And you also don’t know what it’s like for older people to travel until you accompany one on a trip. After flying with my elderly father from Washington, D.C., to L.A.in July, I began to realize that a companion has important tasks that can make a journey easier for older people. I booked nonstop tickets on JetBlue to avoid tiring, confusing connections, and we flew directly into small, manageable Long Beach Airport. Even though my father could walk, I arranged with the airline for wheelchair assistance, which meant we got on board first. When I took him back to the airport for his return flight to Washington, I got permission from JetBlue to wait with him at the gate instead of saying goodbye at the security checkpoint. I wished he’d had a first-class seat and access to a comfortable airline club. Better yet, I wish I had flown with him both ways. As I watched the attendant wheel him to the lift that took him from the tarmac(飞机跑道)to the plane, I felt like an anxious mom sending her child to school for the first time.Things can go awry on a plane trip. And then there is the horrifying story about Joe and Margie. When they landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, a wheelchair attendant met them to help with a connection. But somehow Margie, who had Alzheimer’s disease, disappeared.I didn’t need to worry about my father wandering away; at 82, his mind was sharper than mine. But his hearing was poor, so I worried about what would happen if he missed an important announcement. Fortunately, everything went just fine. Careful planning made the trip successful.Next time I travel with a senior, I’ll know better. I hope there will be a next time.25.Why did the man buy nonstop tickets? ________A.His father was tired of flights.B.He had important tasks to do.C.He cared about his father.D.His schedule was tight.26.How did the author feel when seeing his father off?________A.Disappointed. B.Delighted. C.Worried. D.Sad.27.What does the underlined part “go awry” probably mean? ________A.be amused.B.carry on as usual.C.live up to one’s expectation.D.be away from the correct course.28.What can we learn from the passage? ________A.taking a trip does great good to seniors.B.it is a pleasant experience to travel with seniors.C.to have a long journey with seniors is unpractical.D.a good arrangement ensures seniors to take a nice trip.CThe fight is on to get rid of air pollution in our cities. While the best solution in the long-term would be to ban fossil-fueled cars, that won’t help the millions who are dying in the meantime, and so some high-tech solutions are now on the cards. In March 2016, 10 London pigeons became famous. These pigeons took to the sky from Primrose Hill in north London, wearing backpacks monitoring air pollution. Once in the air, the backpacks sent live air-quality updates to the smartphones of the Londoners below. The pigeons and their backpacks were just the latest in a series of increasingly desperate attempts to monitor and control air pollution. London’s air pollution problem has been getting worse for years, and it often rises to more than three times the European Union’s legal limit.Another promising approach can be found in Beijing, after China declared a “war against pollution” in 2014.A seven-metre-high “Smog Free Tower”, designed by a Dutch scientist, Daan Roosegaarde, opened in Beijing’s 751 D Park in September 2016.It is a huge, outdoor air purifier. Airborne particles(颗粒)are sucked into the tower where they receive a positive charge. The particles are then caught by a negatively charged dust-removal plate and clean air is blown out of the other end. “Changing smog particles does not take much current.” Roosegaarde said.As for what to do with the collected PM waste, he has currently set up a business making jewellery out of the waste. Prince Charles owns a set of “smog free” cufflinks(袖扣). If collected on at a big scale, Roosegaarde believes it could even be used as a building material.Mexico City has an alternative solution. Looking to Nature to maximize the surface area of a building, Allison Dring, a Berlin-based architect, managed to catch light and wind from all sides. She is now making a building material by burning agricultural crop by-products in the absence of oxygen. “It means that you are a ctually taking carbon(碳) out of the sky, transforming it into a material, and then using it to build,” says Dring. The fight against outdoor air pollution is really just starting. Even if none of the ideas take off, at least Prince Charles’ cufflinks, the special building surface and pigeons wearing back-packs will have brought the issue more to the public’s attention.29.The 10 pigeons in London were used to ________A.monitor air pollution B.warn LondonersC.update weather forecast D.promote backpacks30. What can we learn about the Smog Free Tower? ________A.Its power consumption is high.B.PM waste from it can be reused.C.It is built of agricultural by-products.D.It can attract light and wind from all sides.31.What’s the best title for the passage? ________A.When can humans get rid of smog?B.Why is technology used to fight smog?C.How are the world’s cities fighting smog?D.What makes smog a worldwide problem?DA group of young people tired of reading ‘bad news’ have taken things into their own hands – and created a free positive newspaper. The Champion is the resulting newspaper, which was produced with the support of the Youth Work Programmeat LYCS (Lourdes Youth and Community Services) in Dublin’s north east inner city, and was funded by the County Dublin Youth Services Board (CDYSB).The teens who put together the newspaper are aged from 13 – 19, and tired of reading in the media every day about young people hanging around and causing trouble. This newspaper champions young people, covering a wide range of topics and including detailed reports of individual young people’s work, ambition and achievements.