The funding for the centre has now been cut.I took part in the primary tuition project,aged11.The funding for that has also been cut now.It is a common problem across the country.Music is not an add-on,a“soft”subject or a luxu-ry—it is absolutely essential to our existence.Every child deserves the opportunity to experience its benefits. Until music is held in the same regard as the“core”subjects of our curriculum, our society will be worse off. We need joy, empathy(共情)and hope on this planet more than ever, and taking away children’s opportunity to develop musical skills is to set ourselves up for a fall. Despite the many brilliant programs and projects to en-courage young musicians(“Every Child a Musician,”“Awards for Young Musicians,”to name but a few),we are reaching a crisis point. We are in danger of destroy-ing creativity, innovation(创新)and expression.Learn-ing an instrument can help develop so many fundamental life skills. It promotes discipline, empathy, determination and cooperation as well as providing a sense of commu-nity and worth.Music has changed my life.It is a huge part of who I am.I have learned so much about the world through music and the inspiring figures I have met through it.I feel I have a duty to help ensure that others can benefit from its magic.Let us make it available to every single child.36.Why did the author raise the question on music education?A.The tuition fee for music training has risen.B.The band the author joined in has broken up.C.The project the author was in no longer exists.D.The funding for music education has been cut.37.What does the author think of the role of music?A.It can help children learn core subjects.B.It is fundamental to the growth of a child.C.It is important for dealing with social crises.D.It may offer children future job opportunities.38.What is the theme of the passage?A.Music training programs should be provided free.B.Music should be made popular across the coun-try.C.Music education should be available to every child.D.Music should be placed at the top of the curricu-lum.39.What is the author’s attitude towards music?A.Positive.B.Indifferent.C.Critical.D.Doubtful.Passage TwoIn2011,a dog owner named Robert uploaded a video titled“Guilty!”to YouTube. He had come home finding his two dogs near an empty bag of cat treats. The first dog behaved calmly. But the second dog,Denver, sat shaking in a corner, her eyes looking down, which made Robert believe it was she who had done it.Seeing her“apparent admission of guilt,”he yelled at her,“You did this!”Denver beat her tail nervously.“You know the routine. In the kennel(狗窝)!”Following the command, the dog shut herself in.The video quickly gathered a flood of comments. Since then,“dog shaming”has become popular on theInternet,as owners around the world posted beside notes shots of their trembling pets in which the dogs seemed to admit bad behavior. For instance,“I ate an extra large pizza,”admits a chocolate Lab.Human enthusiasm for guilty dogs seemed growing. But according to a researcher at Barnard College, what we consider to be a dog’s guilty look is no sign of guilt at all.In a2009study,the researcher had owners forbid their dogs from eating an attractive treat, and then asked the owners to leave the room. While each owner was gone, the researcher either removed the treat or fed it to the dog. When the owners returned, they were told—regardless of the truth—that their dogs either had or had not eaten it.If owners thought their dogs had done something wrong, blames followed, and guilty looks quickly emerged.Yet dogs who hadn’t eaten the treat were more likely to appear guilty than dogs who had—so long as their owners scolded them.Far from signaling regret, one group of researchers wrote in a2012paper, the guilty look of dogs is very likely a means to show obedience(顺从)to their owners.40.What did Robert want to show with his video on YouTube?A.Dogs’naughty behaviors.B.Dogs’trust in their owners.C.Dogs’apparent guilty looks.D.Dogs’conflict with other pets.41.How did people react to Robert’s video?A.They began to blame their own dogs.B.They began to read stories about dogs.C.They started to share dog-shaming photos.D.They started to show sympathy for his dog.42.What does“a chocolate Lab”in Paragraph2 refer to?A.A dog.B.A cat.C.A scientist.D.A researcher.43.Why do dogs wear a guilty look according to the researchers?A.To deceive their owners.B.To beg their owners for treats.C.To attract their owners’attention.D.To show obedience to their owners. In the race to the moon, who came in first? You might say the answer is Neil Armstrong,Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, the crew of Apollo11.Or you could represent for the crew of Apollo10,which reached the moon in May1969and then headed back to Earth without landing. But there is a much stranger answer to this ques-tion,depending on how much you care about humans and what your definition(定义)of reaching the moon might be.Before any people arrived at the moon, other animals had got there first. And unlike the dogs and monkeys that were made famous in early space shots and Earth orbits, the first creatures to reach the moon were a pair of tortoises,’s Amy Shira Teitel reminded us.The Soviet spacecraft(航天器)sent the animals around the moon—although not into its orbit—during a mission in the middle of September,1968.The un-manned(无人驾驶的)craft then returned to Earth and dashed into the Indian Ocean, after which the Russians recovered the craft.A month later,Soviet scientists revealed that the spacecraft had been a tiny ship, carrying the tortoises, wine flies, meal worms, plants, seeds, bacteria, and other living