You have to go to work all day, pay bills, and can't just sit around playing video games whenever you want. No thank you! I plan on staying a kid for as long as possible. We drove for several hours each day, passing through lots of flat plains and farm fields. Tommy and I tried to stay entertained by playing road trip games like I Spy and the License Plate Game. But after a while, we got pretty bored of those.Finally, after what felt like forever, we made it to the Grand Canyon! I couldn't believe how massive and deep it was when we finally saw it with our own eyes. The pictures didn't do it justice at all. We stayed in a little cabin right near the canyon's rim for a few nights. Every morning, I would wake up, look out the window, and just be in awe at the breathtaking view.We spent our days hiking along the rim trails and learning all about how the Grand Canyon was formed by erosion over millions of years. The ranger guides taught us about the different rock layers and showed us fossils and autres cool stuff. We even got to go down into the canyon a little ways on a guided mule ride, which was scary but awesome!After several amazing days at the Grand Canyon, we had to start heading back home. But the trip wasn't over yet! On the way back, we stopped at some other cool places too.One of my favorites was the Petrified Forest National Park. It's a huge area in Arizona covered in petrified wood from trees that lived over 200 million years ago! The logs look just like real wood, but when you touch them, they feel like rock. We learned that over millions of years, minerals slowly replaced the original wood and turned it into solid rock while preserving the tree's appearance. It was super neat to see!We also stopped at the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado, which is one of the highest suspension bridges in the world. You can walk out onto the bridge and look straight down over 1,000 feet to the bottom of the gorge. It was a little scary being up that high, but the views were incredible.By the time we finally made it back home after our big road trip, I felt like I had seen and learned so many amazing things. That was definitely the best summer vacation ever! I can't wait to go on more adventures like that.But I also did some fun stuff closer to home over the summer too. A few weeks after we got back from our trip, my parents signed me up for a little kids' cooking camp. I had never really cooked anything besides very simple stuff before, so I was really excited to learn.At cooking camp, we learned how to follow recipes and make all sorts of tasty dishes like quesadillas, pasta salad, muffins, and even our own personal little pizzas! The instructor taught us about things like properly measuring ingredients, food safety, and different cooking techniques. Today I want to tell you all about the huge important English test I had to take last year called the TEM-8. It was really hard but I studied really really hard for it too.First of all, let me explain what the TEM-8 test is. It stands for "Test for English Majors Band 8" but even though I'm not an English major, all the kids in my grade had to take it. It tests how good we are at English listening, reading, writing, and translating. The whole test was super long and took basically all day!The listening part was first. We had to listen to recordings of people talking and answer questions about what they said. Some of the recordings were conversations between two people and others were just one person giving a speech or lecture. Theconversations were easier for me to understand but the lectures were really hard, especially when they talked about sciency or techy topics I didn't know much about. I really had to concentrate so hard!Next was the reading section. We had to read a bunch of different passages and answer comprehension questions about them. There were news articles, fiction stories, essays, and more. Some of the vocabulary was super advanced so I had to use context clues and make some smart guesses on those words. The questions were pretty tricky too and really made you think critically about the passages.After that was the translation part. We had to translate passages from English into Chinese and from Chinese back into English. I thought the English to Chinese would be easier for me since Chinese is my first language, but there were lots of tricky phrases and idioms that stumped me. And the Chinese to English translation was just brutal! My English vocabulary isn't good enough yet to smoothly translate everything.Lastly was the writing section which I was most nervous about. We had to write a short essay responding to a prompt. The prompt was about whether elementary school students should have to take a test like the TEM-8. It was pretty ironic andmeta having to write an essay about the very test I was taking! I did my best to structured it with clear arguments and examples.I worked so incredibly hard studying for this test. My parents hired me an English tutor and I attended cram classes twice a week after school. I practiced tons of mock tests and learned test strategies. Basically my entire 5th grade year revolved around preparing for the TEM-8!When the big test day finally came, I was an anxious wreck. I triple checked that I had like 10 pencils, erasers, a calculator, and everything else I needed. I barely slept the night before from nerves. At school, they separated all of us into different classrooms to take the test in silent individual settings which made it feel even more serious and high stakes.After it was finally over, I just felt so drained and relieved. Parts of it went okay for me, but other parts were just way too hard for my level. I really hoped I didn't fail it. A few weeks later, they posted the scores online and I was sooo happy when I saw that I passed! Getting a passing score on the TEM-8 was one of my biggest accomplishments last year.Even though the test was crazy difficult for a 10 year old kid like me, I'm still really glad I took it and worked so hard. It motivated me to take my English studies super seriously andimprove as much as possible.
