My English Writing Journey

Hi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm in 5th grade. I love

learning English and want to share my experiences with writing

in English. This year, my class has been working really hard to

prepare for the big Jiangsu vocational college entrance exam

that we have to take after middle school. Part of the exam tests

our English writing skills. At first, I was really nervous about

having to write a whole essay in English! But my amazing teacher

Ms. Wang helped us a lot by giving us templates to follow.

A template is kind of like a recipe, but for writing instead of

cooking. It shows you the basic ingredients and steps you need

to include to make a good essay. Templates make the writing

process much easier, especially for us kids who are still learning.

The templates allow us to organize our thoughts and construct

our essays in a clear, logical way.

For example, one of the first templates Ms. Wang taught us

was for opinion essays. The main components are:

An introductory paragraph that states your opinion on the

topic Two or three body paragraphs that provide reasons and

examples supporting your opinion

A conclusion paragraph that restates your opinion and

wraps things up

Using this template, I was able to write a pretty good

opinion essay about whether kids should have to wear school

uniforms. I said I don't think we should have to wear uniforms

because they can be uncomfortable, expensive for families, and

stifle self-expression. I had clear topic sentences stating each of

my reasons, and details and examples in the body paragraphs to

back them up.

Another type of essay template we learned is for

advantage/disadvantage style questions. The basic format is:

An intro paragraph presenting the topic

A body paragraph discussing the advantages

A body paragraph discussing the disadvantages

A conclusion that weighs both sides and states your overall

position

I followed this template for an essay about the advantages

and disadvantages of social media for kids. I talked about how social media can help us stay connected with friends and learn

new things online, but I also discussed dangers like cyberbullying

and internet addiction. In the end, I concluded that social media

is okay for kids if they use it responsibly and have parental

supervision.

Cause and effect essays are another common type that the

vocational exam tests. Ms. Wang gave us this template:

An intro paragraph explaining the topic and stating what the

main cause(s) or effect(s) will be

Body paragraphs describing the specific causes/effects using

explanations and real-life examples

A conclusion tying everything together

I used this for an essay about the causes of stress in kids

today. First I introduced the effects that stress can have on kids'

health, behavior, and performance in school. Then I had body

paragraphs detailing major causes like too much homework,

overscheduling of activities, family problems, and pressure to get

good grades. Using this logical template helped me organize all

my ideas coherently.

Our teacher also showed us templates for other genres like

narratives, compare/contrast essays, and process analysis. No matter what type of essay it is, having a clear template to provide

the basic structure makes the writing process so much easier. We

just have to fill in the blanks with our own ideas, examples, and

supporting details.

In addition to the templates, Ms. Wang also provided us with

sample essays to read and analyze as models of good writing.

Seeing full examples of how other students addressed the same

prompts and constructed their essays was super helpful. We

could identify strengths like using descriptive language,

incorporating evidence and facts, smooth transitions between

ideas, and clear thesis statements. The samples also highlighted

things to avoid like going off-topic, repetition, incomplete

thoughts, and simple grammar/spelling mistakes.

While we had to work hard analyzing and even memorizing

the formats and samples at first, it has paid off so much in the

end. Following the templates gives our essays a professional,

organized structure. Modeling our writing after the strong

sample essays elevates our vocabulary, sentence fluency, and

overall quality. With enough practice, the templates and models

become second nature.

Thanks to all the preparation from Ms. Wang, I actually feel

pretty confident about the writing portion of the big exam now.
