tenbeing creativeAre you a creative person, a creative thinker? You were created to be creative. The problem is most people have had their creative powers short-circuited. How has this happened? By our experiences and by what we have been told. Maybe you haven’t done so well in school. Or maybe you didn’t get into the “best” school. Therefore, from this experience, you conclude you must not be as smart or creative as others. Perhaps you were told from early childhood that you were not as creative as someone else in the family or someone else at school. After a while you begin to believe that this is true and become even less creative. This should not happen in your life! But I know it has to some degree. So, how can you overcome this and become the creative person you were meant to be? The answeris simple—sit down and dream. What I mean is this. Sit down witha pencil and begin to write out what you would like to be and do if you could do anything you wanted. Write out how you would accomplish your dream. Let noting limit your thinking. Not a lack of money, help, time, or anything else. Think again like a little child who believes anything is possible. You will suddenly find great creative resources within you begin to work. When you begin to think this way you will come up with new ideas and new ways to make those ideas come true. The greatest and most successful people in the history of the world often came out of terrible life circumstances. Yet, they dreamed and they dreamed their dreams so clearly that they became a reality in spiteof their circumstances. Make your dreams creative and make them happen.I always bother Jim to do the grocery shopping and other things. I hate that. But I can’t drive.I can take you. I need to do some shopping myself.Could you teach me how to drive sometime?Of course. But you have to get your Driver’s Permit first.Yes. I’ve already passed the exam.Really? Oh, do you have the Driver’s Permit with you now?Yes, I have it with me.Maybe we can start now. I think we can work on that for half and hour before we go to the grocery store. That’s great.I can’t reach the pedals.I kinda have long legs. You have to reach over the side of the seat, find the handle, pull up the handle and slide forward until you are comfortable.OOOOHHH!Ok?Now I’m too close.Push back a little bit. That’s better.Next, put on your seat belt. It’s the law. OK. Right foot only, the one on the right is the gas, the one in the middle is the brake…OK? To put it in gear, push down on the brake pedal, push in the button, push the shifter back to D, for drive. Now step on the gas.Sorry.That’s ok. Just push down a little bit on the gas, after we go around the parking lot a little---gently put your foot on the brake, until you are used to how much pressure to use.Where are we going now?Just keep going and face that way. You’re doing just fine. OK, stop here.Maybe I shouldn’t try to learn how to drive.Of course not.Otherwise, Jim will be taking you to the store forever.Everyone starts out like this. I did. I’ll try to be more patient. What should I do now?Gently push on the gas pedal. Just drive around the parking lot slowly until you get a feel for the car. Perhaps later we can go on the street. The street! I can’t go to the street.Eventually you will need to go on the highway, not only the street. OK, maybe not this time. Just relax and take it one step at a time. This is really scary.I know it is scary at first, but you’ll soon get the hang of it. You are a smartyoung woman, you’ll learn fast.I hope so. Oh no, someone else is driving across the parking lot!Don’t worry, they are way over there. They are not able to bother you. Just try to relax.I’ll try, but I won’t promise anything.I’m really happy for you. One year in America and you are a teacher. That’s pretty good.Actually ,it’s pretty scary. Why? You know your stuff like the palm of your hand. But teaching is far more different.I think you can do it standing on your head. Just go up there and teach. Just noting to it, right? It’s not that simple. I’m not that confident in my English. To prepare my lessons, I’ve been having to put down nearly every sentence I’m supposed to say to the class.See, you’re fully prepared for that. I don’t think you need to bother yourself about it.But I’m still nervous. What if they don’t understand me and I can’t get it, or I don’t know how to get myself across when I’m asked a question?Xin, take it easy. When you first came here I know it was hard for you. But believe me, you are a good English speaker. Y ou’re learned a lot about American culture and have the experience of being in America. You know, some of my friends at the Super Bowl party thought you had been in America for a long time. One of them even asked me if you were an “ABC”.Wow, you’re give me a big head.Besides, you are smart and diligent. You’ll definitely make it. So be relaxed. But I’ve never had any teaching experience. And American students are a lot different from Chinese students. They always have questions. I just can’t help