To make things worse, I also managed to get 12 credit cards by the time Iwas 21. Tired of having no money, I needed to find my way to stand out. Rather thanfinding productive ways to use my money or save it for the future, I decided to blowit all on designer purses and any good high heels I could find. I only worked oneday a week at a gas station with low pay. Within a year, I got $18, 000 of the creditcard debt. For the next two years, I paid only minimum payments since I couldn’t affordto pay much more than that. The total of minimum payments was about $600 a month,so it was impossible to make ends meet. I began to feel like a hamster(仓鼠)runningon a wheel. In 2008, I decided to reduce my debt. I didn’t want to take out a loanbut wanted my debt to be one monthly payment with lower interest.I was somewhat smart and found Consumer Credit Counseling Services of GreaterMilwaukee (CCCS). It is offered through a local reputable healthcare provider andis a part of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. With CCCS, my debts were still with my creditors, but the interest rates were all lowered and CCCS acted somewhat like a debt management company. I would pay them, and they’d disperse(分散)payments to all my creditors. They charged me $35 a month, which is a small fee considering how much interest they were saving me for being in the program. It has been a struggle since I am still a part of the program and currently pay $410 a month. I started the program in January 2008 with a balance of$18, 000, and I am now down to $1, 200. This should be paid off by the end of this summer. Sure, it has taken three years. That’s like paying off a car! I can’t imagine what my balances would be if I had not entered this program. The good thing about having had a debt management plan is not only that I am getting r id of my debt, but also that I learned how to better manage my money. His name was Mr。
Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck。
As a 5-year-old boy,I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.Of course, he delivered more than milk。
There was cheese, eggs and so on。
If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note————“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery"—-—-and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear. All of this was about more than convenience。
There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen。

I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s, when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program. Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote area.Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County, Kentucky, Appalachian Mountain area. To get to her school from the town of Harlan, I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eight-mile journey, I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times. Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains, I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness. From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom (愁闷) disappeared. Upon arriving at Dorothy’s classroom, I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects. Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for “dinner” (lunch). In case you don’t know, poke greens are a weed-type plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Certification, Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas. Afterward, she invited me to the one-and-only steak house in the area to celebrate her victory, as if she had received her Ph. D. degree. After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom (传家宝), but to me it is a treasured symbolof appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.31. “Early Childhood Development” in Paragraph 1 refers to __________.A. a program directed by DorothyB. a course given by the authorC. an activity held by the studentsD. an organization sponsored by Union college32. BCACD阅读明白得课堂练学案(24)Passage Twenty-six (Sensory Evaluation of Food)A Polish proverb claims that fish, to taste right, should three times—in water, in butter and in wine. The early efforts of the basic scientists in the food industry were directed at improving the preparation, preservation, and distribution of safe and nutritious food. Our memories of certain foodstuffs eaten during the World War II suggest that, although these might have been safe and nutritious, they certainly did not taste right nor were they particularly appetizing in appearance or smell. This neglect of the sensory appeal of foods is happily becoming a thing of the past. Bow, in the book “Principles of Sensory Evaluation of Food,” the authors hope that it will be useful to food technologists in industry and also to others engaged in research into problem of sensory evaluation of foods. An attempt has clearly been make to collect every possible piece of information, which might be useful, more than one thousand five hundred references being quoted. As a result, the book seems at first sight to be an exhaustive and critically useful review of the literature. This it certainly is, but this is by no means is its only achievement, for there are many suggestions for further lines of research, and the discursive passages are crisply provocative of new ideas and new ways of looking at established findings.Of particular interest is the weight given to the psychological