matter. The tortoises,as history records, lost about10per-cent of their body weight, but had a healthy appetite when they returned to Earth. In the following checkups comparing the animals to“stay-at-home turtles used as a test control,”most things seemed normal, aside from some vaguely explained minor problems with the liver. What this all means is that,as Teitel explained,“The first living beings to see an Earthrise from the Moon were Russian tortoises. However,as far as I can tell, the animals were not named.”44.According to the passage, which of the following reached the moon first?A.American astronauts.B.Dogs and monkeys.C.A pair of tortoises.D.Russian astronauts.45.What happened to the Soviet spacecraft?A.It stayed in the moon’s orbit.B.It disappeared in the outer space.C.It was wrecked during the mission.D.It was recovered after its return to Earth.46.What was the biggest change in the tortoises in Paragraph6?A.They had obviously lost weight.B.They lost their appetite for food.C.They had serious liver problems.D.They showed abnormal behaviors.47.What do Teitel’s words in the last paragraph imply?A.The tortoises were fond of seeing Earthrise.B.The tortoises were famous all over the world.C.The tortoises were not named after the Soviet spacecraft.D.The tortoises were not given due credit for their experience.Passage FourVegans try to live,as much as possible,in a way that avoids exploiting and being cruel to animals. This means following a plant-based diet.Vegans do not eat animals or animal-based products like meat, fish, seafood, eggs, honey and dairy products such as cheese. For many vegans, living a committed vegan lifestyle means not wearing clothes made from animal skins and avoiding any products which have been tested on ani-mals.Vegans argue that suffering is caused in the pro-duction of these foods. For example, they say that,on some dairy farms, male calves(小牛)are killed because they are too expensive to keep, and cows are killed when they get older and produce less milk.As for honey,veg-ans say that bees make honey for bees, not for humans, and that bees’health can suffer when humans take the honey from them.Vegans believe that the products they use and consume should be free from not just cruelty but any exploitation of animals. The main reason for going vegan is probably that they believe animals and all other sentient(有感知能力的)beings should have the right to life and freedom. However, there are other reasons.Vegans argue that the production of meat and other animal products is very bad for the environment. They point out that a huge quantity of water is needed to grow grain to feed animals in the meat industry. The enormous amount of grain which the meat industry needs often leads to forests being cut down and habitats(栖息地)being lost.In contrast, much low-er quantities of grain and water are needed to sustain a vegan diet.In addition, many vegans say that all the nu-tritious elements our bodies need are contained in a carefully planned vegan diet and that this type of diet helps prevent some diseases.48.What is a vegan in this passage?A.A person who is fond of eating meat.B.A person who keeps a plant-based diet.C.A person who likes to grow vegetables.D.A person who stays away from animals.49.Which of the following could be found in a veg-an’s diet?A.Potatoes.k.C.Honey.D.Eggs.50.What belief do vegans hold?A.Animal products are far more nutritious.B.Animals have the right to life and freedom.C.Animals can help improve the environment.D.Animal products lead to the rise of grain output.51.What does the author want to imply in this pas-sage?A.Going vegan helps to develop meat industry.B.Going vegan consumes more water and grain.C.Going vegan enables people to live a healthier life.D.Going vegan has been a lifestyle for the majori-ties.Passage FiveThere are many interesting news items in BP’s(英国石油公司)annual just published. But perhaps the most astonishing suggestion in the report is the idea that cutting back on plastic use could make matters worse. This might be what you would expect BP to say. After all,as one of the world’s biggest oil compa-nies,it makes a lot of money from selling products in plastic. But let’s look at the thinking behind BP’s argu-ment.If the current opposing idea about the use of plastic continues, there could be a worldwide ban on single-use plastics by2040.But the document argues that switch-ing plastic for other materials will have a bigger cost interms of energy and carbon emissions(排放).That sounds like the law of unintended(非故意的)conse-quences in action. When plastic bags are measured a-gainst paper or cotton substitutes,a BBC analysis found there wasn’t a great deal of difference in their environ-mental impact.Paper bags require fewer reuses to make them more environmentally friendly than single-use plastic bags, which means customers have to replace pa-per bags more frequently.Environmentalists, though, are not entirely con-vinced.They think that BP is stressing the problem of banning plastic for its own interest.