worrying. That won’t do you any good. No matter what questions they challenge you with ,I think they’re more likely to be related to what you’re going to teach them. I see you’re spared no pains to prepare, so there’s no point in worrying about it. Hey, maybe I can show up at your first class to give you a hand. How’s that sound? That’s even worse .I can be more nervous. Why? I can go there as a student. And something comes up, I can help you out.I’m afraid I’ll have a distracted attention. All right, forget about my dumb idea.Well, pray about it then before you go to the classroom and act like you know exactly what you are doing –and you know exactly what you are doing. My father used to tell me. ”act enthusiastically and confidently, and you will be enthusiastic and confident. No disrespect to your dad, but that still sounds kindafake. No, it’s actually very good advice for anything that you do. There is something about attitude ,posture, and enthusiasm that actually give confidence. Psychologists have proved it. Somehow, acting confidently and enthusiastically actually changes your personality into being confident and enthusiastic. Try it.Well, Bill, actually I’m feeling much better now. I’ll give it a try.Good.it might change your life!Ni hao ma?Bu hao! What’s the matter? This Chinese class is driving me crazy. What’s wrong? What’s wrong? Everything. If I get the words right, the sentence structure is wrong. If I get the sentence structure right and the words right, the tones ate wrong. No one in China is ever going to understand me.I have lots of friends who speak English in China. They will help you like you helped me. We Chinese are friendly, and we like American people.Thanks. But I really want to communicate directly with Chinese people myself, like you are here with Americans. It seems impossible now. I feel like such an apple head. You know Bill, English was also hard for me,Ibegan to learn the language when I entered the junior high school and had learned it for nearly ten years till I came here. And I still had great difficulty communicating with Americans. But I know some foreigners stay in China for only one or two years and the can speak Chinese fluently.Well, it’s not me. I’m no that smart.Maybe it’s not so hard as you imagine. Take grammar for example, I thinkChinese is a lot easier cause it doesn’t have verb tenses.Well, that’s true. But it’s still too difficult for me.And the vocabulary is another point. Knowledge of 3000 to 4000Chinese characters is enough to read newspapers .But for English, even more than 10000 words far from enough. So perhaps to grasp only a few hundred basic Chinesecharacters you can actually handle everything in daily life.Wow, that’s encouraging. And most of the Chinese characters are pictophonetic , which means each one consists of a radical and a phonetic element. The radical often suggests the meaning of a character. So the first thing is to learn the Chineseradicals; there are only about 200 basic ones.Oh, that’s not too bad.And once you get to know the formation of the characters ,it’ll be easier to learn the language. I appreciate and respect you for trying to learn Chinese. And I understand your Chinese-sort of.Xin, you are so nice. You have been very nice to me this past year. We have become really good friends.Yes. It has been a lot more enlightening to meet a real Chinese person and talk with her and discuss ideas with her than to read the newspaper and what it says about China. It’s the people that really count. We should get to know each other as human beings, rather than as Chinese or Americans.Yes, as human beings. I am finding that we’re all the same underneath our different colors of skin. Because we all have the same dreams and hopes for ourselves and our countries.Knowing each other through language conversation is really the way to peach and understanding in the world. How true! It’s very important to take the study of language very seriously.Learning a different language is to learn a different way of thinking. As I have learned, it can change your life.NineThinkingAs a university student you are learning about a lot of different things. But if you are to learn to think, you will have to do that on your own. Thinking is nothing but the process of asking and answering questions about what we learn.Great thinker and researchers have always asked, “Is that really true?” about what they have read; or ”Do I agree?” with what they have heard. All human progress is preceded by questions. To find better answers about life than others you will have to ask better questions. Here are a few worth asking:Where did I come from? Why am I here? Is there a God?What is the purpose of mankind? Is there life after death? To find the answers we have to learn to think as we study. We will have to be open to new ideas, different from the oneswe have been taught. Two hindrances to great thinking are pride and materialism. Many peoplewho are at universities are filled with self-pride. Pride blinds peopleto realities, it stops the