,引言

从字面意义上看,"牧师"这个词中的"牧"是指

放牧,"师"是指具有专门知识或技能的人.牧师,就

是指具备专门放牧技能的人才.其实牧师的真正意义

是指基督教神职人员,因他们受神职而担任基督教会

职务,像牧羊人(shepherd)一样管理和带领基督教信

徒,所以美其名日为"牧师",有时也被称为"教士", "神父(甫)","司祭"或"司铎".在讲英语的国家

里,"牧师"最常用的称谓是"priest".所以一提到牧

师,许多人就理所当然地认为其英语对应词就是priest,

其实问题并非如此简单.众所周知,基督教与佛教,伊

斯兰教并列为世界三大宗教,欧洲及北美洲大部分地

区的人都信奉基督教.但基督教并不是铁板一块,而

是分裂成三个主要派别,即天主教,东正教,新教.每

个派别下更是宗派林立,各宗各派对牧师的称谓大

相径庭,这就给英语学习者造成极大的困惑.本文拟

就基督教及其分支对牧师的称谓作一简单梳理.

二,基督教及其分支

基督教(Christianity)诞生于1世纪的巴勒斯坦地

区,相传为犹太的拿撒勒人耶稣所创立.基督教的主

要经典是<圣经》(Bible),包括<旧约全书>(Old Testament)和<新约全书)(NewTestament)两部分.
