第一部分必修一Unit 4Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2015·洛阳统考)导学号 01830153 One winter, my cousin and I were playing toy blocks in the yard. My mom was out for shopping to get groceries and my dad was asleep upstairs in his room. Suddenly, it started to snow. First it was just a little. But then it started to pour heavily. Then, we put the finishing touches to our blocks and headed back inside. Right when I opened the sliding glass door, my cousin fell down on the slippery wooden stairs. I let go of the door, my worst mistake, you see. The door locks automatically but I had put a rock, right next to the door so it wouldn't close. But while I was running to my cousin's aid I'd accidentally kicked the rock. Now, my cousin and I were locked outside. And unfortunately it started to get really windy. It was really freezing with the snow. First we started to call my dad, but he was sleeping soundly. I mean, slept through a tornado soundly. It was of no use. Then I tried to climb over the fence but it didn't work because the fence was iced by snow and wind, and the fence is six feet high. So, I climbed up to my tree house and brainstormed some ideas on ways to get in. At one point, I was seriously considering jumping out of the tree house and using the trampoline(蹦床) to jump over the fence. So, we got to work. First, I took out the trampoline. Then I started to jump. First try—I almost cracked my head. Second try—this time I convinced my cousin to do it but at the last second, he chickened_out. Third try—I jumped and missed but at the last second, my hand caught the fence, and with a lot of pushing I finally climbed over the fence and luckily, I fell on a big snowdrift. Then I got inside and unlocked the door for my cousin to get in. Reading Comprehension(20 points)AThere are three separate sources of danger in generating electricity by nuclear power(原子能).First, the radioactive material must travel from its place of production to the power station. Although the power stations themselves are strongly built, the containers used for the transport of the materials are not. Normally, only two methods of transport are in use, namely road or rail. Unfortunately, both of these may have an effect on the general public, since they are sure to pass near, or even through, heavily populated(人口稠密) areas.Second, there is the problem of waste. All nuclear power stations produce wastes that in most cases will remain radioactive for thousands of years. It is impossible to make these wastes non-radioactive, and so they must be stored in one of the inconvenient ways that scientists have invented. For example, they may be buried under the ground, or dropped into deserted mines, or sunk in the sea. However, these methods do not solve the problem, since an earthquake could easily break the containers.Third, there may occur the danger of a leak (泄漏) or an explosion at power station. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely, so it does not provide a serious objection to the nuclear program. However, it can happen.Separately, these three types of dangers are not a great cause for worry. Taken together, though, the probability of disaster is extremely high.31. The underlined word “generating”(Paragraph One) most probably means __________.。
【新教材】人教版(2019)高一英语必修第一册Unit4 单元测试卷学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读理解In late March, storms and rapid temperature shifts in several Midwestern states led to unexpected flooding. For Nebraska, it was the worst disaster in the state's history: 76 of 93 counties have had to apply for aid, with damage approximately $1.3 billion. Many families are receiving assistance for repairs to homes, farms, and infrastructure (基础设施).Although it has been a destructive time for Midwestern farm counties, many volunteers have joined in despite the dangers. For volunteer Lynn Caniglia, the feeling that comes from "helping families" is all the payment she needs.Another girl called Jeanie Goodhile talked about her efforts. She raised disabled animals on her farm in Valley, Nebraska. The floods ruined her land and nearly killed all she owned. "When the water came, I had 20 minutes to save all of my animals," Goodhile said. "When I attempted to get some animals out of their pens(畜栏), they wouldn't come out." Across the Midwest, three people and more than 2.3 million animals died in the flooding. Goodhile is grateful for the first volunteers who risked their lives to save others.Volunteers from as far away as Ohio and North Carolina rescued people trapped and are now providing supplies to those in need and helping to rebuild. "I assess homes to see if they're safe to live in after all of the damage," said volunteer Steve Metcalph. "Several steps need to be taken to ensure that a house is safe and habitable after flooding. Cleaning out a home and making repairs after flood damage can be a tough, complex process. Roads, bridges, and highways were also damaged. Most of the highways and roads have reopened, but nearly one million homes are still awaiting clean-ups."1.Which of the following best describes Nebraska's situation in late March?A. Terrible.B. Changeable.C. Pleasant.D. Effective.2.What happened to Jeanie Goodhile's farm?A.Her efforts to save some animals were in vain.B.The flood didn't kill any animal on the farm.C.There was no volunteer to help save the farm.D.She had no time to save the animals on the farm.3.