“While it’s true that it takes less energy to produce and transport plastic than glass,a glass bottle can be reused dozens of times and is recyclable.Plus, materials like glass when they escape collection don’t go on polluting our oceans and rivers for hundreds of years,”said Louise Edge, from Greenpeace UK.Steps to encourage recycling are being taken. The UK,for example, will introduce a new tax on the manu-facture and import of plastic packaging in2022.There are also lots of developments taking place with alterna-tive materials. These may be the final defense against the unintended consequences of plastic bans.52.What is astonishing about BP’s annual report?A.Cutting back on plastic use may bring more problems.B.Cutting back on plastic use may affect product quality.C.BP has earned a lot of money by selling plastic products.D.BP has become one of the world’s biggest oil companies.53.Which of the following could be banned world-wide by2040?A.Recyclable glass bottles.B.Second-hand cotton bags.C.Reusable paper bags.D.Single-use plastic bags.54.According to environmentalists, what causes BP to oppose banning plastics?A.Its concern about the environment.B.Its consideration of its own interest.C.Its worry about the loss of consumers.D.Its desire to influence world economy.55.What measure is being taken by the UK to cut back on the use of plastics?A.Taxing on the use of plastic bags.B.Forbidding the import of plastic bags.C.Banning the manufacture of plastic bags.D.Developing alternative materials to plastic.V.Daily conversation(15points)Directions:Pick out appropriate expressions from the eight choices below and complete the following dialogues.Alice:Hi,Sam!It’s nice to see you here.Sam:Hi,Alice!Alice:56Sam:To my dorm.Alice:Great!Could you take this book to Peter?Sam:57Does Peter know what it is for?Alice:Yes.58Sam:59Are you well prepared for it?Alice:60See you tomorrow!Sam:See you!VI.Writing(25points)Directions:For this part, you are supposed to write an e-mail in about100-120words based on the following situation.Remember to write it clear-ly.61.你(Li Yuan)收到美国朋友Thomas的e-mail,他提及要来中国留学的想法。

More than 215 million people now call America “home”, but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost the customs and cultures of their original countries and have become “American”is really not true. In fact, what exists in America is more often a kind of “side-by-side”living in which groups of people from other countries often have kept many of their customs and habits. They join the general American society only in certain areas of their lives-such as in schools, business, and sports-but they keep many of their own native customs and manners socially and at home. This living “side-by-side’’has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are very different from one another. However, there are also great advantages that come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There is great freedom of choice among ideas and dress, food, and social customs in America.Everyone can find some part of his or her familiar world in the United States, in churches, music, food, national groups, or newspapers.1. Home for the People.D. “Side-by-Side”Living Style in America.Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:There is perhaps, no other sport in the world quite so exciting as skiing. For viewers, it is a spectacle of unsurpassed beauty(无与伦比的奇观). For skiers, it is a vivid personal experience, a thrilling test of mind, muscle, and nerves. And more and more, Americans are discovering this thrill for themselves. Not too long ago, skiing had virtually no part in the American sports scene. If it was thought of at all, it was purely as a European sport. Then came the 1932 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York. Americans got their first good look at skiing and made for the hills. Today ski trains make regular runs from our cities to the great, white outdoors. Lodges dot the mountain sidesoffering skiers the warmth of their firesides. In addition to joy and excitement, skiing offers other attractions. It is a comparatively inexpensive sport, and, for the young, the art of skiingis often mastered in a very short time. The special thrill of skiing is well described by Buddy Werner. “It is all up to you,”he says. “No teammates can help. You’re alone. It’s you against the snow, the mountains, yourself. You’re a warrior (勇士).”6. What is the author’s main point?A. Skiing, the most exciting sport in the world.B. Skiing, the most inexpensive sport in Lake Placid, New York.C. Skiing, the most popular sport in America.D. Skiing, the most thrilling sport in Europe.7. By the expression “made for the hills,”the author means that _________.A. Americans took up skiingB. One of the attractions for young people taking up skiing is that _________.A. they can enjoy the warmth of firesides in the lodgesB. they have teammates while skiingC. the skill of skiing can be mastered in a short timeD. they can later well describe the special thrill of skiing like Buddy WernerQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:One hundred and thirteen million Americans have at least one bank-issued credit card. They give their owners automatic credit in stores, restaurants, and hotels, at home, across the country, and even abroad, and they make many banking services available as well. More and more of these credit cards can be read automatically, making it possible to withdraw or deposit money in scattered locations, whether or not the local branch bank is opened. For many of us the “cashless society”is not on the horizon-it’s already here. While computers offer these conveniences to consumers, they have many advantages for sellers too. Electronic cash registers can do muchmore than simply ring up sales. They can keep a wide range of records, including who sold what, when, and to whom. This information allows businessmen to keep track of their list of goods by showing which items are being sold and how fast they are moving. Decisions to record or return goods to suppliers can then be made. At the same time these computers record which hours are busiest and which employees are the most efficient, allowing personnel and staffing assignments to be made accordingly. And they also identify preferred