’s house. It had been just a month since the young pilot5s firstever individual nonstop crossing of the Atlantic, and he felt he ought to pay respects to the pioneer of flight.Forty-two years later, on July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong was allowed to bring a personal guest to the Kennedy Space Center to view the launch of NASA's towering Saturn V rocket. Armstrong invited his hero, Charles Lindbergh. That's how fast technology advanced in the 20th century. However, progress isn't what it used to be now. Northwestern University economist Robert Gordon argues that by 1970, all the key technologies of modern life were in place: electricity, highways, telecommunications, and the like. After that, innovation (仓U新)and economic growth simply couldn't keep going as fast as the last 100 years—a period Gordon calls "the special century". Gordon argues the lives of people in developed nations look and feel the same in 2020 as they did in 1979 or 1989.Slowing down is good in one small way, though bad in most of the ways that count. Rapid changes can sometimes be disorienting (令人迷惑的).And when things develop at a lower speed, people and institutions do have more time to breathe and fit in. But slowing down isn't what it should be. In many areas of technology, the forward movement today feels tragically slow, even nonexistent.Consider consumer robotics. There5s huge potential for robots to help us. But home robotics companies seem to keep folding. For example, social robot maker Jibo closed in March after raising almost $73 million. Our century’s one signature technology achievement is smartphones. At this point, we've had them in our pockets long enough to begin to appreciate their dangers. Meanwhile the list of possibly world¬changing technologies that get people's attention but still remain in the original stage is very long. Self¬driving cars, AR glasses. Need I continue?Indeed, these are all hard problems. But historically, solving the big problems has required continuous, large-scale investment(投资), often with private markets and taxpayers sharing the cost. In this century, we need to undo some bad results of the last great boom (繁荣)by developing affordable zero——and negative—emissions technologies right now. That's another hard problem—and to solve it, we'll need to rethink what made the "special century", so special.28. The writer mentions Charles Lindbergh in Paragraphs 1 and 2 to show that __________.A. Charles has contributed greatly to technologyB. Charles paid respects to the pioneer of flightC. technology developed rapidly in the 20th centuryD. technology has advanced to a higher new level29. The underlined word "folding” in Paragraph 5 probably means _____________.A. shuttingB. separatingC. growingD. operating30. What can we learn from the passage?A. Some world-changing technologies are not making progress.B. Home robotics companies failed because of little investment.C. It's time to realize the disadvantages of fast development now.D. It doesn't take us long before we realize the dangers of smartphones.31. The writer probably agrees _______________.A. markets and taxpayers have a duty to develop technologiesB. innovation and investment are needed for technology advanceC. what made the last century special will happen in the new centuryD. rapid changes in technology are bad in most of the ways that count四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

First, the making of paper requires the loss of many millions of trees each year. And worldwide use of paper is expected to double in the next 40 years. Clearly, the planet cannot stand such a high rate of forest loss. The second great problem with paper is what happens once it is no longer useful. A large amount of wastepaper ends up in landfills, where it can produce harmful gases and finally contribute to global climate change. One simple solution can greatly reduce both of these problems: paper recycling. Instead of cutting down trees, recycle existing paper to feed the paper-making process.Paper is mainly made from cellulose (纤维素),which can be used repeatedly in papermaking. Unfortunately, it also means that paper waste takes a surprisingly long time to break down in landfills. So far, trees are the only source(来源) of cellulose that can fill the great demand for paper products. Therefore, recycling paper is simply one of the best ways to save trees. Thanks to advances in processing, recycled paper need not be the dark-color1 edstuff many of us are familiar with. It now can offer the same print performance as non-recycled paper.Effective recycling requires a continuous effort from everyone at all levels of society. The way to begin is with education and understanding. Once enough people realize the need for recycling, more effective recycling systems can be developed. The need is real. The massive loss of trees affects everybody on earth. Everyone should do their part to recycle paper and encourage government and industry to do the same. The world will be a better place for it!4. What can we infer from the text?A. The use of recycled paper will double in 40 years.B. Recycling paper helps relieve global climate change.C. Wastepaper can easily break down in landfills.D. There are not enough landfills for wastepaper.5. What makes recycled paper more acceptable?A. The great demand of trees.B. The low processing cost.C. Its dark-color1 ed feature.D. Its improved print performance.6. What does the author propose?A. Punishing the act of cutting trees.B. Recycling paper.C. Improving recycling system.D. Promoting paper industry.7. How is the text mainly developed?A. By analyzing causes and effects.B. By offering research plans and data.C. By discussing problems and solutions.D. By comparing strengths and weaknesses.CPhotographer Rebecca Douglas has always been fascinated by the night sky. Her love for stars has taken theU.K.resident on “star walking” trips toIcelandand into theArctic, where she steps out onto darkened trails to capture twinkling stars and glowing planets in her images.Hiking at night isn’t uncommon. Plenty of people hike after dark to get to campsites or watch the sunrise from a mountaintop. Star walking goes a step further by blending hiking with stargazing. Rather than heading to an observatory or setting up a