1. Listening 1OK, everyone, what I want to do today is continue our discussion about cities and the challenges they face, and, I’d like to focus on the city of Venice, in Italy, which is an extraordinary example. So, to begin with, let’s review a few of the points we’ve discussed so far. Remember that, for centuries, the city has been struggling with the problem of flooding. As you know, the regular floodwaters—called the acqua alta—are a big problem in the city. You may also recall(想起)that the government has started the innovative(创新的)MOSE project to build water barriers and stop flooding from the ocean. Now, flooding is an important issue, but many Venetians say that the city has more serious problems than the acqua alta or the MOSE project. And most of these problems have to do with tourism. Of course, tourism has both the positive and negative side—tourism is extremely profitable. But the problem in Venice is too many tourists. For example, in 2007 the number of Venetian residents was 60,000. And what do you think the number of visitors to Venice was in that year? Twenty-one million! Recently, on a single holiday weekend in May, 80,000 tourists visited the city. Public parking lots filled up and were closed. And tourists walked through the streets eating and drinking and leaving a lot of trash behind. The result is that Venice’s city services justcan’t handle(处理,应对) so many people. The city has to pay more and more money for garbage collection to clean up all of the trash. In addition, public transportation on the famous boats and gondolas(平底船) is so crowded that Venetian residents(居民)can barely find room to get on.Along with trash and crowded transportation, city residents also have to deal with higher prices for food and for housing. Food prices continue to rise around the city. Some cafés charge as much as 13 U.S. dollars for a soft drink! In the Rialto Market—an area with many shops and stores—some of the grocery(食品,杂货)stores have been replaced by souvenir shops, which means that Venetians have fewer places to buy their groceries. In popular tourist areas, rent has almost tripled(三倍), and many small local businesses —for example, toy(玩具)stores and hardware(五金)stores—can’t afford to pay.Let me add that there is a serious housing problem in Venice. At one time, there were regulations(规章)making it illegal to convert(改装)residential buildings into hotels. But a law in 1999 removed those regulations, and the housing problem got even worse. Since then, the number of hotels and guesthouses has increased by 600 percent, and the number of houses that are available for local residents has gone down. These days, housing is only affordable for the very rich or for people who already own houses becausethey’ve been passed down by family. Young Venetians simply can’t afford to buy any property (财产)in the city. This has forced a huge number of Venetian residents to move out of the city. Thirty years ago, the population of Venice was around 120,000. Now it’s less than 60,000.So, why does Venice continue to encourage tourism when it causes so many problems? Mainly it’s because tourism in Venice generates(产生)more than two billion U.S. dollars a year in revenue (税)—and many think that the amount is much higher. Also, there’s a lot of financial pressure on Venice. The cleaning of canals(水道), restoration(恢复)of old structures, and the MOSE project are all very expensive. Tourism brings in money to help the city solve these problems.Another point I want to make is that many people in Venice have jobs related to tourism. As more tourists come to the city, hotels, restaurants, and museums need to hire more workers. In fact, the city of Venice has a lower unemployment rate than the rest of Italy, and it’s likely a result of the tourism industry. Some people think that Venice is to blame for its own problems—that these problems are the result of greed for tourists’money. There’s a lot of talk about limiting tourists, taxing tourists, and even asking tourists to avoid the busy seasons of Easterand Carnival. However, as you can see, maximizing the number of tourists in Venice is also necessary. So, there seem to be no simple solutions to Venice’s tourism problem.

Unit1I am now a fourth-year student at college, but I can never forget my freshman year here. In general, it is a time filled with anticipation, some anxiety, and wonderful discoveries.College is a lot different from high school. Your freshman experience will definitely make an impression on you. So, what can you expect as you head off into the wonderful world of higher education? The first thing you’ll notice is the workload. It will b e heavier than you ever experienced before. The major challenges of college work are the large amount of reading and writing, and the short deadlines. A related effect that can be brought on by the workload is doubt, frustration, and possibly loneliness. Y ou’ll be away from the comforts and friendships your home provided for you over the previous years.During the freshman year, you’ll be making a lot of new friends. But you should continue to be yourself. Select your friends with the same care and patience you have always shown. Believe it or not, your college friendships will be among the most satisfying and long-term of your life. It’s always exciting to discover how wonderfully diverse college relationships can be.You’ll also be on your own —you’ll be your own boss 24 hours a day, so to speak. But, remember, with freedom comes responsibility. You should always remember that you are at college with an anticipated mission. Don’t waste your time on meaningless things.During the freshman year, you may even start thinking about your future. Maybe a certain professor is especially inspiring. Perhaps your school has some great research going on. If some area of study attracts you, find out all you can about it. It might be the beginning of your lifetime career. Going to college is not just to get a degree — it is to find out who you really are and what you are really made for.