customersfor promotional campaigns. Computers are relied on by manufacturers for similar reasons. Computer-analyzed marking reports can help to decide which products to emphasize now, which to develop for the future, and which to drop. Computers keep track of goods in stock, of raw materials on hand, and even of the production process itself.Numerous other commercial enterprises, from theaters to magazines publishers, from gas and electric utilities to milk processors, bring better and more efficient services to consumers through the use of computers.11. According to the passage, the credit card enables its owner to _________.A. withdraw as much money from the bank as he wishesB. obtain more convenient services than other people doC. enjoy greater trust from the storekeeperD. cash money wherever he wishes to12. A hundred years or so ago only one out of every five Americans at work was employed. Today only one out of five is not employed but working for himself. And when 50 years ago “being employed”meant working as a factory laborer or as a farmhand, the employee of today is increasingly a middle-class person with a substantial formal education, holding a professional or management job requiring intellectual and technical skills. Indeed, two things have characterized American society during these last 50 years: middle-class and upper-class employees have been the fastest-growing groups in our working population-growing so fast that the industrial worker, that oldest child of the Industrial Revolution, has been losing in numerical importance despite the expansion of industrial production.Yet you will find little if anything written on what it is to be anemployee. You can find a great deal of very dubious advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion. You can also find a good deal of work in a chosen field. whether it be the mechanist’s trade or bookkeeping (会计). Every one of these trades requires different skills, sets different standards, and requires a different preparation. Yet they all have employees hip (雇员身份) in common. And increasingly, especially in the large business or in government, employee ship is more important to success than the special professional knowledge or skill. Certainly more people fail because they do not know the requirements of being an employee than because they do not adequately possess the skills of their trade; the higher you climb the ladder, the more you get into administrative or executive work, the greater the emphasis on ability to work within the organization rather than on technical abilities or professional knowledge.16. It is implied that 50 years ago ___________.A. 80%of American working people were employed in factoriesB. 20%of American intellectuals were employeesC. the percentage of intellectuals in the total work force was almost thesame as that of industrial workersD. the percentage of intellectuals working as employees was not so largeas that of industrial workers17. According to the passage, with the development of modern industry, _____.A. factory laborers will overtake intellectual employees in numberB. there are as many middle—class employees as factory laborersC. employers have attached great importance to factory laborersD. the proportion of factory laborers in total employee population hasDecreased18. Reading prehension(60 points)Directions:There are five reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by four questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D.Choose the best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneMusic is part of the structure of our society; it sits at the heart of human experience and enriches (丰富)so many lives. Why, then, is it not central to our education system? This is a question I recently put forward to an all—party group on music education.I am 20 years old and began playing the piano at the Barracudas Band in Barrow—in—Furness, aged seven. The funding for the centre has now been cut. I took part in the primary tuition project, aged 11. The funding for that has also been cut now. It is a mon problem across the country.Music is not an add—on, a“soft”subject or a luxury-it is absolutely essential to our existence. Every child deserves the opportunity to experience its benefits. Until music is held in the same regard as the“core”subjects of our curriculum, our society will be worse off. We need joy, empathy(共情)and hope on this planet more than ever, and taking away children’s opportunity to develop musical skills is to set ourselves up for a fall. Despite the many brilliant programs and projects to encourage young musicians (“Every Child a Musician,”“Awards for Young Musicians,”to name but a few), we are reaching a crisis point. We are in danger of destroying creativity, innovation(创新)and expression. Learning an instrument can help develop so many fundamental5 / 26life skills. It promotes discipline, empathy, determination and cooperation as well as providing a sense of munity and worth.Music has changed my life. It is a huge part of who I am. I have learned so much about the world through music and the inspiring figures I have met through it. I feel I have a duty to help ensure that others can benefit from its magic. Let us make it available to every single child.36.Why did the author raise the question on music education?A.The funding for music education has been cutB.The band the author joined in has broken upC.The project the author was in no longer existsD.The tuition fee for music training has risen37.What does the author think of the role of music?A.It is important for dealing with social crisesB.It may offer children future job opportunitiesC.It