aspects of perception, both objectively and subjectively. The relation between stimuli and perception is well covered, and includes a valuable discussion of the uses and disadvantages of the Weber fraction of differences. It is interesting to find that in spite of many attempts to separate and define the modalities of taste, nothing better has been achieved than the familiar classification into sweet, sour salty and bitter. Nor is there as yet any clear-cut evidence of the physiological nature of the taste stimulus. With regard to smell, systems of classification are of little value because of the extraordinary sensitivity of the nose and because the response to the stimulus is so subjective. The authors suggest that a classification based on the size, shape and electronic status of the molecule involved merits further investigation, as does the theoretical proposition that weak physical binding of the stimulant molecule to he receptor site is a necessary part of the mechanism of stimulation.Apart from taste and smell, there are many other components of perception of the sensations from food in the mouth. The basic modalities of pain, cold, warmth and touch, together with vibration sense, discrimination and localization may all play a part, as, of course, does auditory reception of bone-conducted vibratory stimuli from the teeth when eating crisp or crunchy foods. In this connection the authors rightly point out that this type of stimulus requires much more investigation, suggesting that a start might be made by using subjects afflicted with various forms of deafness. It is well-known that extraneous noise may alter discrimination, and the attention of the authors is directed to the work of Prof. H. J. Eysenck on the “stimulus hunger” of extroverts and the “stimulus avoidance” of introverts.1. The reviewer uses a Polish proverb at the beginning of the article in order to[A]. introduce, in an interesting manner, the discussion of food.. show the connection between food and nationality of food.[C]. indicate that there are various ways to prepare food.[D]. impress upon the reader the food value of fish.2. The reviewers appraisal of “Principles of Sensory Evaluation of Food” is one of[A]. mixed feelings. . indifference[C]. high praise. [D]. faint praise.3. The writer of the article does not express the view, either directly or by implication, that[A]. sharply defined classifications of taste are needed.. more research should be done regarding the molecular constituency of food.[C]. food values are objectively determined by an expert “smeller”.[D]. temperature is an important factor in the value of food.4. The authors of the book suggest the use of deaf subject because[A]. deaf people are generally introversive.. the auditory sense is an important factor in food evaluation.[C]. they are more fastidious in their choice of foods.[D]. All types of subjects should be used.Vocabulary1. preservation 保鲜,储存2. sensory appeal 感官的魅力3. be provocative of 脱颖而出4. exhaustive 详尽的,无遗漏的5. discursive 推论的6. be provocative of 引起…… 1. although these might have been safe and nutritious, they certainly did not taste right nor were they particularly appetizing in appearance or smell. APhysical fitness refers to good health, and is the result of regular exercise, proper diet and nutrition, and proper rest for physical recovery. A person who is physically fit will be able to walk or run without getting breathless and he or she will be able to carry out the activities of everyday living and will not need help. How much each person can do will depend on their age and whether they are a man or woman. A physically fit person usually has a normal weight for height. If a person is too heavy or too thin for the height it may affect the health.Mental health refers to a person's emotional and psychological well-being. "A state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual is able to use his or her thinking and emotional (feeling) abilities, function in society, and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life."One way to think about mental health is by looking at how well a person functions. Feeling capable and efficient, being able to handle normal levels of stress, having good friends and family, and leading an independent life, and being able to "bounce back," or recovering from hardships, are all signs of mental health.Public Health refers to trying to stop a disease that is unhealthy to the community, and does not help in long life or promote your health. This is fixed by organized efforts and choices of society, public and private clubs, communities and individuals. It is about the health of many people, or everybody, rather than one person. Public health stops instead of encouraging a disease through surveillance (监视) of cases. To prevent being sick, it is good to do healthy behaviors, such as hand washing, vaccination programs and so on. When infectious diseases break out, washing hands may be especially important.26. What is the best title of the passage?A. Physical, Mental and Public HealthB. Something about HealthC. Forgiveness means changing from a negative attitude to a positive one."Hart and his team have created instructions to provide the training needed."The main idea is to give you guidelines on how to look at various kinds of angers and how they affect you, and how to change your attitudes towards the person