thinking process, and it focuses life on oneself. When this happens, there is little hope that real thinking will take place in that person’s life. The same is true of materialism-it focuses a person’s life on himself or herself. If you want to climb up the high mountain of understanding and wisdom you will have to be very careful that pride and materialism do not block your progress.Bill, have you ever been to an NBA game in person? I think it would be very exciting.Yeah, I went a few times. However, it’s pretty expensive so I can’t go very often. How about you ?I’ve never had the change to.I’ve only watched the games on TV, for it’s also very expensive to go to a professional basketball game in China.Yeah, but last time I went I got a free ticket. You did! How so?My friend’s dad received two tickets from the plate he works at .His father couldn’t go, so I went instead.Wow, that’s great! It was a lot of fun to watch the game at the Target Center, which is where the wolves played.Did you see Yao Ming? No, the Wolves were playing Sacramento that night, not Houston. It sounds like Yao Ming is pretty popular in China.Oh yes, there is always news about him in the newspapers and on TV. He has a large number of fans even among kids and has become a role model for many young people. He is great! He emerged as a top player in his first year in the NBA for the Houston Rockets. To be honest with you ,I’ve never heard of him before he came to America. It seems like he became a public figure overnight. Now he has done some TV commercials in the US, and his face is on billboards.Look, he just scored a basket! He is playing well tonight. I think he’s already scored over twenty points.Do you like to play basketball?I played a little in high school because of Michael Jordan. But I’m not very good at it. Sometimes I go to the gym and play with the guys. However ,I have to say I’m more of a football fan. Oooh, KG(kevin Garnett)just scored a dunk. The Wolves are up by twelve.Oh no!Hey, you are in Minnesota now. You have to root for Minnesota teams!I think I can only cheer for the Rockers!Would you like to go to a game sometime?Yes, very much, but you said it was very expensive. It is, but I’ll ask my friend to see if his dad can get us some tickets. Sorry, it won’t be for your beloved Rockets; those tickets are hard to get. But maybe we can get into another game. That would be wonderful. Could I bring a camera along?A regular camera is OK. But I don’t think they allow video cameras. I was with a friend once and the security guards threatened to take his video camera away from him. That won’t be a problem; I don’t even have a video camera away from him. That won’t be a problem; I don’t even have a video camera. Just tell me when we can go!Oh, look, the game’s over. Wolves win!Oh…!I can see why you like fishing so much, but I can’t see why all the guys are crazy about football.Well, we grew up with it. We played it for fun as little kids---dreaming we were going to be great football stars. If we were the stars we knew everyone would love us and We’d make millions of dollars for only three months of work. It was every boy’s dream. It doesn’t sound very realistic.Of course not. We soon learned that when we played football in high school. When we saw that the other guys were bigger and stronger and faster, we knew that we weren’t going to be one of the great ones. But dreaming is part of being an American. If you don’t dream you never do what you really want to do.That’s absolutely right. But what about being practical? That comes in time of course. However, all new and great inventions, business and ideas, came first from creative dreaming. Sure, a little kid’s dream of becoming a football star may not be realistic, but it establishes a way of thinking and dreaming that carries over later into real life.Guess this is what” the American dream” is all about, right?Yes. In other words, kids often have unrealistic dreams, but it’s not all bad. The habit of dreaming big dreams carries over into adulthood, which acquires a practical touch to it as the years go by. It is then through those dreams that people aspire to do great things and work to accomplish their dreams. The end result is that people achieve success in life beyond what they might have expected. Now I am beginning to see that American is different. People dream, and are creative. And they follow their dreams and make them come true. That’s wonderful!Yes. The love of sports reflects people’s love of dreaming. Sports are very important to us, especially to boys. You mean sports do not play a role in girl’s life?I didn’t really mean that. But I think a boy’s confidence usually grows from how well he’s done in sports. And building up a strong self-confidence is the core if being a man.Well ,I have to admit that you Americans are very lucky people. Why?Cause you have the easy access to every kind of sports you like. In china, many schools have basketball playground, or facilities for sports like table tennis, but not for football.Football is