商务英语BEC高级模拟试题带答案2015年商务英语BEC高级模拟试题带答案The Negotiating T able:You can negotiate virtually anything. Projects, resources, expectations and deadlines are all outcomes of negotiation. Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by companies to negotiate on their behalf . He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial. Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will recommend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying ‘yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr Cohen says that one of his strategies is to dress down so that the other side can relate to you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, For example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you moreapproachable. People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in , do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they have because people do not want to think their investment and energies have gone to waste. However , joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes , if this becomes too great , neither party may be prepared to see the deal through . More common is a corporate culture clash between companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.De Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses their request , they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If al else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lesson to be learned from watching and listening to children.1. Dr Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order toA put people at easeB remain detachedC be competitiveD impress rivals2. Many people say “no” to a suggestion in the beginning toA convince the other party of their point of viewB show they are not really interestedC indicate they wish to take the easy optionD protect their company’s situation3. Dr Cohen says that when you are trying to negotiate you shouldA adapt your style to the people you are talking toB make the other side feel superior to youC dress in a way to make you feel comfortable.D try to make the other side like you4. According to Dr Cohen, understanding the other person will help you toA gain their friendshipB speed up the negotiationsC plan your next move.D convince them of your point of view5. Deals sometimes fail becauseA negotiations have gone on too longB the companies operate in different waysC one party risks more than the other.D the lawyers work too slowly6. Dr Cohen mentions children’s n egotiation techniques to show that you shouldA be prepared to try every routeB try not to make people feel guiltyC be careful not to exhaust yourselfD control the decision-making process.参考答案:1B 2D 3A 4D 5B 6A。

High staff turnover can result in many problems. …example…Most companies hope to recruit the right type of person in the first place. However, too much emphasis on qualifications and not enough on personality often leads to a company attracting the right standard, but not the right kind of person. 8 They can also be used to identify existing staff who are suitable but who, initially may not have been considered. It is important for companies to understand why employees move on to another employer. 9 They can be the key to identifying any problem areas that might exist within an organization. It is essential therefore that employees who are about to disappear are interviewed before they depart, in order to discover why they are leaving.Analysis of these interviews has shown that a lack of appreciation is one of the main factors causing employees to look elsewhere for work. Managers should provide regular feedback to their staff. 10 If this is not done, employees will think their efforts are not appreciated.Communications within the organization are another consideration. 11 This can be avoided through regular departmental and inter-departmental meetings, which are extremely valuable as a means of passing on information throughout the company and keeping employees up to date with recent developments. They also serve to provide the opportunity for employees to express their opinions.Paying staff according to how they perform is another way of recognizi ng employees’ efforts. If the company benefits froman employee’s extra effort, it is only reasonable that the employees should also receive some financial benefit. It is however important to avoid offering some member of staff the opportunity to improve their pay while excluding others. 12 In cases where such difficulties might exist, a planned career progression for an individual staff member means that the person knows exactly what to expect from the job and what is required from them.A.For example, when good work has been done it must be praised.B.This can easily happen, since it is not always possible to introduce productivity measurements into every, employee's work.C.In particular, employers are recognizing that these requirements will change as time goes by.D.Selection tests can be used to indicate a candidate's suitability for the job they are applying for.E.If these are poor, employees will feel left out.F.The reasons for staff resigning and the benefits offered by their new employersmust be recorded.G.One of the most serious of these is the cost of continually having to find and train replacements.。

Questions 23-30.As German broad money supply(M3)now seems set to exceed its target for the third year in a row, pressure on the Bundesbank is growing to ignore what Bundesbank president, Mr.Hans Tieteyer, calls an "important intermediate indicator". The Bundesbank itself has been strengthening the hand of critics of monetary targeting by lowering interest rates sharply despite very strong money supply growth in the past six months. Abandoning M3 now as a signpost for monetary policy would be a grave mistake for at least two reasons. First, there is on convincing evidence so far that the long-run relationship between money supply growth and inflation has ceased to exist. Publicly available independent studies , such as those from the Kiel institute of World Economics , have found some evidence for a short-term disturbance in the demand formoney in the wake of German unification. But they have failed to reject the hypothesis that the long-run demand for money has remained stable.Second, excessive money supply growth has reflected the partial monetary financing of government debt ,which ,if continued ,could threaten the purchasing power of the D-Mark.In recent months Bundesbank representatives and other observers have attempted to explain the rampant growth of money supply on the basis of portfolio shifts between money and "monetary capital" which means the longer-term liabilities of the credit institutions. It is excluded from M3.In reality, however, expansion of credit has been driving money supply growth. At the end of 1993, total bank credit amounted to about DM3, 800bn, M3 money to DMI , 900bn, and monetary capital to roughly DMZ , 100bn. With bank credit rising at an annual rate of 10. 3 per cent between the end of 1991 and the end of 1993 ,monetary capital would have to grow substantially above this rate to neutralize the effects of credit growth on M3.In fact, monetary capital GREw at an annual average rate of only 7. 7 pre cent ,so the annual rise of M3 during this period was 8. 7 per cent.If the expansion of bank lending had been used to finance investment in future productive capacity ,there would have been little reason to worry. However, between the second half of 1990 and the second half of 1993, real investment in machinery and equipment in united Germany declined by about 4 per cent. This suggests that most of the credit was used for housing construction and consumption. An important source of the demand for bank credit was the public sector. Between the end of 1989 and mid-1993 ,public debt rose by 52 per cent. By-the end of 1994 ,the rise will be more than 115 percent. The lion's share of this increase was incurred to finance transfers to east Germany. Since the appetite of German domestic savers for government bonds was not sufficient to absorb the `new debt, the government exported part of it by selling bonds abroad ,and allowed the monetization of another part.【。