“They knew themselves that there were a lot of good things happening,” explained Sarah Kelleher, directo r of LYCS. “Their friends were achieving a lot and no one seems to comment about that.” She said that they picked the newspaper as opposed to any other media as “it’s the printed word people see and it sticks in their mind”.The teens understand why people want to read dramatic and negative news, and they aren’t naive about crime or other serious issues. But they feel that there are a lot of good things happening that aren’t being reported on. Three thousand copies of The Champion have been printed, and will be going free into the letterbox of every house in the area. “I think they are hoping people will be pleasantly surprised,” said Kelleher. The concept came from a small number of people, but in the end it took the work of at least 50 people to complete the whole project. They contacted youth clubs, schools, and other groups to find out what positive news they had to share. The Champion also serves to promote youth work, which Sarah says “is a very low-cost service to run, but it can have an absolutely amazing impact for young people in a community like this”. She added that cuts can have an impact on youth work, and that “the more you k eep young people in youth work, the more things like this they produce”.32.Why did the teens start the newspaper? ________A.To promote youth work. Here I feel greatly privileged to introduce to you my favorite one, the Dragon Boat Festival.Being a lunar holiday, the Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. With a long history, it is marked with eating Zongzi and racing dragon boats, in memory of the great ancient poet Qu Yuan. He is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river, due to the fact that his devotion to his country was ignored. The reason why I favor this festival is that I really enjoy having a good feed on delicious Zongzi while watching the wonderful Dragon Boat races, with all my family members accompanied. To sum up, the Dragon Boat Festival is a day of vital significance. I do hope you can come to China to experience it.Best wishes! Text 1M: Only two days left until summer break! What are your plans, Jessica?W: I’m off to Canada for a camping trip. (1) What about you, Sam?M: I think I’ll stay here and relax.Text 2W: What are you guys laughing at?M: It’s this new movie called The Internship. It’s very funny. (2)Text 3M: I’m afraid we’ll have to cancel the trip, Grace.W: Yeah, this is much more important. You’ll have to go to the funeral. He was your uncle. (3) Text 4W: Benjamin promised to come for our party if he has time.M: He often does it, but he never seems to have time. So you had better not take his words seriously, otherwise you will get disappointed later. (4)Text 5 (推断题)W: I often mistake Mark for Tom in class. Can you tell them apart?M: No. They are twins, and many teachers make the same mistake like us. It is really a little embarrassing to make mistakes all the time in face of so many students.Text 6M: Look at all this bread! French, Italian…it all looks really good. I don’t know when America started its bread revolution, but I’m sure glad it happened. I could eat bread all day!W: Me, too. This isn’t the kind of bread we ate when we were young. That sliced bread had more artificial things in it than you can count! (6)M: Yeah, but our parents didn’t realize it was so unhealthy. These days, you can find a lot of freshly-baked bread with only four or five ingredients.W: So, what are we going to buy? That long loaf of dark bread looks really good.M: I’d rather have something lighter and thicker so I can make a nice big sandwich with it. (7) Text 7M: L ook at this place! If I didn’t know it was the city I grew up in, I’d swear I was somewhere else! (8)W: Yeah…so many houses are empty or broken down. It wasn’t like this when we were kids. M: We used to play ball in the streets all the time, but it looks so dangerous now.W: And ugly. Look at all that trash in the streets. (9) The wind just pushes it along. What a lonely place!M: This used to be a great city. People came from miles around to work in the shops and eat in the restaurants. What a sad sight! I guess when the glass making industry decided to move across the country where it’s cheaper, the quality of life here went away, too.W: Yeah, let’s go. There’s nothing left for us here. I’m getting depressed.Text 8W: George, why are you a vegetarian? Your whole family eats meat, except you. I can’t imagine how you chose to live this way.M: Oh, it happened a long time ago when I was about ten years old. We had some friends who lived on a small farm. They had chickens, goats, sheep, and a few cows. (11) One time, we were invited over for dinner. We came early so we could play before we ate. I was running around the yard with my friends, when I saw the father preparing the meal. He had just caughta chicken and was cutting off its head. I felt very sick when I saw him do it. (12) After that, Iwould think about the poor chicken every time I ate meat. I ate less and less meat, until Istopped for good when I was twelve years old. (10)W: I see. What did your parents think about your decision?M: Well, sin ce it didn’t happen all at once, they probably learned to accept that I would be a vegetarian. It wasn’t easy for them — especially for Mom, who had to cook differently for me. Text 9M: Mom, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the food in India. Ev er since I got back from my trip, I’ve been dying for some real Indian food. (13) But there’s nothing around here. No restaurants serve the kinds of dishes I ate there. I’d have to go to a big city to find anything that comes close. In our town, they don’t even make spicy food!W: Well, Drew, why don’t you try making your own? (14)M: I wish I could! But I wouldn’t know where to start.W: I’ll help you look online for some recipes.M: How will we know which ones are good?W: We’ll try them, of course! After some practice, we’ll be able to tell which ones we’ll like best. M: But I doubt we’ll find everything we need in the grocery stores. I’m sure they use many unusual spices in India.W: We will start simply. I know I’ve seen some Thai spices at the marke t — maybe some of them will be useful. If we find that those aren’t enough, we can order some online. There must be Indian grocery stores somewhere in America that will ship them. (15) If worse comes to worst,I’ll ask my brother in New York to look around. (16) He should be able to find a place that sells Indian spices!M: Thanks, Mom! (16) This is gonna be fun! I can’t wait to start cooking!Text 10Whoever dreamed up the idea of a subway knew what it means to live in a city. Study the faces of the subway riders, and you’ll see what I mean. They are all traveling in a busy world that exists under another busy world. The New York subway is one of the largest public transportation systems in the world. It is also one of the oldest — it has been underneath this city for 110 years now. (17) I’ve been riding it for half that time. When I was a kid, there wasn’t any fear — only adventure. Subways were for dreaming. And I would stand at the window of the front car and dream through the great network of tunnels, watching the red and green lights go by. A subway is like a secret, a child’s game. You go in one hole and you come out another. You move fast —much faster than a taxi, or walking or running. Years ago, a woman named Rosie Ruiz tried to steal a victory in the New York marathon by taking a subway to the finish line. (18) Rosie was right. The subway was faster. In the 1960s, the subway got to be a dangerous place. (19) Subways have been made a great deal safer since then. I think what people like most about the subway, apart from basic transportation, still comes from the magic feeling of rushing around fast in a train underground. (20)。