not popular in China?I do not think so. The point is that we do have enough spacious green land. Even though many Chinese kids do like playing football or some other sports that require large open space, they are not lucky enough to find a place. That’s true. In American, almost every school has a gym and playgrounds. Besides, kids can even play different sports in public parks or community parks.I see there are many free open tennis playgrounds here. It could be for table tennis in China, but not for the tennis. You know playing tennis. You know playing tennis can be costly for students in China.Well, sounds like table tennis in your sport. Now I have a brilliant idea. I know a place that has the table.Great! Let’s go.I don’t understand why this Super Bowl is so exciting. It’s just a game.Oh, no, it’s more than a game. It’s a time to get together with friend and forget about terrorism, world hunger, war, and all the other world problems. It’s a big fun time for us. While watching the game, we become kids again.I have come to think that you Americans are basically kids at heart, even when you grow up. You have an adult’s body, but a kid’s heart and mind.Is that bad? No. It’s good. Kids play, kids dream, kids hope. Why should we always be sour-faced adults?I agree. So then, do you often watch the game at home?Yes, but usually not by myself. I often go to a Super Bowl party.A Super Bowl party? What’s that?Well, a Super Bowl party is when a bunch of friends get together at someone’s house to watch the Super Bowl together. Watch the game on TV together?Yeah. We like to gather together when this big event comes. There is plenty of pop, chips, dip, and hamburgers to go around. And all the girls go into another room and talk girl talk, and the guys watch the game, eat, and yell at the TV-telling the referees they made a mistake or the players what to do. It’s all in fun.Like little kid’s fun.Yeah, that’s right. And I know you are teasing me a little bit. But you know,I see so many Chinese students come here and totally miss the American Experience. They just study and study. That’s why we come here. But their whole life is spent in a one-room apartment or the lab. What else can we do? We have no alternatives. Being a student means that studying comes first. But they never see the real America, or meet real American people. They live in this country but never experience it. I feel really sorry for them. They miss out on the real educational experience of being in America.Maybe you are right. We’ll have to realize this. Can I come to your Super Bowl party?Of course. I’m more than happy to have you at the party. Then, I can introduce you to my friends. Will I see anyone I met at the potluck meal? No, this is a different group. Most of them are my friends from childhood. We’ve played football all the way form grade school through high school.Do you still play football together now?Yes, whenever we can, maybe this time it will be after the Super Bowl party.Wonderful. Then I’ll certainly go to the party.Great.Xin, you’re done a good job of learning about American culture and meeting Americans.Make a contribution to your world! Most of the people I know look at a person like Mother Teresa and assume that she was born to make a great contribution to the world. They think that she was an incredibly spiritual woman and that she had always been set apart by her commitmentto the poor. That’s not true. She made a conscious decision to make a contribution to the poor of the world-later in life! For over twenty years she taught the wealthiest children in Calcutta, India. Every day she overlooked the poor on her way to the wealthy neighborhood in which she worked, never giving the poor a second thought. One night, as she was walking down the street, she heard a dying woman cry out for help. As this dying woman fell into her arms Mother Teresa’s life changed forever. Realizing the seriousness of the woman’s condition, Mother rushed her to the hospital, where she was told to sit and wait. She knew that the woman would die without immediate medical attention, so She took her to another hospital. Again, she was told to wait; the woman’s social caste made her less important than others being treated. Finally,in desperation, Mother Teresa took the woman home. later that night the woman she found on the street died in the comfort of Mother Teresa’s loving arms.Mother Teresa’s “defining moment” had come, the moment when she decided that this would never happen again to anyone within her reach. From that moment on she decided that she would devote her life to easing the pain of those who were suffering around her. Most of you who are studying this textbook are fairly young. Why wait for over twenty years to decide to make a difference in your world? Why not start TODAY? Your big dreams and goals should not be centered in you, but in others, in how you can make a contribution to the world you live in. If that goal is real, you will adjust your life, beginningtoday ,to serve and help others in any way you