Questions 23 to 30.Interviews conducted by members of the ECE, (Economic Committee of Europe) with enterprises engaged in third-market cooperation have identified several areas in which problems occurred. Many of these problems are characteristic of the particular industrial sector in which the cooperation takes place and cannot be generalized to supply to other sectors. When vehicles and machinery made under cooperation arrangements are launched on new markets, substantial modifications may have to be made in basic features. Such changesmay be dictated by a lack of servicing facilities for the prescribed frequency of service for the standard model and an operating environment that is different form that prevailing in either of the partner's home markets. Since acceptance of the product in question by the client depends upon the manufacturer successfully satisfying his specifications, the partners must closely coordinatetheir ordering procedures in such a way that these changed specifications are communicated in time to the manufacturing plants. If the producing enterprise has a long lead time as a result of internal planning procedures, it may find it difficult to make the necessary changes in the standard model during the time available, to the detriment of its relations with clients in the third market. Clearly, this is an area in which effective managerial techniques can prevent such problems from arising.Rapid fluctuations in demand are characteristic of the market for many of the chemical products manufactured under east-west cooperation arrangement. In order to respond to such shifts in demand, the supplying enterprise must remain in close touch with the market, either directly or through its western partner, in order to adjust its production schedules to take these shifts into account. Otherwise it may find itself with large inventories of unsaleable products while its partner may be in the difficult position of hastening to find4nalternativemarket for the amounts no longer required by the target market. In the turnkey-plant sector, partner enterpriese often discover that they derive totally different results from using the same local subcontractors. According to several western plant contractors interviewed, while the eastern partner obtained complete satisfaction from local suppliers, the western partner found little cooperation, forthcoming long delivery delays, and other shortcomings. This difference usually arises in the case of developing countries in which the western firm has no experience and the eastern enterprise may have been active for many years. Obviously in such cases it is recommended that the western firm rely on its partner's established links with local suppliers instead of attempting to deal with them on its own.Consumer goods make under cooperation arrangements and supplied to third markets often pass through a period of poor buyer acceptance, which is due to inappropriate or insufficient packaging. Since many branded consumer goods are distinguished from one another at the point of sale mainly by their packages ,the key to the successful introduction of a new product in a third market is correct assessement of consumer preferences. This assessment can best be carried out in the market-place by using up-to-date techniques for measuring buyer response to package shape, colour and presentation. Which partner should be responsible for conducting such testing, and。

2020年商务英语BEC高级模拟试题The Accountant at Your ServiceRuth Anderson is a tax expert for a firm of accountants, specializing in advising property developers and investors involved in property transactions. She’s now a partner, but first joined them as a graduate trainee, having taken a degree in French and Spanish at university. “I couldn’t decide what to do. I was seriously tempted to become an interpreter but did have this worry that when a machine could interpret I’d be out of a job. Then I thought, what do not know about? I knew nothing about business, and accountancy was a means to finding out and being paid at the same time. I didn’t intend to stay, but to my surprise, I enjoyed myself a lot.” So, interestingly, Ruth is not a typical accountant number cruncher. “I’m numerate but I’ve only got a maths qu alification I took at school.”She continues:“The main thing for me in accounting has always been the client contact. Accountancy has this dull image but it’s not working with numbers all the time, it’s a people-driven business. This is important when it comes to choosing potentially good accountants. I interview some very nervous applicants but I try hard to listen. I want them to calm down, so we can learn more about them. Someone who doesn’t like people won’t make a good account - they need to be goo d communicators.”On management generally, she says:“I know how I ought to behave but sometimes I don’t make the time to “walk the talk”. I’ve been ticked off for not praising my staffenough. I say, “but you must have realized that I thought that was well done”, but they say, “No, we want you to say it.” The time pressures have got tougher, like the speed of requests for information. One can just forget to say thank you. I do think it’s important to show you really appreciate someone’s work when they’v e busted a gut. I sometimes produce chocolates on a Friday for my team.”So how does she view the business world? “It’s changing in many ways. Things are moving fast, the world is more litigious. The temptation is to play it safe and get nobody into trouble. But we all need to be bolder than that. We need to encourage our people to innovate. Don’t blame the person who was innovative if things don’t work out. At least he tried.”Does she worry about the prospect of redundancy in an increasingly volatile job market? She says:“job-hunting in middle age is obviously worrying, especially if you have a family. But at least at forty to fifty you have a lot of experience to bring to marketing, management or finance. Ifit happened to me, I’d sit down and say,“What skills have I got? Where can they be used, and what do I enjoy?”Last year, Ruth spent four weeks on an advanced management program. There were people from every conceivable background and many were in very senior positions. She says, “It was ver y interesting. I learnt from their problems, how they manage, how they motivate, how they keep their staff trained.” She has done her own bit of serious management. Fifteen years ago she was asked to set up a new branch for her firm, and during the next eight years, with a lot ofmarketing, recruitment and staff counseling on her part as a senior manager, numbers grew to about 150. Eventually, she returned to the London office and one gets the impressionthat the stint organizing others was not absolute heaven. She admits:“I was definitely glad to get back to client service again.”15. Ruth Anderson says she became an accountant becausea. she wasn’t good enough to be an interpreter.b. she’d always been interested in maths.c. there were no other suitable jobs available at the time.d. it was a way of learning about business.16.