you are angry with," said Norman Claringbull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project.Hart said he believes forgiveness is a skill that can be taught, as these people "want to get free of the past".36. ADear Rudyard Kipling,Father has consistently tried to instill(灌输) a sense of being a man in me ever since I was very young. When I reachedthe age of twelve he began taking me to his auto body shop. He told me this tough job would build me into a man of character. But this all changed a year ago when my mother passed away and stumbled upon your poem, If.My mother was the person who could understand me. If I ever got tired during my work hours at the shop I could call her to come and pick me up. It was my mother who instilled the love of literature and languages in me. My mother spoke six languages fluently and had thousands of books, which still sit in the attic of our house. It was in this “library〞 of hers that I picked up a book of poetry from a cold metal shelf and found your poem, If.Because of the death of my mother I felt alone, as if I belonged to no family. The image of a man was completely shattered when I saw him break down and cry, which looked so pathetic〔凄惨的〕and “unmanly〞 compared to his usual stoic〔禁欲主义者〕and emotionless countenance. Yet I remained silent remembering the golden words: “If you can keep your head when all about you/ Are losing the irs and blaming it on you… you’ll be a Man, my son!〞If reminded me to remain calm and “keep my head〞 because I wanted to be a man and wanted to be the one supporting my family. I sacrificed my ability to compete in a winter sport so that I could stay home and cook for my family and clean the house. My father saw this and our relationship has grown much stronger. He finally respectedme for who I was and told me he was proud to have a man for his son. Through this poem, I realize that to be a man is not about putting weights on a barbell〔杠铃〕but rather putting the weight of others on your back.Your poem was so much more than just a simple list of guidelines or morals that some see it as; it really changed my life and my relationship with my dad.41. Accor ding to the passage, what kind of person does the author’s father expect him to be?A. A person who will shoulder responsibilities.B. A person who knows how to earn a lot of money.C. A person who knows how to do housework.D. A person who respects his parents.【答案】A【解析】细节理解题。

One answer is that in fact each sibling grows up in_a_different_family. The firstborn is, for a while, an only child, and therefore has a completely different experience of the parents than those born later. The next child is, for a while, the youngest, until the situation is changed by a new arrival. The mother and father themselves are changing and growing up too. One sibling might live in a stable and close family in the first few years; another might be raised in a family crisis, with a disappointed mother or an angry father.Sibling competition was identified as an important shaping force as early as in 1918. But more recently, researchers have found many ways in which brothers and sisters are a lasting force in each others' lives. Dr. Annette Henderson says firstborn children pick up vocabulary more quickly than their siblings. The reason for this might be that the later children aren't getting the same oneonone time with parents. But that doesn't mean that the younger children have problems with language development. Laterborns don't enjoy that much talking time with parents, but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters, learning entire phrases and getting an understanding of social concepts such as the difference between “I” and “me”.A Cambridge University study of 140 children found that siblings created a rich world of play that helped them grow socially. Lovehate re lationships were common among the children. Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs. One way children seek more attention from parents is by making themselves different from their siblings, particularly if they are close in age. Researchers have found that the first two children in a family are typically more different from each other than the second and third. Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by being more feminine than girls with sisters. A 2003 research paper studied adolescents from 185 families over two years, finding that those who changed to make themselves different from their siblings were successful in increasing the amount of warmth they gained from their parents.63.The underlined part “in a different family” (in Para. 1) means“________”.A.in a different family environmentB.in a different family traditionC.in different family crisesD.in different families64.In terms of language development, l aterborns ________.A.get their parents' individual guidanceB.learn a lot from their elder siblingsC.experience a lot of difficultiesD.pick up words more quickly65.What was found about fights among siblings?A.Siblings hated fighting and loved playing.B.Siblings in some families fought frequently.C.Sibling fights led to bad sibling relationships.D.Siblings learned to get on together from fights.66.The word “feminine” (in Para. 4) means “________”.A.having qualities of parentsB.having qualities of womenC.having defensive qualitiesD.having extraordinary qualities【要点综述】此篇是关于同一家庭里不同子女的成长情况和兄弟姐妹之间相互影响的调查报告。