is fundamental to the growth of a childD.It can help children learn core subjects38.What is the theme of the passage?A.Music education should be available to every childB.Music training programs should be provided freeC.Music should be placed at the top of the curriculumD.Music should be made popular across the country39.What is the author’s attitude towards music?A.PositiveB. CriticalC. DoubtfulD. Indifferent.6 / 26Passage TwoIn 2011, a dog owner named Robert uploaded a video titled“Guilty!”to YouTube. He had e home finding his two dogs near an empty bag of cat treats. The first dog behaved calmly. But the second dog, Denver, sat shaking in a corner, her eyes looking down, which made Robert believe it was she who had done it. Seeing her“apparent admission of guilt,”he yelled at her,“You did this!”Denver beat her tail nervously. “You know the routine. In the kennel(狗窝)!”Following the mand, the dog shut herself in.The video quickly gathered a flood of ments. Since then,“dog shaming”has bee popular on the internet, as owners around the world posted beside notes shots of their trembling pets in which the dogs seemed to admit bad behavior. For instance,“I ate an extra large pizza,”admits a chocolate Lab. Human enthusiasm for guilty dogs seemed growing. But according to a researcher at Barnard College, what we consider to be a dog’s guilty look is no sign of guilt at all. In a 2009 study, the researcher had owners forbid their dogs from eating an attractive treat, and then asked the owners to leave the room. While each owner was gone, the researcher either removed the treat or fed it to the dog. When the owners returned, they were told—regardless of the truth—that their dogs either had or had not eaten it. If owners thought their dogs had done something wrong, blames followed, and guilty looks quickly emerged. Yet dogs who hadn’t eaten the treat were more likely to appear guilty than dogs who had—so long as their owners scolded them. Far from signaling regret, one group of researchers wrote in a 2012 paper, the guilty look of dogs is very likely a means to show obedience(顺从)to their owners.40.What did Robert want to show with his video on YouTube?7 / 26A.Dogs’ conflict with other petsB. Dogs’ naughty behaviorsC. Dogs’ trust in their ownersD. Dogs’ apparent guilty looks41.How did people react to Robert’s video?A.They started to share dog-shaming photosB.They began to blame their own dogsC.They began to read stories about dogsD.They started to show sympathy for his dog.42.What does“a chocolate Lab”in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.A scientistB. A dogC. A researcherD. A cat43.Why do dogs wear a guilty look according to the researchers?A.To attract their owners’ attentionB. To deceive their ownersC. To beg their owners for treatsD. To show obedience to their ownersPassage ThreeIn the race to the moon, who came in first? You might say the answer is Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, the crew of Apollo 11. Or you could represent for the crew of Apollo 10, which reached the moon in May 1969 and then headed back to Earth without landing. But there is a much stranger answer to this question, depending on how much you care about humans and what your definition(定义)of reaching the moon might be. Before any people arrived at the moon, other animals had got there first. And unlike the dogs and monkeys that were made famous in early space shots and Earth orbits, the first creatures to reach the moon were a pair of tortoise s, Discovery’s Amy Shira Teitel reminded us.8 / 26The Soviet spacecraft(航天器)sent the animals around the moon—although not into its orbit—during a mission in the middle of September, 1968. The unmanned(无人驾驶的)craft then returned to Earth and dashed into the Indian Ocean, after which the Russians recovered the craft.A month later, Soviet scientists revealed that the spacecraft had been a tiny ship, carrying the tortoises, wine flies, meal worms, plants, seeds, bacteria, and other living matter. The tortoises, as history records, lost about 10 percent of their body weight, but had a healthy appetite when they returned to Earth. In the following checkups paring the animals to“stay—at—home turtles used as a test control,”most things seemed normal, aside from some vaguely explained minor problems with the liver. What this all means is that, as Teitel explained,“The first living beings to see an Earthrise from the Moon were Russian tortoises. However, as far as I can tell, the animals were not named.”44.According to the passage, which of the following reached the moon first?A.A pair of tortoisesB. American astronautsC. Russian astronautsD. Dogs and monkeys45.What happened to the Soviet spacecraft?A.It was wrecked during the missionB.It was recovered after its return to EarthC.It stayed in the moon’s orbitD.It disappeared in the outer space46.What was the biggest change in the tortoises in Paragraph 6?A.They showed abnormal behaviorsB. They had serious liver problems9 / 26C. They lost their appetite for foodD. They had obviously lost weight47.What do Teitel’s words in the last paragraph imply?A.The tortoises were fond of seeing EarthriseB.The tortoises were not given due credit for their experienceC.The tortoises were not named after the Soviet spacecraftD.The tortoises were famous all over the worldPassage FourVegans try to live, as much as possible, in a way that avoids exploiting and being cruel to animals. This means following a plant-based diet. Vegans do not eat animals or animal—based products like meat, fish, seafood, eggs, honey and dairy products such as cheese. For many vegans, living a mitted vegan lifestyle means not wearing