As requested, I'm excited to tell you all about my hometown of Ganzhou in this letter. Ganzhou is a city in the northeast of Jiangxi Province in southern China. While not as well-known internationally as places like Beijing or Shanghai, Ganzhou is a place steeped in natural beauty, rich history and culture that I'm proud to call home.Let me start by telling you about the breathtaking scenery we have here. Ganzhou is nestled in the northeastern mountains and hills of Jiangxi, an area known for its striking landscapes and vistas. My favorite scenic spot has to be Mount Longhu, with its ancient gnarled trees, jagged peaks piercing the clouds, and countless winding trails to hike and explore. On clear days, the views from the summit stretch out for miles in every direction across a sea of lush green hills.Another renowned natural area is the Longhu Grotto, an extensive cave system with stunning rock formations, underground rivers and lakes lit by colorful lights. I remember my first trip there as a young child, being in awe of the extraordinary stalactites and stalagmites carved out over millions of years. It's a geological wonderland and a cool respite from Ganzhou's humid summers.Speaking of our climate, we experience a subtropical monsoon climate here with very hot, humid summers and pleasantly mild winters. One of my favorite hometown traditions is the Ganzhou Guzhuang Festival held each summer to celebrate the city's customs and culture. The ancient streets come alive with the sights, smells and sounds of dragon dances, traditional operas, lanterns and of course delicious local snacks. I always look forward to the festivities and riding the colorful fair rides with my friends. Our city has such a rich history dating back over 2,500 years to the Spring and Autumn Period. In fact, Ganzhou is renowned as one of the four famed cities of that era along with Zhengzhou, Xian and Luoyang. You can still see remnants of our ancient past in sites like the Former Residence of the Chen Family, a sprawling complex of pavilions, gardens and architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties that is now a museum. The East Gate Tower is another famous landmark, the last remaining section of Ganzhou's original city walls first constructed in 589 AD during the Sui Dynasty. With such deep roots, it's no surprise that Ganzhou has been a cradle of culture and the arts over the centuries. We are celebrated for Gan Opera, a unique variety of traditional Chineseopera with a 400-year history that is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The singing, choreography, makeup and elaborate costumes are just mesmerizing to witness in performance. We also have our own form of paper-cutting art called Ganzhou Fendai that features intricate red-colored designs. I've tried my hand at it and let me tell you, it takes incredible patience and skill! No discussion of Ganzhou's culture would be complete without mentioning our local cuisine. We are especially known for using fresh, seasonal ingredients and simple but delicious flavors. Some of my personal favorite dishes include lazhouzhoumian noodles in savory broth, refreshing icengua shaved noodles for summer, and the uber-popular spiral crispy sesame pancakes called ganbajiao that you can find street vendors selling on every corner. I've yet to find a place that makes them as delicious as the vendors do here. Food is such an integral part of our culture and social life in Ganzhou.I could go on and on describing the charms of my hometown, but I'll stop here for now. Just know that Ganzhou is a special place with scenic natural wonders, a storied history, vibrant cultural traditions, and welcoming people. While it may not be a major modern metropolis, our city has a uniquecharacter and simple way of life that I've grown to cherish and appreciate. I'd love for you to have the chance to experience it for yourself one day. Thanks for letting me share a bit about my hometown with you. I look forward to hearing more about yours in your next letter.