New System May Let You Appear Someplace You Have Never BeenThis is the VOA Special English Technology Report.A hologram is a three-dimensional image -- an image that appears to have height, width and depth.More than thirty years ago, Princess Leia gave her famous holographic plea for help in the original "Star Wars" movie. Since then, holograms have become bigger, better and more widely used. Now, researchers have developed a holographic telepresence system. Traditional telepresence systems are used in video conferencing. They present two-dimensional images. But the new system might be able to send a moving 3-D image of a person over great distances -- and show it in close to real time.Nasser Peyghambarian is the lead researcher for the project at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He says holographic technology can make people appear in places where they have never been.Nasser Peyghambarian: "People can see you just the way you are as if you've been there."With the new system, the image is refreshed so often that it seems to look like a person's natural movement. An important part of the system is a screen that can refresh the holographic image every two seconds. The screen is made from a special photorefractive material. In experiments, the researchers placed sixteen cameras in a half-circle. They took pictures of people from different positions. Then the researchers sent the images to a different place over the Internet.Lasers at the other end received the pictures and produced holographs on the screen. Mr. Peyghambarian says the new material permits the images to be continually written, erased and replaced.Nasser Peyghambarian: "Every image that you want to show only takes two seconds to write it. And therefore the next image comes in after that. And this capability allows this system to be used for, for example, telepresence -- that an object in onelocation now can be [virtually] transferred or can be shown in another location in 3-D."He says the more cameras and the more pictures that are used, the more realistic the holographic image appears. The researchers imagine their technology being used for things like 3-D maps and movies requiring no special glasses. Doctors could use it for telemedicine. But the researchers say their holographic telepresence system is still years away from completion.A report on the system appeared in the journal Nature. And that's the VOA Special English Technology Report, written by June Simms with Jessica Berman. You can learn about other new uses for 3-D technology at . You can also join us on Facebook and Twitter at VOA Learning English. We'll talk more about telepresence systems next week.
Unit2Hello, I’m Alberto. I’m a student of English, French, Portuguese and Italian. I would also love to learn Chinese and German in the near future. My mother tongue is Spanish and I have a degree in Political Science. I love to learn new languages, because I think it broadens my mind. Even though I still have some difficulty with verb tenses, I’m confident that with time and practice I’ll cope with them. I believe learning a new language besides your mother tongue can be useful, especially in a world where distances are shortened and people from different countries communicate with each other more frequently. Learning a new language can be a good experience, but only if you keep in mind that nothing is obtained without some effort. In my opinion, the best way to learn a language is to read a lot. It doesn’t matter what you read, but that you do it. Even if you don’t understand everything, your reading comprehension skill will improve remarkably. Also, if possible, watch a lot of television in that language, or listen to CDs. Maybe at first you won’t understand a word, but later you’d catch on to the rhythm of the langua ge. Good dictionaries are necessary, and books regarding vocabulary can be a plus. The Internet is also a useful tool. The language you choose to learn might seem a little difficult at first, or even totally strange, but you’ll get accustomed to it. Remember that the learning process is long, and that it never ends. However, it is also highly enjoyable.
Unit3The Birthday HeartOne day I was helping my mom preparing a picnic when my sisters arrived. They said, “Happy birthday, Mom!” and gave her some presents.I was sad. I had forgotten it was my mother’s birthday, but I didn’t want her to know that I had not remembered her birthday. I had one dollar in my piggy bank. With that I was sure that I could get a present that would show my mother how much I loved her.I went to the store. When I looked around, I suddenly realized that my dollar wouldn’t buy as much as I had thought it would. Then I saw a heart made of plastic. It contained typewriter correction paper.I knew that it would show my mother how much I loved her. It was ninety-nine cents.I took the heart to the cashier and gave her my dollar. She said that I didn’t have enough money because with tax the heart cost more than a dollar.I didn’t understand sales tax. All I understood was that I couldn’t give the heart to my mom. I went to put the heart back and the cashier asked me if it was my mom’s birthday. I nodded. Then she said that she could help me. She put some of her own pennies in the cash register with my dollar and gave me the heart in a bag. When my mother opened the bag and pulled out the heart, she exclaimed “What a beautiful present!” “It’s just what I need.” She put me on her lap and told me that she loved the heart and she loved me.I don’t remember many of the gifts that I have given my mother, but I will always remember the heart that I gave her on that birthday.