can . Not out of bao en, but out of love.Wow, everything is so beautiful.Thank you. Christmas in America is very meaningful to all of us and we love having our families together with us at this time.I can see that. Um, if I’m to understand Americans, I must learn more about Christmas. Please let’s sit down and talk more aboutChristmas and there might even be a gift for you under the tree.Thank you.Have some coke.I am beginning to feel a part of your family. You are, Xin.Part of what Christmas is all about is the love that develops between people.I can feel that. You Christians have something I want in life. You love people so much, and seem so happy and peaceful in your heart.Peace is another part that Christmas offers to those who want it.Xin, why don’t you make this your American home?Thank you. My classmates asked me whether felt homesick, especially when the New Year’s coming. I told them no, ‘cause I really have a home feeling here.I have a little gift for you. Would you like to open it now?Oh, it’s pretty, lovely.Thank you. I hope you’ll enjoy it.I like it so much. I have something for you, too.Wow, how nice!So beautiful.Thank you.I’m glad you like it.Bill, I guess the big holiday in America must be Christmas. Can you tell me something about it?Well, there are a couple of different aspects to Christmas. One is purely secular; the other is very religious. Can you tell me about both?Sure. For non-Christians,I think you could say that today, Christmas is first a family holiday, and then a mixed-up happy time of traditional customs from Europe and America. This aspect of Christmas has become very commercialized. So you meanthat for some Americans, Christmas is only a family holiday with no religious overtones?Yes. But for a great many people, Christmas means much more than that. For those people, what does Christmas mean? That’s difficult question because so much background is necessary to understand the true Christian Christmas. But first let me begin by defining the word Christmas for you.Okay.The word Christmas is made up of two words. The first Christ, is a Greek word, meaning “the one sent from God”. The second part ,mas, is from the Latin language. Mas means “sent”. So, the combination means “the sending of the sent One”. We usually just say that Christmas is the time of the sending of Jesus Christ. Why is Jesus Christ so important to Americans?Christians believe that Christ’s coming is very important for all people. They believe what the Bible says, that everyone needs a “Savior” to restore their relationship with God.I can see there are a lot of things I have not learned about Christmas.Yes, and if you really want to understand Americans, religious Christmas is worth further study. Well, Xin, what’s your big holiday in china?New Year.We celebrate New Year too-on January first! Again, it’s related to Christmas and the Gregorian calendar year.We Chinese use the lunar calendar. We celebrate New Year in late January or early February. We call this Spring Festival. How do you celebrate your New Year? It’s basically a time of celebration, parties, and most families have a big New Year’s dinner of ham and mashed potatoes. Then we watch football. We sort of ring out the old year and ring in the New Year. So what do you do for New Years?I think it’s much the same. Only in Chinese Spring Festival it’s a dig holiday, like Christmas in America. On the Chinese New Year’s Eve, all family members will gather together, making dumping and watching New Year’s TV programs. Students get four or five weeks off.We have some time off for the combined Christmas and New Year holidays, and then winter break later in winter. What does winter break celebrate?Nothing. It was started to save energy during the cold months of winter when heating is very costly in places like Minnesota.I know the American Fourth Of July and Easter holidays. Our national Day is on October first. We have other holidays that are not so big, Memorial, Presidents’ DAY, and others. Then there are fun days that are not holidays, like Halloween. So, there are many new things to learn about. Can you tell me about the fun days that are no holidays?Sure, maybe next time we meet. You promised to tell me about the fun days that are not holidays. That’s difficult to explain. You see in America holidays and fun days are all mixed up between secular and religious holidays. What do you mean?Well, take Halloween for example. It started a long time ago in Europe as all witch’ special day,”all-hallows’ eve”. But nobody takes that seriously any more. It has become a fun day for kid. They dress up as ghost, goblins, witched, pirates, and monsters—stuff like that .On Halloween they go from door to door and say, “Trick and treat.”What is “trick and treat?”It means, “We will trick you if you don’t give us a treat.”Y ou see, the kids expect that the people in the house will give them candy. The kids go around and collect a whole bag of candy this way. It’s all for fun—a dress-up day when kids can get free candy. Can we do that ?Ha! No, it’s