Unit 6 Work Quietly! A Let’s Learn
Introduction
This lesson is designed for 5th grade students in the People’s
Education Press (PEP) English curriculum. The focus of this lesson is on
developing students’ ability to use polite requests and giving
instructions in the context of classroom behavior.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: - Understand
and use polite requests and imperative sentences in English - Identify
and understand classroom behavior expectations - Demonstrate the ability
to follow classroom behavior expectations
Materials & Preparation
• Classroom behavior posters
• Whiteboard and markers
• Interactive whiteboard, if available
• Flashcards with pictures of appropriate classroom behaviors
• Handouts with polite requests and imperative sentences
• Audio recording of polite requests and imperative sentences
• Pen and paper for note-taking
• Graphic organizer for organizing information
Procedure
Warm-Up: Classroom Behavior Expectations
• Start by displaying classroom behavior posters and reviewing each
one with the class.
• Ask students to share in Chinese what each poster means and why it
is important for good classroom behavior.
• Display flashcards with pictures of appropriate classroom
behaviors and ask students to identify and match them with the posters. Presentation: Polite Requests and Imperative Sentences
• Introduce the concept of polite requests and imperative sentences
by explaining that they are used to make polite requests and give
instructions respectively.
• Display handouts and review examples of polite requests and
imperative sentences.
• Play an audio recording of polite requests and imperative
sentences and ask students to listen and repeat.
Example Polite Requests: - Can you please close the window? - Would
you mind turning off your phone? - Could you pass me the marker, please?
Example Imperative Sentences: - Please take out your textbooks. -
Put your chairs under your desks. - Listen carefully to the instructions.
Practice: Role-Play
• Divide the class into small groups.
• Assign each group a specific situation, such as asking someone to
pass a book or reminding someone to raise their hand before speaking.
• Ask students to practice using polite requests and imperative
sentences in their role-playing scenarios.
Review: Graphic Organizer
• Pass out graphic organizers and ask students to write down
examples of polite requests and imperative sentences from the role-playing exercises.
• Ask students to work together to explain why these requests and
instructions are important for maintaining good classroom behavior.
Conclusion
In this lesson, students learned about polite requests and
imperative sentences in the context of classroom behavior. Through a