telescope in your backyard, star walking takes you on a brief journey to look at the stars from different viewpoints.Whether you’re in the mountainside or by the lake with stars reflecting on the water, star walking is often much more dynamic than traditional stargazing. What’s more, star walking is good for you. There are plenty of studies that show the health benefits of being in nature. Spending at least two hours a week outdoors, particularly while engaging in what involves “effortless attention”, can decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and stress levels. So how does an aspiring star walker get started? It doesn’t take much more than a sturdy pair of boots. While telescopes and binoculars obviously have their uses, people are encouraged to start with naked-eye stargazing. Using only the eyes allows one to get lost in the infinite expanse of space and lets the mind go.It is advised that one read up on the night sky before heading out. Free mobile apps, such as Star Walk 2, canhelp identify celestial bodies(天体)and are easy to use—simply point your phone at the sky to reveal a map. Websites like Sky & Telescope and NASA’s Space Place cover the basics, have in-depth explanations on stars, and offer advice on equipment. Space Place posts monthly skywatching updates, so you can plan outings around events such as meteor showers. In the United States, national parks are great options for inexperienced night hikers. Many offer guided outings that explain the importance of protecting night skies. Those with a good number of walks under their belt may want to try GlacierNational Park in Montana. If national parks and other dark-sky designated areas are out of range, check local astronomy clubs and observatories for guided sessions. Sites like the International Astronomical Union are useful for finding resources by area.At the end of the day, the best advice is to take it slow and enjoy the journey.“With all of the chaos(混乱)that’s happening around us, the one constant has been the night sky,” explains Douglas, who hasbeen exploring popular places nearby, long after the crowds have gone home for the day. “Walking is quite a mindful way of looking up and being reminded that, although everything feels so different, some things are still the same.”8. According to the passage, star walking refers to ________.A. going to an observatoryB. looking at stars in mountainsC. combining hiking and stargazingD. setting up a telescope in the backyard9. One of the reasons why people go on a star walking is that _______.A. it’s easier to identify celestial bodiesB. it is good for physical and mental healthC. they can enjoy the journey without crowdsD. they can raise awareness of protecting night skies10. According to the passage, a star walking beginner is advised to _______.A. prepare a pair of strong bootsB. start by observing with telescopesC. join an astronomy club or an observatoryD. find guided outings with the help of mobile apps11. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.A. excite people’s interest in star walkingB. recommend some places for star walkingC. explain the health benefits of star walkingD. introduce the preparations for star walkingDIt is universally acknowledged that renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower are all much better for the climate than fossil fuels. It is true for wind and solar. However, the picture for hydropower is more complicated than we think.A new study by the Environmental Defense Fund analyzed the climate impacts of 1,500 hydropower facilities across the globe. That accounts for about half of hydropower generation worldwide. The researchers looked at whether the facilities behave as a greenhouse gas sink or as a source. To figure this out, they looked into all the different components that help determine a hydropower facility's greenhouse gasemissions (排放).“There are so many contributors to greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower — but essentially, the majority of greenhouse gas emissions arise from the reservoir (水库) itself, as vegetation and soils are submerged underwater in the dam thatis used for the hydropower generation.” said lissa Ocko, a senior climate scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund and co-author of the study. As the submerged vegetation breaks down, it releases greenhouse gases such as CO2.“The larger the surface area of the reservoir, the more greenhouse gases are going to be given out from that reservoir. Also, the temperature plays a role as well how warm the reservoir is will affect how much greenhouse gases are produced and given out from the reservoir.” added Ocko.Through their analysis, Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg, also with the Environmental Defense Fund, discovered that the climate impacts of hydropower cover a complete range. The good news is that some facilities perform just as well as wind and solar. But shockingly, more than 100 facilities are actually worse for the climate than fossil fuels. The study is in the journalEnvironmentalScience and Technology. This finding doesn't mean we should forget about hydropower. “But we just need to be careful to make sure that we have climate benefits. There are a lot of situations where hydropower can be equal to wind and solar. So it really depends on the specific facility." said Ocko.12. How do scientists prove hydropower facilities' effect on the climate?A. By making comparisons.B. By conducting experiments.C. By referring to previous studies.D. By analyzing causes and effects.13. What are the main sources of greenhouse gases from hydropower?A. Vegetation and soils.B. Heat and sunlight.C. Pollutants in the reservoir.D. Components of the generators.14. What have Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg found?A The surface area of a reservoir decides the climate.B. Hydropower often influences the climate in all aspects.C. Some facilities perform much better than wind and solar.D. Fossil fuels are worse for the climate than over 100 facilities.15. What is the text mainly about?A. Scientists urge an end to hydropower.B. Hydropower is not necessarily green.C. Hydropower is worse than fossil fuels.D. Renewable energy is a complicated issue.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