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Survivors in the floodB.A joint effort to save animalsC.The government's great contributionsD.Volunteers helping victims through floodThe scientific study of earthquakes is comparatively new. Until the 18th century, few factual descriptions of earthquakes were recorded, and the natural causes of earthquakes were not well understood. The earliest earthquake for which we have descriptive information occurred in China in 1177 BC. The Chinese earthquake catalog (目录) describes several dozen large earthquakes in China during the next few thousand years. Earthquakes in Europe were mentioned as early as 580 BC, but the earliest for which we have some descriptive information occurred in the mid-16th century. The earliest known earthquakes in the Americas were in Mexico in the late 14th century and in Peru in 1471, but descriptions of the effects were not well recorded. By the 17th century, descriptions of the effects of earthquakes were being published around the world. The most widely felt earthquakes in the recorded history of North America were a series that occurred in 1811-1812 near New Madrid, Missouri. A great earthquake, whose magnitude is reported to have been about 8, occurred on the morning of December 16, 1811. Another great earthquake occurred on January 23, 1812, and a third, the strongest yet, on February 7, 1812. Aftershocks (余震) were nearly continuous between these great earthquakes and continued for months afterwards. These earthquakes were felt by people as far away as Boston and Denver. Because the population in these regions was small, the destruction of human life and property was slight. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was one of the most destructive in the recorded history of North America——the earthquake and the fire that followed killed nearly 700 people and left the city in ruins.1. When did published descriptions of the effects of earthquakes become popular in the world?A. In the 1300s.B. In the 1400s.C. In the 1500s.D. In the 1600s.2. What do we know about the earthquakes in 1811-1812 in North America?A. They killed a large number of people.B. They occurred in San Francisco.C. They could be felt very far away.D. They almost destroyed entire cities.3. What can we infer from the passage?A. Few earthquakes were scientifically studied before the 18th century.B. Earthquakes can be avoided with the development of technology.C. Most of the early earthquakes caused little damage.D. People haven't found the causes of earthquakes so far.4. What's the best title for this passage?A. The scientific study of earthquakesB. Earthquakes in historyC. The effects of earthquakes on humansD. Why earthquakes occurA food delivery man defeated a master from Peking University and won CCTV's Chinese Poetry Conference on April 4,2018. Lei Haiwei kept calm during the final of the third season of CCTV's Chinese Poetry Conference on Wednesday night, becoming the champion after defeating Peng Min, a master of literature from China's top university.Lei, from Shaoyang in Hunan, is now working as a food delivery man in Hangzhou of Zhejiang. His interest in poetry was inspired by his father, who would write poems down, stick them on the wall of the kitchen and teach him to read them from a young age.Lei missed the opportunity of going to university due to frequent school transfers when he was growing up. But that didn't diminish his passion for poetry. Since he was too poor to buy books, Lei would memorize poems in bookstores and write them out when he returned home. He used this unique method to accumulate more than 1,000 poems.Though Lei came to Hangzhou in 2008 and works as a fast food courier, his love for poems hasn't faded. On his busiest work days, the courier has to deliver more than 50 orders a day. Even so, he seized any available moment to recite poems. "For example, I am used to reciting poems when I wait for food at restaurants and traffic lights on my way to deliver food. Reciting poems not only enriches my knowledge, but also makes my job less boring," the courier said.In November, 2017, Lei went to Beijing and began recording the TV show after standing out from more than 70,000 people who signed up for the competition. After winning, Lei returned to Hangzhou and continues his delivery work and the memorizing of poems.Lei's outstanding performance during the final, and his inspirational story, have amazed Chinese audiences."His love of learning is so pure, it moved me to tears,"one netizen said "It always amazes me how some people simply hunger for knowledge," another shared.1.Why did Lei Haiwei have no chance to go to college?A.His family was very poor. .He was fascinated with poems.C.He was too busy to study. .He often changed schools.2.The underlined word "diminish" in the third paragraph can be replaced by "_______" .A.inspireB.increaseC.reduce .encourage3.