My Teacher's Rubric for Grading English Essays

Hey there! My name is Emma and I'm in 5th grade. My

teacher Mrs. Lee just taught us about how she grades our English

essays and assignments. It's actually really interesting and useful

to know!

For our essays in middle school English class, Mrs. Lee uses a

rubric with 15 total points possible. A rubric is like a big checklist

that tells you exactly what you need to do to get a good score. It

has different categories that get scored separately.

The first category is "Content and Ideas" and it's worth 4

points. This means your essay has to be super interesting and

have great ideas that answer the prompt or question. You can't

just ramble about random stuff - it has to be focused and

relevant.

Mrs. Lee says for 4 points, your essay must:

Skillfully address all parts of the writing task

Include lots of relevant and thoughtful details and examples

Have a clear central idea or thesis statement

Show in-depth understanding and insight into the topic If your essay is just okay with the ideas and content, you

might only get 2 or 3 points. And if it's really bad and doesn't

make sense or answer the prompt at all, you could get 0 points in

this section. Yikes!

The next category is "Organization" and it's worth 3 points.

This is all about how well your essay is structured and flows

together in a logical way.

For 3 points, your essay must:

Have an engaging introduction that grabs the reader's

attention

Use effective transitions to connect ideas smoothly

Group related ideas into clear body paragraphs

Build to an insightful and well-developed conclusion

If your organization is a little messy but still follows some

structure, you might get 1 or 2 points. But if there's basically no

organization at all, it's 0 points.

After that is "Word Choice" for 2 points. This means using

advanced vocabulary that is super precise and paints a vivid

picture.

To get both points, your writing must: Use vivid and sophisticated word choices

Demonstrate a strong vocabulary

Skillfully use figurative language like metaphors and similes

If you only kind of try with your word choice, it's 1 point. And

if you use really basic vocabulary a little kid could use, it's 0

points. No "big" words at all? Too bad!

The next part is "Sentence Fluency" for 2 points. This is about

making your sentences flow nicely and not be choppy and

awkward.

For full credit, your sentences should:

Vary in length and structure

Be well-constructed with proper grammar

Have a natural, fluent sound when read aloud

If your sentences are just kind of bland but still follow the

rules, it's 1 point. But if they're super choppy and broken, it's 0

points.

After that is "Conventions" for 2 points, which means

following proper writing rules like spelling, capitalization, and

punctuation. You get:

2 points for few errors

1 point for several errors

0 points for many errors that really distract the reader

The last part is kind of a wildcard called "Publishing Traits"

for 2 points. This means making your paper look great with

formatting and meeting all the assignment requirements.

For full points it must:

Follow all formatting guidelines like margins, font, etc.

Meet length and genre requirements

Look polished and publication-ready

If you just kind of miss a few things, it's 1 point. But if you

totally ignore the requirements, it's 0 points!

So those are all the different areas Mrs. Lee scores. In total,

it's 15 points possible. She says 13-15 points is an A, 11-12 is a B,

9-10 is a C, 7-8 is a D, and anything 6 or below is an F. Earning an

A on essays can be really hard!

I think having a clear rubric actually helps a ton. It tells me

exactly what I need to focus on instead of just guessing. If I'm missing points in a certain area, I know to work harder on that

next time.

It does seem like a lot of specific little things to remember.

But I guess that's what separates okay writing from really great

writing worthy of an A. I just have to give it my best effort and

follow all the guidelines.

I hope this breakdown of the rubric helps you understand

how we get graded too! Let me know if you have any other

questions. Writing can be tough, but we're all learning together.

See ya!
