所谓意群，是指意义上和语法结构上联系较为密切的一组词。
这一组词包括一些关键词和非关键词，其中关键词提供关键信息，而非关键词则用于表达辅助信息。
一般而言，在一个意群之内停顿是不允许的，否则会影响意思的表达或理解。
意群阅读是指我们在阅读文章时，不要以一个词为单位来阅读，而是以意群为单位来阅读，也就是把在意义和语法结构上有关联的几个词，连接成较完整的信息，成组成组地输入大脑。
以意群为单位进行阅读不仅能提高阅读速度，而且能克服指读、回视、重读等不良习惯，从而有助于快速而又准确地理解文章大意。
【典例1】This sort of operation, heart surgeons say, is the start of what may be the biggest change in their profession since heart bypass surgery (心脏搭桥手术) began nearly 30 years ago.【解析】我们可使用意群阅读法把他们分成四个阅读单位，即：This sort of operation, ／heart surgeons say, ／is the start of what may be the biggest change in their profession／since heart bypass surgery (心脏搭桥手术) began nearly 30 years ago.【典例2】So all healthy-minded people like making money—ought to like it and to enjoy the sensation of winning it, but the main object of their lives is not money; it is something better than money.【解析】我们可使用意群阅读法把他们分成五个阅读单位，即：So all healthy-minded people like making money／—ought to like it ／and to enjoy the sensation of winning it, ／but the main object of their lives is not money; ／it is something better than money.阅读过程中，把句子划分若干意群，通过眼球转动，扩大视幅，扫视整个意群，整体领会意思。