for little kids up to about 12 or 13. Big kids ,like you and me, go to the Halloween parties.I also saw some kids carving holes on pumpkins.Yeah. They carve a pumpkin to look like a head. It’s called a jack-o’-lantern.What’s that for? They typically set the pumpkin in front of their house or in a window and put a candle in it.I know you have another fun day, perhaps for adults, April fool’s Day.Is it only popular in America?NO. I think it’s also very popular in Europe. In France the victim of a practical joke is called an April fish; in Scotland a gowk or cuckoo. Do you have some similar fun days in China?Yes, but not exactly like yours. I know some minority groups have really interesting festivals. Most of our traditional Chinesefestivals are on the lunar calendar. For example, a few days after the Spring Festival, we have the lantern Festival. Is the dragon and lion dance related to this one?Yes. That’s a very popular activity in southern China. It seems you have another festival that has something to do with the Dragon Boat racing? You are right. It’s on the fifth day of the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It’s a day to commemorate the heroic suicide of Qu Yuan, an ancient Chinese poet.We have some holidays to commemorate some historical events or influential people, like Columbus Day and Martin Luther King Day. These are our legal holidays. In china, we even celebrate some historic of your country, for example, the International Women’s Day.What’s that? I’ve never heard of that.Really? But it started in America! In china we celebrate that on March 8th. It has something to do with women protesting harsh working conditions back in the 1850’s.I don’t think American women even know this day.Another big Chinese holiday now is our Labor Day.Yeah, we have this day too; it’s the first Monday of September. What? Ours is on May 1st. That too started in America, in Chicago about 100 years ago. We usually get the whole week off form school.Well this is really odd. I meet someone from China who teaches me about my own country’s history! The ultimate question“Why am I here?” From this question come a number of other questions of almost equal importance. I hope you are asking them.Of course the ultimate question can be answered in a shallow but positive way. “I am here to do good, to benefit China, to help my society become better.” But what ultimate is “good”? What is the best way to benefit China? And how best can I help those around me in society? Everyone can think of a social plan or project that is beneficial. But behind every society lies p problem that can’t be changed with a social plan or project and that is the heart of man. Why is man’s heart so set on evil, war, hate, jealousy, envy, pride, unfaithfulness and selfishness? What is wrong with man at the core of his being? Once you get the answer to these questions you will know why you are here.I am not going to give you the answer today. You will have to discover it yourself through a search of the world’s great literature on the subject. It is a search that should occupy much of your thought, for how you answer it will change the purpose for which you live. I found my answer later in life, so now I look back on my life and find much of my earlier efforts, goals, and dreams were not as beneficial as they could have been. I had humanistic and worldly goals for my life. These were not bad purposes, but they were not great purposes. Hopefully, you will find the right answer early in life, so that your life can have a great purpose and do great things.Do we have to get up so early?Well, the fish usually bite better early in the morning. When the sun comes up and it gets hot, they go and hide somewhere. Then why did I have to buy a fishing license? The government uses the money to help improve the lakes and rivers. If you don’t buy a license and they catch you, you have to pay a big fine.Who will check? The police? No, the conservation officers. But they carry guns just like regular cops. If one comes around and asks, you must show them your license.Really? Well, I have my license ready! Now, show me how to fish.First you put a hook on your fishing pole like this. Next take a weight, a sinker and put them on the line. Then put this little plastic ball on, it’s called a bobber. With this you can tell if you have a bite. Lastly, put the worm on the hook.Could you do that for me? The worm is disgusting. No problem. Now press the button here and cast the line out like this, see your bobber? Just wait till it goes down, then reel it in. Then turn the crank like this.Bill, I don’t see my bobber. Where did it go?Maybe you have a fish. Can you feel it? Start reeling it in.I feel something tugging. Is it a fish?It could be. Look, you really caught a fish, a big one! Keep reeling it in, I’ll grab when the fish comes close. I’ve got it.Wow, it’s a big one! I can’t believe it. Can we keep it?We could if we wanted. But it’s only a grab, a rough fish. That’s the most common fish we eat in China. It’s very tasty.。