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tells us?A.Lei's work is delivering food for others.B.Lei’s daily life is highly stressful at present.C.Lei uses any available time to recite poems.D.Reciting poems improves his knowledge.4.How did people find Lei's story?A.Interesting.B.Inspiring.C.Fascinating.D.Shocking.When an earthquake hit a small town, many houses fell down. After the earthquake, all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble. One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper, a special picture touched me. It gave the clothing sizes of each family member. I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan, "We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We'll share what we have with them."I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favourite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later, she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. "Oh, dear," I said. "You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much." Meghan said, "Lucy makes me happy, Mummy. Maybe she'll make another little girl happy, too."I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. 课时训练(四)Ⅰ.阅读理解ATAPPING(窃听)phones is probably one of the most common techniques in spy(谍战)movies. But when it takes place in real life with the world's top leaders as victims(受害者),it is a story much more thrilling than any film. The drama started when documents(文件)were leaked(泄露)by Edward Snowden, the former CIA employee(雇员)and National Security Agency(NSA) contractor(订约人).According to The Guardian, the documents revealed that the phone conversations of 35 world leaders were monitored by the NSA.The NSA encourages senior officials in its “customer” departments, such as the White House,to give the NSA their rolodexes(通讯录).The agency can then add the phones of leading foreign politicians to their target lists. The NSA has also been operating 80 special collection services around the world, according to German magazine Der Spiegel.Needless to say,US President Barack Obama has been busy taking calls from European leaders to talk about these issues.French President Francois Hollande is one such leader. He is complaining about the document showing that US intelligence agencies gathered more than 70 million pieces of data from phone communications in France in just 30 days, according to AFP.Another is German Chancellor Angela Merkel. She angrily called Obama to make sure that her cell phone was not tapped. The White House press secretary Jay Carney said the US “is not monitoring and will not monitor” Merkel's communications. But German officials pointed out that the US did not deny monitoring the phone in the past.So why has the US been spying on its allies(盟友)?According to Jeffrey Richelson, author of the book The US Intelligence Community,it's because the countries don't have identical(同样的)interests.“There are very few allies tha t are so close that there's no point in collecting intelligence,” said Richelson.China has not been spared from US monitoring, either, according to Der listening posts(监听站)have been built in many cities in China such as Beijing,Shanghai,Chengdu,Hong Kong and Taipei.“Countries like China and Russia, who may fall in the category of an American ‘rival(对手)’,can only imagine the extent(程度)of US tapping,” noted China Daily.Calling cybersecurity(络安全)“a matter of sovereignty(主权)”,Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China will take necessary measures to safeguard information security,China Daily reported boa constrictor (大蟒蛇)in the act of swallowing an animal. In the book it said,“Boa constrictors swallow their prey wholly without chewing it.After that they are not able to move and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion.”I thought deeply then over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil,I succeeded in making my first drawing,my Drawing Number One.I show ed my work to the grownups and asked them whether the drawing frightened them. But they answered,“Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?”My drawing was not a picture of a hat.It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But sinc e the grownups were not able to understand it,I made another drawing.I drew the inside of the boa constrictor so that the grownups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. That's my Drawing Number Two.The grownups' response this t ime was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors whether from the inside or the outside and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar. That is why at the age of six I gave up the dream that I might have been a great painter.I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and Drawing Number Two.Grownups never understand anything by themselves and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.So then I chose another profession and learned to pilot airplanes.I have flown a little over all parts of the world, and it is true that geography has been very useful to me.At a glance,I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable. In the course of this life,I have had lots of chances to meet with a great many people. And that hasn't much improved my opinion of them.Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clearsighted,I tried showing him my Drawing Number One which I have always kept.I would try to find out if this was a person of true understanding. But whoever it was,he or she would always say: That is a hat. Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors or primeval forests or stars.I would bring myself down to his level.I would talk to him about bridge, golf, politics and neckties. And the grownups would be greatly pleased to have met such an intelligent man.5.The writer drew his first picture AOn my first day of high school,I asked an eleventh-grader where my class was.And he told me it was “on the fourth floor, next to the po ol.”I found out five minutes later that we don’t even have a fourth floor and there’s no pool either!Besides that,I didn’t have any trouble with the older kid.I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and size of the school.I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours,so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550,but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade. The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve prepared for the night before.I have gotten an A,and not remembered anything later.I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more.Don’t take easy classes just to have a simple year.If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful! While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, they’re also around in high schools.I have a lot of friends who promised they’d never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will reg ret it when you’re applying for (申请) college. The“friends” who say you’re a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It’s hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, butdon’t follow their footsteps.Create you r own path in life and make your own decisions.21.What does the author think of high school?A.It requires hard work.B.There are very few activities.C.It’s hard to meet new people there.D.There isn’t enough time for homework.22.The author advises high school students to .A.give up sportsB.choose useful classesC.try their best to get good gradesD.get ready for tests the night before23.The last paragraph mainly tells us .A.about the trouble caused by drinking and smokingB.about the importance of making friendsC.not to go to any party in high schoolD.not to lose ourselves in high schoolBAs a kid, Joanna Buckley wasn't interested in science—until she had a chance to try it. That happened when she got a chemistry set as a gift.“Ov er the course of a few weeks, I'd completed every experiment. But in the process, I polluted my parent's dining room carpet and burnt the kitchen worktop with the spirit burner,” she says. Now science is Buckley's job. She works in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield in England. “I realize, firsthand, how important it is to have something or someone to show you why science is so great,” she says. Now the good news is that citizen science appears.Citizen science takes the fun of experimenting a step further than Buckley's at-home experiments. That's because these experiments are real, looking for novel answers.“Compared with a oneoff experiment, what's cool about citizen science is thatstudents get that this has a purpose,” says Am y Prunuske, who teaches microbiology and immunology at a medical college. “Students want to do a good job, because they know scientists are going to use the new data in their own research.”Jennifer Long's job is to coordinate (协调) education and outreach. She agrees with Prunuske. “Kids like that it's real. And they like that it's important, and that it matters.” Citizen science projects have made big discoveries. One found a previously unknown galaxy cluster (星系团). Another project helped assess how much damage a big earthquake had caused in Japan. And one of the first citizen science projects helped scientists learn where monarch butterflies go every winter. Some adults worry about teens losing interest in science. They hope that fun, exciting citizen science projects can help them keep engaged, Long says. Their behavior changes significantly prior to the quake and they resume normal functioning only a day after it. Gabriele Berberich of the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany presented these findings on Thursday at the European Geosciences Union annual meeting in Vienna according to Live Science.Berberich and her colleagues discovered that red wood ants preferred to build their colonies right along active faults in Germany. They counted 15,000 mounds (土堆) lining the faults. These faults are the places where the earth violently bursts in earthquakes.Using a special camera that tracked changes in activity, Berberich and her colleagues tracked the ants round the clock for three years. They found that the ants' behavior changed only when the quake was over magnitude (震级) 2. There were 10 earthquakes between magnitude 2.0 and 3.2 during this period, and many smaller ones. Humans can also sense quakes over magnitude 2 only.According to Berberich, normal ant activity consists of going about collecting food etc. during the day and resting in the night. But before an earthquake, the antsdidn't go back to their mound in the night and moved around outside it. This strange and abnormal behavior continued till a day after the earthquake, Berberich told a news conference, according to Live Science. How do ants know an earthquake is coming? Berberich suggested that they could either be picking up changing gas emissions or noting tiny changes in the Earth's magnetic fields (磁场). “Red wood ants have special cells which can detect changes in carbon dioxide levels. They also have special cells for detecting electromagnetic fields,” she said. Berberich and her colleagues are planning to continue the research in areas where there are more and bigger earthquakes.32.What's the meaning of the underlined word “resume” in Paragraph 1?A.Form.