clothes made from animal skins and avoiding any products which have been tested on animals.Vegans argue that suffering is caused in the production of these foods. For example, they say that, on some dairy farms, male calves(小牛)are killed because they are too expensive to keep, and cows are killed when they get older and produce less milk. As for honey, vegans say that bees make honey for bee, not for humans, and that bees’ health can suffer when humans take the honey from them. Vegans believe that the products they use and consume should be free from not just cruelty but any exploitation of animals. The main reason for going vegan is probably that they believe animals and all other sentient(有感知能力的)beings should have the right to life and freedom. However, there are other reasons. Vegans argue that the production of meat and other animal products is very bad for the environment. They point out that a huge quantity of water is needed to grow grain to feed animals in the meat industry. The enormous amount of grain which the meat industry needs often leads to forests being cut down and habitats(栖息10 / 26地)being lost. In contrast, much lower quantities of grain and water are needed to sustain a vegan diet. In addition, many vegans say that all the nutritious elements our bodies need are contained in a carefully planned vegan diet and that this type of diet helps prevent some diseases.48.What did“doing nothing”mean to the space engineer at first?A.Outdoor activitiesB. A waste of timeC. Few daily schedulesD. More family hours48.What is a vegan in this passage?A.A person who likes to grow vegetablesB.A person who is fond of eating meatC.A person who keeps a plant-based dietD.A person who stays away from animals49.Which of the following could be found in a vegan’s diet?A.EggsB. HoneyC. MilkD. Potatoes50.What belief do vegans hold?A.Animals can help improve the environmentB.Animals have the right to life and freedomC.Animal products lead to the rise of grain outputD.Animal products are far more nutritious51.What does the author want to imply in this passage?A.Going vegan consumes more water and grainB.Going vegan enables people to live a healthier lifeC.Going vegan helps to develop meat industry11 / 26D.Going vegan has been a lifestyle for the majoritiesPassage FiveThere are many interesting news items in BP’s(英国石油公司)annual Energy Outlook just published. But perhaps the most astonishing suggestion in the report is the idea that cutting back on plastic use could make matters worse. This might be what you would expect BP to say. After all, as one of the world’s biggest oil panies, it makes a lot of money from selling products in plastic. But let’s look at the thinking behind BP’s argument. If the current opposing idea about the use of plastic continues, there could be a worldwide ban on single—use plastics by 2040. But the document argues that switching plastic for other materials will have a bigger cost in terms of energy and carbon emissions (排放).That sounds like the law of unintended (非故意的)consequences in action. When plastic bags are measured against paper or cotton substitutes, a BBC analysis found there wasn’t a great deal of difference in their environmental impact. Paper bags require fewer reuses to make them more environmentally friendly than single-use plastic bags, which means customers have to replace paper bags more frequently.Environmentalists, though, are not entirely convinced. They think that BP is stressing the problem of banning plastic for its own interest.“While it’s true that it takes less energy to produce and transport plastic than glass, a glass bottle can be reused dozens of times and is recyclable. Plus, materials like glass when they escape collection don’t go on polluting our oceans and rivers for hundreds of years,”said Louise Edge, from Greenpeace UK.Steps to encourage recycling are being taken. The UK, for example, will introduce a new tax on the manufacture and import of plastic packaging in 2022. There are also lots12 / 2613 / 26of developments taking place with alternative materials. These may be the final defense against the unintended consequences of plastic bans.52. What is astonishing about BP’s annual report?A. BP has earned a lot of money by selling plastic productsB. Cutting back on plastic use may bring more problemsC. BP has bee one of the world’s biggest oil paniesD. Cutting back on plastic use may affect product quality53. Which of the following could be banned worldwide by 2040?A. Second —hand cotton begsB. Reusable paper bagsC. Single —use plastic bagsD. Recyclable glass bottles54. According to environmentalists, what causes BP to oppose banning plastics?A. Its consideration of its own interestB. Its worry about the loss of consumersC. Its desire to influence world economyD. Its concern about the environment55. What measure is being taken by the UK to cut back on the use of plastics?A. Forbidding the import of plastic bagsB. Banning the manufacture of plastic bagsC. Taxing on the use of plastic bagsD. Developing alternative materials to plasticV. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Passage OneTracy McGrady is a real-life superstar. He spent the summer traveling in Europe, working with Adidas on his latest basketball shoe and playing with Team U.S.A. in an Olympic qualifying game. He also spent countless hours in the gym. “I work on things every day in the off-season, ”says McGrady, 24, an All-Star guard with the National Basketball Association‟s Orlando Magic. Until McGrady was 17, few outside his tiny hometown knew of his skills. He was raised mostly by his grandmother in a rough part of town. Sports were his escapes. To gain more exposure for his basketball skills, McGrady transferred to play his senior season at Mount Zion Christian Academy in North Carolina. After leading the Mighty Warriors to a 26-2 record that season, McGrady was named Player of the Year by a national newspaper. At 18, McGrady was starring for Toronto by the end of his new players‟ season. But he wanted to become one of the NBA‟s elite (精英), so he hired a trainer and beban intense workouts. It‟s not uncommon for McGrady, who signed with Orlando in 2002, to shoot 200 jumpers after practice, grab a healthy bite to eat and go to work out with the Los Angeles Lakers‟ Shaquille O‟Neal, who owns a home in Orlando. “He‟s stayed at a high level, ”Orlando coach Doc Rivers says of McGrady. “A lot of young players can play a good 20 minutes, or have a great month. Tracy does it all season on both ends.” To be that goood takes a lot of work. To be better takes even more. McGrady is ready for the challenge, because he knows what he wants. “I don‟t want to be one of those players that‟s known for being a great player that never won a championship, ”McGrady says. “I want a title.”16.Whnich of the following teams has McGrady NOT so far played for? The sentence “Sports were his escapes ”(Line 2, Paragraph 2) can best mean that _________.a. sporting activities were the means for him to get fullest happiness by B. physical exercises were the only way to relieve him of his pains C. he didn‟t want to do more things than sportiveactivities D. sports enabled him to run away from his hometownPassage TwoLast December‟s earthquakes in the Iranian city of Bam took a huge death toll-roughly 40,000 people-largely because of the collapse of thousands of mud-brick buildings, If a group of researchers in India are successful, the earthquake might not be as destructive. British and Indian engineers are developing earthquake-proof housing using a cheap, universal material:bamboo. They designed a model house built around waterproof bamboo-sheet roofing and bamboo-reinforced concrete walls. Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single bar through the center of the letter.Passage OneChildren in the United States are exposed to many influences other than that of their families. Television is the most significant of these influences, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children start attending school.Parents are concerned about the lack of quality in television programs for children. The degree of violence in many of these shows also worries them. Studies indicate that, when children are exposed to violence, they may become aggressive or insecure. Parents are also concerned about the commercials that their children see on television. Many parents would like to see fewer commercials during programs for children. And some parents feel that these shows should not have any commercials at all because young minds are not mature enough to dealwith the claims made by advertisers.Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents approve of. The most famous of these is Sesame Street, which tries to give preschool children a head start in learning the alphabet(字母)and numbers. It also tries to teach children useful things about the world in which they live.Even though most parents and educators give Sesame Street and shows like it high marks for quality, some critics argue that all television, whether educational or not, is harmful to children. These critics feel that the habit of watching hours of television every day turs children into bored and passive (被动的)consumers of their world rather than encouraging them to become active explorers of it.11.Which of the following statements is NOT based on the passage?A. Parents are worried about the influence from television on their children.B. Television has much influence on children.C. Both parents and their children like watching educational television.D. Some critics think that television is no good for children.12. In what ways do children suffer from television?A. They become the victims of social violence.B. They spend hours watching television instead of doing school work.C. The programs make the children lose interest in the world.D. The programs make the children spend too much of their parents’money.13.Parents would not like their children to see commercials because____A. they think that their children are not old enough to handle advertisingB. commercials teach children alphabet and numbersC. commercials help to sell productsD. they don't like commercialscational television is widely appreciated because________A.it does have the same commercials as othersB. it offers programs for both children and their parentsC. many parents like the programs it offers for their childrenD. children can learn some school subjects before they go to school15.Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?A. Watching Too Much Television May Be Harmful to Young MindsB. Television Is More Harmful than EducationalC. Television's Influence on ChildrenD. More Educational TelevisionPassage TwoToday just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have undergone an “agricultural revolution". On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records, so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for hog producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance ofcomputers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand"” that wil l be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make startling changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete mobilization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.16. Which sentence is the main idea of the whole passage?A. The first sentence of the first paragraphB. The first sentence of the second paragraph.C. The first sentence of the third paragraph.D. The last sentence of the second paragraph.17. According to the passage, computers can not help farmersdecide_____A. how much money they can earn from their productsB. whether to plant a certain kind of cropC. what livestock to raiseD. when to sell their products18.Which of the following statements is true?A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.B. Both computers and robots have been in use on today's farms.C. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present.D. Students at agricultural colleges must take computer classes because they can do nothing without the help of computers on today's farms.19. According to the engineers, _______ will be done by robots in the near future.A. most of the farm workB. milking cowsC. all farm workD. all the work20.What is the best title for the whole passage?A. Computer, Farmers, Best FriendB. Farmers in the FutureC. Computers and RobotsD. The Agricultural RevolutionPassage ThreeAn idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at thesame time.In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit(追求)to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched the“ If All of Seattle Read the Same Book”project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the“ One Book, One Chicago”program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about the plot and characters. The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium- sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity can be achieved. Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.Ultimately, as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.21. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?A. To invite authors to guide readers.B. To encourage people to read and share.C. To involve people in community service.D. To promote the friendship between cities.22.Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?A. They had little interest in reading.B. They were too busy to read a book.C. They came from many different backgrounds.D. They lacked support from the local government.23. According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?A. In large communities with little sense of unity.B. In large cities where libraries are far from home.C. In medium-sized cities with a diverse populationD. In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.24. The underlined words“shared a word”in the last parag raph probably mean _________A. exchanged ideas with each otherB. discussed the meaning of a wordC. gained life experienceD. used the same language25.According to Nancy, the degree of success of the project is judged by_______A. the careful selection of a proper bookB. the growing popularity of the writerC. the number of people who benefit from readingD. the number of books that each person readsPassage FourDiana Jacobs thought her family had a workable plan to pay for college for her 2l-year-old twin sons: a combination of savings, income, scholarships, and a modest amount of borrowing. Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart.“I have two kids in college, and I want to say come home', but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education, " says Jacobs. The Jacobs family did work out a solution: They asked and received more aid from the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan (贷款) program. They will each graduate with S20,000 of debt, but at least they will be able to finish school. With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear more families like the Jacobs. More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around. At the same time, tuition(学费) continues to rise. A report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increased 439% during the past 20 years, while average family income rose just 147%. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade, “If we go on this way for another 25 years, we won't have an afford able system of higher education, " says Patrick M. Callan, president of the center.“ The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however, is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.26. According to the first paragraph, why did the plan of Jacobs family fail?A. The twins wasted too much money.B. The father was out of work.C. Their saving ran out.D. The family fell apart.27.How did the Jacobs manage to solve their problem?A. They asked their kids to come home.B. They borrowed $20,000 from the schoolC. They encouraged their twin sons to do part-time jobs.D. They got help from the school and the federal government.28.Financial aid administrators believe that___________A. more families will face the same problem as the JacobsesB. the government will receive more letters of complaintC. college tuition fees will double soonD. America's unemployment will fall29. What can we learn about the middle class families from the text?A. They blamed the government for the tuition increaseB. Their income remained steady in the last decade.C. They will try their best to send kids to college.D. Their debts will be paid off within 25 years.30.According to the last paragraph, the government will________ .A. provide most students will scholarshipsB. dismiss some financial aid administratorsC. stop the companies from making student loansD. go on providing financial support for college studentsPart III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions:There are 20 incomplete sentences in this part .For each sentence there are four choices marked A, B, Cand D.
